How to Fix Co-Op Game Voice Chat, Controller, and Connection Problems

Start by separating the failure into one of three layers: voice chat, controller input, or the network path to the other player. Write down the game, platform, exact error, whether system menus respond to the controller, whether platform party chat works, and whether every teammate or only one person is affected. Change one setting at a time, retest, and compare results with another player. A game can also impose its own voice, cross-play, privacy, matchmaking, and server rules, so platform troubleshooting is a way to narrow the cause, not a guarantee that the game itself is configured correctly.

Identify which layer is failing

Do not begin by opening router ports or buying a headset. First run three separate checks while everyone is in the same session:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Audio check: Can you hear normal game or system sounds? If yes, the console or PC audio output is working and the problem may be the chat channel, selected device, mute state, or game settings.
  2. Controller check: Does the controller operate the console or PC system menus? If it works in menus but not in the game, investigate the game’s control mapping or input mode. If it fails in menus too, treat pairing, battery, firmware, or hardware as the primary issue.
  3. Connection check: Does the platform’s built-in internet test reach its online services, and what NAT type and upload/download results does it report? A successful test does not prove that a particular game’s matchmaking service is healthy, but a failed test gives you a clear local-network lead.

Record whether platform party chat works, whether the problem affects all teammates or only one friend, and whether another multiplayer game behaves normally. If platform chat works while in-game chat fails, that points toward the game’s chat mode, permissions, or service; it is a useful diagnostic inference, not proof. If a problem appears only when one particular friend hosts or joins, have that player run the same checks because the other network may be the limiting side.

Why can’t I hear my friends in game chat?

One-way audio is commonly caused by a muted microphone, the wrong input or output device, a volume slider set to zero, or party chat taking priority over game chat. Check local audio before changing network settings.

  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

Check mute and the active chat channel

  • Inspect the physical mute switch or button on the headset, controller, and console. Also inspect the microphone icon in the game’s social or scoreboard screen.
  • Confirm that you are in game chat rather than a platform party. Some titles provide a chat-priority option that routes audio exclusively to the party until you switch it.
  • Ask the other player to check their own output volume and mute state. A person who can hear you but cannot be heard by you may have a local output problem on their side, while a person who cannot hear anyone may have a channel or output-device problem on yours.
  • Check cross-platform communication and privacy permissions if the game exposes them. The exact names and locations differ by title and account age or family settings.

PlayStation audio and chat checks

On PlayStation, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and verify the intended output device. Then open Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the intended input device, and watch the microphone level while speaking. A level meter that never moves means the console is not receiving input from the selected device; check the plug, wireless connection, mute control, and another known-working headset or controller.

In the control centre or Game Base, check whether Party Chat or Game Chat is prioritized. The same type of device and chat checks apply to PS4, although menu labels and layout can differ. If normal game audio is audible but voices are not, stay in these audio and chat controls before investigating the router.

Steam voice checks on PC

In Steam, inspect the selected microphone and playback device in Steam’s voice settings and in the operating system’s sound settings. A game launch can switch the active input, especially when a webcam, USB headset, Bluetooth device, or monitor audio is also connected. Disconnect unused audio devices temporarily, reconnect the intended headset fully, and confirm that the operating system’s input meter responds.

If Steam voice remains at “Connecting…”, Steam says its voice system uses WebRTC and needs outbound UDP access to remote ports 27014 through 27020, with responses allowed. This is a Steam-specific requirement; do not apply these ports to a console or assume that opening them will repair every game’s matchmaking. Check local firewall or security software for a blocked Steam process before changing router rules.

Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat

For Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat, first verify that ordinary system or game audio is audible. If it is, check whether an individual participant’s voice volume has been lowered in the GameChat interface. Continue through the connection checks below if the participant still cannot be heard. GameChat behavior and controls are separate from a game’s own voice system, so a title may still require its own voice-chat toggle.

When the microphone meter does not respond

Try a known-working headset or controller, using the connection type supported by the platform. This test isolates a failed cable, microphone, or controller jack, but it does not by itself prove that replacement hardware is needed: a wrong device selection, permission, mute switch, or game setting can produce the same symptom. Test the original accessory in system menus or on another supported device before spending money.

