First determine what “classic” means on your console: a game bought by your account, a title shared from another account, or a PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog game. Ownership, subscription eligibility and catalog availability can produce a padlock or a missing download that looks like a technical failure. Once access is confirmed, separate a download problem (the game never installs) from a launch problem (it installs but will not start), then follow the matching PS4 or PS5 steps below.
Identify the kind of access you have
Classic PlayStation games are delivered through different entitlement systems. The fix depends on which one applies, so check this before deleting anything.

A catalog game can disappear when Sony changes the catalog, even if you downloaded it in the past. A subscription title is therefore not the same as a permanently purchased license. Do not assume that every older PlayStation game is included, or that every membership level permits both downloading and streaming.

Check a purchased title
- Sign in to the account that completed the purchase.
- Open the account’s Game Library and look for the title.
- If the game is absent, review transaction history for the purchase. A different account, a failed transaction or a regional account difference can explain a missing item.
Check a shared title
On PS5, the purchasing account must have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on the console. On PS4, that account must have the console activated as its primary PS4. If those settings are disabled or the purchaser is signed out, another local user can see a padlock or lose access.

Check a Classics Catalog title
- Open the PlayStation Plus section on the console.
- Find the game in the current Classics Catalog rather than launching an old library shortcut.
- Confirm that your active plan is the one required for that title.
- Read the listing to see whether the title supports download, streaming, or both.
Streaming has separate network requirements: Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed, while 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports 1080p. Those figures apply to streaming, not to a normal download, and a fast connection cannot restore an expired catalog entitlement.
Why is my classic game locked or missing?
A padlock, an unavailable Download button or a game that vanishes from the library usually indicates an account or license problem. Confirm ownership or catalog eligibility first; restoring licenses cannot create an entitlement that the account never had.
Restore licenses on PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore and wait for the operation to finish.
- Return to the Game Library or PlayStation Plus listing and try the title again.
Restore licenses on PS4
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore.
- Open the library and retry the download or launch.
PlayStation Support states: “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” The process refreshes entitlement records; it does not delete save files or installed games.

- Sign out of other accounts and sign back in to the account that owns the purchase or subscription.
- Check that the PlayStation Plus membership has not expired and that the title is still listed in the catalog.
- For shared access, recheck PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play or PS4 primary-console activation on the purchasing account.
- Check the game’s region and the account’s purchase history. A title bought on another regional account will not become owned by a different account merely because both accounts use the same console.
Why won’t my PlayStation game download?
When entitlement is valid but the download will not begin, stalls or repeatedly fails, treat it as a queue, service, software or storage issue.
1. Check service status before repeated retries
Open the official PlayStation service-status page and look for an outage affecting downloads, the store or account services. If a service is degraded, repeated cancellation and restarting can leave several incomplete queue entries; wait for service recovery before trying again.
2. Inspect the download queue
- Open the notification or download area and select the stalled game.
- Choose Pause, wait a few seconds, then choose Resume.
- Watch for a specific error code or a storage message rather than relying only on the progress percentage.
A pause-and-resume can repair a transient connection interruption without discarding already downloaded data.

3. Cancel the bad item and start a clean download
If the item remains stuck, cancel or delete it from the queue, then open the title from the Game Library or current PlayStation Plus listing and select Download again. Deleting the queued download is different from deleting your save data; confirm the on-screen item before accepting the deletion.
4. Verify system software and storage
- Install any available PS4 or PS5 system-software update.
- Check free space in the console’s storage settings. A game can require more temporary working space than the final installed size.
- Remove unused captures or games only after confirming that important saves are synchronized or backed up.
- If the console uses external storage, verify that the drive is connected and recognized before starting the download.
5. Use Safe Mode only after ordinary retries
When service status, software, storage and the queue all look normal, Sony’s download troubleshooting guidance points to the database option in Safe Mode. On PS5, the relevant choices are Clear Cache and Rebuild Database; on PS4, choose Rebuild Database. These options address temporary system data and the content index, not account ownership.
Do not interrupt the console while it is rebuilding. If the menu warns about data loss or system reinstallation, stop and make sure you understand which option is selected before proceeding.
Why won’t my PS4 or PS5 game start after it downloads?
A completed installation with an immediate crash, an error message or a return to the home screen is a launch failure. Work through these steps in order so that you do not repeatedly download a game when the problem is the license or the console’s content index.
Restart and refresh access
- Restart the console completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Restore licenses using the PS5 or PS4 path above.
- Start the game from the account that owns it or from the eligible PlayStation Plus account.
Update the console and game
Install the latest available system software. From the game’s options menu, check for a game update as well. A title that was installed while the console was offline can fail at launch until its software and license checks complete.
Check the installation location on PS5
If the game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and try again. Sony specifically recommends this for launch failures involving an externally installed PS5 game. Ensure the move finishes before opening the title.

