Most gravel tubeless problems come from one of six places: a puncture the sealant cannot close, inactive or poorly mixed sealant, an unseated bead, a leaking valve, failed rim tape, or a damaged tire casing. Find the actual leak before adding more fluid or more air. Keep a leaking puncture low so sealant can reach it, check the bead and valve when air escapes at the rim, and use a plug or tube when the damage is beyond what liquid sealant can repair.
Work within the lower maximum pressure printed for the tire or rim, whichever is lower. Do not ride on a visibly cut, bulged, cracked, or otherwise compromised tire until it has been inspected and repaired or replaced.

Start with a safe diagnosis
Identify where air is escaping before choosing a repair. A tire puncture is only one possibility; air can also leave through the bead, valve, rim tape, a porous sidewall, or a damaged rim.

Understand what has to seal
A tubeless system is an airtight assembly of four parts. The tire beads must lock against the rim’s bead seats; airtight rim tape must close every spoke-hole opening; the valve must seal against the tape; and the sealant must close small punctures and sometimes minor porosity in the casing. Failure in any one part can produce the same symptom: a tire that loses pressure.

- Sealant: a liquid intended to close ordinary tread punctures. It has to be compatible with the tire and present in an active, well-mixed state.
- Bead and rim: the tire and rim must be compatible, and the bead’s molded seating line should run evenly around the rim.
- Valve: the rubber base and retaining nut must sit cleanly and squarely against the rim tape.
- Rim tape: a continuous airtight layer over the rim bed. A nick, lifted edge, wrinkle, or wrong width can create a slow leak.
- Casing: the structural fabric and rubber of the tire. A large cut, snakebite, bulge, or split casing is not a normal sealant repair.
Fix a puncture that will not seal
Liquid sealant works best when it can reach the opening while the tire flexes. Holding the puncture at the top of the wheel lets fluid run away from it, so deliberately position the leak low.
- Stop and inspect. Move off the road or trail. Find the hole, check for glass or thorns, and look for a cut or bulge around it. Do not pull out a deeply embedded object until you are ready to control the leak.
- Put the hole at the bottom. Rotate the wheel until the puncture is near the ground. Gently rock or spin the wheel so sealant washes across the opening. Pressing the puncture area toward the ground can help fluid reach it.
- Flex the tire. Squeeze the sidewalls and roll the wheel a short distance by hand. This movement spreads sealant through the casing and across the hole.
- Give it time, then check pressure. Reinflate only to a pressure no higher than the lower maximum printed on the tire or rim. Watch whether the hiss stops and whether the tire remains seated.
- Use a plug for a larger puncture. If liquid continues to escape, a tubeless tire plug kit is the next relevant repair for a hole beyond the sealant’s ability. A plug is not guaranteed to be a permanent repair; inspect the result and replace the tire if the casing is compromised.
- Install a tube for severe damage. A long cut, snakebite, split sidewall, or other serious casing failure can exceed both sealant and plug capability. Schwalbe identifies a replacement tube as the fallback for this type of damage. Confirm the tube’s size and valve fit before installation.
Never continue riding a tire with exposed casing threads, a growing cut, a sidewall bubble, or a bead that is lifting from the rim. A repair that holds air while the wheel is stationary may fail under cornering and impacts.
When the tire loses air after setup
A newly mounted tire may lose pressure while sealant works its way around the bead and casing. That does not prove the tire is punctured. Locate the escape with a submerged wheel or assembly fluid, then address the specific area.

Bead or sidewall bubbling
Apply assembly fluid or soapy water around the bead and sidewall and watch for a line of bubbles. Rotate the wheel so sealant can reach that area, then gently shake and roll the wheel. Sealant coming through a porous casing can diminish as the liquid coats the inside, but persistent bubbling indicates that you must inspect the tire/rim combination and bead seating.

Sealant pooled away from the leak
Remove the valve core only if the sealant maker’s filling method permits it, and avoid adding fluid blindly. First distribute the existing sealant by rotating the wheel through several positions and flexing the tire. If the fluid has dried into flakes or cannot be redistributed, it may need renewal.
Pressure falls overnight
Mark the starting pressure and recheck the next day. A slow, repeatable loss deserves a systematic leak test rather than repeated top-ups. Check the valve hole and every section of rim tape as well as the bead. If the leak location changes after adding sealant, that still does not rule out a valve or tape fault.
Seat a tire that will not seat
Do not exceed the marked limit while trying to force a bead into place. Use the lower maximum pressure stated for the rim or tire, and stop if the bead line rises unevenly, the tire bulges, or the rim shows damage.

- Verify compatibility. Confirm that the tire diameter and width are approved for the rim, and that both are intended for tubeless use. An incompatible combination may never seat safely.
- Check the bead path. Deflate completely and inspect both beads. They should sit inside the rim channel before inflation, with no section trapped outside the bead seat. Position the valve between the beads so it does not hold one section away from the rim.
- Lubricate the beads. Coat the bead surfaces with an appropriate mounting fluid. Lubrication lets the rubber slide into the bead seat instead of sticking at one point.
- Prepare the air source. A floor pump may work; a compressor or tire booster supplies a stronger initial volume. Use a controlled burst rather than unregulated pressure, and keep fingers clear of the bead.
- Inflate and watch the seating line. Listen for the bead to pop into place, then inspect the molded line around both sidewalls. The line should be evenly spaced from the rim all the way around. If one section remains low, release air and reposition that section instead of simply raising pressure.
- Set the riding pressure. Once seated, adjust pressure to your chosen value without crossing the lower tire-or-rim maximum.
Schwalbe cautions against using carbon dioxide with its puncture-protection fluid because CO2 can adversely affect that fluid. Use a pump, compressor, or tire booster when possible, and follow the specific tire and sealant instructions.

