How to Fix Common AI Tool-Calling Errors

Most AI tool-calling failures are protocol failures, not mysterious model behavior. A reliable fix is to trace the complete exchange—tool declaration, model-produced call, application execution, tool result, and follow-up context—then correct the first boundary that breaks. Log the raw request and response, classify the error, validate the schema, preserve call identifiers and provider context, and retry only transient transport failures.

What an AI tool-calling error actually is

A tool call is an exchange between a model and your application. The model does not execute your function directly. It selects a declared tool and emits structured arguments; your code validates and runs those arguments; your code then sends a result linked to the original call; the model uses that result in the next response. An error at any boundary can look like a model mistake.

Think of the exchange as a contract with five checkpoints:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Declaration: the tool name, description, parameters, and schema must be accepted by the provider.
  2. Model output: the selected function and arguments must be valid, declared, and appropriate for the request.
  3. Application execution: your code must find the function, validate inputs, enforce authorization, and handle side effects.
  4. Tool result: the result must use the original call identifier and the provider’s required message envelope.
  5. Follow-up context: the conversation must retain any required assistant, thinking, signature, or response parts.

Debugging becomes much faster when you identify the first failed checkpoint instead of changing the prompt at random.

Start with a disciplined diagnostic sequence

1. Capture the complete exchange

Record the provider, model, request ID, conversation or response ID, tool declarations, raw model response, application validation error, execution log, and tool-result message. Redact secrets, credentials, personal data, and sensitive tool arguments before sending logs to a third party. Keep both the parsed representation and the original wire payload; a serializer can hide the character or field that caused a 400.

For each call, log a correlation record containing the tool name, call ID, parent response ID, start and finish times, validation outcome, authorization outcome, execution outcome, and retry count. Never log only the natural-language answer. The structured call and result are what let you reconstruct the failure.

2. Classify the failure before changing code

Failure class Typical symptoms First action
Client-side validation (400) Invalid schema, unknown field, malformed message, unsupported parameter, or invalid continuation. Read the provider’s error path and compare the exact payload with the documented format. Do not retry unchanged.
Authentication or permission (401/403) Invalid key, missing scope, disabled project, or a tool operation the caller cannot perform. Check credentials, project, scopes, and application authorization. Do not retry until the cause is corrected.
Billing or quota (402 or quota-related response) Payment, spending limit, or quota rejection. Resolve the account or quota issue. A transport retry will not fix it.
Malformed or undeclared call Unknown function, invalid JSON arguments, unexpected tool call, or missing required argument. Validate declarations and the model response before execution; tighten names, descriptions, and schemas.
Tool execution error The call is valid, but your database, HTTP service, file operation, or business rule fails. Return a compact structured error tied to the call ID and decide whether the model can recover.
Context or signature error A continuation is rejected after a tool result, often after messages or hidden response parts were edited. Replay the provider-required assistant, thinking, signature, and result blocks exactly.
Transient transport (408, 429, 5xx) Timeout, rate limit, temporary overload, or service-unavailable response. Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter, an idempotency strategy, and a maximum attempt count.

3. Reproduce the smallest failing request

Remove unrelated tools, conversation turns, and optional fields until the same error occurs with one declaration and one call. A minimal reproduction distinguishes a schema problem from a context-length, parallelism, or application-state problem. Once fixed, add components back one at a time.

Fix the tool declaration before blaming the model

OpenAI function declarations in strict mode

Strict mode makes the model’s arguments conform to the declared schema, but the schema itself must meet strict requirements. Set additionalProperties to false. Mark every property as required. If a value is logically optional, keep the property required and allow null in its type. A declaration that relies on omitted optional properties can be rejected or can produce arguments your validator does not expect.

{
  "type": "function",
  "name": "lookup_order",
  "description": "Find one order by its customer-visible order number.",
  "strict": true,
  "parameters": {
    "type": "object",
    "properties": {
      "order_number": {"type": "string"},
      "include_items": {"type": ["boolean", "null"]}
    },
    "required": ["order_number", "include_items"],
    "additionalProperties": false
  }
}

Use one canonical schema in three places: the provider declaration, application validation, and documentation or tests. If those copies drift, a call can pass the provider and fail your application. OpenAI’s function-calling documentation recommends always enabling strict mode when the schema fits its supported subset.

Gemini schema limits

Gemini accepts only a subset of OpenAPI schema features. Very large or deeply nested declarations can be rejected even when they are valid JSON Schema elsewhere. Prefer small, flat objects; enumerate only the values the model needs; move complicated validation into application code; and split a broad tool into narrower operations when the declaration becomes difficult to understand.

