How to Fix Controller, Audio, and Performance Issues with Non-Steam Games on Steam Deck

Most problems with a non-Steam game on Steam Deck fall into one of four places: the Deck itself, Steam’s per-game configuration, the separate launcher, or the game’s own settings. Start by installing every available SteamOS update, restarting the Deck, and closing third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. Then isolate the failing layer: test the Deck’s controls, verify the selected audio output, and reduce graphics load before changing compatibility tools. This sequence cannot fix every launcher or game, but it prevents you from treating a hardware, routing, or configuration problem as a game bug.

The sections below cover handheld and docked play, built-in and external controllers, speakers and headsets, Bluetooth and HDMI audio, and the limits of Steam Input and Proton with non-Steam software.

Start with the checks that apply to every non-Steam game

  1. Install updates. In Gaming Mode, open Settings > System, install any available SteamOS updates, and allow the Deck to restart if prompted.
  2. Restart after updating. A full restart reloads Steam Input, audio services, display detection, and the launcher process instead of carrying a broken session forward.
  3. Close Desktop Mode utilities. If you installed overlays, controller mappers, audio tools, launchers, or other third-party applications through Desktop Mode, close or disable them temporarily and test again. Two programs trying to capture the same input or audio device can make an otherwise working game appear broken.
  4. Retest without the dock when possible. A handheld test removes HDMI/DisplayPort audio, external-display resolution, USB peripherals, and some wireless-interference variables.
  5. Record the exact symptom. “The controller does nothing,” “the game has no sound,” and “the game stutters” lead to different checks. Note whether the problem occurs in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, only after a launcher appears, or only when docked.

If the application remains unstable after these checks, use the game or launcher publisher’s support channel. Non-Steam titles can include their own input wrappers, launchers, anti-cheat components, and compatibility requirements that Steam cannot repair globally.

Fix controller and input problems

1. Prove whether the Deck’s physical controls work

Before editing a layout, test the hardware. Open Steam’s controller settings and run Test Controller Inputs. Press every face button, shoulder button, trigger, stick, and directional control, and watch for a response.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • If an input fails in the test, the problem is below the game-layout level. Check for a stuck button, a trigger that never reaches its full range, or a stick that does not report movement. A game profile cannot repair a control that the operating system is not receiving.
  • If every control passes, the hardware is communicating and you can concentrate on the game’s selected layout, launcher behavior, or Steam Input compatibility.

Run this test with external controllers disconnected so that you do not accidentally diagnose the wrong device.

2. Inspect the game’s active layout

From the game’s library details, open its gamepad or controller settings and identify the active layout. Steam lets you edit a layout and browse community layouts. Select a layout that matches what the game actually accepts:

  • Gamepad layout: appropriate when the title exposes native Xbox-style or other standard gamepad controls.
  • Keyboard-and-mouse layout: useful when the title only reacts to keyboard keys or mouse movement. Sticks and trackpads can be assigned to those inputs, but the game will display keyboard prompts rather than gamepad prompts.
  • Mixed layout: useful for launchers or games that require a mouse for menus and a controller during play.

A Steam “Playable” classification does not mean every control is automatic. It can indicate that manual controller configuration, an on-screen keyboard, or touchscreen/mouse input is required.

3. Add and launch the game through Steam

Steam’s Desktop FAQ explains how to add a non-Steam application to the library. Doing so gives Steam a chance to apply a per-game layout and expose the Steam Overlay while that executable is running. The result depends on the game and its launcher: some launchers pass controls to the game, while others intercept or replace them.

After adding it, launch the title from the Steam library rather than opening the executable directly. If a launcher opens first, wait for the actual game window before judging the layout. Some launchers need mouse input and do not accept a gamepad until gameplay begins.

4. Check the Steam Overlay, but do not assume it is available

Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance treats the Overlay as important to configuration. If the Overlay does not appear, Steam may not be able to apply the selected layout to that process. This is especially common with retail copies, separate launchers, and games that start a second executable.

Press the configured Overlay shortcut while the game is focused. If nothing opens, verify that the Overlay is enabled for the title and that the launcher did not start a different process. Even when the Overlay appears, the game may reject a particular input style; switch between gamepad, keyboard/mouse, and mixed layouts and retest. An Overlay failure is a limitation to investigate, not a universal fix.

