Most Core Keeper multiplayer failures are resolved by checking compatibility before touching network settings. Confirm that both players are on supported platform families, then repeat the in-game Game ID process with the host still inside the world. PC players using different storefronts must enable cross-play in Gameplay settings. Only after those checks should you investigate Steam connectivity, managed networks, updates, or a possible game bug.
1. Confirm that your platforms can play together
Do this first. A router restart, port change, or new invite cannot make an unsupported platform pairing work. Fireshine Games’ Core Keeper support guidance separates PC cross-play from console-family play and says there are currently no plans for PC-to-console cross-play.

| Players’ platforms | Support status | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PC to PC, same or different storefronts | Supported | Enable the game’s cross-play option when the storefronts differ; PC cross-play uses PlayFab. |
| Xbox One to Xbox Series | Supported within the Xbox family | Make sure both accounts can launch the same current game version. |
| PlayStation consoles within the PlayStation family | Supported within a console device family according to Fireshine’s platform guidance | Check that both players are using compatible editions and current updates. |
| PC to Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch | Not supported | Do not keep retrying the invite; use players from the same supported platform category. |
| Different console families | Not supported by the stated device-family rule | Move both players to one supported console family or to PC. |
Do not confuse a Microsoft Store PC copy with an Xbox console copy. The publisher treats PC platforms and consoles as separate categories. Two people can both use Microsoft-branded hardware and still be on different, incompatible platform types if one is on Windows and the other is on an Xbox console.
What Fireshine officially says about PC cross-play
The official Core Keeper support FAQ states: “Core Keeper ONLY supports cross-play between PC platforms via the networking solution PlayFab.” That statement describes PC-to-PC storefront compatibility; it is not permission for a PC player to join a console session.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
2. Recreate the Game ID invite exactly
Core Keeper’s normal hosted multiplayer flow uses an in-game Game ID. The host must load the world before the other player attempts to join. An invitation sent through a platform friends list is not a substitute for entering the Game ID in the game.
- Have the host start Core Keeper and load the intended world. Wait until the character is actually inside the world, not merely at the title screen or world-selection menu.
- Open the pause menu. Use the platform’s pause button after the world has loaded.
- Select Copy game ID. This copies the code generated for that hosted session.
- Send the copied code to the joining player. Paste it into a private message or another channel so every character is preserved. Avoid retyping a long code manually.
- On the joining device, choose Join Game. Enter the Game ID in the field provided and submit it.
- Keep the host in the world while the joiner connects. If the host leaves, closes the world, or returns to a menu, load the world again and repeat the join attempt with the active session.
The historic official FAQ also required the host to be in the world for a normal hosted session. Therefore, a code copied before the world was loaded, or a retry made after the host left, does not test the same conditions as a valid invite.

- Ask the host to copy the Game ID again from the pause menu after entering the world.
- Have the joiner open Join Game manually rather than relying on an old platform notification.
- Check for an omitted character, leading or trailing space, or a message that wrapped the code across lines.
- Confirm that the host is still present in the world when the join attempt begins.
- If the players are on different PC storefronts, complete the cross-play setting check in the next section before trying another code.
These steps test the supported invitation path. They do not prove that a general network outage is present or absent; they simply remove the most common host-state and code-entry mistakes.
3. Enable PC cross-play when storefronts differ
Two PC players may own the game through different storefronts, such as Steam and GOG. Fireshine’s support page specifically calls out the cross-play gameplay setting for this situation.
- Open Core Keeper’s settings from the main menu or pause menu.
- Enter Gameplay settings.
- Find the Cross-play option and enable it on the relevant PC installations.
- Return to the world, have the host copy a fresh Game ID, and have the other player use Join Game.
PlayFab is the networking solution identified by Fireshine for PC cross-play. Enabling this setting will not overcome a PC-to-console pairing restriction, and it does not replace the Game ID workflow.
Do not use a console setting as a PC fix
Platform labels can be confusing when a PC copy is obtained through a Microsoft storefront. Treat the device on which the game is running as the deciding factor: a Windows PC belongs in the PC category, while an Xbox console belongs in the Xbox category. The two categories are not cross-play compatible under Fireshine’s stated policy.

