Marathon disconnects, queue failures, and PC crashes need different fixes. Start by recording the exact error code and when it appears, then retry once and fully relaunch the game and your platform. If the problem survives that reset, compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet test, separate matchmaking symptoms from a wider service failure, and disable PC overlays and capture tools. This order prevents you from changing router settings when the fault is actually on Bungie’s infrastructure.
Marathon’s official help guidance treats each disconnection code as a distinct category. A repeated problem that produces several different codes may not have one code-specific solution, so the evidence you collect matters as much as the individual fix.

Use this troubleshooting order first
Follow the sequence below rather than changing several variables at once. One change per test makes it possible to identify whether the fault is local, matchmaking-related, software-related, or service-side.

Write down the exact error code, the UTC time, your platform, region, whether the failure occurs at login, in the queue, while loading, or during a match, and whether other devices or players on the same network are affected.
- Retry the activity once. A transient queue or session failure can clear on a second attempt.
- Close Marathon completely. Do not leave it suspended or running in the background. Relaunch it after the platform restart.
- Restart the platform. This clears a stuck game process and gives the next connection attempt a clean session.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Connect the PC or console directly to the router with a Cat 6 Ethernet cable and repeat the same activity.
- Check for a service-side problem. If several activities fail, codes vary, or other players report the same issue, consult official Marathon Help and Bungie status information before repeatedly changing local settings.
- On PC, isolate overlays and capture software. Close Discord, disable Discord and Steam overlays, and test without third-party capture or monitoring utilities.
- Escalate with evidence. Include the code, timestamp, platform, region, network comparison, NAT or UPnP state, and the result of the clean-overlay test.
Capture the exact error before changing anything
A message such as “connection issue” is not enough for diagnosis. Marathon Help explains that each error code represents a different type of disconnection and helps players, Bungie, and platform partners track the cause. Photograph or transcribe the code exactly, including capitalization and spelling. Note whether it appears once or on every attempt.

Record where the failure happens
- Login: the game fails before you reach the main menu.
- Matchmaking queue: you can sign in, but a session is not found or the queue repeatedly resets.
- Loading screen: the match is found, but the transition into the activity fails.
- Mid-match: you enter the activity and are later removed.
- Crash without a code: the game closes, freezes, or returns you to the desktop or dashboard.
Also note whether everyone on your home network fails or only one machine. A single affected device points toward that device or its software; simultaneous failures on multiple devices make a local game installation less likely.
What Marathon error codes can and cannot tell you
The code is a classification, not automatically a complete diagnosis. Use it to describe the event consistently, then compare its timing and repeatability with your other tests.

Perform the official low-risk reset
Restarting is not a universal cure, but it is the least disruptive first test. Marathon Help recommends retrying the activity and fully closing and relaunching Marathon. Restart the platform as part of that clean attempt.

- Exit the current queue or activity.
- Close Marathon rather than leaving it suspended.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Launch Marathon again and retry the same activity.
- If the server closed the previous match, do not expect to rejoin it; create a new session instead.
For OREGANO, retrying or adjusting matchmaking criteria is the documented first response. If it returns, close and relaunch the game before making more changes. Record whether the second attempt produces the same code or a different one.
Test the home network with wired Ethernet
Wi-Fi can introduce interference, weak signal conditions, or access-point congestion that look like a game-server problem. The official Network Troubleshooting Guide recommends switching from Wi-Fi to a wired connection while diagnosing instability. Use a Cat 6 Ethernet cable to connect the gaming device directly to the router, then repeat the activity that failed.

Run a controlled comparison
- Keep the platform, region, activity, and time window as similar as possible.
- Run the failing test once over Wi-Fi and note the result.
- Connect the same device directly to the router with Ethernet.
- Run the same test again and record the code, queue behavior, and whether a disconnect occurs.

A wired test identifies the network path; it does not repair a Bungie outage. Treat the cable as diagnostic hardware or as a stable connection option, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted matches.
Fix matchmaking and queue failures separately
Matchmaking failures happen before a stable game session exists, so they should not be handled exactly like a mid-match disconnect. A long queue, repeated search reset, or OREGANO can reflect matchmaking-side conditions rather than a damaged local installation.
When OREGANO appears
- Retry the activity once.
- Adjust the matchmaking criteria according to the in-game options and Marathon Help guidance.
- If OREGANO returns, fully relaunch Marathon.
- Try again without changing several unrelated network settings at the same time.
Record whether changing criteria changes the code or only the wait time. That distinction helps support determine whether the queue request itself or the connection used to reach it is failing.
When the queue is long but no error appears
Do not repeatedly reboot the router solely because the queue is slow. First determine whether other activities load, whether the problem affects all players on the same network, and whether official channels describe a service incident. A queue that eventually completes is a different symptom from a session that is found and then closed.
Recognize server and network-infrastructure failures
Bungie explains that connection recovery can fail because of an issue with Bungie’s server or network infrastructure. In that situation, connection recovery may not be possible from the player’s device. Repeating local resets, changing ports, or replacing a cable cannot restore a service that is unavailable upstream.

