GST Portal errors become much easier to fix when you first identify the workflow that failed. A rejected password or CAPTCHA is an account problem; a missing registration code, Aadhaar authentication code, and GSTR-3B EVC are different OTP workflows; an invoice upload rejection is usually a data-validation problem; and a blocked return can be a filing-sequence problem. Use the decision table below, then follow only the branch that matches your error.
Start by identifying the failed GST workflow
Do not treat every message saying that an OTP is expired or incorrect as the same failure. GSTN documentation distinguishes registration and enrolment codes, Aadhaar authentication, and the EVC used to submit a return. The recipient, validity period, and resend action can differ.

Before trying another OTP: secure and verify the account
Use the official GST Portal and the user ID created for that taxpayer or authorized signatory. A valid login is required before you can prepare or file a return. Check the spelling and case of the user ID and password, then type the CAPTCHA shown on the current page rather than reusing one from an earlier attempt.
- Never tell another person your password, security answer, or OTP. GSTN’s enrolment guidance states: “No government department or official would ask for your account credentials or OTP details.”
- If someone may have obtained your credentials, change the password as soon as you can and report suspected unauthorized activity to the GST Helpdesk. Do not keep sharing codes while trying to obtain “technical support.”
- Keep the registered mobile phone and email account available. A code sent to a different channel cannot be replaced by a code from an old message.
- Record the exact error text, form, tax period, and time of the attempt. Those details help the helpdesk distinguish an account failure from a return-validation failure.
There is no official evidence that a third-party “cleanup” utility fixes GSTN authentication. If credentials are correct but the portal still refuses access, capture the message and escalate through the GSTN helpdesk rather than installing an unrelated utility or disclosing your OTP.

Fix login and registration credential problems
When the user ID, password, or CAPTCHA is rejected
- Open the GST Portal and confirm that you are using the appropriate taxpayer or authorized-signatory user ID.
- Type the password again carefully. Avoid copying an extra space from a password manager or message.
- Enter the CAPTCHA exactly as displayed, then submit once.
- If the portal offers a password-reset route, use the registered contact details and create a new password through that route.
- After a successful login, verify that the correct GSTIN and tax period are selected before opening a return.
Repeatedly submitting an old password or an old CAPTCHA does not repair an account. If the reset message does not arrive, check the registered email’s spam or quarantine folder and the mobile number associated with the account.
When registration or enrolment sends separate codes
GSTN’s registration material describes cases in which the mobile and email OTPs are distinct. Check both registered channels and match each code to the field that requests it. A code delivered to email is not interchangeable with the code delivered by SMS.
- Leave the current registration or enrolment page open while checking the registered email and mobile.
- Search the email inbox and spam folder for the current GSTN message.
- Use the portal’s Resend action if a code is missing or has become stale.
- Enter the newly issued code or code pair. Once a replacement is requested, do not continue trying an older code.
- If neither channel receives a new code, save the application reference or TRN and contact GSTN support with that reference.
Registration OTP handling is documented in GSTN’s “Apply for Registration Normal Taxpayer” guide. The same guide’s validity statements apply to the registration flow described there; they should not be copied to every other OTP function on the portal.

When you suspect unauthorized access
Stop sharing information with anyone who claims to be an official and asks for an OTP, password, or security answer. Change the password through the portal, review whether the registered contact details are still under your control, and notify the GST Helpdesk about the suspected activity. Keep screenshots and timestamps, but redact the OTP and password before sending any evidence.