4. Align game versions and isolate mod problems
Before diagnosing your internet connection, make sure everyone is running the same current Core Keeper update. A normal hosted game and a dedicated server must not be left on different versions. Update the game on every participating device, then restart the game before generating another Game ID.
Fireshine’s post-1.0 patch notes document historical fixes for lobby discovery, join messages, connection loss, and related networking behavior. Those notes show that the game has had version-specific multiplayer defects; they do not establish that a particular old defect is still active in the current build or that every timeout has the same cause.
When mods are installed
Temporarily remove the mod variable from the test. Have all players use an unmodded installation, or verify that the same mod versions and dependencies are installed on every client and on any dedicated server. Mod compatibility changes independently of the base game, so consult the current documentation for each mod. No general official mod-related connection fix is established here.
What an update check can and cannot tell you
- If one player is on an older build, updating may restore lobby discovery or joining.
- If everyone is current and the same Game ID still fails, an update check alone does not identify the cause.
- A historical patch note is not evidence of a current outage. Check current service information and reproduce the problem before reporting a suspected bug.
5. Test the general network path for Steam players
Steam Support’s network guidance is useful for separating a Steam or local-network problem from a Core Keeper-specific problem. It is general Steam diagnostics, not a guaranteed Core Keeper repair.
Check Steam service status
Look at Steam’s service-status information before changing settings. If Steam services are having a broad incident, a friend invite may fail even when your Game ID and platform pairing are correct. Wait for service recovery and then repeat the Game ID test.
Compare Wi-Fi with a direct wired connection
Steam Support recommends trying a direct wired connection when possible. Connect the affected computer to the router with Ethernet, restart Steam, and repeat the same hosted-world test. This is a diagnostic comparison: if wired succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, the result points to wireless reliability or local interference, but it does not prove that buying a cable is a permanent Core Keeper fix.

Account for school, business, and proxy networks
Steam’s required-ports guidance warns that university, business, and proxy networks can block traffic Steam needs. On a managed network, contact the administrator rather than changing equipment or bypassing policy yourself. A workplace or campus connection may prevent multiplayer even when a home connection works.
Steam publishes port requirements for its services, but those ranges are Steam-wide requirements. Do not present them as Core Keeper-specific port-forwarding instructions, and do not forward ports blindly as the first response to an invite failure.
Use a controlled comparison
Change one variable at a time. For example, keep the same host, world, Game ID procedure, and players while switching only from Wi-Fi to wired. Then, if possible, test the affected player on a different permitted network. Recording which change alters the result is more useful than changing the router, firewall, and game settings simultaneously.
6. Interpret the error wording without guessing the cause
Players commonly describe this symptom with phrases such as “Connection timed out” and “Unable to join friend’s game.” Those are examples of wording used in a Steam Community discussion, not an official Core Keeper error taxonomy. The text alone cannot tell you whether the cause is an unsupported platform pair, an inactive host world, a disabled PC cross-play setting, Steam service trouble, or a managed network block.
Use the wording to document what happened, then record the conditions around it: who hosted, both platforms and storefronts, whether the host remained in the world, whether the Game ID was copied anew, and whether the same player can join another friend’s world.
7. Decide whether a dedicated server is appropriate
A dedicated server is an optional hosting arrangement for groups that want a persistent world available independently of one player keeping the game client open. Fireshine’s post-1.0 notes include dedicated-server support and README changes, so consult the current server documentation for installation and version requirements.

