Start with the least destructive checks: confirm your PC against Bethesda’s published requirements, update the graphics driver, disable Creations and other mods, verify the game files, and restore the launcher’s detected graphics settings. Then match the fix to the symptom—launch crash, in-game crash, black screen, low frame rate, or a simulation that runs too fast or too slowly. Record your Fallout 4 version, store, display refresh rate, installed Creations or mods, and the last change you made before the problem appeared.
The procedures below are for the PC version. Bethesda’s support instructions do not establish equivalent steps for consoles.

Check the facts before changing settings
A crash is not automatically a graphics-settings problem. First write down the details that can change the diagnosis:
Recommended Free Tools
- Fallout 4 version and platform: Steam, Microsoft Store, or another PC installation.
- Whether Creations, custom mods, or custom INI edits are installed.
- Your monitor’s refresh rate and whether a frame-rate cap is enabled.
- What changed immediately before the fault: a game update, driver update, new mod, display change, or settings edit.
- The exact symptom: failure before the menu, a crash during play, a black screen, stutter or low frame rate, or movement and physics that run too fast or too slowly.
Bethesda’s published PC requirements are an initial compatibility check, not a guarantee for current versions of Windows or every hardware combination.
#1 Best Overall
| Requirement level | Processor examples | Memory | Graphics examples | Storage | Operating system listed by Bethesda |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD Phenom II X4 945 class | 8 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB class | 30 GB free HDD space | 64-bit Windows 7, 8, or 10 |
| Recommended examples | Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD FX-9590 | 8 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 780 3 GB or AMD Radeon R9 290X 4 GB | 30 GB HDD space | Not specified separately on the requirements page |
Those operating-system examples are older. Treat them as Bethesda’s published reference, not as a current compatibility assurance for a newer Windows release. Meeting the list also does not prove that a particular mod collection, driver, overlay, or display mode will work.
What should I do if Fallout 4 is crashing?
Use this order for a launch crash or a crash during play. Each step is relatively reversible and gives you diagnostic information before you make deeper changes.
1. Test a clean, supported baseline
- Install the current graphics driver directly from your GPU manufacturer.
- Temporarily disable every Creation and remove custom mods. If you plan to reinstall the game, remove custom mods first; otherwise old files can remain and confuse a repair.
- Restart the PC and launch without changing any INI files or adding launch arguments.
If the clean launch works, re-enable Creations or mods one at a time. The first item that brings the crash back is more useful evidence than repeatedly reinstalling the whole game. Keep a simple list of what was disabled and the order in which it is restored; otherwise two changes can be reintroduced together and hide the trigger.
Use the same save, location, and action for each comparison when possible. A crash only in one heavily modified save is different evidence from a crash at the main menu, and a failure that appears only after several minutes may indicate a different conflict than an immediate launch failure.
2. Repair or verify the installation
Use the repair or verify-files command in the launcher that owns your installation. On Steam, also open the game’s properties and clear every launch option. Bethesda notes that some local configuration files may fail a normal verification check; do not manually alter those files merely because the checker reports them.
Bethesda also lists running both the game and its launcher as administrator as a targeted test. Try that only to diagnose a permissions problem. If it changes nothing, return to normal launching rather than permanently using elevated privileges. Elevated mode is not a general performance fix and can make it harder to compare normal and modified profiles.
3. Apply the Weapon Debris workaround when it fits
Bethesda documents a specific crash associated with Weapon Debris set to High or Ultra. In the Fallout 4 launcher, open Options > Advanced, set Weapon Debris to Medium or Off, save, and test again. This is a known, narrow issue—not an explanation for every crash. Bethesda described it as awaiting a future fix, so check the current support article and patch notes for its status before treating the workaround as permanent.

