How to Fix Clipped Full-Page Screenshots in Scheduled Puppeteer Jobs

If a scheduled Puppeteer job saves only part of a page, check the screenshot options first: set fullPage: true, remove or account for any clip, and make sure the page has finished rendering before capture. Then compare the job’s viewport, headless screen size, Puppeteer and browser versions, and runtime with a local run. No single cause can be identified without the job’s code and environment, so use the checks below in order.

1. Check the screenshot options

Puppeteer’s fullPage option is intended to capture the whole page. Its screenshot API documents the option as: “When true, takes a screenshot of the full page.” A clip rectangle, however, requests a region. Review the complete options object rather than assuming that fullPage cancels out a crop or that captureBeyondViewport behaves identically with every combination. See the ScreenshotOptions API.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
});

Search the scheduled job and any helper or wrapper it calls for clip, including code that conditionally adds options. If you need a full-page shot, remove the crop unless you have a specific reason to capture only a region. If a crop is intentional, verify its coordinates and dimensions against the intended output.

2. Wait for the page content you need

Navigation completion does not necessarily mean the page is visually complete. Client-side rendering, lazy-loaded images, and delayed sections may appear after the initial document loads. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but that is not a universal readiness signal for every site.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
  waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
  timeout: 60_000,
});

// Prefer a page-specific signal when the content renders asynchronously.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]', {
  timeout: 30_000,
});

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

Replace the example selector with a real element or application signal that indicates the content you need is present. If no such signal exists, use a bounded delay only as a fallback; a fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Puppeteer’s navigation and screenshot examples are in its screenshot guide.

3. Log the viewport and page dimensions

Record the viewport settings and document dimensions immediately before capture. This can reveal whether the scheduled worker is rendering a different layout, whether content has not appeared yet, or whether the screenshot is being taken before the page grows to its final size.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
const viewport = page.viewport();
const dimensions = await page.evaluate(() => ({
  innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
  innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
  documentWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
  documentHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
  bodyHeight: document.body?.scrollHeight ?? null,
}));

console.log({ viewport, dimensions });

page.viewport() reports Puppeteer’s viewport settings. The document measurements come from the page itself, so compare them with the saved image and with a successful local capture. Puppeteer documents page.setViewport(null) as restoring the default viewport; avoid relying on an implicit default if the job requires a particular layout. See the viewport API and setViewport API.

4. Make headless screen sizing deliberate

Puppeteer’s headless mode uses a single 800×600 screen by default unless a window size is set. Screen size and the page viewport are related but distinct settings to inspect. If the page’s layout or capture depends on dimensions, set the viewport deliberately and compare the same configuration locally and in the scheduled worker. Puppeteer describes headless screen sizing in its headless modes guide.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
await page.setViewport({
  width: 1440,
  height: 900,
  deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});

Use dimensions appropriate to the page and desired output; the example is not a required setting. If your launch configuration specifies a window size, log that too. When resizing content through page code, Puppeteer’s guide shows how to wait for the asynchronous resize event before proceeding; see the viewport API.

5. Confirm the deployed Puppeteer and browser versions

Log the versions in the scheduled worker, not only on a developer machine. Puppeteer’s changelog records screenshot clipping behavior changes in version 7.0.0 and a fix in version 22.12.1 for viewport reset during full-page screenshots when defaultViewport: null. Those historical changes make version comparison useful, but do not establish that upgrading will fix a particular job. Reproduce the issue with the deployed versions before changing them. Check the Puppeteer changelog.

6. Compare the scheduled runtime with local execution

If the same code works locally but not on the schedule, compare the job’s launch options, user-data directory, permissions, runtime limits, and available execution time or CPU. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide discusses writable user-data directories and a Cloud Run case in which background CPU allocation changes execution speed. These are deployment checks, not proof that a scheduler itself clips screenshots. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Symptom First check What to do
The image consistently ends at a specific region Look for clip or a wrapper that adds it. Remove the crop for a whole-page capture, or correct its bounds if a crop is intended.
The image is short only on pages with delayed sections or images Check whether the relevant content exists before the screenshot call. Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness signal; do not assume navigation alone means rendering is complete.
Layout or clipping differs between local and scheduled runs Compare page.viewport(), headless window sizing, and document dimensions. Set dimensions explicitly and compare like-for-like configurations.
The problem began after a dependency or browser change Log the installed Puppeteer and browser versions. Reproduce with the deployed versions and consult the changelog before selecting a version-related fix.
The scheduled job fails or behaves inconsistently before capture Check runtime limits, CPU availability, launch settings, and writable user-data paths. Use Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance for the deployment platform; do not treat these failures as evidence of a screenshot crop by themselves.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API: one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cookie/consent handling removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Example cURL request (replace the URL and API key):

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Puppeteer’s fullPage: true guarantee every page element will appear?

No. It requests a full-page screenshot, but content that has not rendered yet cannot be captured; also review crop and capture options.

What should I compare first when a scheduled screenshot differs from a local one?

Compare the effective screenshot options, readiness condition, viewport and screen size, installed versions, and runtime configuration.
