Most Roku TV problems can be isolated without buying hardware or factory-resetting the television. First identify the scope: does the failure affect one title, one app, every Roku app, only an external HDMI player, or the TV’s audio output? Then work from reversible checks—input selection, cables, app tests, connection checks, restart and updates—to the more disruptive step of removing an app or resetting the device.
A Roku TV runs Roku software internally, while a separate Roku streaming player reaches the TV through an HDMI input. That distinction determines which checks apply. The instructions below also use current Roku menu labels, but labels and available ports can differ by model and Roku software version.

Start with a two-minute symptom check
Write down exactly what is failing before changing settings. A single title, a single app, all streaming apps, an antenna channel, and an external HDMI player point to different causes.
Recommended Free Tools
- One title only: the title may lack a requested audio track, have a provider-side problem, or be encoded in a way that exposes an app limitation.
- One app: check that service’s account status, update the app, and test another app before changing TV-wide settings.
- All Roku apps: check the network connection, restart the Roku device and router, and look for a device-wide audio or display issue.
- External player only: verify the TV input and HDMI path. A built-in Roku TV does not need an HDMI cable for its own Roku apps.
- Picture but no sound: isolate the program’s soundtrack, the app, and the TV or soundbar audio path separately.
Do not jump to a factory reset while this scope is unknown. Resetting removes saved preferences and account links, while a simple input change or app-specific fix may solve the problem.

Black screen or no picture
External Roku player: select the correct TV input first
With a separate Roku player, turn on the television and press its remote’s Input or Source button. Select the HDMI port where the Roku is connected. Roku identifies input selection as the “most common issue” in its black-screen guidance: Roku’s black-screen troubleshooting article.
After selecting an input, wait about 10 seconds before cycling to the next one. That gives the TV time to detect the player’s video signal. If the screen remains blank, continue with the physical connection checks below.
Check the entire HDMI and power path
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both the Roku player and the TV.
- Disconnect the Roku temporarily from a receiver or soundbar and connect it directly to the TV. This bypasses an intermediate device while you test.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Try another HDMI cable. Roku specifically recommends cable substitution when diagnosing a missing picture.
- Disconnect and reconnect the Roku player’s power cable, then allow it to start fully.
- If possible, connect the player to another television. A working picture there points toward the original TV, port, or cable; no picture on either set keeps the player and its power path in question.
These steps apply to an external player. If the problem is a Roku TV’s built-in home screen or an antenna input, skip the HDMI-player assumption and test another input or source using the TV’s own controls.
When only one source has no picture
If Roku menus appear but one HDMI source is black, the Roku software is not necessarily at fault. Recheck that source’s selected input, cable, and port. If every source—including the Roku home screen and antenna—lacks a picture, the fault is broader than one HDMI connection and may require model-specific TV support.
No sound, wrong language, or missing surround
One program has the wrong language or no expected track
When audio is wrong in only one show or movie, open that app’s playback sound menu while the program is playing. Roku describes pressing the Star button on the remote during playback, then selecting the available sound track or language. The exact choices are supplied by the title and service; a track cannot be selected if the provider did not include it.

No sound anywhere
Start another title in the same app, then try a different app. If the second app has sound, the first program or service is the likely scope. If all apps are silent, check the TV volume, mute state, connected headphones, soundbar, and receiver, then restart the Roku device. For ARC, soundbar, or Roku TV Ready equipment, use the equipment’s model-specific support instructions rather than assuming every setup has the same menu or cable behavior.
A title has no surround sound
Some titles provide stereo but not surround. Roku’s suggested test is Settings > Audio > Audio mode > Stereo. Play the title again and check whether its information lists a surround option. Choosing Stereo can restore audible playback when a device is waiting for an unsupported surround format, but it cannot create surround audio that the program does not offer. Menu names can vary with software version.

Separate a title problem from an app or network problem
- Play a different title in the same service.
- Open a different streaming app.
- Compare the results: one title suggests title or provider trouble; one app suggests that app, its account, or its service; several apps failing points toward the Roku device or network.
A provider outage, expired subscription, or sign-in problem can stop one service even when the rest of Roku works. Check the service’s own status and account prompts before changing Wi-Fi settings. Roku’s content troubleshooting guidance covers these scope tests: Issues playing shows and movies on your Roku device.
Run Roku’s connection test
On the Roku device, open Settings > Network > Check connection. You can also review the wireless details under Settings > Network > About. The result helps distinguish two different failures:
- Roku cannot reach the router: investigate Wi-Fi selection, signal strength, distance, interference, or the local wireless equipment.
- Roku reaches the router but the router has no internet: investigate the modem, internet service, or an outage rather than repeatedly changing Roku app settings.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi from the Network menu if prompted. If the signal is weak, move the Roku or router closer where practical and reduce obstacles or interference. Roku’s UK support page explains the connection test and signal labels: How to check the connection on your Roku streaming device.