Signs that local changes are unlikely to help
- Multiple activities fail rather than one specific playlist.
- The same household sees failures on more than one device.
- Different attempts produce several unrelated error codes.
- The wired and Wi-Fi tests fail in the same way.
- Other players report a simultaneous outage.
Check official Marathon Help and status channels before performing repeated router changes. If the service is degraded, preserve your notes and test again later instead of making undocumented configuration changes that will complicate later diagnosis.
Isolate PC overlays, capture, and monitoring tools
For a PC crash, freeze, input failure, or crash-adjacent disconnect, remove software that injects an overlay or captures the game window. Bungie’s contemporaneous Server Slam guidance advised disabling Discord and Steam overlays and changing streaming capture behavior when input problems occurred. Applying the same isolation step to crash-adjacent symptoms is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
Clean test procedure
- Close Discord completely, including its background process.
- Disable the Discord overlay.
- Disable the Steam overlay.
- Turn off third-party capture, performance monitoring, and similar utilities.
- If you stream, use whole-screen capture instead of targeting the Marathon game window.
- Launch Marathon and reproduce the same activity or loading sequence.
If the clean test succeeds, restore one tool at a time. Test after each restoration so the interfering component can be identified. If the game still crashes with every overlay and capture utility removed, do not claim that overlays were the cause; report the clean-test result with the crash timing and any code.
Use five comparison axes instead of guessing
When evaluating a fix, compare the same five dimensions. They prevent a router problem, a matchmaking condition, and a PC software conflict from being treated as one defect.

Change UPnP or ports only after the comparison test
The official Network Troubleshooting Guide covers UPnP and port configuration. These settings can matter for matchmaking and connectivity, but they should not be your first change. Begin with the low-risk reset and wired comparison, then document the existing router state before altering anything.

- Write down whether UPnP is enabled and how the router reports NAT status.
- Record the current port-forwarding rules, if any.
- Change one setting at a time, using the router’s own administrative interface.
- Repeat the same Marathon activity and record the exact result.
- If the change has no effect or worsens connectivity, restore the previous state.
A router with configurable UPnP and ports can make controlled testing possible, but a configuration change cannot correct a Bungie-side outage. Avoid collecting multiple undocumented changes that make the original condition impossible to reproduce.

When the problem persists after the reset, network comparison, and PC isolation test, submit a concise timeline rather than a generic complaint. Include:
- The exact Marathon error code or a description of the crash with no code.
- UTC timestamps for at least two failed attempts.
- Platform and region.
- Where the failure occurred: login, matchmaking, loading, or mid-match.
- Whether the same network affected another device or player.
- Wi-Fi and wired results, including whether a Cat 6 Ethernet comparison changed the outcome.
- Router NAT and UPnP state, plus any port changes and their results.
- Whether Discord, Steam overlays, capture, and monitoring tools were disabled.
- Whether the problem produced one repeated code or several different codes.
Describe multiple codes, failures across several networks, or a service-wide incident as possible server or infrastructure issues. Do not present a home-network fault as confirmed when the evidence points beyond your connection.
Scenario playbooks
Disconnected during one match, then normal afterward
Record the code and stage, retry once, and fully relaunch before starting another activity. If the server closed the match, that session cannot be rejoined. If later activities work normally, preserve the code and timestamp in case the event repeats.

Retry, adjust matchmaking criteria, and relaunch if the code returns. If the result is unchanged over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, check official service information and include the queue stage and timestamps in a report.

Several different disconnect codes in one evening
Do not chase each code as a separate local repair. Run one wired comparison, note whether multiple devices fail, and check for infrastructure conditions. The official error-code guidance specifically warns that varied codes may not identify one root cause.
Marathon crashes only while streaming
Perform the clean PC test with Discord and Steam overlays disabled and third-party capture closed. If streaming, switch to whole-screen capture for the reproduction attempt. Restore tools individually only after a stable test.
Marathon crashes even with overlays removed
Record that the clean-overlay test made no difference, along with the loading or match stage and timestamp. This result rules out only the tested interference pattern; it does not prove a network or server fault.

- Do not substitute “connection issue” for the exact code.
- Do not change Wi-Fi, UPnP, ports, overlays, and capture settings simultaneously.
- Do not assume a new Ethernet cable can repair a server outage.
- Do not expect to rejoin a match that the server closed.
- Do not label varied error codes as one confirmed router defect.
- Do not call an overlay the cause merely because disabling it was suggested; treat the result as a controlled test.
How to know when you are finished troubleshooting
You have enough information to escalate when you can state the exact code or crash symptom, the stage at which it occurs, the UTC time, and the result of a wired comparison. Add the scope across devices, NAT or UPnP details, and the clean-overlay result. At that point, further blind resets are less useful than a report that lets support compare your event with matchmaking and infrastructure conditions.
