Add useful alternative text, make links and controls understandable, organize headings, correct contrast, and check keyboard operation. A WordPress accessibility checker can help find issues, but it cannot prove a site is fully accessible; theme, plugin, and custom-code problems may need a developer.
What WordPress accessibility guidance does—and does not—guarantee
WordPress says its admin and bundled themes aim for WCAG 2.2 Level AA “where possible,” but it does not guarantee that every theme is compliant. An “accessibility-ready” theme has been checked against basic requirements; that label is not a guarantee that every page, plugin, or piece of content on a site is accessible. WordPress’s accessibility overview explains that distinction.
WordPress Developer Resources says ecosystem code—including WordPress core, WordPress.org sites, and official plugins—is expected to conform to WCAG 2.2 AA. That project-wide target does not establish the legal obligations for an individual site, which depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. WordPress accessibility coding standards also encourage interfaces that help authors create accessible content, including alternative text, captions, and semantic structure.
Start with a page-by-page baseline
Use a checker to identify likely issues, then inspect each one in context. Record the affected page and element, whether it comes from editable content or shared theme/plugin output, and what you changed. Re-run the check after edits. Some tools report findings in the editor and on the front end; confirm that the visible, visitor-facing page behaves as expected.

For example, Equalize Digital’s Accessibility Checker documentation describes scans for posts and pages. Its free version does not scan custom post types such as WooCommerce products; the vendor says full-site scanning and custom post-type checks require Pro. That is a limit of this tool, not a description of every accessibility plugin.
Automated findings are leads, not a conformance verdict. The plugin documentation states: “True accessibility can only be achieved through a combination of automated scans, manual review, and remediation of identified problems.” A scanner may identify a missing attribute, for example, but a person must decide whether an image description is useful or whether a control works in practice.

Fix common content problems in WordPress
Write purposeful alternative text for images
For an informative image, write alternative text that conveys its relevant information or purpose in that page’s context. Avoid describing every visual detail if it does not help someone understand the content. For a decorative image, use the platform’s decorative-image handling rather than adding a redundant description. A missing-alt flag can identify an image to review, but only a human can judge whether its alternative is accurate and helpful.
Make links and controls understandable
Replace vague link text such as “click here” or repeated “read more” with wording that identifies the destination or action. The surrounding sentence can provide context, but the link should still make sense when encountered as a link. For buttons and form controls, provide a visible, associated label and a name that assistive technology can expose. Check the actual rendered control and its surrounding text; automated tools catch some missing labels and ambiguous links, not every confusing interaction.

Use headings to show the content hierarchy
Choose heading levels to express the structure of the page, not just to obtain a particular font size. Make the hierarchy understandable to a reader moving through the page by headings. If a checker flags heading order, inspect the outline and correct the underlying structure rather than changing levels only for appearance.
Add headers to data tables
For a table that presents data, identify its column or row headers so the relationships between values are clear. Do not use a table purely to control page layout. A checker may flag missing table headings, but review whether the markup communicates the table’s actual structure.

Correct contrast and avoid color-only meaning
When a checker reports low contrast, adjust the text or background color in the block, theme, or design system, then verify the rendered combination. Do not use color as the only way to convey meaning; pair it with text, a symbol, or another visible cue. Gradients, background images, transparency, and interactive states can make a color pair difficult to assess from a single setting, so inspect those cases directly. If you need to judge a specific color combination against WCAG, consult the relevant criterion rather than relying on a generic “pass” from a quick scan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the visitor-facing site with a keyboard
Use the keyboard alone to move through a representative page and its key interactions. WordPress Developer Resources summarizes WCAG Guideline 2.1 with the instruction: “Make all functionality available from a keyboard.” Its Accessibility Coding Standards describe keyboard access as part of the Operable principle.
- Move through links, menus, form fields, buttons, and dialogs using the keyboard.
- Check that the current focus location is visible as you move.
- Open interactive components and confirm you can operate them and move out of them again.
- Repeat the check on the public-facing page, not only in the WordPress editor, because themes and plugins affect what visitors encounter.
If a menu or dialog traps keyboard focus, a control cannot be reached, or focus is difficult to see, note the page and the component. These symptoms often point to shared theme, plugin, or custom-code output rather than a content-only edit.
When to contact a developer
If the problem is in a theme, plugin, or custom code and you cannot correct it in the editor, report the affected page, element, and steps that reproduce the barrier to the responsible developer. If it remains unresolved—or blocks a critical task such as navigation or submitting a form—seek qualified accessibility remediation help. A scan, overlay, or published accessibility statement is not proof that every part of a site conforms.
