Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMost problems after a Windows-to-Linux move have a predictable cause: a Windows-only installer, a different filesystem layout, hardware that needs distribution-specific support, an unsafe software source, or an installation choice that does not match the computer’s storage configuration. The safest fix is to identify your Linux distribution and version, your exact device model, and the complete error message before changing a driver, partition, or system setting.
This guide uses Ubuntu documentation for menu names and installer behavior where stated. Other Linux distributions may use different tools, package names, and menus.

Start with a controlled diagnosis
Do not begin by downloading a random driver or copying a command from a forum. Record the information that determines which fix is appropriate.
Write down the four details that matter
- Distribution and release: for example, Ubuntu Desktop and its release number. “Linux” is a family of distributions, not one operating system with one driver system.
- Computer and component model: record the PC model, and the exact model of the wireless adapter, printer, scanner, graphics adapter, or other device that fails.
- What happened: describe the action that failed, such as installing an application, joining a network, printing, or starting the installer.
- The exact error: copy the complete message, including any error code. “It does not work” is not enough to distinguish a missing driver from a disabled device, a permissions problem, or an unsupported application.
Use the least risky test first
- Check that the device is powered on, physically connected, and enabled. For wireless hardware, verify that airplane mode or a hardware switch has not disabled it.
- Restart once after installation or a hardware change. This can reveal whether the problem is a one-time initialization failure, but it will not install a missing driver.
- If you have not installed Linux yet, boot a current Ubuntu Desktop USB and choose the live “Try Ubuntu” session. Test Wi-Fi, sound, Bluetooth, graphics, printers, scanners, external displays, and any other device you need before changing the internal disk.
- Use your distribution’s current documentation for the exact release and hardware. A fix written for another release can point to a different menu or package.
- Back up personal files before changing partitions, storage settings, or system-wide software sources.
A USB stick is useful for the live test and for keeping a separate copy of personal files. It is preparation, not a guaranteed cure for an incompatible application or a missing hardware driver.

A Windows application will not install
Why an .exe file does not work
An .exe is a Windows software installer. Downloading it on Linux does not turn it into a Linux application, and double-clicking it is not the normal installation method. Linux applications are normally supplied in formats supported by the distribution and are installed through its software tools or repositories.
Find a supported Linux version
- Open the distribution’s software center and search for the application’s name or for the function you need.
- Check the application publisher’s official download page for a Linux build or a supported cross-platform release.
- Prefer the distribution’s official repository when the application is available there. Repository packages are integrated with the release’s update and dependency system.
- Read the publisher’s requirements for your distribution and release before installing. A package for a different release may not be compatible.
Ubuntu’s “SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows” guidance explains the basic distinction between Windows programs and Linux software. Ubuntu’s desktop documentation also describes installing software from Ubuntu and from third-party sources. Availability is application-specific: some Windows programs have Linux versions, some have functional alternatives, and some have no supported Linux route.
When a compatibility route is the only option
Some applications can run through an application-specific compatibility solution, but success depends on the program, its version, graphics requirements, copy-protection system, plugins, and online services. Do not assume that a compatibility layer will run every Windows installer or provide every feature. Verify the exact application and workflow in its current documentation before relying on it.
Choose by workflow, not by brand name
| Option | Check first | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Linux build of the same application | Required features, supported distribution release, and file format compatibility | Usually the smallest change, but feature parity may differ |
| Linux replacement | Whether it opens and saves the files used by you and your collaborators | May require learning a new interface or changing a shared workflow |
| Application-specific compatibility route | Exact program version, plugins, hardware acceleration, and online-service requirements | Can require extra setup and may break after an application or system update |
| Keep Windows for that workflow | Available disk space, backup status, and whether the computer supports the chosen installation layout | Requires maintaining two operating systems and selecting the correct one at startup |
The correct choice depends on the exact application. Without its name and version, no one can responsibly promise that a particular installer or replacement will work.

Your C: drive or Documents folder seems to be missing
Linux does not use Windows drive letters
Linux normally presents storage as one filesystem tree rather than assigning everyday locations letters such as C: and D:. On Ubuntu, start with your user’s Home folder. It is the natural location for personal documents, downloads, pictures, music, and application settings.
The names and arrangement are different from Windows, but your files are not automatically gone merely because there is no C: icon. Use the file manager’s Home location and its search function to locate files you copied during migration.
Open removable media through the desktop
Connect a USB drive, memory card, or external disk and look for it in the file manager’s sidebar. Ubuntu’s desktop normally makes removable media available through the graphical interface. Eject it from the file manager before unplugging it so pending writes can finish.
Accessing a Windows NTFS partition
If Windows remains installed, its partition may use NTFS and may be accessible from Linux. Whether it appears and can be mounted depends on the installation layout and the disk’s state. Do not delete, reformat, or manually mount a partition just because its name is unfamiliar. First identify the partition and confirm that a backup exists.

