Start with the plate, not the printer’s hidden calibration settings. If the nozzle is scraping or pressing into the build plate, stop the job. Then verify that the plate is installed in the correct orientation and aligned with the heatbed, wash a touched surface with hot water and detergent, dry it, and confirm that the plate is the intended type for the print. Those checks are specifically supported by the Bambu Lab A2L AMS Combo manual. If the problem remains, use current A2L documentation for calibration or service instructions rather than copying menu paths or repair steps from another Bambu Lab model.

What a bad first layer looks like

The first layer is the foundation of the entire print. A problem at this stage usually appears before the model has enough height to hide it:

  • Lines do not stay on the plate: corners lift, individual strands move when the nozzle passes, or the whole outline comes loose.
  • Thin, wavy or dragged lines: material is being deposited unevenly or is being moved instead of forming a consistent track.
  • Visible gaps between lines: adjacent tracks are not meeting as expected.
  • The nozzle scrapes or presses into the surface: the nozzle makes contact with the plate or pushes through deposited material.

A Bambu Lab X2D manual lists mismatched build plates, dirty surfaces and bed leveling as possible causes of poor adhesion, describing poor adhesion as material that does not hold firmly and lines that can look thin, wavy or dragged. That is useful diagnostic context, but it is not an A2L procedure. The A2L-specific instructions available for this issue establish plate installation and cleaning, not a complete calibration sequence.

Stop safely when the nozzle is scraping

Do not let a scraping print continue while you investigate. A nozzle that is pressing into the plate can mark the surface, damage the nozzle, or spread a defect across the entire first layer. Cancel or pause the job using the printer’s normal controls, allow moving parts to stop, and inspect the plate before starting another print.

Look for a visible groove, raised patch, coating damage or a plate that is not sitting flat. Also check whether the nozzle has collected a blob of filament. Do not attempt to force the nozzle across the plate or hold the plate down while the machine is moving. If the plate appears physically damaged, set it aside until you have confirmed whether it remains suitable for the intended print.

Use this A2L-first troubleshooting order

The order matters. It starts with checks that are quick, reversible and explicitly covered by the A2L manual, then stops before unverified model-specific adjustments.

  1. Stop the print and inspect the contact. Treat scraping, pressing or repeated dragging as a stop condition rather than an adhesion problem to power through.
  2. Remove and reseat the build plate. Confirm that its edges align with the heatbed and that it is installed in the orientation intended for the A2L setup.
  3. Clean any surface that may have been touched. Wash it with hot water and detergent, then dry it completely before reinstalling it. Finger oils can remain even when a plate looks clean.
  4. Confirm plate suitability. Check that the installed plate is the one intended for the filament and print setup. A plate can be clean yet still be the wrong surface for the job.
  5. Run the print again only after the plate is secure and dry. Observe the first layer rather than walking away immediately; the aim is to determine whether the basic setup checks changed the symptom.
  6. Escalate unresolved cases using current A2L documentation. The available A2L material does not establish an exact calibration menu path, Z-offset procedure, flow adjustment, bed-tramming method or mechanical repair sequence.

Check the plate’s orientation and alignment

Install the correct face upward

The A2L manual instructs users to install the build plate in the correct orientation. A plate that is flipped, rotated or otherwise presented with the wrong face can change the distance and surface characteristics at the first layer. Do not assume that a plate that physically fits is installed correctly; compare its markings, edges and surface with the current A2L instructions.

Align every edge with the heatbed

Before a print, verify that the plate edges line up with the heatbed rather than sitting at an angle or stopping short of its locating features. A small misalignment can make one region of the plate behave differently from another. Remove the plate and reseat it if any edge looks offset, lifted or obstructed.

Inspect for anything trapped underneath

Dust, filament fragments or a small piece of debris under the plate can prevent it from sitting flat. If you find debris, remove the plate and clear the obstruction using a method approved for the A2L surface. Do not scrape aggressively or introduce a tool that could gouge the heatbed. The critical check is that the plate sits flat and reaches its locating points in the correct orientation.

Clean a touched plate correctly

Why fingerprints matter

The A2L manual recommends washing the surface with hot water and detergent if it has been touched, specifically to restore the best adhesion properties. Skin oils can create small areas where filament does not bond even though the plate appears spotless. Handling the plate by its edges after cleaning reduces the chance of immediately contaminating it again.

Cleaning sequence

  1. Remove the build plate from the printer.
  2. Wash the surface with hot water and detergent, following the plate’s care instructions.
  3. Rinse away detergent residue.
  4. Dry the surface fully before returning the plate to the heatbed.
  5. Reinstall it in the correct orientation and alignment.

Do not print on a visibly wet plate. Do not treat detergent washing as a substitute for checking plate compatibility or physical damage. If the plate has a coating defect, a clean surface may still fail in the damaged area.

Confirm plate and filament compatibility before changing hardware

A clean plate is not automatically the right plate. Different build-plate surfaces are intended for different materials and print conditions, so verify that the installed plate is the one specified for the A2L setup and the filament being used. The available A2L guidance supports confirming the intended plate; it does not identify a universal replacement plate or establish that buying a new one cures ordinary adhesion failures.

Diagnose the symptom without guessing at settings

Lines lift immediately

If the outline or first tracks detach as soon as the nozzle passes, begin with the surface and plate checks: stop, inspect, clean a touched plate, and verify orientation, alignment and compatibility. Do not jump directly to a Z-offset or flow change. The available A2L material does not verify those adjustments or provide safe values for them.

