Older PC games usually fail for one of three reasons: a Windows program is meeting changed operating-system behavior, a DOS game needs an MS-DOS-compatible runtime, or an adventure game requires a supported ScummVM configuration. Identify the exact release and symptom first, then use the matching fix. A single compatibility checkbox is not a universal repair.
Start by identifying the game, release and failure
Write down the exact title, release format and patch level before changing anything. A boxed disc, a later digital re-release and a community-patched executable may behave differently. Also record whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, how the game was installed, and the first visible failure.

- It will not install or immediately closes.
- It opens to a black screen, wrong colors or an unusable resolution.
- Full-screen switching causes a crash, flicker or artifacts.
- Gameplay is abnormally fast or slow.
- Music, effects or all sound are missing.
- The game starts but reports a missing file or library.
These details determine the correct runtime. Native Windows troubleshooting, DOSBox and ScummVM solve different classes of problem; substituting one for another can waste time.
Use this quick classification
| What you have | First path | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| A Windows executable from a 1990s or 2000s game | Publisher update, Windows compatibility troubleshooting and driver updates | The original executable and any official patch or compatibility note |
| A game designed for MS-DOS | DOSBox | The game folder and its documented EXE, BAT or COM launcher |
| An adventure game listed by ScummVM | ScummVM | The exact supported title/version and the original game data files |
| A title outside ScummVM’s compatibility list | Use its native Windows or DOS path | ScummVM is not a general-purpose emulator for unsupported games |
Run the low-risk checks first
- Look for a publisher update. Search the publisher’s support page for a patch, Windows compatibility note or a release-specific workaround. Microsoft recommends checking for an update before using its compatibility troubleshooter.
- Install current device-driver updates. If the game launches with graphical glitches or another minor fault, use Windows Update to check device drivers. Do not assume a new driver will repair every old-game problem, but it is a safer first change than downloading files from an unknown site.
- Change one setting at a time. Keep a note of the original value and test the same save or opening scene after each change. Several simultaneous changes make it impossible to identify which one helped.
- Keep the original installer and saves. Copy save files and the unmodified game folder before applying a patch or editing configuration files.
Fix an older native Windows game
Use Program Compatibility Troubleshooter as a diagnostic
On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Select the game, follow the prompts and test the suggested settings. The tool is designed to target particular application behaviors, not to guarantee that every legacy title will run.

Windows compatibility options can address cases such as legacy color modes, DirectX version detection and display-drawing behavior. Those are different failure classes, so the option that helps one game may do nothing for another. If the troubleshooter reports that a setting was applied, retest the game before adding another workaround.
Test executable properties deliberately
You can test compatibility settings on the game’s actual executable rather than a desktop shortcut. Open the executable’s properties, choose the compatibility controls, apply one relevant setting and launch the program directly. Do not treat the compatibility checkbox as a cure for missing files, damaged installation data or incorrect colors. PCGamingWiki’s compatibility index specifically notes that compatibility mode does not solve every such problem.
Use the executable that the game really launches. A launcher and the game binary can have different properties, so applying a setting to the wrong file produces no useful result. If a patch replaces the executable, check the properties again.
Do not download random DLL files
A missing-DLL message is an installation or dependency problem, not proof that a compatibility mode is needed. The cited compatibility guidance does not endorse downloading DLLs from third-party “fix” sites. Verify the installation, use an official game patch or installer component when one exists, and consult the title’s documented requirements. A DLL from an unknown source can be the wrong version or contain unwanted software.
Use DOSBox for DOS games
DOSBox recreates an MS-DOS-compatible environment, including sound, input and graphics support, so many classic DOS games can run without modifying their original files. It is the appropriate first runtime when the game was built for DOS rather than for modern Windows.

Prepare a simple game folder
Create a folder whose path is easy to type, such as C:GamesTITLE, and copy the game’s installed DOS files into it. Preserve the original directory structure. If you are working from a disc image or installer, follow the game’s documentation to install it into that folder rather than copying only the visible launcher.
Mount and launch the game
- Install a maintained DOSBox release and open it.
- Mount the folder containing your DOS games as a DOS drive. For example, if the host folder is
C:Games, entermount c C:Games. - Switch to the mounted drive with
c:. - Change to the title’s directory, for example
cd TITLE. - Start the file named in the game’s documentation, such as
GAME.EXE,START.BATor a.COMprogram. Do not guess when the manual identifies a specific launcher.
The exact mount command depends on where you stored the files. Use a path that contains only the folder you intend to expose to the emulated environment; mounting an entire system drive is unnecessary and increases the chance of changing the wrong files.

DOSBox’s own setup guidance warns that not every game runs smoothly. If the title is too fast, too slow or unstable, use the game’s documented DOSBox notes and adjust the emulator’s performance controls one change at a time. A setting that fixes one title can make another unusable because games were written for different hardware timings.
Check file attributes if the game cannot save settings, create a configuration file or write saved games. DOSBox documentation notes that read-only files can cause launch, settings or save problems. On the host system, inspect the affected files and remove the read-only attribute when you are certain the files should be writable. Keep a backup before changing attributes.
The setup example in older DOSBox documentation is not a statement about the newest release. Follow the current project documentation for installation, configuration and supported platforms, then apply the title’s own instructions.

