Most PS5 Pro picture problems are caused by one link in the HDMI chain, an output setting, or a display that cannot accept the selected signal. Work from the reversible checks first: verify the TV input and connections, connect the console directly, test another suitable cable and HDMI port, then use PS5 output settings and Safe Mode. This order distinguishes a setup limitation from a console fault without deleting data.
The procedures below apply PlayStation’s current PS5 guidance to the Pro. Menus, firmware behavior and display compatibility can change; the official support pages used here were accessed October 13, 2026.

Start with a controlled diagnosis
Change one variable at a time and note what happened. A receiver, sound bar, capture device, HDMI switch, wall plate or adapter can alter the signal even when the console and television each support the desired mode. PlayStation’s picture-and-sound guidance recommends removing those intermediaries while testing, checking display firmware and trying another port or cable.
- Identify the symptom: completely blank screen, intermittent signal, flicker, 1080p fallback, missing HDR/VRR, an unexpectedly soft PS4 game image, or a general system slowdown.
- Record the baseline: the HDMI input, cable, resolution, refresh rate and whether an AVR, sound bar or capture device is in the path.
- Use a direct connection for diagnosis: console HDMI OUT straight to the display’s HDMI input. Restore the normal equipment chain only after the direct test works.
Use the official PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting guide for the connection, firmware and repair checks described here.

Fix a PS5 Pro with no picture or an intermittent signal
1. Confirm power, input and seating
- Turn on both the PS5 Pro and the display.
- Use the display remote to select the exact HDMI input where the console is connected. Do not rely on automatic input switching during diagnosis.
- Unplug and firmly reseat both HDMI plugs. Inspect for a loose fit, then try another HDMI input on the display.
A surprising number of “black screen” reports are an incorrect input or a connector that is not fully seated. If another port works, the original port or its configuration is the likely limiting point.
2. Remove intermediary equipment
Disconnect the receiver, sound bar, home-theater processor, HDMI switch, capture card and any adapter. Connect the console directly to the display. If the direct path restores the image, update the intermediary’s firmware and check whether that device supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and copy-protection mode you are selecting. Reintroduce one device at a time so the failing link is identifiable.
3. Test a known-good cable
Try the HDMI cable included with the console first. PlayStation recommends it for high-performance features, while older cables can still be used for lower-bandwidth modes. If the included cable is unavailable or suspected, use a known-good Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120 Hz. A cable swap is a diagnostic test, not proof that every working setup needs a new cable.

4. Update the display
Install the television or monitor’s current firmware and consult its manual for any HDMI mode, enhanced-bandwidth or deep-color setting required for high-resolution input. Manufacturers use different names for these options, so the display manual is the authority for the exact label.
5. Recover a blank screen through Safe Mode
If the display remains blank, use the PS5 Safe Mode video recovery path:

