Finally, check whether S mode or an ARM-based processor is blocking the game. Keep the exact error, game version, Windows version, and device architecture available when you contact the publisher.
Identify what is actually failing
“The game is incompatible” can describe several different failures. A game that cannot install needs a different diagnosis from one that installs but closes immediately, and neither is the same as a game that launches with broken colors or unresponsive controls. Write down the exact symptom before changing settings.

Also record the Windows edition and version, whether the computer uses an Intel or AMD processor or an ARM-based processor such as Snapdragon, and whether Windows is running in S mode. These details determine which fixes are available.

Check the publisher before changing Windows settings
Microsoft recommends checking the publisher’s site for an updated version when an app did not come from Microsoft Store. Search the publisher’s support pages for the exact game name, your Windows version, and the complete error text. An update may replace an old launcher, correct a dependency, or document a known Windows 10 or Windows 11 issue.

Use the game’s official support channel when possible. Include the game version shown by its launcher or installer, the date the problem began, and whether the same copy worked on an earlier Windows installation. If the game stopped working directly after a Windows update, say so; compatibility can change when Windows architecture, security features, or other system behavior changes.
Do not assume that a third-party download described as a “fix” is equivalent to an official patch. Unofficial launchers, replacement executable files, and random DLL downloads can create security and licensing problems while obscuring the original cause.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
Windows includes a compatibility troubleshooter for older programs. On Windows 11, open it through this exact path:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts and test the game when Windows asks you to.
The troubleshooter is a diagnostic and compatibility-settings workflow, not a guarantee that every legacy game will run. Keep a note of what it changes and whether the result differs between the game’s launcher and the game executable itself. If the troubleshooter reports that no fix was found, retain that result for the publisher rather than repeatedly running it.

Windows 10 has the same general compatibility feature, but the Settings labels and location can differ by build. Use Windows Settings search for “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter” if the Windows 11 path is not present.
Install available Windows and device updates
A previously working program can stop working after a Windows update, but an old graphics or chipset driver can also be part of the problem. Install normal updates offered by Windows Update, including applicable device-driver updates, before testing again. Restart Windows after updates finish and record the new Windows build if the behavior changes.
Do not use a driver update as a reason to alter several unrelated settings at once. Change one thing, restart if Windows requests it, and test the same game scenario. That gives you a usable before-and-after record for support.

Check DirectX without chasing a “latest” installer
For a rendering or launch error that mentions DirectX, first check what Windows reports. Type dxdiag into Windows Search and open the diagnostic tool. On the System tab, read the DirectX version and save the displayed system information if the publisher requests it.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version for those Windows releases. That does not prove that every older game’s specific legacy dependency or component is present, so the result is a fact to report, not a universal repair instruction. Repeatedly installing a package labeled “latest DirectX” is not a general solution and can leave the original issue unresolved.
If the game publisher names a particular legacy component, follow that publisher’s documented installation method and verify that it applies to your Windows edition. If no title-specific instruction exists, send the dxdiag result and the exact game error to the publisher rather than downloading DLL files from an unrelated site.
Windows 11: test Optimizations for windowed games only when it fits
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games, but its scope is narrow. It applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. It is not a universal fix for an installer that will not run, a missing dependency, or a game that never reaches its first window.

To review per-game graphics preferences:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Display, then Graphics.
- Locate the game in the app list. Add its executable if Windows does not list it.
- Open the game’s graphics options and test the relevant windowed-game optimization setting.
- Close and restart the game after changing the setting.
Use this branch when the game launches but shows tearing, an unstable frame presentation, or another display problem in windowed or borderless mode. If the game uses an older graphics API, runs only in exclusive fullscreen, or fails before displaying a window, this Windows 11 feature may not apply. Record the mode and DirectX information when asking the publisher for a title-specific recommendation.

