Most Android Steam Link problems become easier once you separate three different failures: the controller cannot pair, it pairs but Steam does not receive its inputs, or the stream itself is delayed or disconnecting. Start with the host and phone on the same network, verify controller compatibility, then use Steam Link’s performance overlay before changing hardware. This order prevents you from treating network lag as a defective gamepad—or replacing a controller when one setting is disabled.
Check the Android Steam Link requirements first
Steam’s Android Steam Link app requires Android 5.0 or newer and a computer running Steam. For initial setup, Steam says the Android phone or tablet should be connected to the same network as the host PC. Steam also recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. That recommendation is a starting point for wireless quality, not a guarantee that buying a new router will cure every delay or disconnection.

- Host: The computer must be powered on, connected to the network, and running Steam with you signed in.
- Android device: Confirm that the phone or tablet meets the Android version requirement and that Steam Link is installed from the official Android app store.
- Network: Put the Android device and host PC on the same local network while pairing and testing.
- Controller: Check the exact model’s Android support instead of assuming that any Bluetooth gamepad will work.
Steam lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile as examples of supported devices. Steam lists DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher. Other input devices may work without official support, so compatibility depends on the controller model, Android version, phone hardware, and the game’s own input handling.

Identify which failure you actually have
Use the symptom—not the purchase history of your controller or router—to choose the first test. The following distinctions keep unrelated problems from being mixed together.
| What you see | Most useful first test | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The controller is missing from Android Bluetooth setup, or appears but pairing fails | Charge it or replace its batteries if applicable, then try pairing with another Bluetooth device | Whether the controller has a power, pairing-mode, or hardware problem independent of Steam Link |
| The controller shows as paired, but buttons do nothing in the streamed game | Open Steam Link and check Settings > Streaming > Advanced Options for input streaming | Whether Steam Link is allowed to pass controller input to the host |
| Buttons work intermittently while the picture freezes or stutters | Enable Steam Link’s performance overlay and watch the cyan network-time line | Whether variable network time is occurring alongside the apparent input delay |
| The stream repeatedly loses the host or returns to the connection screen | Check competing wireless traffic, reduce stream quality or bandwidth, and restart network equipment when appropriate | Whether the local network is saturating or behaving inconsistently |
A controller can be perfectly paired while the stream is unusable, and a smooth video stream can still carry no button presses if input streaming is disabled. Test those paths separately.
When the controller will not connect over Bluetooth
1. Confirm power before changing settings
Charge the controller fully, or install fresh batteries if it uses replaceable cells. A controller with marginal power can enter pairing mode, appear in Android’s device list, and then fail during the connection handshake. Keep it close to the phone while testing and turn off any other device that may be trying to reconnect to it.
2. Test the controller with another Bluetooth host
Try pairing the same controller with another phone, tablet, or computer. If it cannot pair anywhere, the fault is probably in the controller, its battery, or its pairing procedure rather than Steam Link. If it pairs elsewhere, the Android phone’s saved Bluetooth record or compatibility is more likely to be involved.
3. Remove the stale Android pairing
In Android Bluetooth settings, select the controller’s saved entry and choose the option to forget, unpair, or remove it. Put the controller back into its documented pairing mode, scan again, and select it as a new device. This clears a record that may refer to an earlier phone, a different Bluetooth mode, or an interrupted connection.
4. Recheck compatibility after a successful pairing
A Bluetooth connection does not by itself prove that Steam Link can translate every button. Compare the controller model and Android version with Steam’s supported examples. DualShock 4 support, for example, is listed for Android 9.0 and higher. For an unlisted controller, treat operation as possible but not officially assured; a different Android device or game may behave differently.
Do not jump to a replacement controller until charging, the second-device test, removal of the old pairing, and a fresh pairing attempt have all been completed. Replacement batteries are relevant only when the controller uses them and the power check points to battery trouble.

