How to Fix Computer Clean Up: Safely Free Space and Improve Windows or Mac Performance

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Start by inspecting storage, not by deleting random folders. On Windows, open Settings > System > Storage; on macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Review the largest categories, remove only files and applications you recognize, empty Recycle Bin or Trash, and then investigate malware, startup programs, updates, memory, or aging hardware if the computer remains slow. The steps below cover a safe cleanup for both platforms, including what never to delete.

What “computer cleanup” actually fixes

Cleanup addresses a storage problem first. Temporary files, old downloads, application installers, duplicate media, unused applications, and items sitting in Recycle Bin or Trash can consume the working space that Windows or macOS needs for updates, caches, and temporary operations. Removing those items can restore usable capacity and may improve responsiveness indirectly when the drive was nearly full.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Cleanup does not cure every slowdown. A computer can remain sluggish because of malware, too many startup applications, outdated software, background activity, insufficient memory, thermal problems, or hardware that no longer meets the demands of current applications. Treat storage cleanup as one diagnostic branch, then check the other causes if performance does not improve.

Before deleting anything: make a safe plan

Back up irreplaceable files

Copy documents, photographs, videos, project files, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to a separate backup location before a large cleanup. A portable external SSD is useful for large media libraries. Copy the files, open several of them from the destination to verify that the transfer worked, and keep the backup until you are certain the local copies are no longer needed. Moving a file is not the same as backing it up; retain another copy before deleting the original.

Know what is reversible

Action Usually reversible? What to check
Move an item to Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash Yes, until the bin is emptied Restore the item if you discover a mistake; space is not released until the bin is emptied.
Uninstall an application Sometimes Reinstallers, saved settings, licenses, and user data may be separate from the application.
Delete a temporary file Usually no practical recovery Delete only recognized temporary content and skip files reported as in use.
Permanently delete a personal file No, unless a backup exists Confirm the file is duplicated or no longer required before emptying the bin.

Close active applications

Save work and close programs before removing their temporary files or uninstalling them. A file that is currently in use may be locked, recreated, or essential to an active task.

Windows: inspect storage before cleaning

Review categories in Storage

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select the drive you want to examine. Review categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Other.
  3. Open the largest categories and identify specific files, applications, or folders rather than deleting an entire category without review.
  4. Use Cleanup recommendations when it is available. Windows can identify temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, and rarely used applications.

Record how much free space is available before cleaning. That gives you a way to judge whether the selected actions addressed the actual bottleneck.

Use Storage Sense for routine automation

  1. In Settings > System > Storage, open Storage Sense.
  2. Turn it on and review each setting before accepting it.
  3. Choose how often it runs: daily, weekly, monthly, or when free space is low, according to the options shown by your Windows edition.
  4. Review rules for temporary files, Recycle Bin items, and eligible offline OneDrive content. Do not enable a rule that would remove files you still need.
  5. Run Storage Sense manually if the page offers that option, then recheck the free-space figure.

Storage Sense is designed for recurring maintenance, but it is not a substitute for reviewing personal files. Its actions depend on the settings you select and the content Windows considers eligible.

Remove temporary files through Settings

  1. Return to Settings > System > Storage and open Temporary files.
  2. Let Windows calculate the categories. Read each description and select only items you recognize.
  3. Be especially careful with items relating to previous Windows installations or downloads; keep them if you need rollback capability or files that have not been backed up.
  4. Select Remove files and wait for the process to finish.

Run Disk Cleanup for system files

  1. Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open the result.
  2. Select the drive to clean, normally the Windows system drive.
  3. Review the categories and select only content you understand.
  4. Choose Clean up system files when you need to review system-level cleanup categories, then select the drive again if prompted.
  5. Confirm the deletion and allow Windows to complete it before shutting down.

Disk Cleanup can expose system categories that are not shown in a first, user-level scan. Read the description beside each option; a larger number is not automatically a safer choice.

Clean temporary folders manually, without leaving them

Windows guidance permits manual cleanup inside temporary folders. In File Explorer, enter %temp% in the address bar and delete files you recognize as temporary. You can also review C:WindowsTemp. If Windows reports that a file is currently in use, skip it. Stay within these temporary folders; do not use the same approach on arbitrary system directories.

Windows: remove applications and personal files

Uninstall applications you no longer use

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Review the list and sort it using the available size or name controls.
  3. For an application you recognize and no longer need, open its menu and choose Uninstall.
  4. Follow the application’s own removal wizard, then restart if it requests one.

Removing unused applications can also reduce background activity, but do not remove drivers, security software, hardware utilities, or components whose purpose you cannot identify. If an application stores important projects or databases, export or back them up first.

Review Downloads and large personal files

Open Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and other personal folders in File Explorer. Sort by size or date, then decide file by file. Old installers, duplicate recordings, and completed project archives are common candidates. Keep anything needed for tax, legal, work, school, recovery, or an application you still use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move large media to external storage

  1. Connect a portable external SSD with enough free capacity.
  2. Create clearly named folders on the SSD and copy, rather than move, your photos, videos, or archives initially.
  3. Open representative files directly from the SSD and compare counts or folder sizes with the originals.
  4. Keep a second backup of irreplaceable material.
  5. Only after verification, delete the local copies and empty Recycle Bin if you need the space immediately.

Windows: never delete WinSxS manually

The C:WindowsWinSxS folder contains component-store files used by Windows servicing. Do not select it in File Explorer and delete its contents. Microsoft’s warning, in Windows documentation updated March 10, 2025, states: “Deleting files from the WinSxS folder or deleting the entire WinSxS folder may severely damage your system so that your PC might not boot and make it impossible to update.”