5. Troubleshoot an external Bluetooth controller

  1. Open the Deck’s Bluetooth settings and confirm that the controller is paired and shown as connected.
  2. Check the controller maker’s firmware-update process; outdated firmware can cause pairing or button-reporting problems.
  3. Power the controller off and on, then reconnect it.
  4. If it still behaves incorrectly, choose the device, forget it, and pair it again.
  5. In a docked setup, move the controller and Deck into clearer line of sight. Reduce nearby 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi congestion and keep the controller’s receiver away from USB 3 devices and cables that can add radio interference.

Test the external pad in Steam’s input-test screen before reopening the game. If it passes there but fails only in the title, return to the layout and launcher checks.

6. Separate controller types when diagnosing

Input path What to verify first Typical limitation
Built-in Deck controls Steam’s Test Controller Inputs, then the per-game layout A title may expect keyboard/mouse input instead of a gamepad
USB controller Cable, device detection, and input test The game or launcher may bind the newly detected device differently
Bluetooth controller Pairing, firmware, reconnect/forget-and-pair, and wireless interference Latency or dropped input can come from the radio environment rather than the game
Keyboard/mouse mapping Assign keys and pointer actions in the Steam layout On-screen prompts and analog behavior may not match a native gamepad

Restore sound from speakers, headphones, Bluetooth, or a dock

1. Verify Steam’s selected output

Open Steam > Settings > Audio and confirm that the intended output is selected. Steam Deck can see built-in speakers, a 3.5 mm headset, USB-C audio, Bluetooth devices, and a television or monitor connected through a dock. A game can be silent simply because Steam is sending sound to a different device.

Play a Steam UI sound or another known-working audio source while changing the output. This tells you whether routing is wrong globally or only inside the non-Steam game.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

2. Recover the built-in speakers

  1. Disconnect Bluetooth audio devices.
  2. Unplug USB-C audio equipment and remove any 3.5 mm headset.
  3. In Steam’s Audio settings, switch to another output and then back to the default built-in speakers.
  4. Confirm that Steam UI sounds are enabled.
  5. Restart the Deck if the speakers remain silent, then test before reconnecting other devices.

Televisions and some monitors count as audio devices even when you are not actively using their speakers. A docked display can therefore become the selected output after connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Fix a Bluetooth headset that connects but sounds delayed or unreliable

  1. Disconnect the headset and connect it again.
  2. If the delay or performance problem remains, forget the device and pair it again.
  3. In Desktop Mode, open the sound settings and try another available A2DP codec, such as SBC or AptXLL, if the device exposes that choice.

Codec switching is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed latency or quality improvement. The best choice depends on the headset, its firmware, and the surrounding wireless traffic.

4. Configure multichannel audio while docked

When the Deck is connected to a television or monitor through HDMI or DisplayPort and you need multichannel output, switch to Desktop Mode while connected and choose the required channel count in the sound settings. Reconnect or reselect the display output afterward if Steam continues using the speakers or a headset.

For a quick isolation test, undock the Deck and play through its built-in speakers. If sound returns immediately, investigate the display, cable, dock output, and channel configuration rather than changing the game’s files.

5. Know the LCD-versus-OLED microphone difference

On the Steam Deck LCD, the built-in microphone is unavailable while a 3.5 mm audio plug is inserted. Steam states that the OLED model can use its built-in microphone simultaneously with 3.5 mm audio. If voice chat works on an OLED but disappears on an LCD when headphones are connected, that behavior is a hardware distinction rather than a non-Steam game audio fault.

Improve poor performance without guessing at a frame rate

1. Establish a clean baseline

Install SteamOS updates, restart, and close third-party Desktop Mode applications before changing graphics settings. Retest the same scene or menu so that you can tell whether a change helped. There is no universal frame-rate target for non-Steam games: launcher, game engine, resolution, anti-cheat, and compatibility path all vary.

