The correct fix depends on which Copilot you mean. A missing button in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote follows a Microsoft 365 licensing and settings path; a Windows Copilot app that is not installed follows a Microsoft Store path; a nonresponsive or license-validation error requires connection, account, file-location, or browser checks; and missing personal chats usually indicate an account or migration problem. Identify the affected surface first, then use only the matching steps below.
Start by identifying the Copilot problem
Microsoft uses the Copilot name for several experiences that do not share identical requirements. Before changing settings, match your symptom to the product, account type, and person who controls the fix.

Keep personal and work or school identities separate while troubleshooting. A personal Microsoft 365 subscription does not automatically validate a work or school file, and signing into the wrong account can make an otherwise eligible feature appear unavailable.
Fix a missing Copilot button in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote
1. Look in the new default location
Microsoft’s missing-button guidance, updated in July 2026, places the Copilot Dynamic Action Button at the lower-right corner of the document, workbook, or presentation by default. If you remember the control appearing elsewhere, it may simply have moved. In supported builds, you can move the button next to the ribbon instead.

Open an actual document, workbook, or presentation rather than only the app start screen and inspect the lower-right corner of the editing area. If the button is present there, the feature is installed; the problem was its location rather than entitlement.
2. Confirm the signed-in account and subscription
Microsoft states: “If you don’t see Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, it might not be included with your Microsoft 365 subscription or available based on your organization’s settings.” Check the account shown under the app’s account page and make sure it is the account that owns the appropriate Copilot-enabled Microsoft 365 license.
- In a personal installation, sign out of accounts that are not licensed for the feature, then sign back in with the licensed personal account.
- In a work or school installation, use the organization account that was assigned the license. A personal subscription cannot substitute for an organization entitlement when the file and app are governed by work or school policies.
- If your organization manages Microsoft 365, ask the administrator to verify both the license assignment and whether Copilot is allowed for your user or group.
3. Update the app, refresh the license, and restart
An older Microsoft 365 build can hide a control that the service and your subscription support. Install the latest available update for the affected Office app. In the account or product-information area, use Update License when that command is offered. Close every affected Microsoft 365 app, including any that remain open in the background, and start it again.

If the button appears in one app but not another, update and restart each affected app; do not assume that a single restart changed every installed build.
4. Check the organization update channel
For business devices, Microsoft says the described Copilot features are not available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. The guidance identifies Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel for these features. The channel is normally controlled by the organization, so an administrator or help desk must decide whether changing it is appropriate for your security and change-management policy.
Do not switch channels on a managed computer without approval. A channel change affects more than Copilot and may alter when other Microsoft 365 features and fixes arrive.

5. Enable the required privacy experiences
In the Microsoft 365 app’s account privacy controls, check that Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences are enabled. Copilot relies on these categories of connected functionality. If a control is unavailable or immediately reverts, an organization policy may be enforcing it; only an administrator can change that policy.
After changing privacy settings, close and reopen the app. On the web, refresh the page and confirm that you are still using the intended account.
6. Run the Copilot License Troubleshooter
Windows Get Help includes a Copilot License Troubleshooter for people who believe they have a license but cannot see the Copilot icon in an eligible Microsoft 365 application. Open Get Help, search for the Copilot license troubleshooter, and follow its prompts. It is designed to check entitlement-related conditions rather than repair unrelated Office problems.
If the troubleshooter reports that the account is not entitled, contact the person who manages your Microsoft 365 subscription or organization licensing. Reinstalling Office will not create a missing license.
When Copilot will not connect or stops responding
Run the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter first
Windows Get Help provides a Copilot connectivity troubleshooter. Open Get Help, search for that exact troubleshooter, and let it examine firewall rules and other connection blockers. Apply the recommended change, then reopen Copilot and test the same action that previously failed.

Separate a service connection problem from an account problem
If Copilot becomes available after the connectivity repair, the original blocker was local or network-related. If it still does not respond but other Microsoft 365 services work, return to the account and license checks in the previous section. A connection repair cannot make an unlicensed account eligible.
On a managed device, firewall and filtering rules may be controlled by your organization. Give the Get Help result to the help desk rather than disabling security software on your own.
Use Microsoft’s escalation route when the check does not resolve it
Microsoft’s guidance directs home users to Microsoft support when the documented checks fail. Business users should contact their Microsoft 365 administrator, who can investigate organization policies and contact Microsoft support if necessary. Include the affected app, account type, exact error text, and whether the Get Help troubleshooter found a blocker.

