Start with playback and volume, verify the output device, reconnect Bluetooth, and restart the source. Only then move to multipoint isolation, the model-specific reset procedure, or initialization.
This guide covers no sound, one-sided audio, dropouts, poor computer sound, unexpected shutoff, multipoint switching, pairing failures, and the point at which Sony support or repair is appropriate.

Identify which part of the system is failing
Before changing settings, determine whether the fault follows the headphones or stays with one source device. Play a familiar track from the phone, then test the computer or another Bluetooth source if available. A problem on every source points toward the headset, its settings, or Bluetooth state. A problem on only one source usually indicates output routing, an audio profile, an operating-system setting, or that source’s Bluetooth stack.

| What you notice | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No sound at all | Playback, volume, or output routing | Confirm a track is playing, raise volume on both devices, and select WH-1000XM5 as the output. |
| Sound works on one device but not another | Source-device routing or Bluetooth profile | Disconnect and reconnect on the failing source, then restart that source. |
| Audio will not move from phone to computer | Multipoint routing | Stop playback and close the first device’s audio app before starting the second. |
| Audio cuts out while walking or moving the source | Bluetooth link, interference, or source profile | Test close to the source with other Bluetooth audio devices disconnected. |
| Headphones go silent or power off after wearing them | Wearing detection or Automatic Power Off | Place the ear pads directly over your ears and review the power setting in Sound Connect. |
| Problem remains on several sources | Headset state or hardware | Use the current WH-1000XM5 Help Guide for reset/initialization, then contact Sony support if necessary. |
Run these reversible checks first
- Confirm playback. Make sure the application is actually playing audio rather than paused, muted, or waiting for a network stream.
- Check both volume controls. Raise the source device’s volume and the headphones’ volume. Some phones and computers maintain separate application, system, and communications volumes.
- Select the headphones explicitly. In the phone or computer’s sound output selector, choose WH-1000XM5 instead of the built-in speakers, a monitor, a dock, or another paired device.
- Reconnect Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off and on at the source, disconnect the WH-1000XM5, and connect it again. Do not start with a factory initialization; that erases all pairings.
- Restart the source. A phone or computer can retain a stale Bluetooth connection even when its menu appears connected. Restarting it clears that temporary state.
- Charge the headphones. A low battery can complicate testing and can look like a connection or power fault. Confirm a charge before deeper troubleshooting.
After each change, test with one known-working track. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.

Fix Bluetooth pairing and connection failures
Make the first connection cleanly
Keep the headphones near the source while pairing. In the source device’s Bluetooth menu, select WH-1000XM5 and wait for the connected status before opening the music application. If the listing is present but will not connect, disconnect it, toggle Bluetooth on the source, and try again after restarting the source.
Do not assume that a successful pairing means the source is currently routing sound to the headset. Bluetooth connection status and the operating system’s selected playback output are separate decisions; check both.
When the headphones connect but immediately disconnect
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices from the source and test again.
- Move close to the source and remove obvious physical obstructions during the test.
- Stop playback on every other paired source, especially if multipoint is enabled.
- Restart the source and reconnect before attempting a reset.
If the WH-1000XM5 fails on more than one source after these checks, use the current model-specific Help Guide rather than a button sequence copied from another Sony headset. Sony’s general initialization page illustrates a different model, WH-1000XM2, and directs owners to the manual for their own model.

Fix no sound, one-sided sound, or intermittent sound
No sound although Bluetooth says “connected”
- Start or resume a track and verify that the application is not muted.
- Raise the source volume and the WH-1000XM5 volume.
- Open the source’s audio-output control and select WH-1000XM5.
- Pause the track, disconnect the headphones, reconnect them, and test again.
- Restart the phone or computer if the output selector continues to show another device.
If two devices are connected, follow the multipoint procedure below before concluding that the headphones have failed. Silent streaming from the first device can keep the headset attached to it even when that device appears idle.
Only one ear produces sound
First test another track and application. Confirm that the source has not enabled a left-right balance, mono, accessibility, or communications setting that affects only one channel. Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, then test a second source. If one-sided sound follows the headphones across sources, consult the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide and Sony’s support route; do not infer a failed driver from a single application test.