It is not the first fix for an ordinary failed invite. A dedicated server introduces its own responsibilities: installing the server build, keeping it updated with the clients, configuring access, and collecting server logs when a connection fails. If a normal Game ID session fails because the players are on incompatible platforms or the PC cross-play setting is disabled, moving to a server does not remove that platform restriction.
When a server becomes reasonable
- Your platform pairing is supported and the Game ID workflow works, but the group needs the world available when the usual host is offline.
- You can maintain the server on a compatible, updated build.
- You are prepared to troubleshoot server-specific configuration separately from client invites.
8. Escalate with a useful bug report
If the pairing is supported, the host is in the world, the Game ID was copied and entered correctly, PC cross-play is enabled where needed, and basic Steam checks do not change the result, report the problem through Fireshine Games’ official Core Keeper bug-report route or its support page. Steam’s technical-support listing for Core Keeper also points players to Fireshine Games.
Include these details
- Each player’s device category: PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch.
- For PC, the storefront used by each player.
- The game version shown on every client and, if applicable, the dedicated-server version.
- Whether you were the host or the joining player.
- The exact error text, including whether it said “Connection timed out” or “Unable to join friend’s game.”
- Whether the host remained inside the world during the attempt.
- Whether a newly copied Game ID was used and whether PC cross-play was enabled.
- Whether the failure affects one friend, every friend, one world, or every world.
- Whether Steam service status was normal and whether a wired-connection comparison changed the result.
- Any mods, server software, managed-network restrictions, or proxy use involved.
That information lets support distinguish an unsupported pairing from a session-state problem, a version mismatch, a Steam-network restriction, or a reproducible game defect. Avoid reporting only that an invite failed; the surrounding conditions are what make the report actionable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. A practical order for the next attempt
- Write down both players’ devices and PC storefronts.
- Reject the pairing immediately if it is PC-to-console or crosses unsupported console families.
- Update every client and any dedicated server; remove mod differences from the test.
- On different PC storefronts, enable Cross-play under Gameplay.
- Have the host load the world, open the pause menu, choose Copy game ID, and send the new code.
- Have the other player choose Join Game and enter the code while the host remains in the world.
- If the attempt still fails on Steam, check service status and compare Wi-Fi with a direct wired connection.
- If the network is managed or proxied, ask its administrator whether Steam traffic is restricted.
- Collect the version, platform, error, host-state, and test details and send them to Fireshine support if the supported setup still cannot connect.
10. Compare the available multiplayer arrangements
| Arrangement | Best use | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Normal player-hosted world | Quick sessions with a friend using the in-game Game ID | The host must load the world and remain there while the joiner connects. |
| PC cross-storefront session | Players on different PC storefronts | Enable Cross-play in Gameplay settings before creating a fresh Game ID. |
| Dedicated server | A persistent world that should remain available independently of the host’s client | Requires separate installation, updates, access configuration, and server troubleshooting; it does not bypass platform restrictions. |
This comparison prevents a common misdiagnosis: changing the hosting method cannot turn PC-to-console play into a supported pairing. Conversely, a dedicated server may be worthwhile later for convenience, but it adds maintenance and is not a shortcut around a failed invite.
11. Avoid fixes that do not answer the actual symptom
Do not buy software advertised as a universal PC cleaner, driver optimizer, or connection booster for this problem. No official Core Keeper guidance establishes those products as a remedy. Likewise, an Ethernet cable is useful only as the temporary wired-versus-Wi-Fi test described by Steam Support; purchasing one is optional and is not proof that the game requires new hardware.
Do not copy Steam’s published port ranges into a Core Keeper guide as if they were game-specific forwarding instructions. Those requirements apply to Steam services generally, and managed networks may require an administrator’s help. Blindly changing router settings can add new variables while leaving a platform mismatch or inactive host world untouched.

12. What success should look like
A clean test has a supported platform pairing, matching current versions, no unverified mod differences, PC cross-play enabled when storefronts differ, a host who is visibly inside the world, a newly copied Game ID, and a joiner who enters it through Join Game. If that exact test works on one network but not another, document the network difference. If it fails consistently across supported setups, preserve the details for Fireshine support instead of repeatedly generating codes without changing or recording the conditions.

Why can’t I join my friend in Core Keeper?
First check that you are using supported platform categories. PC-to-console play is not supported, and different console families are not covered by the stated device-family support. If the pairing is supported, have the host load the world, copy a fresh Game ID from the pause menu, and remain in the world while you choose Join Game and enter it.
Why is my Core Keeper invite code not working?
The code must be copied after the host has entered the world and must be entered through Join Game while the host remains there. Copy it again, avoid retyping or added spaces, and retry with the host actively in the world.
Do Steam and GOG players need cross-play enabled?
Yes. PC players using different storefronts should enable Cross-play in Gameplay settings, then repeat the fresh Game ID process. This setting applies to PC storefront combinations, not PC-to-console play.
Does “Connection timed out” prove my internet is broken?
No. That wording is a player-reported description, not an official cause code. It can accompany an unsupported pairing, inactive host session, disabled PC cross-play, Steam service trouble, or restrictions on a school, business, or proxy network.
Should I forward ports or buy an Ethernet cable?
Not as a first fix. Steam Support recommends a wired connection as a diagnostic comparison, so Ethernet can show whether Wi-Fi is involved. Steam’s port information is general service guidance, not Core Keeper-specific forwarding instructions; managed networks should be handled by their administrator.
Is a dedicated server the answer to failed invites?
Usually not. It is an optional persistent-world arrangement with its own installation, version, access, and logging responsibilities. Resolve platform compatibility, Game ID, cross-play, update, and network checks first; a server cannot bypass an unsupported platform pairing.
The Bottom Line
Start with the platform matrix, not the router. If the pairing is supported, update everyone, enable PC cross-play for different storefronts, and use a newly copied Game ID while the host is inside the world. Then test Steam status and Wi-Fi versus wired connectivity, account for managed networks, and report the exact conditions to Fireshine if the supported setup still fails.