Find and repair a valve-area or rim-bed leak
Air escaping near the valve or rim can look like a puncture because the pressure loss is similar. Submerge the inflated wheel section by section or brush on assembly fluid and watch for bubbles.
Valve contact
- Deflate the tire and clean sealant or grit from the valve base and rim surface.
- Check that the valve rubber is seated flat against the rim tape and that the retaining nut is secure by hand. Do not crush the rubber with excessive force.
- Inspect the valve for a split base, damaged threads, or a bent body. Replace a damaged valve rather than trying to seal it with extra sealant.
- Reinflate and repeat the bubble test before riding.
Rim tape
Remove the tire if the leak tracks along the rim bed. Look for a tape edge lifting, a wrinkle, a puncture at a spoke hole, or tape that is too narrow to cover the bed. Replace damaged tape with a tubeless-compatible width that fully covers the rim bed, keeping the installation clean and smooth. If the tape has shifted repeatedly, inspect the rim for a sharp edge that may be cutting it.
Cracked or damaged rim
A crack, failed rim joint, dent at the bead seat, or other structural fault is not a sealant problem. Deflate the tire, stop riding, and have the wheel inspected by a qualified mechanic or the rim manufacturer. Do not mask a structural defect with tape or a plug.

Sealant must be the correct formula for the tire system, mixed before use, and still liquid enough to flow. Schwalbe’s official tubeless FAQ identifies insufficient shaking before filling or transferring as a common reason a tubeless system does not remain airtight.

Shake before filling or transferring
Shake the bottle thoroughly immediately before adding or moving sealant. Heavier particles settle at the bottom; pouring only the clear liquid leaves the tire without the ingredients intended to close punctures.
Check compatibility and condition
Use the sealant maker’s compatibility guidance for your tire and rim. Inspect the fluid inside the tire: a dry skin, rubbery clumps, or little free liquid indicates that it may no longer be active. Renew it according to that product’s instructions. Schwalbe’s North American FAQ recommends checking and renewing sealant before a competition or longer journey; that is a pre-event recommendation, not a universal replacement interval for every formula.
Use the maker’s fill guidance
For Schwalbe Doc Blue, the manufacturer lists 60–90 ml for tires 23–60 mm wide. That figure applies to that product’s instruction and is not a universal gravel-tire dosage. Follow the exact sealant and tire maker guidance for a different formula, casing, or width.

Choose the right repair

Install a tube as an emergency fallback
A tube is a way to get a damaged wheel out of immediate trouble, not proof that the tire is safe for normal riding. Deflate fully, remove enough of one bead to insert the correctly sized tube, and inspect the inside of the tire for the thorn, glass, wire, or cut that caused the failure. A sharp object left inside can puncture the tube immediately.
- Confirm the tube diameter, width range, and valve type match the wheel.
- Check that the tire bead and rim have no sharp damage where the tube will sit.
- Install the tube without pinching it between the bead and rim.
- Inflate gradually while checking that the tube is not trapped and the bead is even.
- Keep pressure below the lower marked maximum for the tire or rim and ride only far enough to reach a safe repair location.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
- The tire has a cut that exposes casing threads, a sidewall bulge, or a split that opens when flexed.
- The bead line cannot be made even at a safe pressure.
- Air escapes from a rim crack, dent, joint, or other structural area.
- A new valve and correctly installed tape still leak at the rim bed.
- The tire repeatedly loses pressure after a confirmed sealant distribution and leak test.
- You cannot determine whether the tire is seated safely.
Take the wheel to a qualified bicycle mechanic or the rim/tire maker when any of these conditions applies. A shop can remove the tire, inspect the bead seats and tape, and determine whether the casing or rim should be replaced.
Prevent repeat tubeless failures
- Before every long ride or event, check that both tires hold their intended pressure and that no bead, valve, or sidewall bubbles appear during a quick inspection.
- Keep a compatible spare tube and a plug kit sized for your tires. A tube is especially important for remote gravel routes where a casing cut cannot be sealed.
- Renew sealant according to its maker’s instructions, and check it before a competition or long journey rather than assuming a tire is protected because it once held air.
- Shake sealant every time you fill or transfer it.
- After mounting, inspect the bead seating line around the entire rim, not just the section visible near the valve.
- Use the pressure limit marked on the rim and tire as a hard ceiling; the lower of the two always controls.
- Clean the valve and rim area when servicing the tire so grit cannot create a slow leak.
With the leak located first, the choice is straightforward: let active sealant close a small puncture, plug a larger hole in an otherwise sound tire, fit a tube for serious casing damage, or service the bead, valve, tape, or rim when the air is escaping from the wheel system itself.