Why can my friends hear me but I can’t hear them?

This pattern usually places the fault on your playback path rather than your microphone. Verify the selected output device, chat volume, and channel priority in that order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the output to the headset or speakers you are actually wearing or using. A console may still be sending chat to a television, controller speaker, monitor, or a previously paired Bluetooth device.
  2. Raise the chat or participant volume independently of master game volume. Many games and platform overlays have separate sliders.
  3. Switch from party chat to game chat, or vice versa, and ask the host to confirm that you are in the same channel.
  4. Check the headset’s inline volume wheel and any physical balance control between game audio and chat audio.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then restart the game so it re-enumerates the audio device. On PC, confirm that the game has permission to use the selected output and has not retained a disconnected device.

If you can hear game sound but not voices after these steps, test platform party chat. Working party chat narrows the issue toward the game’s channel, permissions, or service. If party chat also fails, return to the platform’s output-device and chat-priority controls.

Why won’t my controller connect to my console or PC?

Controller pairing is separate from the game’s button mapping. Establish a stable connection to the current device first, then troubleshoot software and the game.

Universal pairing sequence

  1. Charge the controller or install known-good batteries. A controller can illuminate briefly yet lack enough power to complete pairing.
  2. Confirm that it is not still paired to another console, phone, or computer nearby. Turn Bluetooth off on the unused device or remove the old pairing temporarily.
  3. Put the controller into the platform’s pairing mode and select it on the device currently running the game. If available, use a supported USB data cable for the first pairing or as a diagnostic; a charge-only cable will not carry data.
  4. Check whether the controller operates system menus. Menu operation separates a platform connection problem from a game-specific input problem.
  5. Install available controller or device software updates through the platform’s official update route. Do not interrupt an update or disconnect the controller while firmware is being written.
  6. Use the exact reset procedure for that controller model, then pair it again. Reset holes, button combinations, and durations differ; never apply instructions for one model to another.

PlayStation controller specifics

Pair the controller with the PlayStation console or supported computer or mobile device that you are using now. PlayStation states that a DualSense can be paired with one PS5 console at a time and that some features vary or are unavailable on computers and mobile systems. If wireless pairing fails, reset the controller using the model-specific procedure and reconnect it with USB. Update the console and controller software where the platform offers an update.

When the controller works in menus but not in the game

  • Open the game’s controller or input settings and select the correct device layout.
  • Disable a second controller, virtual input layer, or remapping utility temporarily so the game receives only one input source.
  • Check whether the title supports that controller on your platform and whether a wired connection is required for certain features.
  • Restart the game after changing the input device; some games read controller assignments only at launch.

For a controller model other than DualSense, use its maker’s official pairing mode, firmware route, and reset instructions. Platform support is the appropriate next step when the device fails outside one particular game.

Why can’t I join my friend’s co-op game?

Joining depends on more than download speed. Matchmaking may be blocked by NAT reachability, a failed platform service, a privacy or cross-play restriction, a game-server incident, or the host’s network. Test the platform connection before changing advanced router settings.

Run and record the platform connection test

Use the console’s built-in internet test and record whether it reaches platform services, the reported NAT type, and upload and download results. Nintendo’s guidance uses its own letter scale:

NAT result Nintendo’s peer-to-peer guidance What to do next
A Most favorable for peer-to-peer connections If joining still fails, check the game, account permissions, service status, or the other player’s network.
B Compatible with most other NAT types Retest with the intended friend and investigate game-specific matchmaking rules.
D Connections can be difficult Test wired or improve wireless conditions, then consult the router maker, ISP, or network administrator.
F May prevent peer-to-peer connections Escalate the network configuration rather than repeatedly changing in-game settings.

These grades and interpretations are Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance, not a universal cross-platform scale. Other consoles, PC games, dedicated servers, and relay systems may use different labels or architectures. The 3 Mbps decision point shown in Nintendo’s troubleshooting flow is a diagnostic prompt from Nintendo, not a speed requirement that guarantees every co-op game will work.

