The quickest way to reduce Chrome’s memory and battery use during a study session is to close tabs you no longer need, enable Memory Saver, protect only essential course pages with Always keep these sites active, and enable Energy Saver when the computer is running on battery. If Chrome still uses too many resources, update it, remove unnecessary extensions, inspect Chrome Task Manager, and treat preloading as an optional troubleshooting experiment.
These controls are designed for Chrome on a computer. Chrome’s performance-personalization settings are not available on iOS or Android, and Energy Saver requires a Windows, Mac, or Chromebook computer with a battery installed.

Start with the tabs you really need
Every open tab is another page Chrome may have to maintain, update, or restore. Google’s official speed guidance puts the basic trade-off plainly: “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” Closing tabs that are outside the current assignment is therefore the first, lowest-risk fix. See Google’s Chrome speed-up guidance.

Use a short cleanup pass
- Scan the tab strip from left to right and identify pages that are not part of today’s task.
- Save or submit any work in those pages.
- Close duplicates and completed pages first.
- Leave only the tabs needed for the current study block, plus any page you deliberately want available for immediate reference.
There is no official “correct” number of tabs for every computer. Available memory, page complexity, extensions, and what each page is doing all vary, so use responsiveness and battery behavior—not a universal tab limit—as your signal.
Turn on Memory Saver and choose the right level
Memory Saver reduces memory pressure by deactivating tabs you are not currently using. When you return to an inactive tab, Chrome automatically reloads it. That behavior can make a large research session manageable, but it also means a returning page may refresh and may not retain transient state. Save important work in the site itself before leaving a tab idle.
On a computer, open Chrome and choose More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Performance. Turn on Memory Saver, then select the level that fits your workflow. Google documents three choices in its Chrome performance settings help.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Level | What Chrome does | Best fit for studying | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moderate | Provides moderate memory savings and leaves inactive tabs active for a longer period. | Use when you frequently switch between references and want fewer reloads. | Less aggressive deactivation can leave more memory in use. |
| Balanced | Uses a middle setting with an “optimal” inactive period; Google labels it recommended. | Use as the default for most study sessions. | Some tabs may reload when you return after being away. |
| Maximum | Targets maximum memory savings and makes tabs inactive after a shorter period. | Use when Chrome is slowing the computer and most references can be reloaded. | More frequent deactivation and reloads can interrupt a workflow. |
The labels describe relative behavior, not a guaranteed amount of saved RAM. Google’s guidance does not publish a memory-savings figure for any level, and the result depends on the pages, extensions, and computer involved. Start with Balanced. Move to Moderate if you are repeatedly returning to pages and dislike reloads; choose Maximum when reducing memory pressure matters more than keeping idle pages immediately warm.
What a deactivated tab means
Memory Saver does not intentionally delete the tab from your tab strip or remove its address. It makes the inactive page eligible to be unloaded from active memory. Selecting that tab causes Chrome to load it again. A normal article may return cleanly, while a page containing a partially completed form, a temporary editor state, or a session that depends on a live connection may not restore every transient detail. Submit, save, or copy anything important before moving away from a page you cannot afford to lose.

Keep essential study sites active
Some pages should remain available without deactivation: a course portal during an open quiz, a document editor containing unsaved work, a reference dashboard that must preserve its state, or a communications page you are actively monitoring. Add those sites to Always keep these sites active in the same Settings > Performance area.
- Open Chrome’s three-dot More menu.
- Select Settings, then Performance.
- Find Always keep these sites active and choose the control to add a site.
- Enter the course site, document host, or other essential site using the interface shown by Chrome.
- Review the list and remove entries that are no longer needed so the exception list stays focused.
Chrome supports site and path-level patterns in this control. For a general study setup, use the visible add-site interface rather than hand-building wildcard rules. A broad exception can keep many pages active and reduce the memory benefit you were trying to obtain; a narrowly chosen course or document host is easier to understand and revise.

Why an apparently idle tab may stay active
Memory Saver does not deactivate every tab that is simply out of view. Chrome identifies several conditions that can keep a page active:
- Audio or video is playing, or a call is in progress.
- The page is sharing your screen.
- The page is sending notifications.
- A download is active.
- A form is partially completed.
- The tab is pinned.
- A connected USB or Bluetooth device is involved.
These conditions explain why a pinned lecture tab, a video meeting, or a page with an unfinished submission may continue using resources even when you have moved to another tab. If you no longer need one of those activities, stop it normally before judging Memory Saver’s effect.
Reduce battery use with Energy Saver
Memory Saver primarily addresses computer memory. When battery runtime is the problem, turn on Energy Saver under More > Settings > Performance. Google says Energy Saver reduces the image-capture rate and other background tasks. It activates automatically when the computer is unplugged or the battery is low, and it does not activate while the computer is plugged in.