Understand the bandwidth figures
Roku Support UK lists these typical requirements, last updated June 3, 2026. They are guidelines rather than a guarantee; individual services can set different requirements, and competing household traffic or weak Wi-Fi can still cause buffering.

| 4K Ultra HD | 25 Mbps or more |
The same page describes an Excellent signal as strong and stable, Good as reliable for most streaming, Fair as weak with possible pauses or lower quality, and Poor as very weak with likely buffering or disconnects. A speed that meets a typical figure at one moment can still fluctuate when several people stream, game, upload, or use video calls.
Restart the router and Roku
Roku’s playback instructions recommend restarting the router by unplugging it for 10 seconds, reconnecting it, and waiting for service to return, then restarting the Roku device. Its separate network-troubleshooting instructions describe a 30-second unplug and reconnect procedure. Follow the interval in the particular Roku support procedure you are using; neither interval is a promise that an outage or weak signal will be fixed.
For a Roku TV, a software restart is available at Settings > System > Power > System restart on menu versions that include Power. Some versions omit that intermediate menu. Roku also describes unplugging and reconnecting the device as a restart method. A restart does not erase accounts or installed apps.
Apps that will not load, crash, or show a black screen
Test the app against another title and service
Use the scope sequence above before reinstalling anything. If only one title fails, switch titles. If one service fails while others play, check the provider’s outage notices, account sign-in, subscription status, and any error message. If several apps fail, run Settings > Network > Check connection and restart Roku and the router.

Update, then remove and reinstall the app
- Highlight the affected app on the Roku home screen.
- Press the Star button to open its options.
- Choose the available update or system update option, then let Roku complete the update.
- Try the app again with a different title.
- If it still crashes or remains black, use the Star-button options to remove the app, restart Roku if prompted, and add the app again from the Streaming Store.
Removing an app can affect an active subscription billed through Roku. Confirm how the subscription is managed before deleting the channel so that reinstalling does not leave you unsure where billing or sign-in is controlled.
“Why can’t I open the Streaming Store on my Roku streaming device or Roku TV?”
If the Streaming Store itself will not open, treat it as a device or network symptom rather than an individual app failure. Check the network status and run Check connection, then restart Roku. If other Roku menus work but the store alone fails, test again after the connection is restored and check for a pending system update. Do not factory-reset solely because one store screen is unavailable.

Reconnect Wi-Fi and reduce competing use
From Settings > Network, select the wireless network again and enter its password carefully. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth streams while testing. A wired connection can be more stable than Wi-Fi where the exact Roku TV or player has an Ethernet port; confirm that your model actually includes one before planning a cable run.
Interpret the connection result before changing equipment
If Roku cannot reach the router, concentrate on local Wi-Fi placement, credentials, signal strength, and the router’s wireless function. If Roku reaches the router but internet access fails, restart the modem/router as directed by the relevant Roku procedure and check with the internet provider for an outage. Buying a new router is not the first diagnostic step; existing equipment, placement, and competing use should be checked first.

- Reconnect: reselect Wi-Fi, reseat HDMI and power cables, and bypass a receiver or soundbar while testing.
- Update: install available Roku system or app updates, then retry the failing title or feature.
- Remove and reinstall: reserve this for an app that still crashes, will not load, or shows a black screen after updates and network checks.
- Factory reset: use only after the reversible steps fail and you are prepared to set the device up again.
What a factory reset erases—and how to prepare
A factory reset removes personal preferences, unlinks the Roku device from its Roku account, removes installed apps and account information, and returns settings to their initial state. Guided setup and app sign-ins are required afterward. Roku’s current reset instructions are here: Factory reset your Roku TV, player, or projector.
Before selecting reset, have these items ready:
- Your Roku account email address and password.
- The Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Login details for each streaming service.
- Any parental-control PIN and the settings you will need to recreate.
Recovery Mode is Roku’s most invasive reset method. Use it only after the normal troubleshooting and reset instructions have failed, and follow the instructions for the exact TV, player, or projector model. A reset cannot repair a failed HDMI port, broken panel, missing provider stream, or an internet outage.
Decision guide by symptom and path
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| External Roku player shows a black TV screen | Select the correct HDMI input, wait about 10 seconds when cycling inputs, then reseat or replace the cable and test another port. |
| One title fails but other titles play | Try another title, inspect its audio or language menu, and check the service’s account or outage status. |
| One app fails while other apps work | Update the app, verify sign-in, then remove and reinstall it if necessary. |
| Several apps buffer or fail | Run Settings > Network > Check connection, review signal status, reduce competing use, and restart Roku and the router. |
| All apps are silent | Check mute, volume, headphones, soundbar/receiver connections, and test another app before changing audio mode. |
| One title lacks surround | Use Settings > Audio > Audio mode > Stereo and verify that the title offers surround. |
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Stop repeating the same software steps when the evidence points to hardware, a provider, or the internet service. A missing picture on every input after direct-cable and alternate-display tests, a damaged port, persistent audio failure with known-good apps and equipment, or a router that never regains internet access needs the responsible manufacturer, equipment provider, or internet service. Keep the exact symptom scope, connection-test result, TV/player model, and steps already attempted; that information makes model-specific support more productive.
