What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Kingdom Hearts crashes on your PC, use Square Enix’s documented order: make sure the computer is online and the game is fully updated, update your graphics driver, restart Windows, and reinstall the game if the crash continues. If none of those steps works, contact Square Enix with an MSInfo .nfo report and a DxDiag report.
Controller problems need a separate diagnosis. Square Enix lists Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers as only partially supported on PC, and some navigation may still require a keyboard and mouse. A controller that fails only in the background on Steam has a specific Desktop Layout setting to check; other detection problems call for general Windows isolation steps rather than a guaranteed Kingdom Hearts fix.

Start with the lowest-risk path
Do not begin by changing several drivers, remapping layers, and graphics options at once. A controlled sequence tells you whether the failure is a game-version problem, a graphics-driver problem, a damaged installation, a Windows device conflict, or a limitation of partial controller support.

- Update the graphics-card driver, then restart the PC.
- If the crash remains, reinstall the game.
- If it still fails, contact Square Enix and attach the requested MSInfo and DxDiag reports.
- For controller trouble, first decide whether input fails in the foreground, in the background, or everywhere. Then test one hardware or Steam setting change at a time.
These steps are deliberately conservative. Square Enix’s support material does not identify one universal crash cause or promise that a particular graphics setting, overlay, GPU selection, frame cap, or controller workaround will solve every PC installation.

What official PC support actually covers
Square Enix’s PC support pages separate two ideas that are easy to confuse:
- Crash guidance: a general escalation sequence based on version, connection, graphics drivers, restart, and reinstallation. It is not a diagnosis of one known Kingdom Hearts bug.
- Controller compatibility: Xbox, PlayStation DualShock, PlayStation DualSense, and Steam Input controllers are listed as partially supported. “Partially” means a listed controller family can work while some menus, prompts, or navigation still require keyboard and mouse input.
The support pages retrieved on October 9, 2026 do not display publication or update dates. Game builds, Windows drivers, and Steam labels can change, so check the current wording and menu names when you perform a step. Compatibility is stated for controller families, not for every model, firmware revision, wireless adapter, or remapping profile.
Fixing Kingdom Hearts crashes on PC
1. Confirm the connection and game version
Start with the two checks Square Enix places first. Verify that Windows has a working internet connection, then check the launcher or store client for an available Kingdom Hearts update. Install the latest version offered for your edition before investigating deeper.
A version check matters even when the game launches successfully once. A later crash can occur after an interrupted update, a partially applied patch, or a mismatch between the installed files and the current service. Do not assume that reinstalling a driver has updated the game itself; confirm both independently.
- Open the client where you installed the game and use its update or verify-for-updates control.
- Wait for the update to finish completely rather than launching while files are still being downloaded.
- Restart the client after an update if it continues to display an older build.
- Record the game edition and version shown by the client; those details help support distinguish builds.
2. Update the graphics driver and restart Windows
Install the current driver supplied for your graphics card by its manufacturer, using the manufacturer’s normal update process. When installation completes, restart Windows before testing Kingdom Hearts again. The restart is part of the sequence: it allows the newly installed driver components to load and closes processes left over from the failed session.
Keep this test narrow. Do not simultaneously change resolution, graphics presets, overlays, frame limits, or which GPU the game uses and then treat the result as proof of a cause. Square Enix’s crash guidance does not identify any of those settings as an official universal remedy.