Use the account that owns the entitlement
License validation is tied to the account context, not merely to the device. Sign out of an account that lacks the required license and sign in with the licensed account. In a work or school environment, a work or school file normally needs to be opened under the organization account that has the Copilot entitlement.
A common mismatch is opening a work or school file while Microsoft 365 is signed in only with a personal subscription. That combination can produce a validation error even though both accounts are valid.
Move files from third-party storage
Microsoft documents a validation or similar error when a file is hosted on third-party storage. Its stated workaround is to move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint, then open the new copy from that location while signed in with the account that owns the applicable license.

- Save a copy of the file locally if you need a safety backup.
- Copy or move the working file to the licensed account’s OneDrive or the organization’s SharePoint location.
- Open the OneDrive or SharePoint copy from Microsoft 365.
- Run Copilot again and confirm whether validation succeeds.
This workaround changes the file location; it does not change who owns the license. If the error remains, continue with the account and browser checks.
Allow third-party cookies in Microsoft 365 web apps
Microsoft says browser-based license validation requires support for third-party cookies. They may be blocked by default in private browsing and in some browsers. If Copilot works in the desktop app but fails in Word, Excel, or another Microsoft 365 web app, review the browser’s cookie and privacy controls and allow third-party cookies for the Microsoft 365 session as Microsoft’s browser-specific instructions describe.
Exit private browsing before testing. After changing the cookie policy, close the affected tab, open a new regular window, sign in again, and retry. If your organization enforces browser policies, ask the administrator to make the supported exception rather than weakening privacy controls globally.
Escalate with the right owner
Home users should contact Microsoft support if account, storage, and cookie checks do not clear the error. Business users should provide the error to their Microsoft 365 administrator. The administrator can verify license assignment, file permissions, organization settings, and update-channel eligibility.

Install the app when it is missing
If the standalone Copilot app is not on the PC, Microsoft’s Windows access guidance says to install it from Microsoft Store. Open Microsoft Store, search for Microsoft Copilot, choose the official app shown for your Windows device, and select Install or Get. Once installation completes, open the app and sign in with the personal or work account you intend to use.
If Store installation is restricted on a managed computer, your organization may need to approve or deploy the app. Do not download an unofficial installer offered by a third-party site.
Use supported keyboard launch methods
On a Windows device with a Copilot key, press that key to launch Copilot. Microsoft also supports Windows+C. If the shortcut does not behave as expected, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts to review or configure the shortcut.
Configure a supported pen button
Some supported pen shortcut buttons can be configured to act as the Copilot key. Open the pen or device shortcut settings supplied with your Windows hardware and select the Copilot-key action when it is offered. The option depends on the pen and device; its absence does not mean the Copilot app itself is unavailable.
Distinguish the app from Microsoft 365 Copilot
Installing the Windows app does not add Copilot to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote. Those in-app buttons still depend on Microsoft 365 licensing, organization settings, supported update channels, and privacy controls. Conversely, a missing Microsoft 365 button does not necessarily mean the Windows app is uninstalled.
Recover missing personal Copilot chats or content
Missing personal chats can occur during the transition to an updated personal Copilot app. This path is separate from a work or school license-validation problem.
Use the same sign-in method
Sign in with the same Microsoft, Google, or Apple method you used previously. Choosing a different provider, even with an address that looks similar, can open a different personal account with no prior history.
Refresh the app and follow migration messages
- Quit and reopen the Copilot app. On the web, refresh the page and sign in again.
- Read any in-app message or link about existing chats, migration, or moving to the updated experience, and follow it.
- Open the account switcher and confirm that the intended personal account is selected.
- Leave the app signed in and allow time for migration and synchronization across devices.
Do not repeatedly switch between personal and work or school accounts while migration is running; that can make it harder to tell whether content is missing or simply stored under another identity.
Know when to seek help
Transition-related synchronization may not be immediate. If the same sign-in method is confirmed, the migration prompt has been followed, and content remains absent after allowing time for device sync, use the app’s feedback or Microsoft support route. Personal content and organization content are separate; an administrator cannot restore chats that belong to a different personal account.

Microsoft replaced the older Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant with troubleshooters in Get Help. Use the Copilot-specific tools there instead of searching for the retired utility.
