This order separates problems you can fix on your device from settings only a teacher, IT desk, or platform administrator can change.
Canvas, Google Classroom, Moodle, and district learning systems can use different URLs, account rules, app requirements, and support processes. A personal account may work normally elsewhere and still be unable to enter a school course. The sections below match the most common symptoms and identify the point at which local troubleshooting should stop.

Start with the institution’s login route
Use the exact URL supplied by the school
Do not begin with a generic search result or a bookmarked address from a previous term. Schools and universities can run separate Canvas instances, Moodle sites, Google Workspace domains, or district portals. Canvas guidance says the institution URL can differ, and the University of Cambridge places checking the login address among its first steps. Open the link in the course email, student portal, handbook, or official IT page. If you do not know which address is current, ask the institution’s IT department rather than guessing.

An institution may route sign-in through a custom subdomain, a district portal, or a single sign-on button. Entering credentials at the wrong address can produce a rejected password even when the password is correct.

Confirm which identity the course expects
Check whether the course uses a school-managed, district, university, employer, or personal account. Google Classroom recognizes school, personal, and organization accounts; the class may be visible only from the one invited by the teacher. Canvas also ties a username and password to a particular Canvas URL. In LearnPlatform, a district may offer single sign-on (SSO) or a separate manual login, and a browser with several signed-in profiles can select the wrong identity.
Before retrying, sign out of unrelated Google or district profiles, or open a private window and sign in only with the assigned account. Do not create a second account to work around an access error: duplicate identities can leave you outside the class roster or send work to the wrong account.
Fix password, SSO, and account-activation problems
Use “Forgot password” only through an approved route
Select the platform’s Forgot password option only when the institution permits self-service resets. Canvas says its reset email can take up to 30 minutes, so check the correct inbox and allow that interval before requesting repeated messages. Look in spam or quarantine folders, but do not forward reset links to anyone.
If the reset form says the account is unknown, first return to the institution URL and verify the username format. A reset on the wrong Canvas instance or consumer Google account will not change the school credential.
Recognize managed Google Workspace accounts
For a school-managed Google Workspace for Education account, Google’s student guidance says the learner should ask the teacher to have an administrator reset the password. The student may not have permission to change a managed credential. Give the teacher the exact account address and error text; do not substitute a personal Gmail address unless the class instructions explicitly allow it.

Escalate SSO failures to the district
SSO can fail even when the learning platform itself is operating. LearnPlatform’s guidance identifies district SSO and manual login as separate paths; if several district users suddenly fail through SSO, it points to a possible SAML certificate problem and directs users to support. That is an administrator-side configuration issue, not something a learner can repair by clearing a password.
New learners may also need activation. Google Classroom notes that a school administrator may have to activate access before a student can join. If classmates can enter but a newly created account cannot, ask the teacher or administrator to verify activation and the account’s organization membership.

Repair browser session and compatibility issues
Test in a private or incognito window
Open the institution URL in a private or incognito window and try the same account. This creates a clean session without most existing cookies, cached files, and extensions. If the private window works, the service and account are probably reachable; the normal browser profile is retaining a stale login or conflicting session.
Clear only the affected site’s data first
For a login loop, blank page, broken formatting, or a page that never finishes loading, clear cookies and cached data for the learning site, then close and reopen the browser. A targeted deletion is preferable to wiping every site. Clearing cookies can sign you out of banking, email, and other services, so keep your passwords or recovery methods available before proceeding.
After clearing the site data, revisit the official institution URL, select the required SSO option, and authenticate again. If the problem returns only when a browser extension is enabled, temporarily disable extensions for that site and report the conflicting extension to your IT desk.

Check supported-browser requirements
Update the browser to a version supported by the platform and institution. Canvas guidance specifically includes browser requirements among its login checks. An old browser can display an incomplete page, reject modern authentication, or fail to load assignment controls even though a newer browser on the same computer works. Test one current browser before changing operating-system settings or installing extra software.
Rule out the network before blaming the platform
Confirm that the connection is active and stable
Open another reliable website and, if possible, move closer to the access point or reconnect to the existing network. Moodle lists interruptions or slow internet as possible contributors to app and site failures. A brief connection drop can interrupt a sign-in redirect or leave an assignment upload appearing frozen.
Compare an already-available second network
If the learning site works on a phone connection or another trusted network but not on the current one, the first network may be filtering the site. Cambridge warns that some public networks block websites and suggests trying another network. This comparison is diagnostic; it is not a reason to buy a router, hotspot, VPN, or new computer.
Record which network succeeds and which fails. A school, library, hotel, or workplace administrator may need to allow the institution’s domain or authentication service. Do not attempt to bypass a network policy without permission.
When the mobile app cannot find or connect to a site
Verify that the institution allows app access
Moodle’s app connects only to sites configured to allow it and running a supported Moodle version. In the app, enter the school’s Moodle site address, not a generic Moodle home page, and use the usual institutional credentials. If the site is not found, ask the Moodle administrator whether mobile access is enabled and whether the site meets the app’s support requirements.

