Start with the symptom, not a random fix
A crash, a low frame rate, and an unresponsive gamepad can have completely different causes. Use the first matching branch below, and record what changes after each step. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to tell which action helped.

These steps are a troubleshooting sequence, not a guarantee that every JRPG behaves the same way. Publishers, storefronts, hardware, drivers, and game updates all affect the correct remedy.

Identify the exact PC version before troubleshooting
Record the storefront and edition
Write down whether you installed the game through Steam or through a Windows 10/11 distribution, along with the game’s version number if it displays one. A controller standard accepted by one edition may not be accepted by another. The same title can also have different patches, launchers, or configuration files between storefronts.

Compare your hardware with the published requirements
Check the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and operating-system requirements. Minimum requirements are a starting threshold, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Steam’s performance guidance notes that computers with the same nominal specification can behave differently, so use the requirements to rule out an obvious mismatch rather than to predict an exact result.
Keep a change log
- Note the game version, Windows version, graphics-driver version, and whether the issue began after an update.
- Change one setting or connection at a time.
- Test in the same save or area for a comparable result.
- Return a setting to its previous value when it has no measurable effect.
Fix crashes, launch failures, and black screens
1. Apply the basic support sequence
- Install any pending update for the game.
- Restart the PC rather than only closing the game. This clears a stuck launcher, driver state, or background process.
- Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU. Use the driver package intended for your exact graphics hardware.
- Launch the game again before making other changes. If it now works, the update or restart was the relevant correction.
Square Enix’s general PC-crash guidance uses this order and recommends reinstalling only if the problem continues. Reinstallation consumes time and bandwidth and will not correct an incompatible driver or peripheral by itself.
2. Verify a Steam installation
If the Steam build crashes, will not start, or opens to a black screen, use Steam’s file-verification command for that game. In the Steam client, open the game’s properties, find the installed-files section, and choose the option to verify the integrity of the files. Let the process finish, then launch the game again. Files that are missing or damaged are replaced; your save data is not a substitute for this check.
Do not interrupt verification or manually delete random files from the installation directory. If verification reports no problem, continue with the display and driver steps rather than repeating the same scan.
3. Test display modes and resolution when the window is blank
A Square Enix support article for FINAL FANTASY IX lists switching between windowed and fullscreen modes and reducing screen resolution as possible remedies. Treat these as title-specific suggestions, not a universal JRPG fix. If you can reach a launcher or configuration screen, switch one mode at a time and test after each change.

- Try windowed mode if fullscreen produces a black display or an immediate crash.
- Try fullscreen if a windowed launch is unresponsive.
- Temporarily select a lower resolution that your monitor supports.
- After the game is stable, raise resolution or change display mode individually.
Altering device settings can introduce a new issue, so record the original value before changing it.
4. Remove peripherals as a crash test
Disconnect nonessential USB devices, including extra controllers, wheels, capture hardware, and hubs, then start the game. The cited title-specific guidance includes temporarily removing peripherals. This is an isolation test, not a recommendation to play permanently without your equipment. Reconnect one device at a time after the game launches successfully to identify a conflict.
5. Reinstall only after the earlier checks
Use a clean reinstall when updates, a restart, driver maintenance, file verification, display changes, and peripheral isolation have not solved the crash. Back up saves according to the game’s own instructions before removing it. A reinstall can repair a persistently incomplete installation, but it cannot make a game support an input standard or hardware configuration that it does not accept.
6. Prepare useful files for publisher support
If the crash persists, contact the game publisher’s support channel. Square Enix asks PC players to include an MSInfo report and a DxDiag report with a crash request. These files describe Windows, hardware, drivers, and installed components more precisely than a sentence such as “it keeps crashing.” Include the exact symptom, when it occurs, the storefront and game version, and the troubleshooting steps that already failed.
Reduce low FPS, stuttering, and choppy motion
Check whether the PC is within the game’s requirements
Start with the title’s published requirements and identify whether the game is running on integrated graphics or a dedicated GPU. Steam explains that integrated graphics are generally weaker than dedicated graphics. If your hardware is below the stated requirement, settings changes may make the game more usable, but no support page can promise a specific frame rate.

