Check the game’s official service-status page before changing router settings, record the exact error message, verify platform and privacy settings, then test the local connection. Only after those checks should you follow the title’s own NAT, firewall or port instructions.
The steps below use Destiny 2, Warframe, Borderlands and The Division 2 as examples. Their rules and network requirements are not interchangeable, so use the support page for the exact game and platform you are playing.

Start with the fastest diagnosis
Use this order. It prevents a publisher outage from being mistaken for a bad router and avoids risky network changes that cannot fix an account or matchmaking restriction.

- Write down the exact error code or warning. Do this before restarting so you can use the correct support article.
- Confirm player eligibility. Check that everyone is online, running a supported version, allowed to receive invites, and using compatible cross-play and privacy settings.
- Check the activity’s matchmaking rules. Some games deliberately use different pools for competitive and noncompetitive activities, or for different platforms.
- Test the local link. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, stop competing downloads or streams, and restart the modem and router only when the game’s guidance recommends it.
- Apply advanced NAT or firewall steps only from the game’s guide. Port numbers and router requirements vary by title, platform and network design.

Why can’t I join my friend in co-op?
A failed invite does not automatically mean your internet connection is broken. Co-op joining depends on the game’s account system, platform support, cross-play state, privacy rules, activity eligibility and sometimes the order in which players form a fireteam.

Check that both players are really eligible
- Confirm that both accounts show as online and that neither player is in a mode that blocks invitations.
- Check that both installations are fully updated and that the game supports the two platforms in the current release.
- Verify that neither account has parental, privacy or communication restrictions that block friends or group invites.
- Confirm that the invite is being sent to the correct account identity. Some games display platform-specific names, suffixes or linked-account identifiers.
- Have both players return to a supported social or orbit screen before retrying. A player loading into an incompatible activity can appear online while still being unable to accept a fireteam invitation.
Cross-play can change who is allowed to join
Destiny 2 demonstrates why a game’s cross-play switch must be checked on every account. Bungie documents that Xbox and PlayStation players who disable cross-play cannot join a fireteam with someone whose cross-play is enabled, even when both people are using the same console family. A setting that looks harmless can therefore block the invite before a network connection is attempted.
Destiny 2 also uses activity-dependent pools. Bungie’s cross-play guidance says competitive matchmaking separates console and PC pools, while noncompetitive activities match across available platforms. If a console player joins a fireteam containing a PC player, the competitive pool can change. A queue that works in a cooperative activity may therefore fail, behave differently or take longer in a competitive one. These are Destiny 2 rules, not a standard for every looter shooter.
Use the game’s documented invite flow
Warframe’s cross-platform guide is an example of a title where cross-platform play enables squad joining and public matchmaking across supported platforms, while account identity details still matter. Follow the exact in-game search and invite procedure for your title rather than assuming that a console friend list, a platform overlay or a publisher account list is authoritative.

Why is matchmaking taking so long?
A long queue can be a healthy but small matchmaking pool, an activity rule, a cross-play mismatch, a service incident or a local connection that cannot complete the handshake. Do not infer a server failure from queue length alone.

Check whether the activity is intentionally restricted
Read the game’s current description for the activity and its platform rules. Competitive modes may separate console and PC players, while cooperative or noncompetitive modes may use a wider cross-platform pool. Events, ranked playlists, newly released content and region-limited activities can also have fewer eligible players. If the queue is fast in one activity but consistently slow in another, the difference may be intentional.
Compare solo and party queues
Leave the party and try the same activity alone, then try again as a party. If solo matchmaking succeeds but the party queue does not, compare every member’s platform, cross-play state, version, region and account restrictions. If both solo and party queues fail, return to service-status and network checks rather than repeatedly recreating the fireteam.
Check service reports before changing settings
When a publisher reports maintenance or an outage, a queue can remain empty because the matchmaking service is unavailable even if the game client launches normally. Ubisoft’s MIKE-01 guidance for The Division 2 defines the code as a lost connection to the game servers and directs players to check maintenance or an outage first. Wait for the service to recover; changing your router cannot repair a server-side incident.
Read the error before you restart anything
Capture the exact capitalization, punctuation and code, along with the game mode, platform and time. A screenshot is useful when the message disappears. Record whether the problem affects one friend, the whole party, every game on the network or only one device.
What common messages can and cannot tell you
“Network not responding” is not proof that your router is defective. Warframe describes that warning as an unstable or slow path between the device and Warframe servers. The same words in another game could represent a different condition. Use the game’s own definition.