When Gemini reports a schema error, first remove optional descriptions, deep nesting, unsupported combinators, and unused properties. Then add fields back incrementally. A simpler declaration is also easier for the model to select correctly.

Make names and descriptions unambiguous

Give every tool a unique, specific name that says what it does and, when useful, what it does not do. Avoid generic names such as process, search, or action when several operations could match. State the trigger, required identifiers, units, geographic scope, and side effects in the description. Add concrete input examples when the provider supports them.

For example, get_current_weather_by_city is clearer than weather, and create_calendar_event_draft communicates a safer operation than calendar. Do not expose two tools with overlapping descriptions unless the model has a clear discriminator.

Stop wrong-tool selection and invented arguments

Reduce ambiguity at the tool boundary

  • Expose only the tools needed for the current task instead of a catalog of unrelated operations.
  • Use descriptions that distinguish read, draft, update, and irreversible actions.
  • Use enums for finite states, units, and modes rather than asking the model to invent strings.
  • Require stable identifiers and reject guessed identifiers in application code.
  • Provide input examples for dates, addresses, pagination, and other formats that commonly vary.
  • Tell the model when it must ask the user for missing information instead of fabricating a value.

Anthropic’s guidance specifically recommends sharper descriptions, unique names, concrete input examples, or strict mode when a model chooses the wrong tool or invents parameters. Strict mode is useful only when the schema fits the provider’s supported subset; it cannot repair an ambiguous tool catalog.

Validate before executing

Parse the arguments as JSON, validate the schema, normalize safe representations such as dates and case, and enforce authorization before any side effect. Reject unknown fields and impossible values. Never use a model-generated string as a shell command, SQL fragment, URL destination, or file path without an allowlist and appropriate escaping.

}

A concise, machine-readable error lets the model correct a missing or malformed value while giving operators a stable field for alerts.

Preserve the call and result envelope

Execute in application code, then reply to the original call

The application—not the model—runs the function. Return a result that is explicitly associated with the call identifier supplied by the provider. Do not create a new identifier, rename the function in the result, or attach the result to the latest message instead of the call that requested it.

Keep the result compact and structured. Include the fields the model needs to continue, an explicit success flag, and a bounded error object when execution fails. Avoid dumping an entire database row, stack trace, or HTML page into the context; large, noisy results increase token use and make subsequent calls less reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle parallel calls as a batch

If the model emits multiple calls, execute each permitted call and preserve every sibling result. Dropping one result can leave the model waiting for a call that your application has already forgotten.

Anthropic requires all parallel tool_result blocks to appear in one user message. Sending separate user messages for each result can teach Claude that parallel use is unsupported and can cause continuation failures. Build the complete batch first, then send one correctly ordered message.

For OpenAI, set parallel_tool_calls to false when your application requires zero or one call at a time. Built-in tools cannot be placed in a parallel function-call batch. If parallel execution is allowed, make each operation independently authorized and idempotent; do not assume the model’s order is safe for dependent side effects.

Gemini call IDs and response parts

Gemini function results must use the same function-call ID as the request. Preserve every response part required by the continuation, not just the visible text. Error codes such as malformed_function_call, malformed_tool_call, unexpected_tool_call, too_many_tool_calls, and missing_thought_signature indicate different envelope or context problems, so log the exact code rather than collapsing all failures into “tool error.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve provider-specific context

Anthropic thinking and redacted-thinking blocks

When continuing an Anthropic tool conversation, send the latest assistant thinking and redacted-thinking blocks unchanged. Editing, omitting, reordering, or regenerating those blocks can produce a 400 even when the tool result itself is valid. Store the response object exactly as returned and reuse its required blocks when constructing the continuation.

Anthropic’s platform documentation identifies formatting tool results incorrectly in conversation history as the most common issue. In practice, inspect the serialized message sequence, not only your internal message objects: a middleware layer may have removed a block or split a required batch.

Gemini thought signatures

In combined-tool flows, Gemini requires thought signatures for all required response parts. Reusing the full response object through the SDK can preserve them automatically. If you manually reconstruct content, copy every required part and signature; retaining only the function call while discarding the associated signature can trigger missing_thought_signature.

Retry only failures that can recover

Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter

For 408, 429, and 5xx responses, wait an increasing interval with random jitter, cap the delay and total attempts, and honor any provider retry-after guidance. A typical policy starts near one second, doubles or otherwise increases the delay, and stops after a small number of attempts. The exact values should reflect your latency budget and rate limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Python SDK documentation says it retries transient failures up to four times, with delays of approximately one second initially and up to approximately 60 seconds. If you use that SDK behavior, account for the added latency; if you implement your own policy, avoid stacking your retries on top of the SDK’s retries without a strict overall limit.