3. Reinstall only after the first checks fail
If the game still crashes after the version, connection, driver, and restart checks, reinstall it. A reinstall can replace damaged or incomplete game files, but it also takes time and may remove local configuration depending on the launcher. Before uninstalling, note any settings or save-data instructions supplied for your edition and make backups only through supported procedures.
Let the new installation finish without pausing the download or launching the game midway. Apply any update offered after installation, then perform one clean launch before adding overlays, remappers, or other optional software back into the test.
4. Escalate with the reports Square Enix requests
If the crash continues after reinstallation, contact Square Enix rather than cycling through increasingly risky tweaks. Include an MSInfo report saved as an .nfo file and a DxDiag report. Square Enix’s support instructions explain how to generate both reports and where to provide them with your case.
Describe the failure precisely: whether it happens at launch, during a particular scene, after changing focus, or at apparently random times; which Kingdom Hearts edition and version are installed; and which of the official steps you completed. Attach the reports unmodified unless support asks for a different format. They contain system and driver details that are more useful than a generic statement that “the game crashes.”
Understand the PC controller limitation before troubleshooting
Kingdom Hearts on PC does not promise complete feature parity for every controller. Square Enix identifies these categories as partially supported:
| Controller category | What the support statement establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox controllers | The Xbox family is on the partial-support list. | It does not guarantee every model, cable, wireless adapter, button prompt, or menu will behave identically. |
| PlayStation DualShock | DualShock controllers are on the partial-support list. | It does not guarantee complete navigation or identical behavior across generations and connection methods. |
| PlayStation DualSense | DualSense controllers are on the partial-support list. | It does not establish model-specific compatibility or promise that every advanced feature is available. |
| Steam Input | Steam Input is named as a supported category. | It does not make every community configuration or remapping profile an official fix. |
Keyboard and mouse may still be necessary for part of the game’s navigation. Therefore, a controller working during gameplay does not prove that every title screen, launcher prompt, or background interaction will accept controller input. Keep a keyboard and mouse connected while testing so that a missing menu action is not mistaken for a total game failure.

First identify where controller input fails
The location and timing of the failure determine the next safe test. Use the following distinctions before changing settings.
| Observed behavior | Most useful first check | What to avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Input fails while Kingdom Hearts is the active window. | Check the connection, Windows detection, drivers, and competing devices. | Do not assume Steam’s background setting will repair an active-window detection problem. |
| Input works in the game’s foreground but stops when another window has focus. | Check Steam’s controller option for PC controls through Desktop Layout. | Do not treat this setting as a general fix for every controller issue. |
| Input is erratic, duplicated, or buttons appear to control two actions. | Disconnect other input devices and disable or remove one remapping layer for a controlled test. | Do not change several profiles at once; you will not know which layer caused the behavior. |
| The controller is not detected by Windows or another game. | Try another USB port, then update or reinstall the controller driver and test the device elsewhere. | Do not assume Kingdom Hearts is the cause until the controller works independently. |
Fix Steam background-input problems
Square Enix provides a specific instruction for the case described as controller input not working in the background while using a controller on Steam. In Steam’s controller settings, enable the option that allows the controller to be used for PC controls through Desktop Layout.
- Open Steam’s controller settings.
- Find the setting for using the controller for PC controls through Desktop Layout.
- Enable that setting.
- Return to Kingdom Hearts and test the same background action that previously failed.
The exact wording and location of Steam controls can change with the client interface. Look for the Desktop Layout reference rather than relying on an old screenshot or a guide written for a different Steam version. This instruction applies to the background-input case; it is not a promise that enabling Desktop Layout will repair foreground detection, damaged drivers, or unsupported menu behavior.

Keeping an unsuccessful change in place can add another input layer to an already difficult diagnosis.
Use general Windows controller checks for detection and erratic input
Square Enix’s broader Windows controller guidance is not Kingdom Hearts-specific. It is appropriate when Windows does not see the device reliably, when input is intermittent, or when another device may be competing for the same controls.
Try a different USB port
Disconnect the controller and connect it to another USB port directly on the PC. Avoid drawing a conclusion from a single port: a loose connection, a hub, or a port-specific problem can look like a game fault. If the controller is wireless, test the receiver or cable according to its normal Windows setup and keep the radio receiver close enough for a stable connection during the test.

Update or reinstall the controller driver
Use Windows’ device-management tools or the controller manufacturer’s supported package to update the driver. If an update does not help, reinstalling the device driver is another general Windows step. Restart Windows afterward, then check whether the controller is detected before launching Kingdom Hearts.