Do not lower every setting at once and then attribute success to Weapon Debris. Change that option alone first, reproduce the original crash, and record whether the result changes. If the game still fails with the setting at Medium or Off, return to the clean-baseline and file-verification steps rather than assuming another graphics option has the same documented defect.
4. Consider what changed after an update
If the crash began after a game, driver, or Creation update, record the platform and installed version before changing anything else. Bethesda’s August 18, 2026 patch notes list several version-specific fixes:
- The BA2 archive limit increased from 256 to 1024.
- A Steam Deck virtual-keyboard crash was fixed.
- A streaming-audio crash was fixed.
- A Microsoft Store Creations-menu crash when connectivity resumed was fixed.
These fixes do not establish one universal post-update solution. Check that your installation actually contains the relevant update before applying an old workaround aimed at an earlier build. A Steam Deck fix cannot be assumed to apply to a Windows Steam installation, and a Microsoft Store Creations-menu fix does not explain every crash on another store.
Black screen when launching Fallout 4 on PC
A black screen can occur before the game is visibly running, so treat it separately from an ordinary frame-rate problem. Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting checks are:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the computer meets the published minimum requirements and that the GPU driver is current.
- Disable Creations as a test.
- Check whether antivirus software is blocking the executable or launcher. Temporarily testing with protection paused can identify interference; restore protection immediately after the test and create a proper exception only if you understand the security implications.
- On a system with more than one GPU, verify that Fallout 4 is assigned to the intended high-performance adapter rather than an integrated GPU.
- Make sure the game and launcher are installed on the same drive.
These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed causes. If the screen remains black, undo one change at a time so you know which condition affected the result. Do not leave antivirus disabled as a routine workaround, and do not assume that moving files between drives will help unless the same-drive check points to an installation arrangement issue.
What do I do if Fallout 4 is running poorly on my PC?
For low frame rates, hitching, or stutter, begin with defaults and change only one variable at a time. Performance problems and crashes can coexist, but a smoother frame rate does not prove that a crash cause has been removed.
Restore the launcher’s detected settings
- Exit Fallout 4.
- Open the Fallout 4 launcher and let it detect your hardware again.
- Restore the video options it recommends instead of keeping a heavily customized profile.
- Launch and test the same location or activity that previously stuttered.
This establishes whether a configuration change caused the problem. Do not compare two different scenes and assume a settings change was responsible; use a repeatable save or route. If the launcher’s defaults are stable, add custom changes back individually so you know which setting creates the performance drop.

Reduce the highest-cost variables first
- Lower overall graphics quality.
- Reduce resolution if the GPU is overloaded.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, and other background applications while testing.
- Install the current driver for the GPU and reboot before retesting.
Lowering settings is a diagnostic step, not proof that you need new hardware. If the game becomes smooth after one change, raise other settings individually to find the point at which performance falls off. This approach costs nothing and is reversible; buying a graphics card, memory, display, or repair utility before identifying the limit can spend money without addressing a mod, driver, or configuration fault.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reset configuration files only when configuration is suspect
If you have edited INI files or imported a custom profile, reset the INI files to regenerate clean settings, then test before reapplying edits. Keep a backup of any custom files so you can restore individual changes later. INI edits can affect rendering, frame pacing, and simulation behavior; changing many entries at once removes the evidence needed to identify the culprit.
Do not edit a configuration file simply because a file-verification tool reports it. Bethesda specifically notes that local configuration files may not verify in the same way as installed game files. Reset them when your own edits or a damaged profile make configuration a credible suspect, and preserve the original copy before doing so.
Try a reversible display-mode comparison
Test borderless windowed mode, then compare it with fullscreen or ordinary windowed mode using the same resolution. A mode change can reveal a driver, overlay, or multi-monitor interaction without committing you to a hardware purchase. Keep whichever mode is stable for your setup, and restore the previous mode if the comparison makes no difference.
What do I do if everything is moving too fast in Fallout 4 on PC?
Characters, animations, and physics that run too fast or too slowly usually point to refresh-rate, frame-cap, driver, or Creation problems. Check these before replacing hardware.
Confirm the refresh rate and cap
Bethesda warns that uncapping the game through iPresentInterval can produce speed problems. Its support guidance documents iPresentInterval=1 for a 60 Hz display and iPresentInterval=2 for a 120 Hz display. For a monitor above 120 Hz, Bethesda suggests setting the desktop display to 120 Hz while playing.
- Set the operating system display refresh rate to 60 Hz or 120 Hz, matching the documented configuration for your setup.
- Use the game’s default frame-pacing behavior rather than an uncapped configuration.
- Test in the same save and location where the speed problem occurs.
- If you edit an INI file, back it up first and change only the relevant value.
These values come from Bethesda’s documented support configuration and may not cover every modern display or mod setup. If the symptom began after a driver change, update or roll back through the GPU manufacturer’s supported driver process. If it began after installing a Creation, disable that Creation and test again. A frame-rate symptom should not be treated as an ordinary low-FPS problem: lowering resolution alone may leave the underlying timing configuration unchanged.