When the controller pairs but the game receives no input
Enable Steam Link input streaming
Steam’s input troubleshooting instruction is specific: in the Steam Link app, open Settings > Streaming > Advanced Options and ensure that input streaming is set to Enabled. This setting controls whether controller actions from the Android client are sent to the host PC. A Bluetooth icon or “connected” status in Android does not override a disabled Steam Link input stream.
Retest inside the Steam Link session
After changing the setting, reconnect to the host and test in a game that already accepts a gamepad. Check a menu as well as active gameplay so you can distinguish a Steam Link transport problem from a title that is expecting keyboard, mouse, or a different controller layout.
Separate game-specific behavior from transport failure
If the controller works in one streamed title but not another, the Steam Link connection is carrying input and the remaining issue is likely the game’s input mode or control mapping. If no streamed title responds after input streaming is enabled, return to the controller compatibility check and verify that the Android system still reports the device as connected.
Do not interpret delayed or missing video frames as proof that the controller signal is absent. Use the performance overlay in the next section to determine whether the network is delaying the entire session.
Diagnose lag with Steam Link’s performance overlay
Turn on the overlay
Open Steam Link’s advanced streaming-client settings and enable the performance overlay. Start a stream, reproduce the delay, and watch the graph while pressing a button. The purpose is diagnostic: compare the timing of visible stutter with the network indicator instead of guessing from how the controller feels.
Read the cyan network-time line
Steam says that large spikes in the cyan line indicate highly variable network time, which is the main indicator of streaming network issues. When those spikes coincide with stuttering, freezing, or delayed on-screen reactions, the network is the first place to troubleshoot. The overlay does not establish a universal acceptable latency number, and no single graph value can certify that every game will feel responsive.
Use controlled comparisons
- Press buttons while the picture is smooth, then again during a visible freeze.
- Observe whether cyan spikes appear at the same moments as the delayed response.
- Temporarily stop a large download or video stream elsewhere on the wireless network and repeat the test.
- If the graph remains stable while one game ignores inputs, focus on input settings or that game rather than replacing network equipment.
This test distinguishes controller-input failure from transport delay. A delayed response during a network spike means the button may have reached the host promptly but the video confirmation arrived late.

Reduce network lag and Steam Link disconnects
Lower streaming quality
If the overlay points to variable network time, first reduce Steam Link’s streaming quality. Lower visual quality requires less consistent throughput and can stabilize a marginal wireless connection. Make one change at a time, then replay the same scene so you can tell whether the change helped.

Reduce the bandwidth limit
Steam also recommends reducing bandwidth until the stream is stable. A lower limit can prevent the stream from competing aggressively with other traffic or from repeatedly filling a congested wireless link. Reduce it gradually rather than changing several network settings simultaneously.
Stop competing wireless traffic
Check for video streams, cloud synchronization, game downloads, operating-system updates, and large file transfers on the same wireless network. Pause those activities during a test. If the stream becomes reliable only after another device stops using bandwidth, the controller itself was not the cause of the lag.
Update router firmware
Install the current firmware supplied for your router model. Firmware updates can address wireless stability and interoperability problems, although they cannot correct a controller that fails Bluetooth pairing or a phone that does not support a particular gamepad.
Power-cycle the network equipment
For persistent connection failures, power-cycle the relevant network equipment when appropriate: stop the stream, turn off the router and any separate access point or modem, wait for them to shut down, then restore power and wait for the network to return before reconnecting Steam Link. This is a recovery step for a stuck network state, not a substitute for checking bandwidth and interference.

Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for Android Steam Link. Treat that as a conditional upgrade path: consider it when your existing wireless setup is the demonstrated bottleneck, after quality, bandwidth, competing traffic, firmware, and restart checks. No router model is established as universally suitable, and a new router will not fix disabled input streaming or an incompatible controller.
Choose replacement hardware only when a test justifies it
A replacement controller is reasonable when the current unit cannot pair with any Bluetooth host, fails the power checks, or is outside the Android compatibility examples and remains unusable after input streaming is enabled. Before buying, verify the exact model, your Android version, and phone compatibility. Steam’s examples—Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile—are not a promise that every revision or phone combination behaves identically.

A 5 GHz Wi-Fi router is likewise a conditional network purchase. Consider one only after the overlay shows network-time spikes and quality, bandwidth, competing traffic, firmware, and power-cycle checks fail to stabilize the stream. There is no universal router model or price established by Steam’s guidance. Buying hardware first can add cost without addressing a disabled setting, a stale Bluetooth pairing, or a host PC that is offline.
Fix “Steam Link keeps disconnecting” systematically
Re-establish the basic session
Verify that Steam is running and logged in on the host, then reconnect the Android device to the same local network. If the host has gone to sleep or Steam has closed, the client cannot maintain a session regardless of controller status.

