Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by finding the scope of the failure: test a second streaming app on the TV and another device on the same Wi‑Fi. One failing app usually points to that app or its service; every app failing only on the TV points to the TV or its connection; several devices failing points to the router, internet service or an outage. Then check the TV’s network-status screen, restart the TV and modem/router, and retest before changing settings or buying equipment.
Use this diagnosis before changing anything
Write down exactly what happens: the TV cannot find a network, it connects but says there is no internet, playback pauses with a spinner, a video will not start, or the connection drops after a few minutes. The wording matters because each symptom suggests a different layer of the system.

Test another app on the same TV
Open a second streaming app that you normally use. If the second app plays normally, the television’s Wi‑Fi connection is probably working and the first app or its service needs attention. Try the affected app again later and check that service’s own support or status information. If every app fails, continue with the TV and network checks below.

Test another device on the same Wi‑Fi
Use a phone or computer connected to the same wireless network. If that device also cannot reach websites or streaming services, investigate the modem/router and internet service rather than repeatedly changing TV settings. If other devices work while the TV does not, keep the investigation focused on the TV, its distance from the router, or its software.

Interpret the three common combinations
| What you observe | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One app fails; other TV apps work | Affected app, account or streaming service | Retry later, check the service’s support, then use the app-level steps in this guide. |
| All TV apps fail; other devices work | TV network settings, TV software or local Wi‑Fi coverage | Open the TV’s network status, reconnect, restart, update and test signal conditions. |
| TV and several other devices fail | Router, modem, internet service or a wider outage | Restart network equipment, check its connection lights and contact your internet provider if service remains down. |
| Playback fails only at certain times | Network congestion, wireless interference or service demand | Check other devices’ usage, move the router or test a wired connection. |
Check the TV’s actual Wi‑Fi connection
Do not infer the connection from a Wi‑Fi icon alone. Open the television’s Network or Network & Internet settings and use its connection diagnosis or Network Status screen when available. The screen should show whether the TV is connected to the access point and whether the access point can reach the internet. That distinction separates a TV-to-router problem from a router-to-internet problem.
Confirm the network and password
- Make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled.
- Verify that the TV is joining your intended home network, not a guest network, a neighbour’s similarly named network, or an old router name.
- Re-enter the password carefully. A changed router password requires the TV to forget the old credentials and join again.
- Check whether the router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names. Select the band your TV and router support; do not assume that a particular band is always faster or compatible.
Google TV path
On Google TV, open Settings → Network & Internet. Select the wireless network, review its connection details and run any available diagnosis. Menu wording can change with the device maker’s software skin, so use the model’s support instructions if your labels differ.
Samsung path
Samsung’s menu path varies by model and software version. Open the TV’s network settings and select Network Status (or the equivalent diagnostic item) to see whether the break is between the TV and router or between the router and internet. The cited Samsung guidance is from its Caribbean support locale, so regional menus may not match your screen exactly.
When the TV sees no networks
Restart the TV and router first. If nearby networks appear on another device but the TV’s list remains empty, check that Wi‑Fi is enabled and that the router is not using a band or channel the TV cannot use. Move the TV temporarily closer to the router for a test; distance and walls can make a network disappear even when a phone still detects it.

Restart the TV, modem and router in the right order
A restart clears temporary software and network-state errors. Sony’s official troubleshooting documentation states: “The power reset or restart of the TV is a recommended troubleshooting step to resolve many temporary issues.” Use your manufacturer’s procedure; the timings below are Sony examples, not universal requirements.
- Stop playback and turn the TV off from its remote or menu.
- If the TV’s menu restart does not help, unplug the TV. Sony describes leaving its TV unplugged for two minutes before reconnecting it.
- Unplug the modem and router. Sony describes waiting about 60 seconds, then reconnecting the modem first and allowing it to finish starting before powering the router.
- Wait until the router shows a normal internet connection. This can take several minutes.
- Turn on the TV, reconnect if prompted, open the app that failed and test the same content again.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle equipment while it is updating. If the router or TV displays an update screen, let that process finish.
Install available updates
Check for TV system updates in the television’s support or system menu. Also check the router’s firmware-update control if the manufacturer provides one. Updates can correct compatibility and connection defects, but the exact path and availability depend on model, region and software version. If an update requires a wired connection or a USB file, follow the maker’s model-specific instructions rather than interrupting the process.