Lines are thin, wavy or dragged

Those appearances are consistent with the broad poor-adhesion description in Bambu Lab’s X2D manual, which identifies plate mismatch, contamination and leveling as possible causes. For an A2L, treat that list as a set of categories to investigate, not as permission to copy the X2D’s menu paths. First eliminate plate installation, cleanliness and compatibility. If the appearance persists, consult the current A2L instructions for the correct calibration route.

The nozzle scrapes across the first layer

Scraping is a safety issue before it is a quality issue. Stop the job, inspect whether the plate is correctly seated and check for damage or debris. Do not continue printing to see whether the layer improves, and do not manually force a Z adjustment based on an anecdote from another printer model. The exact A2L procedure for this symptom must come from current A2L documentation.

Only one region fails

A localized failure can point to contamination, a damaged patch or a plate that is not sitting flat. Compare the failed area with the plate’s edges and locating features. Remove and reseat the plate, clean it if it was touched, and inspect the surface under good lighting. If the same location fails after those checks, document the location and condition rather than repeatedly printing over it.

The entire first layer fails after a plate change

Recheck that the replacement or alternate plate is intended for the A2L and for the filament in the job. Physical fit alone does not establish compatibility. If the plate type is correct and the surface is clean, follow current A2L calibration guidance instead of importing instructions written for a different Bambu Lab model.

What is and is not established about A2L calibration

The available A2L manual excerpt covers correct plate installation and washing a touched surface. It does not establish a complete A2L first-layer troubleshooting flow, an exact calibration sequence, a menu location for leveling, a recommended Z-offset change, a flow adjustment, a bed-tramming procedure or a safe toolhead repair.

That boundary is important because menu names, sensor behavior and mechanical procedures can differ between printer models. A procedure documented for the X2D may be valid for the X2D and still be wrong for the A2L. Before changing calibration values or opening the machine, locate the current A2L user manual or Bambu Lab support guidance for the exact hardware and firmware in use. If that guidance is unavailable or the printer continues to scrape after the plate checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel with the printer’s exact model, plate type, filament and symptom.

When a replacement plate is justified

Replacement is a conditional decision, not the default cure for a first-layer problem. Consider one only after cleaning and compatibility checks show that the existing plate is damaged, warped, has a failing coating or is not the intended plate for the A2L setup.

No exact replacement SKU, price or availability is established here. Before ordering, verify all of the following against current manufacturer information:

  • The plate is explicitly compatible with the Bambu Lab A2L, not merely a similar-looking model.
  • Its surface is intended for the filament and print setup you use.
  • Its dimensions, locating features and orientation match the A2L heatbed.
  • The manufacturer’s care instructions match how you can maintain the surface.

If the existing plate is only dirty, purchasing another plate adds cost without addressing the contamination. If the printer is scraping because the plate is misaligned, a new plate may reproduce the same problem. Replacement makes sense when the evidence points to the plate itself and the new part’s A2L fit is confirmed.

Record what happened before escalating

A concise record helps separate a plate problem from a calibration or hardware problem. Note:

  • Which plate is installed and which surface is facing upward.
  • Whether the plate was washed with hot water and detergent and dried afterward.
  • Whether the plate edges were aligned with the heatbed.
  • The filament and print setup used.
  • Whether the failure affected the whole plate or one region.
  • Whether the nozzle scraped, pressed, dragged lines or simply failed to hold them.
  • Any visible groove, coating damage, warping or debris.

Include clear photographs of the plate surface and failed first layer when requesting help. Avoid changing several variables at once; otherwise you cannot tell which action altered the result.

A practical decision tree

Question If yes If no
Is the nozzle scraping or pressing into the plate? Stop immediately, inspect the plate and do not continue the job. Continue with the plate and surface checks.
Is the plate correctly oriented and aligned? Proceed to cleaning and compatibility checks. Remove and reinstall it according to the A2L manual.
Has the surface been touched or visibly contaminated? Wash with hot water and detergent, then dry completely. Inspect for damage and confirm the intended plate type.
Is the plate intended for this A2L setup and filament? Retry only after it is secure and dry. Verify the correct plate before printing or buying a replacement.
Does the problem remain after those checks? Use current A2L-specific calibration or service guidance. Keep the verified setup and monitor the first layer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Continuing a scraping print: this can turn a correctable setup error into plate or nozzle damage.
  • Cleaning only the visible spot: fingerprints and residue can cover more area than the obvious mark; wash the surface as recommended.
  • Assuming a physical fit proves compatibility: plate material, surface and intended filament still need confirmation.
  • Copying another model’s calibration menu: the X2D troubleshooting chapter is not evidence of an A2L menu path or procedure.
  • Changing several variables at once: it hides the cause and makes a later diagnosis harder.
  • Buying a plate before checking damage and alignment: a replacement cannot correct a plate that was simply installed incorrectly.
  • Manually changing Z offset, flow or mechanical hardware without verified A2L instructions: the available A2L sources do not substantiate those steps.

Bottom line for an A2L first-layer failure

Use a strict, low-risk sequence: stop if the nozzle scrapes, verify the plate’s orientation and alignment, wash a touched surface with hot water and detergent, dry it, and confirm that the plate is the intended one for the print. If those checks do not solve the problem, treat it as an A2L-specific calibration or service case. The available documentation does not support guessing at Z offsets, flow values, menu paths or mechanical repairs, and another Bambu Lab model’s instructions should not be substituted for current A2L guidance.
