Most electric-bike problems fall into two groups: ordinary bicycle faults, such as a puncture or loose wheel, and electrical faults involving the battery, display, wiring, controller or motor. Start by switching the bike off and identifying which group fits the symptom. You can usually handle a correctly equipped tube puncture and a few accessible connection checks. Stop and use an authorized dealer or service center for a leaking or damaged battery, internal motor work, damaged wiring, critical error codes or a fault that returns after the permitted checks.
The exact procedure depends on the motor location, wheel design, tire system and electronics brand. A rear hub motor can make a simple flat substantially more involved than a front-wheel or mid-drive bike, and a Shimano or Bosch-based system may require different checks. Use your bike’s manual alongside the steps below.

First decide whether the problem is mechanical or electrical
Turn the bike off before inspecting it, remove the key if it has one, and keep the drive system from activating while you work. Then classify the symptom:

Do not open a battery, motor or controller. High-current cells and sealed electronics can remain hazardous even when the display is off.

Flat tire: repair it without creating a new problem
Identify the wheel and motor layout
First establish whether the puncture is at the front or rear and whether the motor is inside that wheel hub. A mid-drive motor leaves both wheel hubs conventional, while a hub-drive wheel may have a motor cable, torque arm, special washers and axle nuts. The order and orientation of those parts differ by design.
Park Tool notes that axle-nut sizes vary and that some axles require a wrench; do not assume a size from another e-bike. Its e-bike tool guidance is at Park Tool’s e-bike tool guide. Before removing a hub-motor wheel, read the bike maker’s instructions and photograph the washer and cable arrangement so you can restore it correctly.
- Switch the e-bike off and remove the battery if the manufacturer’s instructions call for that during wheel service.
- Release the relevant brake and derailleur or belt-drive hardware according to the bike manual.
- If a motor cable disconnects at the axle or frame, separate it only at the designated connector. Never pull on the wire itself.
- Support the wheel while loosening the axle nuts or quick-release. Keep track of every washer, spacer and torque arm.
- Remove the wheel and work in a clean place where small hardware cannot be lost.
What to carry for a tube-type tire
Useful basics are tire levers, a patch kit or correctly sized spare tube, and a pump. The replacement tube must match the tire’s size and valve type. Park Tool’s tire and tube instructions are at its tire and tube removal and installation guide.
A roadside tire kit does not necessarily include the metric wrench needed for a hub-motor axle. Confirm your bike’s tools before a long ride rather than discovering the mismatch beside the road.

Remove, inspect and repair the tube
- Deflate the tube fully. Push the tire bead into the center channel of the rim and use tire levers if the bead is tight. Avoid pinching the tube or damaging the rim tape.
- Pull out the tube and note the valve position relative to the tire label. Inflate it slightly and find the leak, then check the matching area inside the tire.
- Remove glass, wire, thorn or other debris from the casing. Also inspect the rim tape and valve hole; replacing only the tube will not fix a remaining sharp object.
- Patch the tube according to the patch manufacturer’s instructions, or install a tube with the exact tire size and valve type.
- Seat the tube without twists, then work the tire bead back over the rim. Check both sides to ensure no tube is trapped under the bead.
- Inflate to the pressure specified on the tire sidewall and in the bicycle maker’s instructions. There is no single safe pressure value for every e-bike.
Tubeless tires require a different repair method involving sealant, plugs and sometimes an air compressor. Do not install a tube or use a tubeless plug without confirming what your rim and tire system allow.
Reinstall the wheel and test the brakes
Reinstall every washer, torque arm, spacer and axle nut in the original order, reconnecting a hub-motor cable only at its intended connector. Confirm that the wheel is fully seated and secure before riding.
With hydraulic disc brakes, never squeeze the brake lever while the wheel is out. The pads can close and make wheel installation difficult; this warning is covered in Park Tool’s wheel removal and installation guide.

“My bicycle does not turn on”
A dead display does not prove that the battery itself has failed. Begin with external, low-risk checks and use the exact manual for your model. Do not bridge contacts, bypass a lock or open the battery case.
Accessible checks for a Bosch-equipped Tern system
Tern’s Bosch-specific troubleshooting sequence is not a universal procedure for every brand. For the systems covered in Tern’s Bosch e-bike troubleshooting guide:
- Check that the battery is fully seated and locked in its mount. If the battery is removable, remove and reinstall it as described by Tern.
- Check the charge indication and inspect visible battery and mount connectors for contamination or damage. Do not scrape, bend or force contacts.
- Check that the display is seated correctly in its mount and that its contacts are clean and undamaged.
- Inspect external display or controller wires for looseness, cuts, crushing or a connector that has backed out. Do not open a cable sheath or motor housing.
- If an error code appears, use the Bosch error-code information linked from the system documentation rather than guessing at a reset.
If the Tern still will not start after those checks, Tern directs riders to an authorized dealer or Bosch service center. A loose-looking connection that will not reseat easily is a service issue, not a reason to apply force.

