Put the television or monitor in its Game/low-latency mode, then check the PS5’s Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output options for ALLM, 120 Hz Output, and VRR. Change one setting at a time and retest the same move, training-mode situation, or match.
First establish whether you have a delayed but stable picture or a failing video signal. A stable image with late button response points you toward display processing and refresh settings. A black screen, flicker, wrong resolution, or refresh rate requires a connection and compatibility check before you buy anything.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
“Input lag” is used for several different problems. Separating them prevents you from applying a video-output fix to a signal fault or replacing a controller when the display is adding processing time.
Delayed controls with a stable picture
You press a button, the character responds late, but the image remains continuous and correctly sized. This is the symptom most likely to improve when the display’s Game or low-latency mode bypasses extra picture processing. Refresh-related settings such as 120 Hz Output and VRR may also change how a compatible game feels, but their effect depends on the game, display, and selected visual mode.

Missing, flickering, or incorrect video
A black screen, intermittent picture, visible flicker, unexpectedly low resolution, or a refresh rate that is not what you selected is a signal problem first. Do not interpret this as proof of controller lag. Check the display, HDMI input, cable, firmware, and direct connection before changing gameplay settings repeatedly.
Delay that is not limited to one title
Use the console interface as a comparison point. Move through the PS5 menus and open a game you know well, then test the same action in the same location after each change. This comparison helps establish whether the symptom follows one game or the entire video chain; it does not identify a definitive cause by itself.
Use the display’s low-latency mode first
Turn on Game mode or the documented low-latency option
Open the television or monitor’s picture settings and select its Game, gaming, or low-latency preset. Menu names differ by display, so use the label in that model’s manual rather than assuming every screen has the same controls. Keep a note of the original picture preset so you can restore it if the change creates an unwanted image.
Game modes generally reduce the amount of picture processing between the HDMI input and the panel. They are the most reversible first step because they do not require a new cable, a console reset, or a change to every game. If the delay improves, leave the mode enabled for fighting games and decide separately whether its color, sharpness, or motion-processing trade-offs are acceptable.

Sony INZONE M10S: what “Low latency” does and does not promise
Sony’s support guidance for the INZONE M10S describes a Low latency option intended to reduce input-lag throttling in fast-paced games. Sony also states: “Even if you set Low latency to On, it is not possible to completely reduce the input lag.” That qualification applies to the monitor setting; it is a useful warning against expecting any display preset to eliminate all delay.
Configure PS5 video output in the right order
On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The choices below are conditional: a feature only helps when the connected display, HDMI path, and game support it.
| Setting | When it is relevant | What it changes | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALLM | The display supports automatic low-latency mode switching. | Requests that the display enter its low-latency mode when you play. | VRR output can still trigger low-latency mode even when ALLM is Off. To disable that behavior completely, VRR must also be Off. |
| 120 Hz Output | The title and display both support 120 Hz. | Allows 120 Hz video output for compatible games and screens. | It is not a universal fighting-game setting. PlayStation advises turning it Off if it causes video-output problems. |
| VRR | The display supports variable refresh rate and the game is compatible or has been tested by you. | Synchronizes refresh timing to reduce visual artifacts and can make gameplay feel smoother. | Results vary by game, display, and visual mode. Some older games need a patch for full optimization; some displays may flicker. |
| Test 1440p Output | The display accepts 1440p and you need to verify its reported modes. | Runs checks for 60 Hz, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR where supported. | It confirms reported compatibility; it does not measure controller-to-screen latency. |
ALLM: let the display switch modes automatically
If your television or monitor supports ALLM, enable it in the PS5 Video Output settings and in the display’s own HDMI or gaming controls when required. ALLM is a mode-switching request, not a millisecond guarantee. The practical test is whether the display actually enters its low-latency preset when a game starts.

PlayStation notes an important interaction: VRR output can still trigger the display’s low-latency mode even if the PS5’s ALLM setting is Off. If you need ALLM behavior disabled completely, turn VRR Off as well. This matters when troubleshooting a display that changes picture presets unexpectedly or when you are trying to compare two fixed configurations.

120 Hz Output: use it only when every link supports it
Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic or On only when the game and display support 120 Hz. The PS5 can provide 4K 120 Hz output through the HDMI 2.1 specification, but that capability does not make every game render at 120 Hz, and it does not itself state a measured input-lag reduction.
If enabling 120 Hz produces a black screen, unstable image, incorrect resolution, or another video-output fault, turn it Off and retest. A reliable 60 Hz picture is a better baseline than an unstable 120 Hz signal. Once the connection is stable, check the game’s own graphics or performance mode; the title may offer separate choices that determine whether 120 Hz is actually used.
VRR: test it per game and visual mode
PlayStation says VRR can reduce visual artifacts and that gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother, with scenes rendering more seamlessly, graphics appearing crisper, and input lag reduced. The same official guidance qualifies that statement: results may vary by game, display, and visual mode. Previously released games may require a patch for full VRR optimization.
Enable VRR on the PS5 and the display if both support it, then test the specific fighting game in the same stage, training setting, and visual mode. Watch for the symptoms that matter to you: steadier motion, visible flicker, brightness changes, or no perceptible difference. If the display flickers or the game behaves unexpectedly, disable VRR and compare again. PlayStation also provides Apply to Unsupported Games; leave that option Off when an unsupported title exhibits instability, and only test it when you can immediately reverse the change.