Reduce active devices to isolate conflicts
Disconnect other gamepads, steering wheels, flight controls, virtual controllers, and unnecessary USB input devices. Test with one physical controller, a keyboard, and a mouse. If the problem disappears, reconnect devices one by one until the conflicting combination is identified.
Test the controller with another device
Check the controller on another compatible computer or device. A failure that follows the controller points toward the device, cable, receiver, or driver; a controller that works elsewhere leaves the original PC, its input layers, or Kingdom Hearts’ partial-support behavior as the remaining areas to examine. This test does not by itself prove which component is at fault, but it prevents you from replacing a working controller unnecessarily.
Handle Steam Input and remapping layers as controlled experiments
Community reports describe different Steam Input configurations and conflicts caused by duplicate or virtual input devices. These reports are anecdotes, not controlled tests, and they do not establish a universal repair. Use them only after the basic checks and only one change at a time.
- Write down the current Steam Input and controller profile before changing it.
- Change one setting or profile.
- Restart the game and reproduce the same input failure.
- If there is no improvement, revert that change before trying another.
- Keep only the configuration that produces a repeatable improvement without introducing duplicate buttons or lost navigation.
A remapping layer can make a controller appear to work in one context while interfering in another. For example, a profile may send keyboard commands to a menu but gamepad commands during play. That is why a single foreground test and a separate background test are more informative than a general statement that “Steam Input is on.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a controller without assuming new hardware is the cure
You do not need to buy a controller simply because an existing one is difficult to configure. Check the existing device, its connection, Windows detection, and Steam settings first. If replacement is necessary, an Xbox-compatible PC controller is at least within a controller family Square Enix names in its partial-support list, but that label is not a guarantee for a particular model or a promise that it will fix a software conflict.

For a practical comparison, evaluate these four axes before spending money:
- Named family: Is it Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, or another category not identified by Square Enix?
- Connection: Can you test it wired first, removing wireless receivers and battery state from the diagnosis?
- Failure context: Does the problem occur only when Kingdom Hearts is in the background, or while it is the active window?
- Input layers: Are Steam Input, manufacturer software, virtual controllers, or other physical devices active at the same time?
Because the support statement is family-level and partial, there is no evidence here to rank individual controller products or to claim that one connection method is universally superior.
Keep crash and controller investigations separate
A controller problem and a crash can occur in the same session without sharing a cause. Treat them as two tracks. Complete the official crash sequence without adding controller remappers, then test controller input with the simplest device arrangement you can create. Conversely, do not reinstall the game solely because a controller stops responding in the background when the documented Steam Desktop Layout setting addresses that specific context.
Separating the tracks also improves a support case. Tell Square Enix whether the crash happens with no controller connected, with one controller connected, or only after a particular Steam profile is enabled. Do not claim that the controller caused the crash unless the behavior is repeatable under those controlled conditions.
When a change makes things worse
- Several settings changed together: restore the notes you made before testing and return to the last known configuration.
- Duplicate or drifting controls appear: disconnect extra devices and remove one remapping layer, then test again.
- Background input still fails: verify the Desktop Layout option, then revert unrelated Steam Input experiments.
- Windows no longer detects the controller: try another USB port, reinstall or update the driver, and test the controller on another device.
- Crashes continue after reinstall: stop escalating through unofficial tweaks and prepare the MSInfo and DxDiag reports for Square Enix.
Reverting an unsuccessful experiment is part of troubleshooting, not a sign that the controller or game is permanently damaged.
Prepare a useful Square Enix support request
Once the documented crash steps are exhausted, provide support with enough context to reproduce the problem. Include:
- The Kingdom Hearts edition, installed version, and store or launcher used.
- Whether the PC was online and whether the game was updated before testing.
- Your graphics-card driver version and the date you updated it.
- The exact point at which the crash occurs and whether it is repeatable.
- Whether the crash occurs with the controller disconnected and whether any Steam Input or other remapping layer is active.
- An MSInfo
.nforeport and a DxDiag report generated using Square Enix’s current instructions.
For a controller case, state the controller family, wired or wireless connection, whether Windows detects it, whether input works in the foreground, and whether the failure is limited to background use. Those details distinguish a partial-support limitation from a Windows detection problem and from a Steam configuration issue.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Game crashes: online connection and current version checked; graphics driver updated; Windows restarted; game reinstalled if needed; MSInfo and DxDiag ready for support if it still fails.
- Controller works in play but not when another window is active: inspect Steam’s Desktop Layout PC-controls option.
- Controller is missing or erratic in the foreground: try another USB port, update or reinstall the driver, disconnect other devices, and test the controller elsewhere.
- Steam Input or duplicate-device workaround suggested by a forum: treat it as an anecdotal experiment, change one thing, and revert it if it does not help.
- Menus do not respond to the controller: keep a keyboard and mouse available because PC controller support is partial.