Delete and redownload
- Back up or synchronize saves if required by your setup.
- Delete the installed game, not the saved-data item.
- Restore licenses once more, then redownload from the verified purchase or catalog listing.
- Use a wired network connection if possible during the redownload to reduce interruption.
Redownloading is useful when the local installation is corrupt; it will not fix a title that is no longer in the subscription catalog or an account that never purchased it.
Use Safe Mode for a persistent launch error
On PS5, try Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. On PS4, try Rebuild Database. Rebuilding can correct an index problem that prevents an otherwise complete installation from being located. Keep the console powered until the operation ends.
Last-resort system software reinstallation on PS5
Sony’s launch-failure guidance lists backing up data and reinstalling system software through Safe Mode as a later step. This is substantially more disruptive than restoring licenses or rebuilding the database: it can remove console content and requires the correct reinstallation file and procedure. Attempt it only after the title, account, storage and less destructive Safe Mode options have been checked, and follow Sony’s current on-screen instructions exactly.
Extra checks that prevent wasted downloads
Compare the symptom with the account state
If the Download button is absent, the title is locked, or the game disappears immediately after a membership change, stop treating the issue as a network failure. Verify the purchasing account, transaction history, active membership and current catalog listing first. A valid internet connection cannot compensate for an expired subscription or a title removed from the catalog. Likewise, restoring licenses refreshes records but cannot transfer a purchase between accounts.
Separate download, install and launch stages
Note exactly where the process stops. A download that remains at a percentage is a queue or service problem. A download that finishes but reports an installation error points to storage, system software or damaged content. An installed game that returns to the home screen is a launch problem, where licenses, updates, storage location and the database are more useful checks than repeatedly pressing Download.
Be deliberate with storage cleanup
Free space matters before and during installation. If you remove games, captures or other content to make room, verify that needed saves are synchronized or backed up first. Delete the game application when redownloading; do not select the saved-data entry by mistake. On PS5, also confirm whether the title is on USB extended storage and move it internally before concluding that the installation is defective.

Know when Safe Mode is appropriate
Safe Mode is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a padlock. Use ordinary queue, service, storage, software and license checks first. When you do rebuild the database, leave the console powered until it finishes. Read every warning carefully: rebuilding the database is different from reinstalling system software, and the latter is far more disruptive.

Before contacting support, reproduce the failure once and record the stage, exact wording, code, date, time zone and console model. State whether the title is purchased, shared or supplied through PlayStation Plus, and identify which account and membership you verified. A screenshot or short video can preserve a message that disappears. This information lets support distinguish a service incident, entitlement problem and damaged installation without asking you to repeat every step.

How to handle an error code
Record the complete code and message before deleting the game or changing settings. Also note whether the failure occurred while starting, downloading, installing or checking a license. That context determines which support procedure applies.
For example, Sony’s CE-106487-6 guidance describes a PS5 download or installation issue and includes updating system software, restoring licenses, deleting and retrying the download, and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. It is an example of a code-specific path, not a universal remedy for every classic-game error.
What to send to PlayStation Support
- The exact error code and wording.
- Whether the game is purchased, shared or supplied by PlayStation Plus.
- Your console model (PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition) and current system-software version.
- The account or membership state you verified.
- The time and date of the attempt, including your time zone.
- The steps that reproduce the failure, such as selecting Download, resuming at 37 percent or launching after installation.
- A screenshot or video if the message disappears quickly.
Do not provide a password or full payment details. Support can use the code, account history and reproduction steps to distinguish a service incident from a damaged installation or an entitlement issue.

- Do not buy a second copy before checking which account owns the first one.
- Do not assume a PlayStation Plus title remains playable after leaving the catalog or after the membership expires.
- Do not repeatedly restart a failed download while the service-status page reports an outage.
- Do not choose system-software reinstallation when you intended only to rebuild the database.
- Do not delete saved data when the goal is to remove a stalled download or reinstall the game.
- Do not treat streaming bandwidth as a solution to a missing download entitlement.