Use supported maintenance methods instead:

  • Run the scheduled StartComponentCleanup task through Windows’ supported task-management tools.
  • Use an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run the supported DISM component-cleanup command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup.
  • Use Disk Cleanup’s system-file workflow when it offers component or update cleanup categories.

Component cleanup can take time. Do not interrupt it simply because the folder size does not change immediately.

Windows: if the computer is still slow

Scan for malware

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence if offered, and run a scan.
  3. Follow Windows Security’s instructions for anything it detects.

Malware can consume processor time, memory, network bandwidth, or disk activity; deleting temporary files will not remove it.

Reduce unnecessary startup activity

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Review each entry’s name and startup impact. Disable only programs you recognize and do not need to launch automatically.
  4. Leave security, hardware, accessibility, and synchronization tools enabled unless you understand the consequences.

Review background permissions

Open the installed-app settings for programs you do not need running in the background and turn off unnecessary background permissions where Windows provides that control. A background restriction can affect notifications or synchronization, so test the application afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install updates and restart

Install pending Windows, driver, and application updates from their supported settings pages, then restart. Updates can address performance bugs and compatibility problems that storage cleanup cannot.

Check hardware limits

If the drive has adequate free space and the computer is still slow, check memory usage, disk health, temperatures, and whether the hardware meets the requirements of the software you are running. An older hard drive, limited RAM, or failing storage device requires a different remedy from deleting files.

macOS: use Storage management first

Open the correct storage view

  1. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
  2. On older macOS releases, open About This Mac > Storage.
  3. Wait for macOS to calculate categories such as Applications, Documents, Messages, media, and System Data.
  4. Select a category to inspect individual items before removing anything.

System Data can include caches, logs, local snapshots, and other material managed by macOS. Its displayed size may change as the system recalculates; do not respond by deleting unknown system folders.

Remove unused applications

In the Applications category or Finder’s Applications folder, identify software you no longer use. Quit it, use its supplied uninstaller when one exists, or move the application to Trash. Check the developer’s removal instructions for applications that install helper components, and preserve data files you still need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean Downloads and personal media

Review the Downloads folder, old installers, large videos, duplicate photographs, and completed exports. Delete only recognizable items. For old iPhone or iPad backups, confirm that a newer backup exists or that the device data is otherwise protected before removing the old copy.

Empty Trash to release space

Moving a file to Trash does not free its storage. Control-click Trash and choose Empty Trash only after checking its contents. Permanent deletion begins at that point, so retain a backup for anything irreplaceable.

Move large files to an external SSD

Apple recommends moving large files such as photos and videos to another storage device, including an external drive, before removing local copies. Copy the files, open them from the destination, verify that the folder contents are complete, and keep a backup before deleting the originals.

Use Safe Mode for immediate temporary space

If you need temporary space for an update, Apple says that starting in Safe Mode can clear certain caches that macOS can recreate as needed. Safe Mode is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a reason to manually remove unknown cache or system directories. Follow Apple’s startup procedure for your Mac model, complete the update or other urgent task, and restart normally.

Windows and macOS cleanup compared

Comparison point Windows macOS
Primary storage view Settings > System > Storage System Settings > General > Storage on Ventura 13 or later; About This Mac > Storage on older releases
Automation Storage Sense can run daily, weekly, monthly, or when space is low, depending on selected settings Storage review is primarily manual; Safe Mode can clear certain recreatable caches for an immediate need
Routine targets Temporary files, Cleanup recommendations, Recycle Bin, unused apps, downloads, and personal files Applications, Documents, Messages, media, Downloads, old device backups, Trash, and user data
System cleanup caution Use Disk Cleanup or supported DISM/component-cleanup methods; never delete WinSxS manually Do not manually remove unknown System Data or cache directories
Reversibility Recycle Bin allows restoration until emptied Trash allows restoration until emptied

Why deleting files may not make the computer faster

  • The drive was not the bottleneck. If storage was already plentiful, removing more files may have little effect.
  • Startup load remains high. Programs that launch with Windows can consume resources before you open anything.
  • Malware or unwanted processes are active. Use Windows Security or the equivalent protections already provided by your operating system.
  • Software is outdated. Install operating-system, driver, and application updates.
  • Memory is insufficient. A system that constantly swaps data to disk may remain slow even with abundant free storage.
  • Hardware is aging or failing. A slow mechanical drive, thermal throttling, or storage errors needs hardware diagnosis or replacement.

Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS to observe processor, memory, energy, and disk activity while the slowdown occurs. The resource that stays unusually high points to the next investigation, rather than another round of blind deletion.

Cleanup mistakes to avoid

  • Do not delete random folders under C:Windows, Program Files, or application-support locations.
  • Do not manually delete WinSxS.
  • Do not empty Recycle Bin or Trash until you have checked for files that still matter.
  • Do not remove browser profiles, mail databases, game saves, or creative-project libraries without an export or backup.
  • Do not treat a file’s large size as proof that it is disposable.
  • Do not interrupt an update, Disk Cleanup operation, or component-cleanup task unless the system is clearly unresponsive and you have a recovery plan.
  • Do not assume a third-party cleaner is safer than the operating system’s built-in tools; unsupported deletion rules can remove data or interfere with updates.

A repeatable maintenance routine

  1. Check free space and identify the largest categories.
  2. Back up irreplaceable files.
  3. Remove recognized temporary files through Windows Storage, Disk Cleanup, or macOS Storage management.
  4. Review Downloads, large media, old installers, and unused applications.
  5. Move large files to verified external storage when deletion is not desirable.
  6. Empty Recycle Bin or Trash only after the final review.
  7. Run the supported malware scan, review startup and background activity, install updates, and restart if slowness continues.
  8. Recheck storage and performance so you know which action helped.

If you want a guided shortcut after trying the built-in steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust selected settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