Sound starts and stops
Check whether the pause occurs only when you move away from the source, switch applications, or connect another Bluetooth device. Test with the source nearby and with multipoint temporarily isolated. If the interruption happens across several sources, perform the model-specific reset procedure described in the Help Guide after documenting your current pairings.
Fix multipoint audio that will not switch devices
Multipoint allows the WH-1000XM5 to remain connected to two Bluetooth devices, but it does not guarantee that audio will switch whenever a second device starts playing. Sony Support warns that “silent streaming can continue on the first device when the second device is connected to the headset via Bluetooth.” In that state, the first source still holds the audio path.
Use Sony’s recommended switching sequence
- Open the Sony Sound Connect app and confirm that Connect to 2 devices simultaneously is enabled.
- On the first source, stop playback completely.
- Close that source’s music or video application. Leaving it open can allow silent streaming to continue.
- Start playback on the second source and confirm that its output is set to WH-1000XM5.
- If there is still no sound, pause the second source, disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth on that source, and test again.
For diagnosis, turn multipoint off temporarily and connect only one source. If single-device operation is reliable but switching is not, the headphones are probably responding to source routing rather than suffering a general audio failure.
Improve sound quality on a computer
Computer Bluetooth menus often expose multiple profiles. Sony’s general Bluetooth guidance states that the A2DP profile is required for high-quality music streaming. Some computers initially prioritize connection stability, and a communications profile may provide lower-quality, mono audio instead of music playback.
Check the computer’s output and profile
- Open the operating system’s sound-output selector and choose the WH-1000XM5 music or headphones output, not the computer speakers or a monitor.
- Close calling, meeting, or voice-chat applications temporarily; these can request a communications profile.
- If the operating system presents separate entries such as a music “Headphones” output and a communications “Headset” output, choose the music/headphones entry for listening.
- Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth after changing the output.
- Restart the computer if it keeps selecting the wrong profile.
Menu names differ by Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and computer manufacturer. Sony’s general article is not a guarantee of the current menu path on every platform, so use the computer maker’s current instructions for profile selection. A brief quality change immediately after connection can occur while the computer negotiates its Bluetooth mode; judge the result after the connection settles.

Stop audio dropouts and skipping
Separate Bluetooth range from application problems
Play a downloaded or locally stored track with the source close to the headphones. If local playback is stable but streaming skips, investigate the application or network connection. If local playback also skips, disconnect other Bluetooth peripherals and retest. This isolates source congestion and wireless interference without erasing the headset’s pairings.
Test one source at a time
Multipoint, a nearby second source, or an application that continues silent playback can make an apparent dropout look random. Stop every other source, close its audio app, and test a single connection. If the fault disappears, re-enable devices one at a time to identify the source that is reclaiming the audio path.
When dropouts persist
Restart the source and reconnect. If the same behavior occurs on multiple sources at close range, follow the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide’s current reset instructions. Keep initialization as a last resort because it removes Bluetooth pairing information.
Prevent unexpected shutoff or silence after wearing the headphones
The WH-1000XM5 uses a wearing sensor. Sony Support says: “When you wear the headphones over a cap, cloth, a scarf, or hair, etc., the sensors may not be able to detect that you are wearing them and may turn them off.” Thick hair or fabric can therefore produce a shutdown or silence that looks like a battery or Bluetooth failure.
Correct the fit
- Remove a cap, scarf, or cloth from between the ear pads and your ears for the test.
- Position each ear pad directly over the corresponding ear.
- Play audio for more than a few minutes without touching the pads and observe whether detection remains stable.
Disable automatic shutoff if detection remains unreliable
In Sound Connect, open All device settings → Power/Battery → Automatic Power Off → Do not turn off. This prevents the automatic power setting from shutting the headphones down when wearing detection is misread. Confirm the battery is charged before relying on this setting; it changes the response to detection but does not repair a depleted battery.

Deal with imbalance, noise, or other audio symptoms
Imbalance
Play a centered recording and check the source’s left-right balance and mono settings. Test with another application and another source. If the imbalance remains everywhere, record when it occurs and use Sony’s model support page rather than trying to bend, open, or physically modify the ear cups.
Unexpected background noise
First determine whether the sound is in the recording or is present with playback paused. Test in a quiet location and with a second source. Keep the troubleshooting focused on whether the noise follows the headphones, the source, or a particular application; this distinction is more useful to support than a description from one track.
Call audio versus music audio
Voice and music applications can request different Bluetooth profiles. If music quality changes after joining a call, leave the call application, reselect the WH-1000XM5 music output, and reconnect if necessary. Use the computer or phone’s current audio settings for detailed microphone and communications-profile controls.

Sony treats reset and initialization as different operations:
| Operation | What it does | Pairings | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset | Restarts the headset’s operating state according to the model Help Guide. | Retains Bluetooth pairing information, according to Sony. | After basic connection and routing checks fail but you want to avoid re-pairing every device. |
| Initialization | Returns the headphones to factory settings. | Erases all Bluetooth pairing information; every source must be paired again. | When the model-specific guide recommends it after other troubleshooting, or when persistent state corruption is suspected. |
Use the current WH-1000XM5 Help Guide for the exact button or charging-state procedure. Do not copy instructions labeled for WH-1000XM2 or another model. Before initialization, note the names of the phone, computer, television, and other sources you will need to pair again.

Check firmware and the correct Sony documentation
Sony’s US WH-1000XM5 support page displayed firmware version 2.5.1 with a release date of December 18, 2025, and listed a WH-1000XM5 Help Guide dated May 25, 2025. Firmware pages can change, so check the model support page for the version currently offered in your region before deciding that the headphones are up to date.
Sony’s support categories include Bluetooth pairing, no sound or one-sided sound, imbalance, volume, skipping, noise, power, battery, noise canceling, calls, and physical damage. Use the category that matches the symptom and follow the current WH-1000XM5 instructions. A general headphone article may describe a different model, different controls, or older software.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Contact Sony support or use its regional repair and parts/accessories route when the fault remains after correct output selection, reconnection, source restart, single-device testing, and the model-specific reset or initialization procedure. This is especially important when the same failure appears on more than one playback device, when the headset will not power on after charging, or when there is physical damage.