What to do on a Shimano system
Shimano’s FAQ includes the symptom “My bicycle does not turn on” and other power-assistance faults. Check the displayed warning or error code and the system’s status in the applicable Shimano app or display. The FAQ is at Shimano’s e-bike support FAQ.

If Shimano system lock is engaged, assistance and electronic shifting are restricted. Disengage the lock through the permitted app or system control before treating the bike as a hardware failure. For the listed “Power assistance is not supplied to drive unit” problem, Shimano suggests removing the battery, waiting a few seconds and reinstalling it. Follow the manual for your exact battery, especially with an integrated battery, and contact the place of purchase or distributor if the fault remains.
Do not apply Shimano’s battery-removal sequence to another manufacturer’s system unless that manufacturer gives the same instruction. Battery mounts, locks and restart procedures are not interchangeable.

Intermittent assistance can result from a system lock, a warning state, a battery that is not seated, an external connector problem or a fault that needs diagnostic equipment. Treat a sudden cut-out or surging response as a safety issue: stop in a safe place, switch the system off and inspect only what the manual identifies as user-accessible.

Check the status before touching hardware
- Read the display for a warning or error code and record the exact code before switching off.
- Confirm that the selected assist mode is not “off” and that a system lock has not been enabled.
- Check battery seating and charge indication.
- Look for a visibly loose or damaged external display, controller or sensor wire. Do not unplug sealed connectors repeatedly or pull by the cable.
If the fault appears only under load, returns after a restart or is accompanied by a critical warning, arrange authorized service. A temporary return to normal operation does not prove that the underlying problem is safe to ignore.

“Power assistance is not supplied to drive unit”
This wording describes a specific Shimano FAQ symptom, but the same rider experience can have different causes on another system. On Shimano equipment, first check the warning or error status and whether system lock is restricting assistance. If the bike uses a removable battery, Shimano’s listed step is to remove it, wait a few seconds and reinstall it. If assistance is still absent, stop troubleshooting at the external level and contact the place of purchase or distributor, particularly when the battery is integrated.
For a Bosch-equipped Tern, use Tern’s checks for battery seating, display seating, contacts, external wiring and error information instead. The two procedures should not be blended into a generic reset routine.
Battery warning signs: when to stop immediately
Stop using and charging a battery that leaks, has an unusual odor or shows visible damage. Shimano advises moving a leaking or abnormally smelling battery away from flammable materials only if you can do so safely, then contacting the place of purchase. - Do not continue riding or charging it to “see whether it recovers.”
- Keep people and combustible materials away from smoke, flames or a rapidly heating pack.
- For smoke or fire, follow the manufacturer’s emergency instructions and contact local emergency services.
A battery can be unsafe even when it still powers the display. Treat a damaged case, liquid, strong solvent-like smell, hissing or unusual heat as a reason to stop, not as a normal charging condition.
When a dealer or service center is the right fix
Use authorized service for any internal battery or motor fault, damaged electrical harness, recurring error, critical warning or problem that remains after the manufacturer’s permitted checks. Specialist diagnostics may be required to test the controller, speed sensor, battery management system or motor without exposing you to live high-current components.
Before contacting service, record the bike model, drive-system brand and model, battery type, exact display message or code, when the failure occurs, and what safe checks you performed. Photographing a connector or error screen can help the technician, but do not disassemble parts to obtain a better view.

Preventive checks that reduce roadside failures
- Carry tire levers, a pump, patches or a correctly sized tube, and the axle tools your particular bike requires.
- Check tire condition, valve security and inflation before a ride using the pressure range printed for that tire and bike.
- Keep battery and display contacts dry and free of visible contamination; never force a connector.
- Learn how your bike indicates a system lock and how to read its error display before you need it.
- Store and charge the battery exactly as the manufacturer specifies, away from damage and obvious heat sources.
- After any wheel installation, verify axle security, wheel seating and brake operation at low speed before returning to traffic.
Quick stop-or-continue checklist
- Continue cautiously: a confirmed tube puncture repaired with the correct parts, a secure wheel, normal brake operation and no electrical warning.
- Pause and consult the manual: a hub-motor wheel with unfamiliar axle hardware, a displayed code, a system lock or a connector that is not clearly user-accessible.
- Stop and obtain service: a leaking, damaged, hot or unusual-smelling battery; smoke or fire; damaged wiring; internal motor or battery work; a critical error; or repeated loss of assistance after the approved checks.
