How to Fix Common PC Battle Royale Performance Problems

Fix battle-royale problems by identifying the symptom first, then testing the matching subsystem. Low FPS points to hardware, drivers, settings, or background load; intermittent stutter can involve frame pacing, graphics APIs, storage, or memory; artifacts and overheating require temperature and hardware checks; crashes need files, drivers, and stability checks; high ping, packet loss, and rubberbanding are network problems rather than graphics problems.

Use the sequence below, change one factor at a time, and retest the same map or match conditions. The menus differ between Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, so do not apply one game’s procedure blindly to another.

Identify the problem before changing settings

Record when the fault occurs and what you can measure. Constantly low frame rates, a hitch every few seconds, a black screen after a driver update, and a character snapping backward have different likely causes.

Symptom Useful signal Most relevant subsystem
Low FPS or sudden drops FPS counter, GPU/CPU load, graphics settings Hardware capability, drivers, power mode, background load
Stutter or hitching Frame-time graph, timing and reproducibility API/driver interaction, memory, storage, asset streaming
Artifacts or tearing Persistent colored pixels, duplicated frames, temperature Display synchronization, GPU load, heat, hardware
Crash or freeze Error text, crash dump, start date, affected game Files, drivers, overclock stability, launcher or Windows
Rubberbanding, high ping, packet loss Latency and packet-loss display Data-center route, Wi-Fi, router, background network use
Performance worsening after long sessions Temperature over time and fan behavior Airflow, dust, thermal limits

Test the same scene or match type after each change. If every game is affected, suspect the PC or network. If only one title is affected, start with that game’s files, patch notes, requirements, and support instructions.

Build a short test record

Before changing anything, note the game, map or mode, resolution, graphics API, approximate FPS, whether the issue is constant, and how long the session had been running. For a network fault, record latency and packet loss from the in-game display. For a crash, save the exact message and time. This turns “it feels bad” into a comparison you can repeat.

Use one controlled test whenever possible: the same training area, drop route, replay, or standard match type. Do not update a driver, change every graphics option, restart the router, and reinstall the game at once. If the symptom disappears, you will not know which change helped; if it remains, you may have created new variables.

Low FPS and sudden frame-rate drops

1. Check the game’s minimum requirements

Start with the published requirements for the exact game and current client. Epic Games says that if a PC does not meet Fortnite’s minimum requirements, later troubleshooting steps cannot remove that underlying limitation; a different device or upgrade may be necessary. Even when requirements are met, Epic cautions that its steps may improve performance only slightly or not at all: “Remember that your experience in Fortnite is entirely dependent on what type of hardware you’re using, and the steps below may only improve your performance slightly or not change anything at all.” (Epic Games Player Support, Troubleshooting low frame rate (FPS) in Fortnite)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements are a starting boundary, not a promise of a particular frame rate. A PC that launches a game may still need reduced quality, a lower resolution, or a less demanding mode to maintain consistent play. Check the current requirements rather than relying on an old forum post, especially after a major client update.

2. Use the least disruptive checks first

  1. Verify game files. In the launcher, use its file-verification option for the affected game. Corrupt or incomplete assets can cause poor performance as well as crashes.
  2. Clear the launcher cache. Follow the game’s launcher support procedure; restart the launcher afterward.
  3. Update the graphics driver. Use the GPU manufacturer’s current driver and restart Windows. If the problem began immediately after an update, note that timing before trying a clean installation.
  4. Close unnecessary background applications. Browsers with many tabs, recording tools, overlays, and synchronisation jobs consume CPU, RAM, GPU time, or disk bandwidth.
  5. Check Windows power mode. A higher-performance mode can improve sustained laptop performance at the cost of battery life and heat. Keep the laptop connected to its proper power adapter when testing.
  6. Check the GPU control-panel profile. Ensure the game is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU and that an aggressive power-saving profile is not limiting it.

Epic’s Fortnite troubleshooting path also includes running the launcher as administrator, checking the drive, and reinstalling only when earlier checks fail. See the complete sequence in Epic’s Fortnite crashes, errors, and performance guide. Do not begin with a reinstall when file verification, drivers, and background load have not been tested.

On a laptop, test while plugged into the correct adapter and compare the selected Windows power mode with the symptom. A battery-saving profile can trade performance for battery life. Also check that the game is using the dedicated GPU rather than an integrated adapter. A multi-GPU system can otherwise appear to have a graphics problem when the game is simply assigned to the wrong processor.

