A comment.dll error does not identify a standard Windows component, so the safest fix is not to download a replacement DLL. First capture the complete error and the path Windows reports, then determine whether the file belongs to one application or reflects broader Windows corruption. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC only when the symptoms point to the operating system; repair or reinstall the affected application when its own folder owns the file.
What a comment.dll error means
Messages such as “comment.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because comment.dll was not found,” or an error appearing while a particular program starts all describe a missing, unreadable, incompatible or damaged dynamic-link library (DLL). Those phrases explain the symptom, not the owner of the file.

Microsoft’s published Windows component and system-file repair guidance does not identify comment.dll as a standard Windows component. That means you should not assume the file belongs to Windows, and you should not replace it with a copy from a random DLL-download site. The same filename can be used by unrelated applications, while a misleading or incomplete dialog can hide the real cause.

The correct repair depends on five facts: the exact dialog text, the program that displays it, the full path shown for the DLL, your Windows edition and build, and whether the problem affects one application or several Windows functions. A numeric error code, if present, is also important.

Record the error before changing anything
Write down or photograph the dialog before dismissing it. Keep the spelling, punctuation and capitalization exactly as shown. Then collect the following details:
- The executable or application name that fails.
- The complete path displayed for
comment.dll, if a path is shown. - Whether the message appears during Windows startup, when opening one program, or during several unrelated tasks.
- Your Windows edition, version and build number. Press
Windows+R, enterwinver, and record the result. - Any numeric error code and the time the failure began.
- Whether the application or Windows was updated, moved to another drive, restored from backup, or uninstalled shortly before the error.
This record prevents a common mistake: applying a system-wide repair to an application-specific file, or installing a runtime that the error never actually requires.
Use the path to identify who owns the DLL
The folder is the strongest initial clue. It does not prove ownership by itself, so use it together with the application name and symptom scope.

Do not infer ownership from the filename alone. A DLL in an application directory is normally handled by that application’s installer. A DLL in a Windows directory warrants servicing checks, but it still should not be replaced manually without identifying the file and matching the installed Windows build.
Install pending Windows updates and restart
Before running repairs, open Settings > Windows Update and install the updates offered for your edition. Restart when Windows requests it, even if the update appears unrelated. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance treats pending updates and component-store corruption as possible reasons Windows cannot read or process required files.

After the restart, launch the same program or repeat the same action that produced the message. If the error is gone, keep the recorded details in case it returns. If it remains, continue with the built-in servicing commands below.
Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt
DISM and System File Checker are included Windows utilities. They repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not discover which third-party application owns an unfamiliar DLL.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
The title bar should indicate an elevated prompt. If you receive an access or permission error, close it and repeat these steps; do not run the commands in an ordinary, non-administrator window.
2. Repair the Windows image with DISM
Type the following command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthAllow the operation to finish. It can pause for a while, so do not close the window merely because the progress display appears unchanged. When DISM has completed, note its final status. If it reports that the operation could not be completed, preserve the message rather than repeatedly guessing at switches or downloading replacement files.

3. Scan protected files with SFC
In the same elevated window, after DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannowWait until the scan reaches completion and record the final result. SFC checks protected Windows files for corruption and attempts repairs. Running it before DISM can leave the component source it needs unrepaired, which is why the order matters.
4. Restart and retest
Close the Command Prompt, restart Windows, and repeat the action that produced the comment.dll message. Test the same application and, if the original symptom was broader, test one or two of the other affected Windows functions. A successful command is not the same as a confirmed application repair; the retest determines whether the original failure changed.
Repair an application-owned installation
If the path points into one application’s folder, use that publisher’s installer or repair feature instead of copying a DLL from elsewhere. Save your work first, because repair programs may close the application.
Use Windows’ installed-app repair option when available
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (the label may be Apps & features on older Windows versions).
- Find the affected application, open its additional options, and choose Repair if that option is offered.
- Restart the application and reproduce the original action.
The exact options vary by application. A repair normally preserves the installation’s settings, but the publisher’s documentation controls what that specific installer does.

Reinstall from the official publisher
If repair is unavailable or does not resolve the error, uninstall the affected application through its normal Windows or publisher-supported process. Restart if requested, then download the current installer from the application’s official publisher and install it again. Use the edition and architecture intended for your Windows installation. Do not obtain an isolated comment.dll from an unverified archive: the file may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, may belong to a different program, or may have been altered.
When the application stores user data separately, back up that data before uninstalling. If the application is managed by an organization, ask the administrator for the approved installer rather than replacing files in the program directory.
Install a runtime only when the error identifies it
Some applications depend on a separate runtime, but the filename alone does not establish which one. Install a runtime only when the complete error, the application’s publisher, or its support instructions names the required runtime and architecture. Installing unrelated runtime packages can add clutter without restoring the missing dependency and can make later troubleshooting harder.

Only one program fails
Confirm the executable name and DLL path, then use the application’s repair or official reinstall process. If the program was recently moved, restored or partially uninstalled, reinstalling to its intended location is more appropriate than changing Windows system folders. If the publisher provides an application log or repair utility, preserve its output for support.

Several unrelated programs fail
Run Windows Update, DISM and SFC in the stated order. Record each final status and restart before testing again. If multiple programs still fail, note whether their errors mention the same path or merely the same filename. A shared path under Windows points toward system servicing; different application paths suggest separate installations or a common runtime, not proof that comment.dll is a Windows file.

The message appears during startup
First identify the executable named in the dialog. If it belongs to an application you no longer use, uninstall that application through Windows and restart. If it is a needed application, repair or reinstall it from the official source. If the startup dialog names no application and other Windows functions are also failing, complete the Windows servicing sequence and preserve the exact message for support.
The error appears after an update
Restart once more after all pending updates finish, then test the affected program. If only that application changed, use its repair or reinstall path. If Windows itself reports component or file errors, run DISM followed by SFC. Do not roll back or delete system files simply because the timing makes an update look suspicious; the path and the broader symptoms are better evidence.
What to do when DISM or SFC does not resolve it
A clean command result does not prove that an unknown third-party DLL is present or correct. If the message remains, preserve the following for the next support contact:
- The original dialog text, including any number.
- The failing executable and full DLL path.
- Your
winverresult and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. - The final DISM and SFC messages.
- The application version and the date the problem began.
- Whether the failure survives a restart and whether other applications are affected.
Use Microsoft’s official Windows Update and component-repair guidance when the servicing commands fail or Windows reports continuing component-store problems. If normal servicing cannot restore Windows, an official recovery option or an in-place repair using media that matches the installed Windows edition and build may be appropriate. Follow the on-screen backup and data-preservation requirements, and contact Microsoft Support or the application publisher when the correct repair source is uncertain.
Actions to avoid
- Do not download a standalone
comment.dllfrom an unverified DLL archive. - Do not copy an unknown DLL into
System32,SysWOW64or an application folder merely because the filename matches. - Do not register the file blindly with a command such as
regsvr32; many DLLs are not self-registering, and registration does not repair a missing dependency or wrong architecture. - Do not delete or rename Windows files to silence the message.
- Do not install a runtime package unless an authoritative application instruction identifies it.
These shortcuts can introduce a mismatched architecture or tampered file and can remove evidence needed by application or Microsoft support. The supported path is to identify ownership, service Windows when appropriate, and obtain application files from the official publisher.