Watch for a network pattern
Enable the performance overlay during a disconnection-prone session. If cyan-line spikes and freezes precede the drop, apply the quality, bandwidth, traffic, firmware, and power-cycle steps in that order. If the graph is stable until the controller is switched on or moved out of range, revisit the Bluetooth pairing and compatibility checks rather than treating the event as a router failure.
Change one variable per attempt
Record which setting changed and whether the next test lasted longer. Changing quality, bandwidth, router firmware, and controller pairing at once makes it impossible to identify the cause and can leave you with a worse configuration without a clear recovery path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision tree
- Is the host PC running Steam and is the Android device on the same network? If not, correct that basic setup first.
- Does the controller appear in Bluetooth setup? If it does not, charge it, enter pairing mode, and confirm the model’s Android compatibility.
- Does pairing fail? Try another Bluetooth host, remove the stale Android pairing, and pair again.
- Does pairing succeed but no game respond? Enable input streaming at Settings > Streaming > Advanced Options, then retest in a known gamepad-compatible title.
- Does the whole stream feel delayed or freeze? Enable the performance overlay and check for large cyan network-time spikes.
- Are spikes present? Lower quality, reduce bandwidth, stop competing wireless traffic, update router firmware, and power-cycle network equipment if needed.
- Are spikes absent but one game still ignores input? Investigate that game’s control mode or the controller’s Android compatibility instead of replacing network hardware.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Steam’s support guidance provides a method for isolating pairing, input transport, and network problems. It does not provide a universal Android controller-latency figure, failure rate, or complete compatibility matrix for every controller-and-phone combination. Android and Steam Link labels can change as app versions are updated, so the wording of a setting may differ slightly from the path shown here while the underlying input-streaming option remains the relevant control.
The most reliable fix is therefore diagnostic rather than product-led: establish the network and host prerequisites, clear and retest Bluetooth pairing, enable input streaming, and use the overlay to prove whether network time is fluctuating. Hardware replacement is justified only when those checks identify an incompatible or faulty device, or when network tests show that the existing wireless setup is the limiting factor.

Why does my controller connect to Android but not work in Steam Link?
Android pairing only confirms a Bluetooth connection. In Steam Link, open Settings > Streaming > Advanced Options and make sure input streaming is Enabled. Then reconnect and test a game that accepts a controller. If it works in one game but not another, the remaining issue may be that game’s input mode or mapping.

What should I do when the controller appears but will not pair?
Charge it or replace its batteries if applicable, then try pairing it with another Bluetooth phone, tablet, or computer. If it pairs elsewhere, remove the saved controller entry from Android Bluetooth settings, put the controller back in pairing mode, and add it again. If it fails with every host, suspect the controller, battery, or pairing procedure.
How can I tell whether delayed controls are caused by Wi-Fi?
Enable Steam Link’s performance overlay and reproduce the delay. Steam identifies large spikes in the cyan network-time line as highly variable network time, usually associated with streaming stutter or freezing. If spikes coincide with delayed video, troubleshoot the network before replacing the controller.
Why does Steam Link keep disconnecting even though the controller is paired?
A paired controller does not prove that the stream is healthy. Confirm that Steam is running and logged in, keep the phone and host on the same network, and check the overlay for cyan-line spikes. If spikes appear, lower quality or bandwidth, stop competing wireless traffic, update router firmware, and power-cycle network equipment when appropriate.
Is a 5 GHz router required for Android Steam Link?
Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router, but the recommendation is not a guarantee and is not by itself a requirement stated as a universal fix. Test quality, bandwidth, interference, firmware, and network restarts first. Consider a router upgrade only when those tests show the current wireless setup is the bottleneck.
Which Android controllers are officially supported?
Steam lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile as examples. DualShock 4 support is listed for Android 9.0 and higher. Other devices may work without official support, so check the exact controller model, Android version, phone compatibility, and game behavior before buying or replacing hardware.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose in order: confirm Steam and the same-network setup, repair Bluetooth pairing, enable input streaming, and read the performance overlay. Large cyan network-time spikes point to quality, bandwidth, traffic, firmware, or network-equipment issues; a stable graph with missing controls points back to input settings, compatibility, or the game. Replace hardware only when those tests identify it as the limiting factor.