3. Test settings methodically

Lower one demanding quality setting or resolution step, then repeat the same scene. If FPS rises substantially, rendering load is implicated; if it barely changes, the limit may be CPU, memory, storage, or background contention. Keep a note of the setting and result instead of applying a low preset and changing several variables at once. The objective is not merely a higher counter but a repeatable improvement without introducing visual faults.

Fortnite Performance Mode: what its examples do—and do not—prove

Epic publishes illustrative Performance Mode examples, not a benchmark promise. On a laptop with an Intel i5-8265U, 8 GB of RAM, and Intel UHD Graphics 620, its 720p standard-Squads example changed from 24 FPS to 61 FPS. On another with an AMD A10-5745M APU, 6 GB of RAM, and Radeon HD 8610G, the example changed from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are “24 to 61 FPS — Epic Games, undated support example accessed 2026” and “18 to 45 FPS — Epic Games, undated support example accessed 2026.” Hardware, game version, scene, thermals, and settings can produce very different results.

Use those figures as illustrations of what Performance Mode did on those two laptops, not as an expected percentage gain. A different resolution, match, driver, or temperature can change the outcome. If the mode helps, keep the rest of the test conditions unchanged long enough to determine whether the improvement persists.

Stutter and microstuttering when average FPS looks fine

A high average FPS does not guarantee even frame delivery. A short pause may be a frame-time spike, asset streaming event, driver conflict, or network correction rather than inadequate average rendering speed. This is why a frame-time graph or a careful description of when the hitch occurs is more useful than a single average number.

Try a game-specific graphics-API experiment

EA Help says microstuttering can relate to how a game is optimised across DirectX versions or to graphics-driver conflicts. For an affected title, try its alternate DirectX option, restart, and retest the same scene. Check the game’s patch notes before restoring the previous API; an update may have changed which mode is recommended. Treat this as a diagnostic experiment, not a universal setting. EA’s graphics guidance describes microstuttering as tiny shudders or jolts and distinguishes it from rubberbanding, which usually indicates latency or a jittery connection (EA Help, Troubleshoot graphics issues on PC).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not call a network correction “graphics stutter” simply because the screen pauses. If the image remains smooth but your character snaps, repeats an action, or moves backward, check latency and packet loss. If the whole image hitches while the network indicators remain normal, continue with frame-time, driver, memory, and storage checks.

Fortnite’s limited storage and memory advice

For older PCs using Fortnite Performance Mode, Epic says an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM can help the game fit in memory and reduce overall hitches and stutters. Check current requirements, available memory under load, drive health, interface compatibility, and upgrade limits before buying anything. This advice does not establish that an SSD or RAM upgrade fixes every game or every type of stutter.

An upgrade is therefore conditional, not a universal recommendation. Confirm that the motherboard or laptop accepts the proposed memory, that the drive has a compatible interface, and that the game is actually constrained by memory or storage activity during the hitch. If the problem occurs in several games, investigate the broader system; if it is limited to Fortnite’s older-hardware Performance Mode scenario, Epic’s advice is more directly relevant.

Isolate the cause

  • Compare one game with another. A single-title fault points toward its patch, files, or API.
  • Watch whether the hitch occurs at a fixed interval, when entering a new area, or during heavy effects.
  • Record frame time, not just FPS; a stable average can hide large spikes.
  • Disable one overlay or background recorder, retest, and then restore it if it made no difference.
  • Compare a fresh launch with a long session. A fault that appears only after extended play belongs in the temperature and airflow investigation as well.

Graphics errors, tearing, freezes, and black screens

Fortnite-specific stability checks

Epic’s Fortnite graphics procedure recommends checking requirements, lowering quality settings to test stability, updating drivers, and keeping 3D resolution at 100% in the described troubleshooting flow. If DirectX 12 is associated with crashes, freezing, or black screens, try Performance Mode. On a laptop or multi-GPU system, confirm that Fortnite uses the dedicated high-performance GPU. If settings repeatedly reset, Epic points to the game’s settings file and its read-only property; verify that the current client still uses the same interface before changing it. The relevant procedure is Epic’s Fortnite graphics troubleshooting page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lowering quality is a stability test, not proof that low settings are the permanent answer. If the fault disappears, restore options one at a time to find the setting or API associated with it. Keep 3D resolution at the value specified by Epic’s described flow while testing rather than changing it simultaneously with every other option.

