How to Fix Common Samsung Galaxy Foldable Screen Problems

A crease by itself is usually normal on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip. A bubble or lifting edge in the inner film is usually a film problem, while a black or white line, spreading spot, crack, flicker, or dead touch strip can indicate damage beneath it. Start with the least invasive checks, never pick at the factory film or press the crease, and use a Samsung service center or authorized repair provider when symptoms persist or suggest internal damage.

Know which screen behavior is normal

Samsung’s Infinity Flex display is a layered assembly: an AMOLED panel, Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), a protective layer, and a replaceable protective film. The panel and glass are designed to bend, so the center can look or feel different from the rest of the screen.

Samsung describes the expected appearance this way: “The foldable display has some fine bends depending on the angle, with a thin, flexible glass and film for the folding function.” A visible crease that changes with the viewing angle, without cracks, lines, spots, flicker, or touch problems, is normally a characteristic of the folding design rather than a failed display.

Damage is more likely when a mark is new, grows, appears with abnormal brightness, or is accompanied by touch failure. A drop, pressure at the crease, or debris trapped between the panels can damage the UTG or display layers. Samsung says impact can produce black or white dots and lines, cracks, abnormal brightness, or damage that spreads around the fold.

Use this symptom triage before trying a fix

What you see or feel Most likely category What to do first
A consistent crease visible only at certain angles Normal flexible-display behavior Continue normal use, but keep pressure and debris away from the hinge.
Bubbles, scratches, or an edge lifting along the crease Worn or damaged inner protective film Do not peel or press it down. Arrange film replacement through Samsung service.
Touch misses taps or gestures near one area Software, accessory, moisture, setting, or display damage Restart, remove accessories, dry the phone and your hands, then test again.
Black or white line, black spot, crack, flicker, or a dead strip Possible UTG or internal display damage Stop pressing or repeatedly folding the area and arrange professional inspection.
Symptoms began after a drop, pressure, or something trapped between panels Possible impact or hinge-related damage Keep the phone closed or open only as needed and contact an authorized repair provider.

Fix bubbles, scratches, or lifting on the inner screen

The inner protective film is a consumable layer. Samsung says bubbles, scratches, and lifting can develop with use and may mean the film alone is damaged. This is different from a crease that is uniformly visible in the flexible display.

What you can safely do

  1. Stop manipulating the edge. Do not pick at a corner, push bubbles toward the hinge, or smooth a lifted section with a fingernail or card. Pressure can transfer to the flexible layers underneath.
  2. Keep the factory film in place. Do not remove it just because the surface looks imperfect. The film is part of the intended protection for the inner display.
  3. Do not apply a generic replacement. Samsung warns against replacing the inner film with an unapproved film, sticker, or adhesive. A material that is too rigid, too thick, or bonded incorrectly can interfere with folding or touch response.
  4. Book film replacement through Samsung service. Tell the service center that the issue is on the inner foldable screen and describe whether the film is bubbling, scratched, or lifting. The center can determine whether only the consumable film needs replacement or whether the panel also needs inspection.

When a “bubble” is not only a film problem

A raised area accompanied by a black or white line, abnormal brightness, a crack, flicker, or a touch dead zone should be treated as possible display damage. Do not keep folding the phone to see whether the mark changes. Repeated movement can enlarge damage around the crease, especially after impact or when foreign material has been trapped between the panels.

Restore touch response when taps or gestures fail

Touch problems can come from a temporary software fault, a case or protector, moisture, an accessibility setting, or an accessory. They can also indicate physical damage. Work through these checks in order so you do not mistake a removable interference problem for a broken panel.

  1. Restart the phone. A restart clears a temporary software fault that can make taps or gestures unreliable. After it boots, test the same area and the same gesture that failed.
  2. Remove third-party cases and screen accessories. Take off a case, cover, or non-factory protector and test again. An accessory can press against the fold or alter the way the digitizer detects a touch.
  3. Dry the device and your hands. Moisture can interfere with touch detection. Wipe away moisture and test only after the screen, hinge area, and your fingers are dry.
  4. Check whether an accessibility or touch setting is involved. Temporarily review settings that change touch behavior, then repeat the test without an accessory connected.
  5. If the factory inner film was removed, turn off Touch sensitivity. Open Settings > Display and disable Touch sensitivity. Samsung notes that removing the factory film can leave touch sensitivity mismatched; this setting is intended for use with a screen protector and can make an unprotected screen behave unexpectedly.
  6. Test more than one app and location. Check the home screen, keyboard, and a scrolling page. If only one app fails, the problem may be limited to that app; if the same strip fails everywhere, suspect the screen or its touch layer.
  7. Run Samsung Members diagnostics. Open Samsung Members and use its device diagnostics to test the screen. Record whether the failure is constant, intermittent, or limited to the crease before contacting support.

If touch remains unreliable after these steps, do not keep pressing harder or folding and unfolding the device to force a response. Persistent failure needs inspection by Samsung or an authorized service center, particularly when it is paired with a line, spot, crack, flicker, or recent impact.

Respond to black or white lines, spots, cracks, and flicker

A fine crease is expected; a new line or spot is not automatically normal. Samsung warns that impact can crack the Ultra Thin Glass and create a white line that appears while folding. Black or white dots, lines, abnormal brightness, cracks, flicker, or a region that no longer responds to touch can indicate damage to the UTG, display, or touch layer.

