Two different answers do not prove that either answer is correct. Generative chatbots can produce confident, incompatible responses because they generate text from patterns in your prompt, conversation context, model configuration and available sources rather than consulting a guaranteed database. Save both answers, identify exactly what conflicts, then verify the disputed claims against authoritative documents. For important decisions, have a qualified person review the evidence instead of treating the chatbot as the final authority.
Why an AI chatbot can contradict itself
A chatbot predicts a plausible continuation of the conversation. It does not automatically maintain a stable, audited set of facts. OpenAI’s explanation of hallucinations uses self-contradictory answers as an example and warns that a model can be confidently wrong. Anthropic gives similar guidance for Claude. A fluent tone, detailed formatting or a citation-shaped sentence is not evidence that the underlying claim is true.

Different wording changes the task
Small changes can alter what the model thinks you are asking. “What is the deadline?” could mean a filing deadline, a payment deadline or the end of a local business day. Adding a country, date, product version or definition may cause the model to select a different answer. If the first prompt leaves those details unstated, the model may silently guess them.
Conversation history and hidden instructions matter
Earlier messages, uploaded files, custom instructions, safety rules and tool results remain part of the context. A later answer can therefore be responding to assumptions that are not visible in the latest question. A copied passage can also contain instructions aimed at the model. OpenAI describes this prompt-injection risk as a way that untrusted third-party text can mislead a model by inserting instructions into its context.

Models, snapshots and tools change
The model name, snapshot, temperature or sampling settings, retrieval index and enabled tools can all affect the output. A chatbot with web search may use a recent page; a chat without retrieval may rely on older training data. A provider can also update a model between two sessions. If you do not record the configuration, you cannot tell whether the disagreement came from wording, context, retrieval or a model update.
Freeze the evidence before trying to fix it
Do not edit, summarize or regenerate the conflicting responses before preserving them. A useful record lets you reproduce the question and see which assumption changed.
- Copy the complete transcript. Include the user messages, assistant messages, system or custom instructions that you can see, and any tool output.
- Save both disputed answers exactly as shown. Keep formatting, footnotes, links, tables and quoted text.
- Record the date and time. Include your time zone when the timing could affect a deadline, price, regulation or breaking event.
- Record the model or mode. Note the displayed model name, snapshot or reasoning mode. If the interface does not show one, write “not displayed.”
- List enabled tools and files. Record web search, code execution, connectors, uploaded documents and the document versions or dates.
- Save every link and citation. A link can later disappear or change, so preserve the URL and, where permitted, a copy of the cited page.
Do this for each new contradiction. Without the original prompts and context, a later test may answer a different question and create a third result that is impossible to compare fairly.
Classify what is actually conflicting
“Contradiction” can describe several different problems. Labeling the type tells you what evidence to seek.

For example, “the device supports five years of updates” and “the device supports three years” may refer to different regions or to operating-system updates versus security patches. Resolve the scope before deciding that one response is false.
Use a constrained prompt to repair the conversation
Once the record is safe, ask the chatbot to analyze the disagreement rather than simply asking the original question again. Quote the disputed sentences so the model cannot quietly substitute a different claim. Define the date, geography, edition and permitted sources.
A claim-by-claim repair prompt
Review the transcript below for contradictions. Create a table with: claim, answer A, answer B, exact source for each, source date, scope or jurisdiction, confidence, and unresolved questions. Use only the supplied sources or live sources you can link. If a claim cannot be verified, write “unverified” rather than guessing. Distinguish source text from your inference. End with the smallest correction needed and list what a human should check.Paste the relevant transcript after that instruction. If you have a controlled set of documents, attach them and say: “Answer only from these documents. If the documents do not establish a point, mark it unverified.” Ask the model to quote the supporting passage and page or section number for every material claim.
Require uncertainty and update conditions
Add three questions to the prompt: “What assumption makes the two answers differ?”, “What information would change your conclusion?”, and “Which part is still uncertain?” These questions expose hidden assumptions and prevent a polished guess from being presented as a settled fact. The result is still a draft for checking, not proof.

Ground the answer in a controlled source set
For recurring work, provide the model with a small, versioned collection of documents instead of repeatedly rephrasing the same question. Retrieval can find relevant passages, but retrieval quality depends on the collection, indexing and query. A process that cannot show the passage behind a claim is difficult to audit.
- Choose the source set. Use documents that govern the question: a regulator, standards body, court, manufacturer, dataset owner or peer-reviewed paper, as appropriate.
- Record versions and dates. Keep the publication date, effective date, revision number and jurisdiction with each document.
- Ask for passage-level support. Require a citation beside each material claim and a separate label for inference.
- Test retrieval. Try known questions with known answers and check whether the correct passage is returned.
- Run a fact-checking step. Compare the generated answer with the retrieved text and flag unsupported statements before release.
OpenAI describes prompt engineering, a dataset, retrieval tuning and fact-checking as a typical accuracy-optimization pipeline. Retrieval improves traceability; it does not make a wrong or outdated source authoritative.
Verify every important claim outside the chatbot
Open each cited source yourself. OpenAI’s Help Center advises users to approach ChatGPT critically and verify important information from reliable sources, including quotes, data, technical information and references.