The Division 2’s MIKE-01 is specifically associated with a lost server connection, so its first remedy is a service check. Destiny 2’s support documentation separates multiple disconnection codes and uses them to track different kinds of connection loss. These examples show why copying a fix for one code to another title is unreliable.
Restart only as a troubleshooting attempt
For some Destiny 2 server and connection issues, Bungie suggests clearing a console or download cache and power-cycling the modem or router among possible steps. Those actions can clear a transient state, but they are not guaranteed cures and should not replace an outage check or an eligibility check.
Test the local connection without guessing
Try Ethernet as a controlled comparison
If you normally play over Wi-Fi, connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet when practical and repeat the same activity. Bungie recommends wired play because Wi-Fi can introduce signal-strength and stability problems. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that buying a cable will fix co-op.
An Ethernet test cannot resolve a publisher outage, an account restriction, a cross-play mismatch or an ISP fault upstream of your home. If the wired and wireless results are identical, look beyond radio interference.
Remove competing traffic temporarily
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads and other high-bandwidth activity on the network. Ask other users to stop streaming briefly while you test. Bungie’s Destiny guidance includes checking for competing network use because congestion and packet loss can make a stable-looking connection fail during matchmaking or a fireteam handshake.

Look for a wider network problem
Test another online game or a streaming service on the same connection. If several services fail, the problem is probably not specific to one looter shooter. Warframe’s support guidance recommends contacting the ISP when similar trouble affects other games or streaming services. Note the time, affected devices and whether a wired connection changes the result before contacting the ISP.
Restart equipment in a sensible order
- Close the game and any downloads.
- Power-cycle the modem and router according to their manufacturer’s instructions; wait for the connection to return fully.
- Restart the gaming device and launch the game again.
- Retest the same activity and record whether the error changed.
A restart is useful for a temporary modem, router or session state. It will not change a strict NAT caused by an upstream carrier network, and it will not bring an offline publisher service back.

Strict NAT means the router or an upstream network limits which peers can establish connections. Gearbox’s Borderlands network guidance describes strict NAT as limiting the peers a player can connect to. That makes NAT a plausible cause for some peer-to-peer co-op failures, but it is not a universal explanation for every matchmaking error.
Start with the least disruptive checks
- Install current firmware for the modem and router if the manufacturer provides an update.
- Reboot the equipment and confirm that the gaming device is connected to the intended router, not an isolated guest network.
- Enable the automatic connection method recommended by the game’s official guide, such as UPnP, only if your router and platform support it.
- Check the platform’s displayed NAT type after the change, then test the game again.
Router menus and labels vary. A setting that improves one platform can interfere with another, especially when more than one console is active.

Use port forwarding only for the exact game and platform
Port forwarding is not a generic looter-shooter recipe. Use only port numbers and protocols published by the game’s support page for your platform and edition. Keep a written record of the original router settings so you can undo a change.

Do not make DMZ mode or firewall disabling a routine step. Those changes increase network exposure and are not first-line fixes. If the official guide does not require them, leave them disabled.
Consider upstream or carrier-grade NAT
If the router reports an open configuration but the platform still shows strict NAT, the ISP may be placing your connection behind carrier-grade or another upstream NAT. Gearbox identifies ISP NAT as a possible source of strict-NAT behavior. Ask the ISP whether it can diagnose or change that condition; a setting inside your home router cannot always overcome it.
When several devices share one network
Multiple consoles or computers can expose game-specific conflicts that do not appear with one device. Warframe documents a particular same-network UDP port conflict and provides title-specific port-change steps. Do not copy those steps to another game or invent substitute port values. Open the Warframe support article for the current procedure, apply it only to the affected devices, and retest one device at a time.
If every device fails in the same title while other games work, collect the title, platform, number of devices, account identities and exact warning before contacting support. If every online service fails across devices, prioritize the router, modem and ISP investigation instead.
Game-specific examples and what they teach

A safe escalation path
Escalate after you have completed the service, eligibility and basic local-network checks, or immediately when the official support page asks for logs.
- Open the publisher’s service-status and maintenance page and note whether an incident is active.
- Open the support page for the exact game, platform and error code.
- Confirm account, privacy, invite and cross-play settings for every player.
- Test the activity alone and in a party, noting which combination fails.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, pause competing traffic and record the result.
- Restart the game device and network equipment if the official guide includes that step.
- Apply only documented UPnP, NAT or port changes, and keep a rollback record.
- Contact the publisher or ISP with the error text, timestamps, platform, region, connection type, number of affected devices and steps already attempted.
Support can act faster when you distinguish “the service was offline,” “only one friend could not join,” and “every game failed on this network.” Avoid reporting a guessed cause as a fact; provide the observed symptom and the exact code.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly restart the router during a confirmed outage.
- Do not disable cross-play on one account and leave it enabled on another while testing a cross-platform party.
- Do not treat a long queue as proof that matchmaking is broken without checking activity and platform rules.
- Do not paste port numbers from a different game into your router.
- Do not enable DMZ or disable the firewall as a casual first step.
- Do not assume a new Ethernet cable, router or network utility can fix an account restriction or publisher-side failure.
Live-service status, platform policies, game versions, matchmaking rules, router firmware and ISP conditions change. Recheck the official support page whenever the title updates or its error message changes.