Separate tearing, artifacts, and network correction

  • Tearing: multiple frames appear split across one display. EA suggests toggling V-Sync on as a possible remedy; it can add latency, so compare responsiveness as well as image quality.
  • Artifacting: persistent unusual pixel colors or shapes. Check GPU load and temperature and test another application. One isolated artifact does not prove a failed GPU, but persistent artifacts warrant hardware diagnosis.
  • Rubberbanding: your character snaps back or repeats movement. This normally indicates latency or a jittery connection, not a graphics setting.

Capture a description of what you see: a horizontal split suggests tearing, repeated colored pixels suggest artifacting, and a snap-back in movement suggests rubberbanding. These observations determine whether to test V-Sync, temperature and GPU strain, or the network. Do not diagnose a failing graphics card from one transient pixel anomaly; persistence across applications or sessions is more meaningful.

When problems begin after extended play

If the game is normal at first and graphics faults appear only after a long session, overheating is a plausible cause. Check that vents are unobstructed, inspect fans and airflow areas for dust, and use the PC in a well-ventilated location. A compressed-air duster is relevant only when inspection finds dust or blockage; follow the computer manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, power down safely, and do not expect cleaning by itself to raise FPS.

Compare the temperature trend and fan behavior at launch with the point where the fault begins. If cleaning reveals no obstruction, do not keep repeating it as a performance ritual; continue with driver, hardware, and stability diagnosis. A maintenance product is justified only by the observed dust or airflow condition.

Crashes, freezes, and launch failures

Fortnite’s ordered escalation

  1. Search the exact error message, including punctuation or code.
  2. Confirm the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements.
  3. Verify game files and clear the launcher cache.
  4. Update graphics drivers and restart.
  5. Try launching the launcher as administrator where Epic’s instructions call for it.
  6. Only then consider reinstalling the launcher or game, checking security exclusions exactly as Epic documents, testing another drive, checking background applications, and checking drive errors.
  7. Escalate to Epic Support or the hardware manufacturer when the evidence points outside the game.

Do not translate a security-exclusion instruction into “turn off antivirus.” Follow the game’s documented steps and restore normal protection when testing is complete. Reinstallation is a late step because it consumes time and may not address a driver, drive, heat, or hardware problem.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS stability checks

PUBG Support’s general crashing and performance guide recommends current Windows and graphics drivers. A clean driver or game installation can help when corruption or installation problems are suspected. If the PC is overclocked, return hardware to manufacturer defaults while troubleshooting; operation outside those recommendations can contribute to instability, file corruption, or memory corruption. This is an isolation step, not proof that every overclock causes crashes.

Because Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG use different launchers and menus, apply the named procedure to the named game. A PUBG clean-install recommendation does not mean every Fortnite player should reinstall, and a Fortnite launcher-cache step does not substitute for PUBG’s own support instructions.

What to collect before escalation

Write down when the problem began, every affected game, the exact error text, what changed beforehand, and whether it reproduces in another title. Preserve DxDiag information and the relevant crash dump. PUBG Support specifically requests this material; Epic directs unresolved cases to support or the hardware manufacturer depending on the issue. A precise report is more useful than “it keeps crashing.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include whether drivers and Windows were current, whether an overclock was present, whether the failure occurred immediately or after extended play, and which ordered checks you already completed. This prevents support from repeating steps without knowing the result.

High ping, packet loss, lag, and rubberbanding

Understand the measurements

EA defines ping (latency) as the time for game data to travel from your platform to a data center and back, measured in milliseconds. Packet loss is the number or percentage of packets that fail to complete that trip. In Apex Legends, EA says high ping and packet loss can negatively affect play and notes that lag may begin above 100 ms. Its named guidance is:

EA Apex Legends guidance How to interpret it
Under 50 ms Described by EA as particularly good
Under 100 ms Described by EA as running well
50–150 ms Range cited on the 2026 guidance page

These are Apex Legends guidance, not universal standards for every game, server, or route. The definition appears in EA’s Apex Legends ping, packet-loss, and lag guide.