- Turn the console off by holding the power button for three seconds.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Change Video Output, then choose Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode as appropriate.
These Safe Mode choices let the console start with a more compatible signal. The complete procedure and additional options are in PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide. If the screen is still blank after a direct connection, a known-good cable and Safe Mode video changes, use PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly changing settings.
Restore 4K at 120 Hz instead of 1080p or 60 Hz
4K/120 Hz is a chain requirement, not a console-only switch. The display must accept 4K at 120 Hz, the selected HDMI input must provide the needed bandwidth, the TV may require an enhanced HDMI setting, the cable must be suitable, and the game must support a 120 Hz mode. PlayStation describes 120 Hz output as dependent on compatible games and TVs or monitors, so no setting can guarantee it in every title.
Verify each requirement
| Checkpoint | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Display capability | The TV or monitor explicitly supports 4K at 120 Hz and has current firmware. | A 120 Hz panel that accepts only 1080p at that rate cannot produce 4K/120. |
| HDMI input | Use the display port specified for 4K/120 and enable its enhanced, high-bandwidth or equivalent mode if the manual requires it. | Some displays provide full bandwidth on only one or two inputs. |
| Signal path | Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display while testing. | Receivers, switches and capture devices can cap resolution or refresh rate. |
| Cable | Use the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. | A cable that works at 4K/60 may fail when bandwidth increases. |
| Console settings | Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic while diagnosing. | These are PlayStation’s listed baseline settings for the 4K/120 check. |
| Game support | Check the game’s own graphics or performance options and its documented 120 Hz support. | The console cannot force a game that has no 120 Hz mode to render at 120 Hz. |
After changing a TV-side setting, power-cycle the display and console so the HDMI handshake starts again. In the Video Output screen, review the connected device’s reported resolution and feature details. If the display still falls back to 1080p/120 Hz, test the same console and cable on another confirmed 4K/120 display, or test another 4K/120 source on the original input. That cross-test separates a display-port limitation from a console-side issue.
PlayStation’s resolution requirements, 1440p checks, HDR, VRR, transfer-rate controls and 4K/120 checklist are documented in How to change PS5 console resolution.
Stop a flickering PS5 Pro image
Reduce transfer rate as a diagnostic
For flicker that appears at high bandwidth, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1. If the problem remains, try -2. PlayStation says limiting the 4K transfer rate may improve picture quality.

| Video Transfer Rate choice | Use during diagnosis | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Normal baseline before limiting output. | Retains the broadest set of output modes but may not eliminate a marginal high-bandwidth link. |
| -1 | First reduced-rate test for flicker. | Limits 4K/120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz color formats. |
| -2 | Second reduced-rate test if -1 does not help. | Also limits 4K/120 Hz and a different set of 4K 50/60 Hz color formats; available formats are more constrained than Automatic. |
These values are compatibility controls, not a universal picture-quality upgrade. If -1 or -2 stops the flicker, the result points to a bandwidth, cable, port or intermediary problem. Restore Automatic after identifying and fixing that link if the full feature set is required.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test 120 Hz separately
If flicker begins only when 120 Hz is active, temporarily turn off 120 Hz Output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. A stable 60 Hz image indicates that the problem is tied to the high-refresh mode or its signal path rather than the panel’s basic input. Recheck the display port, firmware and cable before turning 120 Hz back on.
Exclude handshake causes
Use a direct console-to-display connection, another HDMI port and the included cable. Disable any receiver or capture device for the test. Also check whether the display’s enhanced HDMI mode is enabled; a port configured for standard bandwidth can produce intermittent sync when the console requests a higher mode.
Set realistic HDR, VRR and ALLM behavior
The PS5 Pro’s Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output page reports what the connected HDMI device advertises for resolution, VRR and HDR. Treat those reported capabilities as the starting point, not a promise that every game will use every feature.
| Feature or option | What it does | Important limitation or fix |
|---|---|---|
| VRR | Synchronizes refresh timing on a compatible display and game. | Results vary by TV. If Apply to Unsupported Games causes visual or gameplay problems, turn that option off. |
| HDR: Always On | Outputs non-HDR content as HDR. | It converts SDR content instead of leaving it in its native SDR presentation. |
| HDR: On When Supported | Uses HDR when the content supports it and leaves non-HDR content in SDR. | This is the predictable choice when SDR titles look over-bright or incorrectly mapped under Always On. |
| ALLM | Lets a compatible display switch to a low-latency mode. | Current system software is required. VRR can still trigger low-latency behavior even when ALLM is set off; turn off VRR as well if ALLM must be fully disabled. |
When diagnosing an unexpected picture, first record the current HDR and VRR state, then change only one option. A game that supports VRR may behave differently from a video app, and a display can advertise a feature while applying its own picture-processing limits.