Use Auto HDR as an image option, not a compatibility repair
Auto HDR is a Windows 11 display feature for HDR-capable screens. It can change the appearance of some standard-dynamic-range games by expanding their presentation to HDR, but it does not repair a broken installer, missing runtime, immediate crash, or unsupported processor architecture.
If the game already launches and your display supports HDR, treat Auto HDR as an optional visual experiment. Change it only after the underlying game works, compare the result with it off, and keep it disabled while diagnosing a crash or installation failure. A color or brightness change after enabling Auto HDR is a display result, not proof that the game has become more compatible.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode impose additional app and driver restrictions. Apps outside Microsoft Store may be blocked, and Microsoft notes limitations involving some OpenGL software and anti-cheat drivers. Those restrictions can affect an older indie game even when the same game runs on a standard Windows installation.
Confirm the edition in Settings and compare the game’s distribution method with the restrictions on that device. If the game is offered through Microsoft Store, use the supported Store version when it matches the publisher’s instructions. If it requires an installer or driver that S mode cannot allow, ask the publisher whether the game supports S mode before making a system change.
Switching out of S mode is not a reversible toggle. Do not recommend or perform that change merely because a game is old or because a generic guide suggests it. Consider it only when the specific game requires an unavailable app and the publisher confirms that a non-S-mode Windows configuration is supported. Back up important data and understand the consequence before proceeding.
Check processor architecture on ARM-based Windows PCs
Some newer Windows PCs use ARM processors, including Snapdragon systems. An older indie game may depend on an executable, graphics component, or driver that the publisher has not tested for that architecture. Windows can present an app as installable while a required component still lacks support.
Identify whether the PC is ARM-based and provide that information to the publisher. Ask directly whether the game, its launcher, copy-protection component, and any anti-cheat or graphics driver support the device. Do not assume that a workaround documented for Intel or AMD hardware will behave the same way on ARM.

If installation fails
- Capture the complete installer message rather than paraphrasing it.
- Check the publisher for a current installer or a notice about Windows 10, Windows 11, S mode, or ARM support.
- Confirm whether the copy is from Microsoft Store or another distribution channel, because the supported installation path can differ.
- Do not begin by changing HDR or windowed-game settings; those features cannot repair a failing installer.
If the game exits immediately
- Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and record its result.
- Check Windows Update and available device-driver updates.
- Use
dxdiagif the error mentions graphics or DirectX. - Send the exact message, game version, Windows version, processor architecture, and S mode status to the publisher if the exit continues.
If the game launches with visual glitches
- Record whether the game is windowed, borderless, or fullscreen.
- Check DirectX with
dxdiag. - On Windows 11, test Optimizations for windowed games only when the game is compatible with DirectX 10 or 11 and is running windowed or borderless.
- If the display supports HDR, compare Auto HDR on and off only after the game is otherwise stable.
If controls or performance are the problem
- Describe exactly which input fails and whether menus, gameplay, or only fullscreen mode is affected.
- Record when slowdown begins and whether it appeared after a Windows update.
- Install applicable Windows and device-driver updates, then retest without changing several graphics options at once.
- Ask the publisher which controllers, input methods, and Windows configurations the game supports; the general Windows tools cannot establish a title-specific input fix.
Keep a reproducible test record
Compatibility work becomes much faster when every test is documented. Use a short log with the date, Windows version, game version, launch mode, setting changed, and result. For example, note “Windows 11, game version shown by launcher, borderless mode, windowed-game optimization changed, game restarted, visual glitch unchanged.” This prevents you from repeating failed combinations and gives the publisher actionable information.
Save screenshots of errors, the dxdiag System tab, and any compatibility-troubleshooter result that does not contain sensitive personal information. Do not publish license keys, account credentials, or complete crash dumps in a public forum unless the publisher explicitly requests them through a secure channel.
When to escalate to the publisher
Escalate when the official update is installed, the compatibility troubleshooter has been tested, and the relevant DirectX or Windows 11 display checks do not resolve the issue. A publisher can confirm whether the game has a required legacy component, an unsupported launcher, an architecture limitation, or a known Windows-specific bug. The publisher may also have a title-specific patch that Windows cannot discover automatically.
Include:
- Game title and exact version.
- Where the game was obtained and whether installation or launching fails.
- Windows edition and version.
- Processor architecture, including whether the computer is ARM-based.
- Whether Windows is in S mode.
- Exact error text and a screenshot if useful.
- DirectX information from
dxdiagwhen graphics are involved. - Whether the problem began after a Windows update.
- Which official troubleshooting steps you already tried and what changed.
If no game-specific workaround exists, that limitation is important information. It is safer to stop than to install unverified executables, disable security protections broadly, or switch out of S mode without confirmation that the game requires it.