Do not retry permanent errors

Do not blindly retry ordinary 400, 402, or 403 responses. Fix malformed syntax, billing, authentication, permission, unsupported schema, or policy problems first. Repeating a permanent request wastes quota and can turn one bug into a rate-limit incident.

Make side effects idempotent

A timeout does not prove that a tool failed; the server may have completed the operation before the response was lost. For purchases, messages, bookings, or writes, send an idempotency key derived from the logical operation and user intent. On retry, the tool should return the original result rather than perform the side effect twice. For non-idempotent legacy systems, use a status lookup or a durable job record before retrying.

Provider-specific troubleshooting map

Provider Schema and selection Call/result identity Context and parallelism Error and retry clues
OpenAI Strict mode requires additionalProperties: false, every property required, and nullable types for optional values. Disable parallel calls when the application needs one or zero. Return results for the original call IDs; do not mix built-in tools into a parallel function batch. Keep the exact response and continuation structure used by the API. Inspect the MCP item’s error field for protocol, execution, or connectivity failures. Retry only transient transport errors.
Anthropic Claude Use unique names, precise descriptions, examples, and strict: true when the schema fits the supported subset. Put every result from a parallel batch in one user message. Preserve assistant thinking and redacted-thinking blocks unchanged during continuation. A 400 after a tool result often indicates incorrectly formatted conversation history rather than a failed function.
Google Gemini Stay within the supported OpenAPI subset; simplify large or deeply nested declarations. Use the same function-call ID in the function result and preserve all required response parts. Return required thought signatures in combined-tool flows; reusing the full SDK response helps. Distinguish malformed, unexpected, too-many-call, and missing-signature errors. Documented SDK behavior retries transient failures up to four times.

Make errors useful to both the model and operators

Separate retryability from severity

Every tool error should state whether it is retryable, user-correctable, authorization-related, or an internal failure. A rate limit is retryable; an invalid date is user-correctable; a permission denial needs an authorization decision; a database outage may be retryable but should page an operator after the budget is exhausted. This classification prevents the model from repeatedly submitting an impossible call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return stable error codes

Use a small vocabulary such as invalid_argument, not_found, permission_denied, conflict, rate_limited, dependency_unavailable, and internal_error. Keep human detail in a separate message and never expose credentials, stack traces, SQL, or internal hostnames.

Instrument latency and token growth

Measure declaration size, argument size, tool execution time, result size, retries, and continuation latency. A suddenly larger schema or result often explains context errors and rising cost. Set limits on array lengths, pagination, recursion, and total tool rounds. Stop the loop with a clear status when the model exceeds the maximum number of calls.

Three common failure scenarios

A strict-schema 400

The request is rejected before generation. The declaration contains an optional timezone property that is not listed in required, and additionalProperties is omitted. Add the property to required, allow null when omission is meaningful, set additionalProperties to false, and run the same payload through a schema test before sending it again.

A valid call followed by an ignored result

Your application executes the function, but the next model response acts as though nothing happened. Compare identifiers: the result must reference the exact call ID, and every sibling result in a parallel batch must be present in the required envelope. Also check that middleware did not place the result in a new user message when the provider requires one combined message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 400 after a successful Anthropic tool execution

The function returned correctly, but the continuation fails. Inspect the serialized assistant message. If thinking or redacted-thinking blocks were dropped, edited, or reordered, restore the exact blocks from the original response and resend the tool results in the documented structure. Do not regenerate the assistant message from a simplified internal representation.

Production checklist

  • Every tool has a unique name, a precise description, a bounded schema, and an explicit side-effect warning.
  • The provider declaration and application validator are generated from or tested against the same contract.
  • Strict-mode requirements are met where strict mode is enabled.
  • Arguments are parsed, schema-validated, authorized, normalized, and constrained before execution.
  • Results contain the original call ID, a compact payload, and a structured error when needed.
  • Parallel results follow the provider’s single-message or batch rules, and no sibling call is silently dropped.
  • Required assistant thinking, redacted-thinking, response parts, and thought signatures are preserved exactly.
  • Tool operations with side effects use idempotency keys or a status-check mechanism.
  • Retries use bounded exponential backoff with jitter only for 408, 429, and 5xx conditions.
  • 400, 402, and 403 responses stop for correction rather than entering a retry loop.
  • Logs include raw request and response data with secrets and sensitive values redacted.
  • Alerts distinguish schema, selection, execution, context, permission, quota, and transport failures.

When a tool call fails, the fastest path is not a more forceful prompt. Find the first broken contract, repair that boundary, and replay the smallest complete exchange with its original identifiers and required context.