Improve Wi‑Fi coverage and reduce network load
If the TV works near the router but fails in its normal location, the likely issue is coverage or interference. Change one condition at a time so you can tell what helped.

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Improve the router’s position
- Place the router in an open, elevated position rather than inside a cabinet or behind the TV.
- Reduce walls, metal objects and large appliances between the router and TV where practical.
- Keep the router away from sources of wireless interference, including some cordless devices and other crowded wireless equipment.
- After moving it, restart the TV’s network connection and test the same app and title.
Check competing traffic
Cloud backups, game downloads, video calls and several simultaneous streams can consume the available capacity. Pause large transfers temporarily and retest. If playback becomes reliable only when other devices are idle, the problem is network capacity rather than an app that is permanently broken. Router capacity and the internet plan both matter; a newer router cannot create more bandwidth than the service entering your home.
Choose a band deliberately
Google TV Help suggests trying 5 GHz when it is available, and Google’s streaming-device guidance also emphasizes router placement and device capacity. A 5 GHz signal can provide useful performance at short range, while 2.4 GHz often travels farther through walls. The result depends on the TV, router, channel conditions and home layout, so treat 5 GHz as a test, not a universal speed guarantee. If the TV is far from the router, the 2.4 GHz network may remain more reliable.
Test with a cable before buying hardware
If both the TV and router have compatible Ethernet ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and disable or disconnect Wi‑Fi for the test. Stable playback over the cable strongly implicates wireless coverage or interference. Google TV Help recommends a cable as an option for slow Wi‑Fi. Some streaming devices lack an Ethernet port and use a manufacturer-specific Ethernet adapter; an adapter documented for a particular Chromecast or Google TV device should not be assumed to fit every television.

- Enable a hotspot on a phone with sufficient mobile data.
- On the TV, open its Network settings and join that hotspot.
- Play the same content that failed on home Wi‑Fi for several minutes.
- Disconnect from the hotspot and restore the normal home network when finished.
If the stream works on the hotspot, the TV and app are less likely to be the root cause; investigate the home router, wireless conditions or internet service. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent solution. Mobile data allowances, hotspot speed and carrier restrictions can make it unsuitable for regular viewing. If the stream still fails on the hotspot, continue with TV software and app troubleshooting.
DNS changes are an advanced, reversible test
Sony mentions changing DNS as an optional step for users comfortable editing network settings. DNS translates service names into internet addresses; a slow or malfunctioning DNS path can delay connection setup, although it is not the usual cure for weak Wi‑Fi or an overloaded link. Before changing anything, record the original DNS values. Make one change, retest, and restore the originals if performance worsens. Avoid this step if you cannot return to the TV’s previous automatic settings.
Fix an individual app without resetting the whole TV
When only one service fails, work at the app level first. Confirm that the TV’s date and time are correct if the app reports sign-in or certificate errors, and make sure you are using the intended profile. Sign out and back in only after confirming that you know the account credentials.

- Confirm the active Google TV profile is the one that normally uses the service.
- Install any pending system update and restart the device.
- Open the app’s settings and clear its data if the previous steps fail.
- Launch the app and sign in again if requested.
Clearing app data removes that app’s local sign-in and preferences, so have the account email and password available. The precise control can vary by Google TV device maker; use its on-screen app-management path if the labels differ.