A Windows partition that was left in a hibernated or otherwise inconsistent state can require attention in Windows before Linux can safely use it. If you are not certain which partition contains your data, stop and use the current Ubuntu storage and installation guidance rather than experimenting.
Wi-Fi, printers, sound, Bluetooth, or graphics are not working
Hardware support varies by distribution release and device model. Ubuntu’s hardware documentation separates guidance for wireless networking, printers, sound, Bluetooth, screens, and power; use the section matching the failing component instead of installing a generic “Linux driver pack.”
Wi-Fi: establish whether the adapter is recognized
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled in the desktop controls and that any physical wireless switch is on.
- Restart the access point and reconnect from the network menu. Test another network if one is available; this distinguishes a computer problem from a network-specific problem.
- Identify the wireless adapter’s exact make and model. If the adapter is not recognized at all, a password change will not fix it.
- Follow Ubuntu’s current wireless connection troubleshooter. Its first diagnostic branch asks whether the adapter was recognized and then directs you toward device- and distribution-specific driver steps.
- If the adapter works in a live Ubuntu session but not in the installed system, compare the installed release, updates, and enabled software sources before changing hardware settings.
Do not install a driver package merely because its name contains your adapter vendor. The appropriate package and procedure can change with the Ubuntu release and with the chipset inside a product sold under the same model family.

Printers and scanners
- Turn the printer or scanner on and reconnect its USB cable, or verify that it is on the same network as the computer.
- Check the desktop’s printer settings and look for the device by its exact model name.
- For a network device, confirm its address and network connection before troubleshooting print software.
- Check the manufacturer’s Linux support information and Ubuntu’s current hardware guidance. Some devices work with built-in support; others need a model-specific package.
- Test scanning and printing separately. A printer can be detected for printing while its scanner function needs different support.
Testing a printer and scanner from the live session before installation is especially useful because it reveals compatibility without altering the internal disk.

- For Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth, put the accessory into pairing mode, remove a stale pairing, and try pairing again.
- Test a second headset or speaker when possible. This separates a computer configuration issue from a failing accessory.
- Record the computer and adapter model if the device is not listed at all, then use the Ubuntu hardware guidance for the matching component.
Graphics and external displays
- Confirm the display cable, input selection, and monitor power.
- Open the display settings and check whether the monitor is detected. Try reconnecting the cable after the desktop has loaded.
- Record the exact graphics adapter and Ubuntu release before selecting a driver. Graphics packages are release- and hardware-dependent.
- If the desktop is unstable or the display is blank, return to a live-session test or the distribution’s recovery instructions instead of repeatedly installing unrelated drivers.
Test hardware before committing to an installation
Ubuntu’s “Try Ubuntu before you install it” material recommends using a USB session to experience the desktop and test hardware. The switching guidance specifically calls out wireless adapters, printers, scanners, and modems. A live test cannot prove that every future update will behave identically, but it can expose a basic incompatibility before the installer changes your disk.
An installer asks for sudo or a new software repository
What sudo means
sudo runs a command with administrative privileges. A command entered after it can change system files, install software, alter users, or modify networking. Ubuntu’s command-line guidance advises understanding a command before running it, especially when it was copied from an unverified page.
Use official repositories as the default
- Search the distribution’s official software tools first.
- Read the package description and confirm that it is the application you intend to install.
- Keep normal updates enabled so security fixes arrive through the distribution’s update mechanism.
- If the package is not available, go to the project’s official download source and follow instructions written for your distribution and release.
External repositories can be legitimate, but they add another party that can publish packages and another source of compatibility changes. Do not add a repository solely because a search result gives you a one-line command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before running a downloaded command
- Confirm the website is the project’s official source and that the instructions match your distribution release.
- Read every command, including pipes, downloads, redirects, and commands that begin with
sudo. - Understand what files or repositories it will change and how you would remove them.
- Do not paste a command that you cannot explain into a terminal with administrative privileges.
If you already ran an unfamiliar command, stop installing more software until you know what it changed. Record the command and its terminal output, then consult the project’s official documentation or a knowledgeable support channel. Avoid “fixing” an uncertain change with another random script.