Improve a wireless path without guessing

  1. Bring the console or PC closer to the router and reduce physical obstructions.
  2. Move it away from nearby sources of wireless interference and congested electronics.
  3. Power-cycle the modem and router, wait for the service lights to stabilize, and run the platform test again.
  4. If a wired connection is available, test it with a known-good Ethernet cable. Nintendo specifically recommends trying another cable to identify a damaged original; the cable is a diagnostic, not a universal cure.
  5. Retest after each change and write down whether NAT, speed, or matchmaking behavior changed.

If wireless works for ordinary browsing but co-op remains unreachable, do not assume that more bandwidth will solve peer-to-peer reachability. NAT behavior, firewall rules, carrier-grade network design, and the host’s configuration can matter independently of the speed result. Ask the router manufacturer, ISP, or network administrator for help with advanced configuration rather than making random port changes.

Check the friend and the game

Have the affected friend run the same connection test. If you can join other players but not this person, their NAT or local network may be involved. If nobody can join anyone, check the game’s service or support page and the platform’s service status. Confirm that both players use compatible game versions, the same required downloadable content, matching cross-play permissions, and privacy settings that allow invitations and communication. These controls are title-specific and may be hidden under account, family, or online-safety menus.

Only one friend cannot join The other player’s network or account path may be involved Have that player run the same NAT, speed, privacy, and chat checks.

What to do after every change

Retest the exact action that failed: speak in the same chat channel, move through the same menu, or send the same co-op invitation. Do not change headset, router, privacy settings, and game mode simultaneously; doing so removes the evidence that identifies the cause. Nintendo explicitly recommends testing after changes, and the same discipline makes PlayStation, Steam, and other platforms easier to diagnose.

  • Keep the game and platform version in your notes.
  • Capture the exact error text rather than paraphrasing it.
  • Record whether the issue affects one player, one host, one game, or every session.
  • Note the NAT result and connection-test speeds before and after a network change.
  • Stop applying a fix when the symptom changes; the new behavior is evidence for the next branch.

When to escalate instead of experimenting

Use the game’s support path

Escalate to the game’s support or status page when only that title fails while other multiplayer games and platform voice chat work, or when its own voice, cross-play, version, or server settings are implicated. Include the game version, platform, region if requested by the title, exact error, host and guest roles, and the results of your platform connection test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use platform repair support

Use platform repair diagnostics when a controller fails in system menus or across supported devices after charging, pairing, firmware updating, and model-specific reset. Include the cable and device tests you already completed so support does not send you through the same steps.

Use router, ISP, or network-administrator support

Ask for network help when multiple games fail, the platform reports a restrictive NAT, wired and improved wireless tests produce the same result, or you are on a managed school, work, apartment, or carrier network. Tell the administrator whether the platform test reaches services and whether the issue affects every friend or only one connection. Avoid opening unrelated ports or disabling security controls without a documented requirement for the platform or game.

Hardware purchases should be the last diagnostic step

A compatible wired headset with a microphone can be reasonable if a known-good accessory test confirms that the current microphone, cable, or connector is defective. Verify the connector type, USB or wireless support, console compatibility, and chat controls before buying. An Ethernet cable is similarly useful when a wired console test is available and the existing cable may be damaged. Neither purchase fixes a muted device, wrong chat channel, restrictive privacy setting, failed game service, or NAT problem.

Quick recovery checklist

  1. Name the game and platform and identify whether voice, controller, joining, or several functions fail.
  2. Test normal audio, the controller in system menus, and the platform connection separately.
  3. For voice, unmute, select input and output, set the microphone level, choose the intended party or game channel, and check privacy or cross-play options.
  4. For a controller, charge it, pair it to the current device, test a supported USB data connection, update firmware, and use the exact model reset procedure.
  5. For matchmaking, record NAT and speed results, test another player, improve wireless conditions or try a known-good Ethernet cable, and retest after every change.
  6. Escalate to the game, platform repair service, router maker, ISP, or network administrator according to the layer that failed.