When the service itself is having trouble
If the same app fails on the TV and on another device using a different connection, the service or account is the leading suspect. Check the provider’s support information and wait for a reported incident to clear. Reinstalling the app repeatedly will not repair a provider outage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use network reset and factory reset only later
A network reset removes saved connection information and is appropriate after ordinary reconnecting fails or when the TV retains an incorrect configuration. Record the Wi‑Fi name and password first. Follow the exact model-specific path, then join the network again and rerun the connection test.
A factory reset is a last resort because it erases device data. Google explicitly warns that a factory reset erases all data on the device. You may lose installed apps, account details, preferences and downloads. Samsung distinguishes a network reset from a factory reset and notes that you must reconnect to Wi‑Fi after a full factory reset.
- Back up or record settings and account information that you will need afterward.
- Try the TV’s network reset, if available, before a factory reset.
- Restart and test with a second app.
- Only then start the factory-reset command from the model’s support instructions.
- Complete the setup wizard, install updates, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test before restoring every app.
Choose equipment only when the diagnosis justifies it
| Diagnosed condition | Possible remedy | Compatibility checks |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless interference or weak signal at the TV | Ethernet cable, improved router placement or a mesh Wi‑Fi system | Confirm the TV and router have compatible Ethernet ports; for mesh, check placement and whether the system works with your existing router. |
| Several rooms have poor coverage | Mesh networking or an additional access point | Map where coverage fails and place nodes where they still receive a strong signal, not in the dead zone. |
| Too many active devices competing for capacity | Traffic management, a higher-capacity router or an internet-plan review | Verify that congestion, rather than an app outage or ISP fault, is the repeatable cause. |
| App outage or router-to-internet failure | No new Wi‑Fi equipment will directly fix it | Confirm the service or internet link is restored before purchasing hardware. |
Google lists mesh networking as a way to improve coverage, but a mesh system is not a universal remedy. First test placement, interference, competing traffic and a cable. A router upgrade also cannot repair a streaming provider outage or an interruption from the internet provider.
Symptom-specific recovery paths
“TV won’t connect to Wi‑Fi”
- Check that Wi‑Fi is enabled and the intended network is selected.
- Re-enter the password and verify the router is broadcasting a compatible band.
- Restart the TV and modem/router.
- Move the TV closer to the router or test Ethernet.
- Use the TV’s Network Status diagnosis; if several devices also fail, contact the internet provider after restarting network equipment.
“Wi‑Fi signal drops or intermittently disconnects”
- Observe whether drops occur when other household devices are busy.
- Reduce obstructions and interference, then test a different band where supported.
- Update TV and router software.
- Compare normal Wi‑Fi with an Ethernet or hotspot test to separate wireless conditions from the TV itself.
“Buffering during playback”
- Try a second app and another device to establish whether the service or network is affected.
- Pause competing downloads and backups.
- Test closer to the router, on a suitable 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz network, or over Ethernet.
- If only one service buffers everywhere, check that service’s support rather than resetting the TV.
“Videos won’t play”
- Confirm the TV has internet access in its network-status screen.
- Restart the TV and router, then update the TV software.
- Check the app profile and sign-in; clear that app’s data only after simpler steps fail.
- Use a hotspot test if the home network remains suspect.
When to contact the internet provider or TV manufacturer
Contact the internet provider when multiple devices cannot reach the internet after the modem/router restart, the router reports a service fault, or the connection repeatedly drops even on a wired test. Contact the TV manufacturer when the TV cannot detect any networks while other devices can, its network-status diagnostics report a hardware or persistent software error, or the problem remains after an update, reconnect and app-isolation test. Have the TV model, software version, network-status result, router model and the exact time and frequency of failures ready; those details help support staff distinguish a device fault from an upstream outage.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next interruption
- Keep the TV and router firmware current when updates are offered.
- Leave the router in an open, central location rather than behind furniture.
- Reserve Ethernet for a TV that sits near the router and needs consistent playback.
- Monitor which devices create heavy traffic during viewing.
- Record your Wi‑Fi password and original DNS settings before changing network configuration.
- Keep factory reset as a final recovery step, not a routine response to one app’s outage.