The Ubuntu installer cannot see the disk or will not proceed
Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST)
Ubuntu’s current Desktop installation guide warns that some PCs use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), which Ubuntu does not support in the described installation scenario. When RST is enabled, the installer may refuse to continue or may not show the expected disk. This is a storage-configuration issue, not proof that the disk has failed.
Do not disable or reconfigure RST from memory. Stop at the installer warning, read the current Ubuntu instructions for your exact computer, and verify that Windows can still start and that your personal files are backed up before changing the storage mode. A storage-mode change can affect the existing Windows installation.
Understand the three installer layouts
| Installer choice | What it does | Use it only when |
|---|---|---|
| Erase disk and install Ubuntu | Uses the selected disk for Ubuntu and removes the existing layout on that disk | You have a verified backup and intentionally want to remove the existing operating system and data from that disk |
| Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system | Retains an existing operating system and creates space for Ubuntu | You have enough usable disk space, understand the startup choice, and have a verified backup |
| Manual partitioning | Lets you specify partitions and mount points yourself | You understand the current disk layout and accept the risk of selecting or formatting the wrong partition |
The installer’s labels and available options can vary by release and disk state. No single layout is safest for every reader. If a choice is unclear, cancel rather than guessing.
Prepare before changing partitions
- Copy personal files to separate removable storage and verify that the copies open.
- Record which operating system and partitions you intend to keep.
- Confirm that the computer can boot from the Ubuntu USB and that essential hardware works in the live session.
- Read the current Ubuntu Desktop installation instructions for the computer’s storage configuration, including any RST warning.
- Only then choose erase, alongside, or manual installation.
You still need Windows for one application or workflow
Keeping Windows is a valid transition strategy when an essential application, plugin, service, or hardware workflow has no dependable Linux equivalent. Ubuntu’s switching guidance describes dual boot, and the current installer documents installing Ubuntu alongside an existing operating system.
Compare the real requirements
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the exact Linux application support every required feature? | A Linux build may omit a plugin, codec, macro system, or service used by your workflow. |
| Can collaborators open the files? | A replacement that changes file formats can create problems even if it works locally. |
| How much maintenance can you accept? | Dual boot requires updates and backups for two operating systems; a compatibility route can require application-specific maintenance. |
| Does the workflow depend on unsupported hardware or services? | Software choice cannot compensate for a device that Linux does not detect or a service that requires Windows. |
| Can the disk safely support the layout? | Available space, RST, encryption, and the current partition map affect whether alongside installation is appropriate. |
Use dual boot deliberately
- Back up files from Windows and Linux separately.
- Test Ubuntu hardware support from a live USB.
- Confirm that the Windows application remains usable and that you know which files belong to each system.
- Use the installer’s alongside option only after checking the disk and current instructions.
- At startup, select the operating system that contains the workflow you need. Keep both systems updated and backed up.
Dual boot does not solve a missing Linux driver, and partitioning is not risk-free. It is an availability choice for a workflow, not a substitute for hardware testing or backup preparation.
When the exact fix is not yet known
Unspecified hardware and applications cannot be diagnosed reliably from the phrase “Linux is not working.” Gather a compact support report instead of trying unrelated fixes.
Include this information
- Distribution name and release number.
- Computer model and the exact failing component model.
- Whether the problem occurs in the installed system, the live USB session, or both.
- What worked in Windows, what changed during installation, and the first point at which the failure appeared.
- The complete on-screen error and any relevant terminal output.
- Whether the disk uses encryption, dual boot, or a storage mode such as Intel RST.
Use a stop condition
Stop and seek distribution-specific help if a proposed fix asks you to format a partition, disable a storage feature, install a package from an unknown repository, or run a command with sudo that you do not understand. A slower diagnosis protects data and usually produces a more accurate fix than repeated trial and error.

A practical order of operations
- Identify: record the distribution, release, device model, and exact error.
- Separate software from hardware: decide whether the failure is an application install, a missing file, a device detection problem, a repository decision, or an installer/storage problem.
- Test safely: use the live Ubuntu session when available, and test essential peripherals before installation.
- Prefer supported sources: use official repositories and the project’s official instructions; treat downloaded scripts and external repositories as higher-risk changes.
- Protect data: back up and verify personal files before partitioning or changing storage configuration.
- Escalate with details: provide the complete error and model information when the distribution’s current documentation does not cover the case.