Ping and packet loss describe different problems. A high but steady latency points toward distance or routing; packet loss means some data fails to complete the trip and can produce corrections, missed actions, or rubberbanding. Watch both values during the actual fault rather than relying on a speed test that does not use the game’s route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apex Legends diagnostic order

  1. Enable Performance Display in the game’s settings and watch FPS, latency, and packet loss during the fault.
  2. Select the nearest available data center.
  3. Check server status and official reports if all data centers show poor results.
  4. Investigate the local connection: shared Wi-Fi use, a wireless link, background downloads or uploads, and router location or obstruction can all contribute.
  5. Retest after changing one network condition at a time.

Start with the game’s own measurements and server selection before buying equipment. If every listed data center looks poor, server status or an official incident is more plausible than a graphics setting. If only your local connection is affected, reduce competing network use, inspect the wireless conditions, and retest.

Do not change graphics quality to fix a measured network fault. Conversely, lowering resolution cannot repair packet loss or a distant data-center route. If latency and packet loss are normal while FPS collapses, return to the rendering and system checks instead.

A decision framework when several causes are plausible

  • Timing: constant low FPS suggests capability or settings; intermittent hitches suggest frame pacing, loading, or contention; faults after an hour suggest heat.
  • Scope: one game points to its client, patch, or files; several games point to drivers, Windows, hardware, or the network.
  • Subsystem: use GPU/CPU load and settings for rendering, memory and drive checks for loading hitches, temperature and airflow for heat, and latency/packet loss for connectivity.
  • Evidence: keep an FPS or frame-time reading, temperature trend, ping and packet-loss reading, or exact crash log alongside each test.

Change one factor, retest the same conditions, and record the result. This prevents a simultaneous driver update, graphics change, router restart, and reinstall from hiding which action mattered.

When to stop troubleshooting alone

Escalate when persistent artifacts continue across tests, crashes remain after the game’s ordered checks, a drive shows errors, or the PC becomes unstable outside the game. Include the records requested by the relevant support team. If the evidence points to hardware, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service rather than repeatedly changing game settings.

What the cited guidance can—and cannot—tell you

The figures cited here are game-specific support guidance and illustrative examples, not independent performance studies. No broad statistic establishes how common each PC battle-royale problem is. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my game stuttering when FPS is high?

Average FPS can hide frame-time spikes. Test the same scene, watch frame pacing, and check for a graphics-driver or DirectX conflict, asset-loading hitch, memory or storage pressure, overlay, or network correction. EA recommends trying an alternate DirectX setting as a game-specific diagnostic experiment, then restarting and checking patch notes.

Can an SSD or more RAM fix battle-royale stutter?

Only in specific conditions. Epic says an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM can help older PCs running Fortnite Performance Mode fit the game in memory and reduce hitches. Check current requirements, memory pressure, drive health, and hardware compatibility before buying; the advice is not a universal fix.

What ping is good for Apex Legends?

EA’s Apex Legends guidance describes under 50 ms as particularly good, under 100 ms as running well, and says lag may begin above 100 ms. Those figures apply to EA’s guidance for Apex Legends, not every game or network route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does rubberbanding mean my graphics card is failing?

Usually not. Rubberbanding is a snap-back or repeated movement associated with latency or a jittery connection. Enable Apex Legends Performance Display, check ping and packet loss, select the nearest data center, and investigate server status and local Wi-Fi conditions.

Should I reinstall the game first when it crashes?

No. Epic’s Fortnite sequence starts with the exact error, requirements, file verification, launcher-cache clearing, drivers, and an administrator launch where documented. Reinstallation, another drive, security exclusions, and drive checks come later if simpler steps fail.

Can cleaning dust increase FPS?

Cleaning is relevant when blocked vents or dust are contributing to overheating. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use compressed air only when inspection finds an obstruction. Cleaning does not guarantee higher FPS, and persistent faults need further temperature, driver, or hardware diagnosis.

What should I send support for repeated PUBG crashes?

PUBG Support requests the start date, full description, exact error, DxDiag information, and the relevant crash dump. Also state whether Windows and drivers were current, whether an overclock was present, and which troubleshooting steps you already tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Measure the symptom, match it to the right subsystem, and change one variable at a time. Check requirements and files before reinstalling, treat Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG procedures as game-specific, and use FPS, frame time, temperature, ping, packet loss, and crash logs to verify each result. Hardware purchases, cleaning, and network changes are conditional fixes—not universal answers.