Immediate steps

  • Stop pressing on the affected area.
  • Do not repeatedly fold and unfold the phone to reproduce the symptom.
  • Keep cards, keys, pens, sand, metal particles, and other objects away from the gap between the panels.
  • Do not attempt to inject adhesive, lift the film, or push a crack flat.
  • Arrange professional inspection through Samsung or an authorized repair center.

Describe what changed and when: for example, whether the line appeared after a drop, pressure at the crease, or debris between the screens; whether it is visible when the phone is open, closed, or both; and whether brightness or touch is also affected. This information helps the technician distinguish a film replacement from a display or hinge repair.

Why a line that appears during folding matters

A line that becomes visible only as the hinge moves may still be associated with damage. The folding motion changes the stress on the UTG and display layers, so a crack or separation can reveal itself at a particular angle. Do not assume that a line is harmless simply because it disappears when the phone is fully open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle moisture and contamination correctly

Supported Galaxy foldable models have model-specific water-resistance guidance, but water resistance is not a promise that a damaged phone is safe. Follow the manual for the exact Fold or Flip generation. If the screen, hinge, or film is damaged, do not rely on the original water-resistance rating as protection against further problems.

Keep the hinge and screen gap free of sand, metal particles, cards, keys, pens, and other debris. Foreign material can concentrate pressure when the phone closes and may damage the film, UTG, hinge, or display. Before folding, check that nothing is resting on the inner screen. Never close the phone over an object to test whether it fits.

Decide whether you are seeing film wear or display damage

Clue More consistent with replaceable film More concerning for internal damage
Surface appearance Bubble, scratch, or lifting edge confined to the protective layer Crack, spreading mark, black or white spot, or abnormal brightness
Touch Touch works normally after restart, drying, and accessory removal A fixed dead strip or continuing failure across multiple apps
Timing Gradual wear after use without a single impact Started after a drop, pressure at the crease, or trapped debris
Change with folding Crease appearance varies naturally with angle Line appears with hinge movement or grows over time
Safe response Leave the film alone and request a service replacement Stop experimenting and request inspection of the display and hinge

These clues are not a do-it-yourself diagnosis. A service technician must determine whether the film, UTG, touch layer, or display assembly is affected.

Arrange the right repair

Use Samsung or an authorized service center for the inner film

Samsung’s guidance favors service-center replacement for the inner protective film. That is the appropriate route for bubbles, scratches, or lifting along the crease. Tell the center the exact model and generation, and specify that the problem is on the inner foldable screen rather than the outer cover screen.

Use professional inspection for persistent or spreading faults

Persistent touch failure, a spreading line, black areas, cracks, flicker, or suspected hinge or display damage should be inspected by Samsung or an authorized repair provider. Do not select a repair only because it advertises a generic screen protector; the technician must evaluate the underlying assembly.

Understand why a price cannot be stated in advance

Warranty coverage, repair pricing, and part availability vary by country, model, generation, inspection findings, and the service channel. Samsung must assess the device before confirming whether the work is a film replacement, a display repair, or a larger assembly repair. Ask for the written diagnosis and cost before authorizing paid work.

If you are buying a replacement film

A model-specific search such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Z Flip inner screen protector replacement can help you identify the type of part being discussed, but an online listing is not a do-it-yourself repair recommendation. Confirm all of the following before treating a listing as relevant:

  • The exact Fold or Flip generation, not merely the product family.
  • Whether the listing is for the inner folding screen or the outer cover screen.
  • That the material and installation method are approved for a foldable display.
  • That the listing does not require peeling the factory film or adding unapproved adhesive.

Because Samsung recommends service-center replacement for the inner film, the safest use of an online search is to identify terminology and the correct screen location, then confirm the repair path with Samsung.

Prevention checklist for every fold

  • Keep the factory inner film installed unless Samsung service removes and replaces it.
  • Fold the phone only through its normal hinge motion; never bend it backward or force the hinge.
  • Keep fingers, cards, keys, pens, sand, and metal powder out of the space between the panels.
  • Do not press directly on the crease, even if the crease looks uneven.
  • Avoid unapproved films, stickers, and adhesives on the main inner screen.
  • Keep the hinge and screen gap free of contamination.
  • After a drop or pressure event, inspect for lines, spots, cracks, abnormal brightness, and touch changes rather than repeatedly testing the fold.
  • At the first sign of a spreading mark, dead touch area, crack, or flicker, stop experimenting and contact Samsung or an authorized repair center.

A practical decision path

  1. Only a consistent crease: Treat it as normal flexible-display behavior and use the prevention checklist.
  2. Bubble, scratch, or lifting film with normal touch: Leave the film in place and arrange Samsung service replacement.
  3. Touch problem without visible damage: Restart, remove accessories, dry the phone and your hands, review touch-related settings, disable Touch sensitivity if the factory film was removed, and run Samsung Members diagnostics.
  4. Touch problem that remains, or any line, spot, crack, flicker, or abnormal brightness: Stop pressing and repeated folding, then arrange professional inspection.
  5. Any symptom after impact or trapped debris: Treat it as possible internal or hinge damage even if the mark is small, and seek authorized service.

The key distinction is whether the problem is limited to a consumable surface film or involves the flexible glass, display, touch layer, or hinge. The film can be replaced by service; internal damage cannot be made safe by smoothing, peeling, or applying another protector at home.