- Check that the source exists. Follow the link and confirm that it is an actual document, not a fabricated title or citation.
- Read the relevant passage. Make sure the source says what the chatbot claims, rather than merely containing similar words.
- Check date and status. Determine whether the page is current, superseded, withdrawn or only a proposal.
- Match scope. Confirm the country, legal jurisdiction, product edition, population, measurement units and time period.
- Inspect qualifications. Look for exceptions, confidence intervals, sample limits, definitions and conditions that the summary omitted.
- Compare independent authorities when it matters. Two pages that copy the same press release are not independent confirmation.
Prefer the organization that issued the rule, owns the dataset, publishes the standard, manufactures the specification or conducted the study. A secondary explainer can help you understand the material, but it should not replace the primary record for a consequential claim.

Resolve genuine disagreement between sources
Sometimes the documents themselves disagree. Do not force the chatbot to select a winner without explaining the basis. Compare the sources on the axes below and state the remaining uncertainty.

If no source clearly dominates, report the disagreement and the reason for it. A transparent “the authorities differ as of this date” is more useful than a fabricated consensus.

Use a chatbot as a drafting or organizing aid for medical, legal, financial, safety and employment matters, not as the sole decision-maker. Anthropic states that users should not rely on Claude as a singular source of truth and should scrutinize high-stakes advice. A refusal is not proof that an action is unsafe, and a confident answer is not proof that it is safe.

- Legal: ask a qualified lawyer or relevant legal-aid service to check jurisdiction, effective date and procedural deadlines.
- Financial: verify figures, fees, tax treatment and risk with an appropriately qualified professional.
- Safety: follow the manufacturer, regulator or emergency service rather than an unverified conversational answer.
- Employment: confirm policy, contract language and local law with the responsible human authority.
Give the reviewer the saved prompts, both answers, cited documents and your classification of the contradiction. That lets the human inspect the same evidence instead of relying on a paraphrase.
What to do when contradictions keep returning
Stop treating rephrasing as verification
Asking the same question five different ways can produce five plausible answers. That demonstrates variability; it does not establish a fact. Use a fixed prompt and a repeatable evaluation set instead.
Create a small evaluation set
Collect representative questions with answers verified by your chosen authorities. Include edge cases, ambiguous wording, dates, units and known failure modes. Run the set after changing the model, retrieval index, system instructions or source collection. Track unsupported claims, citation mismatches and uncertainty labels, not just whether the prose sounds good.
Separate generation from checking
Use one step to draft an answer and another to check each claim against the source set. A checker should be allowed to return “unverified” and should not be instructed to make the draft look complete. For critical workflows, have a human approve the final response.
What model-improvement figures do and do not tell you
Provider evaluations show that newer systems can reduce some errors, but they do not guarantee a correct answer in your conversation. OpenAI’s 2025 Deployment Safety Hub reports a 26% lower hallucination rate for gpt-5-main than GPT-4o and a 65% lower rate for gpt-5-thinking than OpenAI o3 under its stated evaluation method. Those percentages apply to that evaluation, not to every topic, prompt or deployment.
Anthropic reports reviewing about 4,100 simulated Claude sessions in 2025 for eight kinds of misleading behavior. The figure indicates the scale of one evaluation effort; it is not a claim that every real-world session has the same error rate. Treat provider metrics as comparative evidence with a defined method, not as a warranty.
Common failure modes and the practical fix

A repeatable checklist
- Have I saved the complete transcript, exact prompts, date, model or mode, tools and files?
- Can I state the disputed claims in one sentence each?
- Is the disagreement factual, scope-related, definitional or a recommendation trade-off?
- Have I fixed the geography, date, edition, units and definitions?
- Did I ask for a claim-by-claim table with source dates and unresolved questions?
- Did I open every cited primary source and read the relevant passage?
- Did I compare independent authoritative sources when the cost of error is high?
- Have I separated source text from the chatbot’s inference?
- Would a qualified human review this before anyone acts?
The reliable way to stop contradictory chatbot answers from controlling a decision is not to demand greater confidence. Preserve the evidence, constrain the task, ground it in inspectable sources, verify the claims independently and escalate consequential judgments to a human expert.