Run Test 1440p Output when the display reports the wrong mode
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, choose Test 1440p Output on a compatible display. The test can check 60 Hz, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR. Use its result to establish what the HDMI connection reports, not as a latency benchmark. A successful test does not prove that a particular fighting game is running at 120 Hz or that its controls have a specific response time.
Fix a missing signal, flicker, or wrong resolution before chasing lag
For a no-signal message, intermittent picture, flicker, or unexpectedly low refresh rate, follow this sequence. It addresses connection reliability rather than promising to reduce game-processing or network delay.
- Confirm display capability. Check the television or monitor’s specifications and manual for 4K 120 Hz support, the required HDMI input, and any input setting that enables its full bandwidth. Technology transitions can create compatibility issues even when both devices advertise HDMI 2.1.
- Update display firmware. Install the current firmware offered for the display, then restart both the display and PS5. Firmware can affect HDMI-handshake behavior and the modes the screen reports.
- Select the correct HDMI port. Use the input identified by the display manufacturer for HDMI 2.1 or 4K 120 Hz. Some screens have a mixture of ports with different capabilities; choosing a convenient port is not enough.
- Connect directly. Run the HDMI cable from the PS5 to the display without an AV receiver, switch, capture device, or other intermediary. Bypass accessories while diagnosing, then add them back one at a time if necessary.
- Start with the included PS5 cable. PlayStation recommends the cable supplied with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz. Do not buy a replacement merely because you are investigating lag; replace the cable only when the existing cable is missing, damaged, or unable to carry the mode you are trying to use.
- Check PS5 output settings. Review Resolution and Video Transfer Rate in the Video Output menu. If 120 Hz or a high-bandwidth mode causes the fault, return to a stable setting, then add features back individually.
- Retest after each physical change. Reconnect firmly, select the input again, and run Test 1440p Output where available. Keep the same game and scene so you do not confuse a signal improvement with a gameplay change.
An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz can solve an inadequate connection, but it cannot lower a game’s internal processing time, controller delay, or online response. Its role is to carry the required video mode reliably.

- Choose one test situation. Use a training-mode recording, a repeatable button sequence, or the same offline match setup. Keep the character, stage, camera distance, and visual mode unchanged.
- Record the baseline. Note the display preset, ALLM, 120 Hz Output, VRR, Resolution, and Video Transfer Rate. Also note whether the picture is stable and what refresh information the display reports.
- Change one setting. For example, enable Game mode while leaving every PS5 option unchanged. Do not enable ALLM, 120 Hz, and VRR simultaneously if your aim is to identify which change mattered.
- Repeat the exact action. Test several repetitions rather than relying on one missed input. Look for consistent response timing, not a single execution error.
- Keep or reverse the change. If the result is better and the picture remains stable, retain it for the next comparison. If it is worse or introduces flicker, restore the previous state.
- Move to the next setting. Test ALLM, 120 Hz Output, and VRR separately, then test the combination you actually intend to use. A setting that helps alone can behave differently when paired with another mode.
This procedure does not produce a laboratory millisecond measurement. The official guidance available for these settings documents capabilities and cautions, not a comparable reduction figure for PS5 fighting games.
Choose the next step by symptom
| What you observe | First action | Next action if unchanged | Stop or reverse when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controls feel late, picture is stable | Enable the display’s Game/low-latency mode. | Test ALLM, then 120 Hz or VRR individually if supported. | The picture flickers, changes mode unexpectedly, or the game becomes less consistent. |
| Black screen after enabling 120 Hz | Turn 120 Hz Output Off and restore a stable mode. | Check the display’s 4K/120 Hz support, firmware, HDMI 2.1 port, direct connection, and cable. | The signal remains unstable; keep the reliable output instead of forcing 120 Hz. |
| Flicker after enabling VRR | Turn VRR Off and compare in the same game. | Check display firmware and the title’s compatibility or patch status. | Flicker persists or the display is unusable. |
| Wrong resolution or refresh rate | Run Test 1440p Output and inspect Video Output settings. | Verify the correct HDMI input and remove intermediary devices. | The display cannot report the mode it claims to support. |
| Only one game feels delayed | Compare the title with another game and the PS5 interface. | Check that game’s current graphics, performance, and patch settings. | Do not generalize the result to every PS5 game. |
What these fixes cannot establish
There is no universal PS5 “lag switch”
PS5 Video Output contains useful controls, but no single setting guarantees lower fighting-game input delay on every television, monitor, title, or visual mode. ALLM requests a low-latency display preset; 120 Hz enables a compatible output mode; VRR changes refresh synchronization. They address different parts of the chain.
A refresh-rate specification is not a measured delay result
120 Hz describes how often a compatible display can receive or present frames. It is not a promise of a particular button-to-screen time. No comparable official measurement establishes a universal millisecond reduction for PS5 fighting games from 120 Hz, VRR, or a specific display model.
VRR is not automatically better
VRR may make many titles feel smoother and reduce visual artifacts, but the outcome varies. A game may lack full optimization, a visual mode may behave differently, or a display may flicker. Keep VRR only if the tested title and display produce the result you want.
A new controller is not the first evidence-backed step here
The platform guidance covered by this procedure does not provide a controller-latency comparison or prove that replacing a controller fixes the symptom. Establish the display and signal baseline first. If the problem remains after a stable, low-latency display configuration, investigate the individual game and controller separately rather than assuming a purchase will solve it.
When to stop changing settings
Stop when you have a stable picture, the display is in its documented low-latency mode, and one configuration consistently performs best in the same test situation. Write down that configuration so a firmware update, another console, or a different HDMI input does not silently change it.
If the display cannot sustain the resolution or refresh mode it advertises, keep the reliable output and contact the display manufacturer with the exact HDMI port, firmware version, cable, and PS5 settings. If only one title behaves differently while the interface and other games are consistent, consult that game’s current documentation and patch notes instead of treating the console as defective.