Fix an expired or incorrect OTP during return filing
GSTR-3B EVC: the documented 10-minute validity window
GSTN’s known-issues guide specifically addresses the EVC OTP used when filing GSTR-3B. It says the code is valid for only 10 minutes and recommends generating a new one when the earlier code expires. The guide’s exact error examples include “OTP is either expired or incorrect” and “Your OTP is expired please try again.”
- Return to the GSTR-3B filing step and choose the EVC option again.
- Request a fresh OTP.
- Wait for the newest SMS or email, then check that you are reading the latest message rather than an earlier resend.
- Enter the new code carefully before the 10-minute window ends.
- If it is rejected, request one more fresh code instead of retrying the expired value.
The 10-minute figure is a GSTR-3B EVC instruction in the cited known-issues material. It is not a universal validity rule for every GST OTP, including registration or Aadhaar authentication.
Aadhaar authentication: use its own recipient and time window
Aadhaar authentication is a registration step, not the EVC used to submit a return. Follow the recipient, resend, and authentication-link instructions displayed for the Aadhaar workflow. The GSTN Aadhaar FAQ states a 15-day verification window after the applicable registration submission or TRN process. Because portal procedures can change, check the current instructions in GSTN’s Aadhaar Authentication FAQ before relying on that window.
If the Aadhaar-linked mobile does not receive the code, verify that the number is the one associated with Aadhaar and use the portal’s resend or authentication-link option. Do not substitute a GSTR-3B EVC or a registration email code.

Registration OTP versus filing EVC
| Characteristic | Registration or enrolment OTP | Aadhaar authentication | GSTR-3B filing EVC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Create or continue a taxpayer registration or enrolment | Authenticate Aadhaar during registration | Authorize final return submission |
| Typical recipient | Registered mobile and, where requested, registered email | Aadhaar-linked mobile or the channel shown by the authentication flow | SMS or email channel offered by the filing screen |
| Validity information in the cited GSTN material | Use the period stated in the registration guide | 15-day verification window stated in the Aadhaar FAQ | 10 minutes, according to the GSTR-3B known-issues entry |
| Correct response to expiry | Resend and enter the newest code | Restart or resend through the Aadhaar authentication step | Regenerate the EVC OTP and enter the latest code |
Fix GSTR-1 upload, invoice, and summary errors
Validate the recipient GSTIN first
An invoice can be rejected when the recipient GSTIN is invalid or was not active on the invoice date. Check every digit, confirm that the GSTIN belongs to the intended recipient, and verify its status for the date on the invoice. Correcting the recipient record is different from correcting an OTP or login problem.
- Compare the GSTIN in your accounting record with the recipient’s confirmed GSTIN.
- Check whether the recipient was active on the invoice date, not merely active today.
- Correct the invoice data in the portal or offline file, then upload the corrected record.
GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ describes this validation requirement and the available preparation routes.
Download and use the upload error report
When a JSON upload produces an error file, download that file from the portal and open it in the GST Returns Offline Tool or the relevant correction workflow. The report identifies the records and fields that failed validation. Correct those fields, regenerate the JSON, and upload the corrected file rather than repeatedly sending the original file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open the GSTR-1 upload area and locate the generated error report.
- Download and save the report with the tax-period name so it is not confused with a later upload.
- Read the error description for each invoice or record.
- Correct the source data, then recreate the upload file using the prescribed offline utility or portal format.
- Upload the corrected file and confirm that the records move into the accepted or processed state.
Generate the summary only when the portal allows it
After invoice details are added, GSTR-1 requires summary generation before filing. GSTN notes that summary generation is subject to an interval and that the system generates summaries periodically. If the screen tells you to wait, do not click the button repeatedly; allow the interval to pass, refresh the status once, and try again.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A missing summary can therefore mean that processing is still pending, not that every invoice disappeared. Check the processed-record count and any error report before re-entering data, which could create duplicates.
Choose a preparation method without confusing it with a fix
| Preparation route | Useful when | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Direct entry on the GST Portal | You have a manageable number of records and want immediate portal validation. | It does not bypass a portal outage, a blocked tax period, or an invalid recipient GSTIN. |
| GST Returns Offline Tool | You need to prepare or correct structured data locally and upload a JSON file. | It does not remove errors identified by the portal; you still need to read and correct the error report. |
| ASP application through a GSP | Your process requires software-assisted preparation or integration. | It is a preparation route, not evidence that a provider can repair a GSTN authentication or service-side failure. |
These three routes are listed in GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ. Select one based on your data volume and process, but diagnose validation, authentication, and service availability separately.