2. Reduce the settings that cost the most

Open the game’s graphics or video menu and first lower the overall preset. If you prefer to keep image quality where possible, adjust demanding options individually:

  • Output resolution and render scale
  • Shadow quality and view distance
  • Reflections, ambient occlusion, and volumetric effects
  • Texture quality when video memory is constrained
  • Anti-aliasing and post-processing
  • Frame-rate caps or refresh-rate choices that match the display

Change one group at a time and replay the same section. A lower preset can remove stutter caused by the GPU, while a lower resolution may help when the render load is the bottleneck. Neither change guarantees a particular result for every title.

3. Understand when Proton settings apply

For a title already in the Steam library where Proton is relevant, Steam documents this path: open the title’s Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version available in the list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those directions are for Steam library applications. Do not treat Proton selection as a universal fix for every non-Steam launcher: a launcher may invoke a different executable, require its own runtime, or fail before Proton reaches the game. Change one compatibility variable at a time, launch again, and keep the previous working choice available so you can revert.

4. Diagnose docked performance and image quality separately

A dock adds an external resolution, refresh rate, cable, input connector, and display-processing path. In-game settings may need adjustment for the docked display even when the same title is acceptable in handheld mode.

  • Try the display’s native resolution only if the game can sustain it; otherwise reduce resolution or render scale.
  • Test another HDMI/DisplayPort cable or a different input connector when the image flickers, drops out, or negotiates an unexpected mode.
  • Check the display’s selected refresh rate and the game’s own refresh or frame-cap setting.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices while testing, especially near a Bluetooth controller.

If the game performs normally handheld but poorly only when docked, focus on display settings and dock connections before replacing the compatibility tool.

A symptom-based decision guide

Symptom First test Next branch
No Deck button or stick responds Run Test Controller Inputs Failure there points to hardware or device detection; a pass points to layout or launcher behavior
Controls work in the menu but not in gameplay Open the active per-game layout and check the selected input style Try a native gamepad layout, then a keyboard/mouse or mixed layout if the title requires it
External Bluetooth pad disconnects or lags Reconnect, update firmware, and retest away from 2.4 GHz and USB 3 interference Forget and re-pair; compare with the built-in controls
Game has no sound but Steam menus do Check Steam > Settings > Audio Disconnect other outputs, return to built-in speakers, and restart
No sound only while docked Check the television/monitor output and cable Use Desktop Mode sound settings to select the needed channel count
Bluetooth audio connects with delay Reconnect, then forget and pair again Try another A2DP codec in Desktop Mode sound settings
Handheld performance is acceptable but docked play stutters Compare resolution, refresh rate, and render scale Test another cable/input and reduce the docked graphics load
Performance is poor everywhere Update, restart, close third-party apps, and lower the graphics preset For Steam library titles, test a different Proton version; for other launchers, consult that application’s support

What Steam Deck compatibility labels do—and do not—tell you

A compatibility label is a starting point, not a promise that a non-Steam installation will behave identically. “Playable” can mean that touchscreen or mouse input is needed, that text entry requires the on-screen keyboard, or that a manual layout is expected. A separate launcher can also change which process receives Steam Input and whether the Overlay appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the label to anticipate setup work, then verify the actual executable, layout, output device, and graphics load on your Deck. Keep notes on the configuration that works so a launcher update or a new SteamOS update can be compared against a known baseline.

When to stop changing Steam settings

Escalate to the application’s support team when the Deck passes its input test, Steam routes audio correctly, updates and restarts have been completed, and the same failure occurs with a clean layout and no third-party utilities. Include the game version, launcher version, SteamOS version, whether you were handheld or docked, the controller and audio connection type, and the exact step at which the failure appears.

That information distinguishes a game-specific bug from a Deck configuration issue and avoids repeatedly changing unrelated settings. It also matters for titles with anti-cheat or launchers whose compatibility behavior is outside Steam’s controller and audio configuration.

Preventive setup for future non-Steam games

  • Add the application to Steam and launch it the same way each time.
  • Confirm the per-game layout before the first play session.
  • Keep one known-good layout rather than replacing it while troubleshooting.
  • Pair Bluetooth controllers and headsets before launching the game, not after the launcher has opened.
  • Check Steam’s audio output after docking or undocking.
  • Use a repeatable graphics preset for handheld and a separate one for an external display.
  • After an update, retest controls, audio, and one demanding scene before assuming a new failure is permanent.