Interpret common Moodle app messages
A message about site maintenance, an invalid token, or an unavailable web service indicates a site configuration or server condition. Moodle directs learners to contact the school or learning organization for these errors. Reinstalling the app will not repair a disabled web service or an institution-wide maintenance window.
For a comparison, open the same Moodle address in the mobile browser. If the browser also fails, continue with the institution URL, account, network, and status checks. If the browser works but the app fails, provide the administrator with the app version, device type, site address, and exact message.
When you can sign in but cannot join, open, or submit
Class-code and invitation failures in Google Classroom
A rejected class code commonly results from a mistyped code or the wrong signed-in account. Re-enter the code exactly as supplied, switch to the school account, and confirm that the teacher has invited that identity. Google Classroom also allows domain restrictions and class-invitation limits; a teacher or administrator must change those settings.
If the class does not appear after a successful sign-in, ask the teacher to verify the roster and organization domain rather than repeatedly trying different codes. This is an enrollment or permission problem, not a browser problem.

Assignment attachment and storage errors
Google’s teacher troubleshooting guidance notes that a full teacher Google Drive can prevent students from turning in work. An attachment can also fail because of the file path or permission on the source document. Follow the platform’s alternate workflow: upload the file to the Class Drive when directed, or make a separate copy and attach that copy. Keep the original file unchanged until the teacher confirms receipt.
Separate course access from course activity
If the dashboard opens but a specific course, quiz, or submission control is missing, capture the course name and activity title. The teacher or administrator may need to publish the item, enroll you, adjust a due-date permission, or repair a document share. Do not infer that the entire learning platform is down from one missing assignment.

Compare reports from other learners
Ask one classmate whether the same URL and activity work for them. Several people failing at the same time points toward an institution, network, or provider incident; one person failing points more often toward account, browser, or enrollment state. Also check the school’s announcements and help-desk notices.
Use the official status page carefully
Check the provider’s official status page for a component incident, but treat the result as provider- and time-specific. Instructure’s status page showed its listed systems operational with no incident reported on October 13, 2026. That snapshot does not prove that every school’s Canvas instance, local identity provider, or network was healthy. The same history lists a Canvas Jobs slowdown on September 30, 2026 as resolved; a resolved incident explains a past delay, not a current login failure.
If the status page reports an incident, save the incident title and start time, follow the institution’s instructions, and avoid repeated password resets while the service recovers. If it reports normal operation but your whole class is blocked, contact the institution because a local SSO, roster, or network service may be affected.
Choose the next check by symptom

Follow a controlled recovery sequence
Use this sequence once, recording the result after each step. Stopping when the symptom changes prevents you from making unrelated account or browser changes.
- Open the official institution link. Do not use a guessed or generic address.
- Check the signed-in identity. Select the school, district, university, or organization account assigned to the course.
- Read the exact error. Distinguish a rejected credential from a missing class, an upload error, or a server message.
- Apply the permitted credential path. Use Forgot password if self-service is enabled; otherwise contact the teacher, administrator, or help desk.
- Test a private window. If it succeeds, clear the affected site’s cookies and cache in the normal browser.
- Retry with a supported browser. Update it if the platform’s compatibility guidance requires a newer version.
- Compare the connection. Use another already-available, trusted network to identify filtering or instability.
- Check the app or course configuration. For Moodle, verify that the site permits app access; for Google Classroom, verify the roster, domain, class code, and submission permissions.
- Check status and notices. Look for a provider incident or institution maintenance message before repeating attempts.
What to give the teacher or help desk
A precise report shortens the handoff. Include:
- The institution URL or app site address, without sharing your password.
- The account type and username format you used; redact the password and any recovery codes.
- The exact error text, including whether it appeared before or after sign-in.
- The date and time, including your time zone if the institution is remote.
- Your device, operating system, browser or app name, and version when known.
- The network where it failed and whether an already-available alternate network worked.
- The steps already tried, such as a private-window test, targeted cookie clearing, or an approved password reset.
- For a course problem, the class name, assignment title, class code, and a screenshot with personal data and tokens obscured.
Send this information through the school’s official support channel. Administrators can verify account activation, SSO certificates, enrollment, domain restrictions, app permissions, storage, and server logs—settings that are outside a learner’s browser.

Prevent the same access problem next term
- Bookmark the institution’s official portal after confirming it with the school, and update the bookmark when the institution announces a URL change.
- Keep the assigned account separate from personal or work profiles, especially on shared browsers.
- Maintain a recovery method approved by the institution and know whether password resets are self-service or administrator-controlled.
- Install browser and app updates before a major assignment deadline, then test the course site while access is still available.
- Save the help-desk contact and the course teacher’s preferred escalation route.
- For important submissions, keep the original file and a separate copy so an attachment or permission error does not destroy your work.