Check the filing sequence and tax period
A GSTR-3B filing can be blocked when GSTR-1 for the same period has not been filed. GSTN’s material also advises filing prior periods sequentially. Confirm the financial year, return period, form, and GSTIN before assuming that the button is broken.
- Open the return dashboard and select the correct financial year and tax period.
- Check the status of GSTR-1 for that same period.
- Review earlier periods for an unfiled return and file them in sequence where required.
- Return to GSTR-3B only after the prerequisite status updates.
- If the prerequisite is shown as filed but the block remains, record the period, ARN or reference number, and exact message for GSTN support.
Complete the final submission, not just the preview
A generated preview, saved draft, or prepared summary is not proof that the return was filed. Review the final figures, select the correct authorized signatory, and complete the signing method offered for that return.

- DSC: Use this when the authorized signatory is required or chooses to sign with a registered Digital Signature Certificate. A USB DSC token is relevant only to this DSC workflow; it does not fix a general login or OTP failure.
- EVC: Use the electronic verification option when it is available for the taxpayer and filing form, then enter the fresh code generated by the portal.
GSTN’s GSTR-3B filing instructions describe both DSC and EVC and state that the status changes to “Filed” after successful submission.
Confirm and retain evidence of filing
- Wait for the portal’s success response after signing or entering the EVC.
- Refresh the return dashboard and verify that the status is exactly “Filed,” not “Submitted,” “Saved,” “Prepared,” or “Pending.”
- Note the ARN or other acknowledgement reference shown by the portal.
- Download the filed return and acknowledgement, then store them with the period’s records.
If the page closes or times out during submission, do not immediately file a second time. First check the dashboard and filed-return list for the status and acknowledgement; a second attempt could create confusion if the first submission succeeded.
Match common messages to the right fix
| Message or symptom | What it usually indicates | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “OTP is either expired or incorrect” during GSTR-3B filing | Expired or mistyped EVC | Regenerate the EVC and enter the latest code within 10 minutes. |
| “Your OTP is expired please try again” | Stale code in the filing flow | Request a new code; do not reuse an earlier resend. |
| No registration email | Wrong channel, spam filtering, or stale request | Check the registered email and spam folder, then use Resend. |
| Invoice rejected because recipient is invalid or inactive | GSTIN validation failure | Check the recipient GSTIN and its status on the invoice date. |
| Upload created an error file | One or more records failed JSON or field validation | Download the report, correct the listed records, and upload again. |
| Summary button asks you to wait | Summary-generation interval or periodic processing | Wait for the stated interval and check processing status instead of repeatedly clicking. |
| GSTR-3B filing option unavailable | GSTR-1 or an earlier period may be unfiled | File the required periods sequentially and recheck the dashboard. |
| Return appears prepared but not filed | Final signing or EVC step was not completed | Complete DSC or EVC submission and verify the “Filed” status. |
When to contact GSTN support or a tax professional
Escalate when the portal rejects correct, newly generated codes; a filed prerequisite is not reflected after the dashboard updates; the account may be compromised; or the error affects the legal or tax treatment of a transaction rather than merely the mechanics of uploading it. GSTN support can investigate account and portal records, while a qualified tax professional should advise on tax classification, amendments, late filing, and other legal consequences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude the following in a support request, without exposing secrets:
- GSTIN and user role, with passwords, security answers, and OTPs removed.
- Form, financial year, tax period, and workflow: login, registration, Aadhaar, GSTR-1, or GSTR-3B EVC.
- Exact error text, date and time, browser or app screen, and whether the attempt was on the portal, offline tool, or an ASP/GSP route.
- ARN, TRN, upload filename, or error-report reference where applicable.
- Screenshots with personal credentials, OTPs, and unrelated personal data redacted.
Portal labels, validations, and workarounds can change. For the current procedure, use the linked GSTN guides: known issues, enrolment, registration, Aadhaar authentication, GSTR-1, and GSTR-3B filing.