Free memory and processor time
Close programs you do not need while playing, especially large browsers, launchers, video tools, and background utilities. Steam notes that when available RAM is insufficient, Windows may move data to disk; that swapping can produce noticeable FPS effects. Reopen only the applications you need after testing so the comparison remains clear.
Update the relevant drivers
Install current CPU, GPU, and audio drivers from the appropriate hardware vendor. Audio-driver problems can appear as stutter or instability even when the picture looks correct. Restart after a driver installation when the installer requests it, then test the same game scene again.
Lower demanding settings in a controlled order
Reduce one variable, test, and write down the result. Resolution usually has a large workload impact; then test demanding visual options such as shadows, effects, reflections, or high-detail settings if the game exposes them. Do not claim a fixed FPS gain: the result depends on the game, hardware, driver, and scene.

Use integrated-graphics advice carefully
Steam’s general guidance for systems using integrated graphics includes lowering shader detail and trying windowed mode. Apply those suggestions only when they match your game’s options and requirements. They are broad support advice, not a guarantee for every JRPG or every integrated GPU.
Distinguish a steady low frame rate from stutter
- Consistently low FPS: begin with resolution, visual quality, and hardware requirements.
- Short pauses or uneven frame pacing: close background software, check available memory, and test drivers before changing every visual option.
- Stutter that began after a patch: record the game version and report the reproducible area or action to the publisher.
Steam’s troubleshooting page is intentionally general and cannot diagnose every individual machine. If one setting change has no effect, restore it and move to the next variable rather than stacking unmeasured tweaks.

Make a controller work with the correct game version
Understand DirectInput and XInput
Controller support is a property of the specific game build and storefront, not of “JRPGs” as a category. In one Square Enix FAQ, the Steam version supports both DirectInput and XInput, while the Windows 10/11 version supports XInput only. That distinction explains why a pad can work in one edition of a game but appear dead in another. Check the support page for your exact title and version before buying or replacing hardware.

1. Confirm the game’s requirements and connection
Read the controller section for the game and storefront you actually installed. Connect the controller directly to the PC, if possible, and try another USB port. A different port can bypass a faulty socket, hub, or power path.
2. Test with other devices disconnected
Unplug extra controllers, flight sticks, racing wheels, adapters, and other input devices. Multiple devices can create an input-order or mapping conflict. Start the game with only the controller under test attached, then reconnect devices one at a time.

3. Refresh the controller driver
Install the current driver for the controller and allow Windows to rediscover the device. If the device is already listed but behaves incorrectly, reinstalling its driver can clear a corrupted device state. Restart Windows after the driver operation when requested.

4. Try a known-compatible controller
Square Enix’s Windows controller guidance suggests trying a genuine Xbox controller as a diagnostic. This does not prove that every other controller is incompatible; it gives you a known XInput-oriented comparison. If the second controller works in the same port and game, the original device, its mode switch, or its driver becomes the leading suspect.
5. Test the original controller on another device
Connect the pad to another compatible computer or console. If it fails there as well, contact the controller manufacturer. If it works elsewhere, focus on the game version, Windows driver, USB connection, or input software on the original PC instead of replacing the pad immediately.
6. Resolve erratic movement and drift-like input
- Disconnect every other controller and input device.
- Verify that the cable or wireless receiver is firmly connected.
- Temporarily turn off third-party controller-mapping software.
- Run the controller’s calibration procedure in Windows or the manufacturer utility.
- Launch the game again and test a consistent movement sequence.
- If the movement remains erratic, restart the PC with the controller unplugged, then connect it after Windows loads.
The cited Square Enix support article presents input conflicts and calibration as possible causes. The sequence is a diagnostic option, not proof that every drifting stick has the same fault.
Why a controller works in one game but not another
Different games can read different APIs, apply different button mappings, or ship in storefront versions with different support. A controller may therefore pass a Windows test and work in one game while receiving no input in another. Compare these three variables:

Escalate when the game remains broken after the basic sequence that matches your symptom: updates, restart, graphics-driver maintenance, Steam verification where applicable, controlled display changes, and device isolation. Contact the publisher when the problem is reproducible and title-specific, especially after a patch. Contact the controller manufacturer when the device fails on another compatible system as well.
Give support a concise reproduction report:
- Game title, storefront, edition, and version
- Windows version and PC hardware
- Graphics, CPU, audio, and controller driver versions
- Exact trigger: launch, loading screen, menu, battle, or a particular area
- Whether file verification, driver updates, another USB port, and another controller changed the result
- MSInfo and DxDiag files when requested by Square Enix support
A reproducible report lets support distinguish a damaged installation from an input-compatibility issue or a game-specific defect.

Consider replacement only after checking the game’s supported input standard, testing another port, disconnecting competing devices, refreshing drivers, and testing the original pad on another device.