Choose the fix by symptom and diagnostic value
| Symptom | First checks | Most reversible next step | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crash before the menu | Requirements, GPU driver, Creations or mods, launcher options | Clean launch with add-ons disabled, then verify files | General troubleshooting sequence; Weapon Debris applies only to the documented setting |
| Crash during play | Clean add-ons, verify files, graphics driver, recent update | Disable one Creation or mod at a time | Some crashes are version-specific; no single universal fix is documented |
| Black screen | GPU assignment, antivirus interference, same-drive installation | Test the intended high-performance GPU and disable add-ons | Checks are suggested causes, not guarantees |
| Low frame rate or stutter | Launcher defaults, driver, background software, resolution | Lower one setting or use borderless mode | Performance guidance favors defaults and incremental changes |
| Game speed too fast or slow | Refresh rate, frame cap, driver, Creations | Return to documented 60 Hz or 120 Hz behavior and back up INI files | Uncapped iPresentInterval can cause the symptom |
The best first fix is therefore not always the most powerful one. Disabling an add-on has high diagnostic value for a mod-related crash; restoring launcher defaults is more informative for a settings-related stutter; changing refresh behavior is specific to timing symptoms. A hardware upgrade addresses only a confirmed hardware limit and is the least reversible option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test without making the problem harder to diagnose
- Change one condition: for example, disable Creations, restore launcher defaults, or lower Weapon Debris.
- Restart the launcher or game when the change requires it.
- Repeat the same action that triggered the fault.
- Write down the result, including the game version, display refresh rate, and whether the test was on a clean profile.
- Only then make the next change.
Defaults, temporary add-on removal, lower settings, and borderless mode are easy to reverse and have high diagnostic value. Hardware replacement is difficult to reverse and should come only after the software and compatibility checks point to a hardware limit.

Fallout 4’s behavior depends on the installed build, store platform, driver, Creations, and local configuration. The August 18, 2026 update changed archive handling and fixed crashes on specific platforms, including Steam Deck and Microsoft Store Creations connectivity. If you copied a fix from an older guide, first compare its target version and platform with yours. Remove obsolete launch options and restore default INI values before deciding that the current build is broken.
If a clean, verified installation with current drivers still crashes, preserve your notes and provide support with the exact platform, version, crash timing, add-on status, display refresh rate, and the last change that preceded the fault. That information distinguishes a reproducible game defect from a local configuration conflict.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Changing several variables together: You may get a temporary improvement but lose the evidence showing which change mattered.
- Assuming every crash is Weapon Debris: Bethesda documents that setting only for the specific High or Ultra issue.
- Leaving mods in place during a reinstall: Custom files can survive and make a clean repair impossible to evaluate.
- Keeping unnecessary launch options: Steam launch arguments can cause crashes and should be cleared for a baseline test.
- Editing INI files without a backup: Restore a known copy or regenerate defaults before testing further.
- Using an old fix on a new build: Match the workaround to the store, platform, and installed version.
- Disabling security software permanently: Pause protection only for a controlled test, then restore it.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these steps on Xbox or PlayStation?
No. The procedures here summarize Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting guidance. The surfaced support instructions do not establish equivalent console steps.
What is the first thing to try when Fallout 4 crashes on launch?
Record your platform and version, update the GPU driver, disable Creations and custom mods, remove launch options, and test a clean launch. Then verify or repair the installation through its launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I set Weapon Debris to Off for every crash?
No. Bethesda ties the documented issue to Weapon Debris on High or Ultra. Try Medium or Off when that setting matches your symptom, but continue the general crash sequence for other failures.

Why did file verification report changed configuration files?
Bethesda notes that local configuration files may fail a normal verification check. Do not manually alter them solely because they are reported; reset or back them up only when your own edits make configuration a likely cause.
Will lowering resolution fix every performance problem?
No. Lower resolution can help when the GPU is overloaded, but stutter can also come from drivers, background software, custom settings, or add-ons. Restore launcher defaults and change one variable at a time.
What refresh rate should I use if the game runs too fast?
Bethesda documents 60 Hz with iPresentInterval=1 and 120 Hz with iPresentInterval=2. For displays above 120 Hz, its guidance suggests setting the desktop to 120 Hz while playing. Back up INI files before editing.
Does the August 18, 2026 update fix every Fallout 4 crash?
No. The notes list specific changes, including raising the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024, a Steam Deck virtual-keyboard fix, a streaming-audio fix, and a Microsoft Store Creations connectivity fix. They do not provide one universal crash solution.
Should I buy new hardware if Fallout 4 stutters?
Not as a first step. Compare your PC with Bethesda’s requirements, restore detected settings, update drivers, close background software, and test lower settings. Consider hardware only after those checks indicate a genuine compatibility or performance limit.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose Fallout 4 by symptom, version, and platform. Start with current drivers, a clean add-on-free launch, file verification, and launcher defaults; use the Weapon Debris, black-screen, and refresh-rate guidance only when it matches the observed problem. Change one reversible variable at a time and keep notes before considering hardware replacement.