Use ScummVM only for supported adventure games
ScummVM is a compatibility layer for games on its supported list, not a universal solution for every old adventure game. Check the current compatibility list for the exact title and version before moving files or changing settings. Support can differ by game edition and by the data files supplied with it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdd the required game data
- Confirm the title and version in ScummVM’s compatibility list.
- Install or unpack the original game so that its data files are available.
- In ScummVM, choose the option to add a game and point it at the folder containing those data files.
- Use the game’s compatibility notes to select any required engine or sound settings.
- Launch the detected game and test a reproducible scene, such as the opening sequence.
ScummVM’s FAQ explains that the original setup executable is generally not the data it needs. Pointing ScummVM at an installer instead of the installed data folder commonly results in a title that is not detected or that crashes at startup.
Investigate sound and crashes by title
If sound is absent, first check whether sound is supported for that particular game and version. There is no universal ScummVM audio switch that fixes every title. For crashes, check the title’s known issues and report a reproducible problem with the game version and platform details when the project requests a bug report. The FAQ is an older page, so verify current support information in the project’s present compatibility list and documentation.
Diagnose display problems by their symptom
“Black screen,” “wrong colors,” “bad scaling” and “visual artifacts” are not interchangeable. Identify the exact behavior before choosing a setting.
| Symptom | Likely first check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen while audio continues | Test the game’s display mode and Windows compatibility display-drawing options; try a windowed launch if the title documents one | That a new monitor or cable is required |
| Incorrect or distorted colors | Test legacy color-mode compatibility options and the title’s own configuration | That generic compatibility mode fixes color handling |
| Unusable resolution or stretched image | Separate the game’s native resolution from Windows scaling and any wrapper or emulator setting | That every widescreen or scaling option is safe for every title |
| Flicker or artifacts in a window | Check driver updates and title-specific display notes | That Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization applies to all old games |
Windows legacy color and drawing options
Microsoft documents targeted compatibility fixes for legacy 8-bit and 16-bit color behavior and for display-drawing problems. Apply the option that matches the observed symptom, then test the same scene. If the colors remain wrong, record that result rather than stacking unrelated modes.

Windows 11 windowed-game optimization
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting is specifically for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window modes. It is not a general “old game compatibility” switch and does not target DOS titles or every older renderer.
For a supported app, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, open its options and switch the optimization setting off or on for that app. Restart the game after changing it. If the title uses a different graphics API or exclusive full-screen mode, this control may have no effect.
Scaling and full-screen transitions
Test windowed mode and full-screen mode separately. A game that draws correctly in a window but turns black when switching to full screen has a mode-transition problem, not necessarily a missing game file. Keep the mode that is stable while you consult the game’s release-specific notes. Avoid assuming that a high-resolution desktop, a modern aspect ratio or an automatic scaling option is compatible with the original renderer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle speed, sound and input as separate problems
Gameplay that is too fast or too slow
For DOS games, investigate DOSBox performance controls using the game’s documentation. Older games often depend on timing assumptions that differ between titles, so there is no single speed value that can be recommended for all of them. Change one control, replay the same section and restore the previous value if behavior worsens.
For native Windows games, first confirm that the symptom is reproducible and not caused by a cutscene, loading screen or a save with corrupted state. Check the publisher’s patch notes and title-specific compatibility guidance before applying broad system changes.

Missing music or effects
On DOSBox, use the game’s documented sound setup and its emulator notes; some titles require a particular emulated device selection. On ScummVM, verify that the title and version support the sound feature you expect. On a native Windows game, update device drivers through Windows Update when the game launches with glitches, then consult the release’s own requirements.
Do not infer that a sound failure proves the speakers, controller, cable or adapter is defective. The available compatibility guidance does not establish any physical hardware purchase as a general repair.
Use a symptom-first decision path
- Identify the runtime. Native Windows executable: use Windows compatibility steps. DOS executable: use DOSBox. Supported adventure title: use ScummVM. If the title is not on ScummVM’s list, choose its native path.
- Classify the failure. Installation and launch failures need release updates and dependency checks; display failures need display-specific settings; speed and sound failures need runtime- or title-specific controls.
- Apply the smallest change. Start with a publisher patch, the Windows troubleshooter or the documented emulator setup before experimenting with multiple compatibility modes.
- Retest consistently. Use the same executable, save and scene so that you can compare results.
- Roll back unsuccessful changes. Remove the setting you just tested, restore the backed-up folder and return to the title’s documented configuration.
- Escalate with useful details. Record the exact release, patch level, Windows version, runtime version, settings changed and reproducible steps. Those details are essential when consulting a project issue tracker or a game-specific compatibility page.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Applying compatibility mode to a shortcut while the launcher starts a different executable.
- Using DOSBox for a Windows game or ScummVM for a title outside its supported list.
- Pointing ScummVM at the original installer instead of the required data files.
- Changing color, scaling, full-screen and performance settings simultaneously.
- Downloading an arbitrary DLL from a third-party site to silence an error message.
- Assuming a black screen, missing sound and incorrect colors have the same cause.
- Buying a controller, cable, adapter or newer PC before software causes have been isolated.
- Following an old setup example as though it described the current DOSBox or ScummVM release.
What a successful fix looks like
A reliable repair leaves you with a repeatable launch method and a documented setting, not a pile of unexplained tweaks. Keep the exact executable or emulator profile that works, note the Windows version and release of the game, and preserve a clean copy of the original files. If an update or compatibility option fixes one symptom but introduces another, prefer the title-specific patch or runtime documented for that release.
The practical order is therefore: identify the game and symptom, check the publisher’s update, use Microsoft’s Windows tools for a native Windows title, use DOSBox for DOS software, use ScummVM only when the title is supported with the correct data, and treat display, speed and sound as separate diagnoses. This approach narrows the failure before you make changes and avoids unsupported universal cures.