Improve a PS4 game that looks unenhanced on PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro model group covered by Sony’s CFI-7000 guidance includes Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. If a compatible PS4 title is not showing the expected enhancement, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and confirm that the option is enabled.
- The connected screen must support 4K or 1440p for this enhancement setting.
- The setting applies to supported PS4 software; it does not turn every title into a native PS5 Pro build.
- If gameplay behaves unexpectedly after enabling it, turn the option off. Sony explicitly recommends that fallback for anomalous behavior.
Check the display’s reported resolution after changing the option. If the TV supports only 1080p, the enhancement cannot meet the 4K/1440p requirement even though the console itself is a Pro model.
See the PS5 Pro troubleshooting page for the CFI-7000 setting and its display requirement.

Use Safe Mode cache clearing for system-level problems
When menus, system features or overall console performance become abnormal, start Safe Mode using the power-button sequence described earlier, connect the controller by USB and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Choose Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops. Cache clearing removes temporary system data; it is not a guaranteed fix for a game’s own frame-rate behavior.
When to rebuild the database
Rebuild Database scans the internal drive and creates a new content database. It can help when system content indexing is inconsistent, but it does not add a game’s missing performance mode and does not replace a hardware repair. Allow the scan to finish without powering off the console.

Avoid destructive recovery as a first step
Safe Mode also offers update and reset functions. Do not jump to reset or reinstall options for a display symptom: resetting or reinstalling system software deletes user data. Back up important saves and follow PlayStation’s support instructions before using any destructive option. Game-specific frame-rate drops are not diagnosed by the general Safe Mode guidance, so investigate the game’s patches, graphics modes and display behavior separately rather than promising that cache clearing will fix one title.
Understand PS5 Pro 8K limits
8K output has stricter requirements than ordinary 4K troubleshooting. Sony says the 8K setting is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and only when the display supports 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression (DSC).
| 8K condition | Practical consequence |
|---|---|
| Display supports 8K at 60 Hz with DSC | Required before the 8K output option can operate as intended. |
| VRR in 8K mode | Disabled. |
| Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting and Remote Play | Some simultaneous combinations are unavailable or constrained in 8K mode. |
| PlayStation VR2 connected while the TV is set to 8K | The headset does not display video. |
| Game and system support | Select games can support 8K; system and media apps are listed up to 4K. |
Therefore, an 8K-capable television does not mean that every game, menu or media app will render at 8K. If you need VRR, PlayStation VR2 video or the affected sharing features, switch the console back to a supported lower-resolution output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the right setup change instead of guessing
When comparing a replacement display, cable or connection arrangement, evaluate the whole path rather than one headline specification.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Decision use |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and refresh rate | Does the display accept the target combination, such as 2160p at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz with DSC? | Rejects displays that advertise a high refresh rate only at a lower resolution. |
| HDMI input capability | Which physical port supports the required bandwidth, and is an enhanced mode enabled? | Directs the console to the correct input. |
| Cable rating | Is the cable included with the console or rated Ultra High-Speed for 4K/120 Hz? | Identifies a sensible cable test without assuming a purchase is necessary. |
| Intermediary equipment | Does a receiver, sound bar, switch or capture device pass the chosen signal? | Supports a direct-connection test before replacing hardware. |
| HDR, VRR and ALLM | Does the display and the game support the feature, and do their settings agree? | Prevents treating a feature advertisement as universal game behavior. |
| Game support | Does the specific title provide a 120 Hz, VRR, HDR or Pro-enhanced mode? | Separates console capability from software capability. |
This framework is more reliable than buying a cable or display immediately. First prove which link fails, then replace only that link if necessary.
When the problem needs official service
Use PlayStation Repairs after the direct-connection test, alternate cable and port, display firmware check and Safe Mode video recovery all fail. Service is especially appropriate when the console produces no image on multiple known-good displays, the HDMI connector is physically damaged, or the problem persists across every cable and input while other sources work normally. Keep notes of the exact display, port, cable, output mode and Safe Mode result; those details make a repair diagnosis faster.
For changing firmware behavior and model-specific instructions, consult the linked resolution guide, picture and sound guide, Safe Mode guide and PS5 Pro troubleshooting page. These settings and compatibility rules may be revised as console and display firmware changes.