Energy Saver is available on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery installed. It can stop eligible CPU-intensive background tabs. Tabs involved in video conferencing or playing audio are not affected by that particular stopping behavior. Google also warns that video and gaming performance may change, so do not assume the setting is invisible during a live lecture, streamed demonstration, or graphics-heavy study activity.
| Choice | Effect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Saver on | Reduces some background work while the computer is on battery or the battery is low; may alter video or gaming performance. | Use for reading, writing, and research sessions where battery life is more important than continuous background activity. |
| Energy Saver off | Preserves normal background behavior. | Use when a session depends on background updates or when a performance-sensitive video or interactive activity is affected. |
Make a temporary exception
If a particular session needs normal background updates, Google documents a session-level Turn off now control from the Energy Saver icon. Use that control for the current session rather than leaving Energy Saver disabled permanently. Background updates may resume after the temporary exception ends. Turn Energy Saver back on when the battery-focused portion of your study session begins.
Use a study-friendly combination of settings
The two features solve different parts of the problem. Memory Saver lets less-used pages give up active memory and reload later. Energy Saver reduces selected background activity while the computer is running on battery. You can use both, but protect pages that require continuity and allow ordinary reference tabs to become inactive.
A practical default
- Set Memory Saver to Balanced.
- Add only the course portal, active document editor, or other essential host to Always keep these sites active.
- Turn on Energy Saver for battery-powered reading and writing.
- Use the temporary Energy Saver exception during a video conference or other session that needs normal background behavior.
When to change the Memory Saver level
- Choose Moderate if your work requires frequent switching among many references and reloads are disruptive.
- Stay with Balanced when you want a compromise without tuning the setting repeatedly.
- Choose Maximum if Chrome remains sluggish and most idle references are safe to reload.
Do not add every open tab to the always-active list. That defeats the purpose of allowing less-used pages to release memory. Add an exception when immediate continuity is more valuable than the memory it consumes.
Diagnose high memory use that continues
If Chrome remains slow after closing unnecessary tabs and configuring Memory Saver, follow Google’s troubleshooting sequence rather than guessing. The official steps are to update Chrome, close unused tabs, disable or remove extensions you do not use, and inspect Chrome Task Manager. See Google’s speed-up instructions.

Update Chrome
Open More > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for an available update on that page and presents the relaunch control when one is ready. Save study work before relaunching. The exact appearance of the page can change as Chrome updates, so follow the current labels shown in your installation.
Audit extensions
Extensions can add background pages or processing to every browsing session. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable extensions you do not need for studying, and remove ones you no longer use. Test the session after each small change so you can identify whether a particular extension was involved. Keep required accessibility, password-management, or course tools enabled, but avoid leaving experimental or forgotten extensions active by default.
Inspect Chrome Task Manager
- Open Chrome’s More menu.
- Choose More tools > Task manager.
- Sort the list by Memory footprint or the memory column shown in your version.
- Look for an unusually heavy tab, extension, or background page.
- Save work in that item before selecting End process.
Ending a task stops it. Google warns that unsaved work can be lost, so do not terminate an unfamiliar process merely because it appears high in the list. First identify the related tab or extension, save anything important, and then end only a clearly unnecessary task. A stopped page may need to reload, and an extension may need to be disabled or removed if it repeatedly causes trouble.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test preloading carefully
Chrome’s Preload pages setting is also under Settings > Performance. Preloading is intended to make browsing and searching faster by preparing pages in advance. The official documentation does not quantify its memory or battery cost and does not describe disabling it as a guaranteed fix.
If high use persists, treat preloading as an experiment:
Best Value
- Open More > Settings > Performance.
- Find Preload pages and note its current state.
- Change the setting, then use the same study workflow for a comparable session.
- Watch for practical differences such as responsiveness, unwanted page loading, or slower navigation.
- Keep the change only if it improves your particular workflow; otherwise restore the previous setting.
This test is not a benchmark. Without controlled measurements for your computer and pages, it cannot establish a universal memory or battery saving. It simply checks whether preloading interacts poorly with your own session.
Protect work before using aggressive controls
Resource-saving features are safest when your work is already stored by the site. Before switching to Maximum Memory Saver, ending a Task Manager process, or closing a large group of tabs, use the following checklist:
- Save or submit form entries.
- Confirm that documents show their latest changes as saved or synced.
- Copy temporary notes from editors that may not restore after a reload.
- Finish or pause downloads deliberately.
- Record the URLs of references you will need again.
- Close an active call or stop media only when you no longer need it.
Memory Saver’s reload behavior is not a promise that every site preserves a temporary session. Treat an inactive tab as a page that may need to reconstruct its state, not as a frozen copy of everything on screen.

A repeatable workflow for a long study session
Before studying
- Update Chrome if an update is waiting, and relaunch only after saving other work.
- Close completed research, duplicate searches, and unrelated tabs.
- Open the course portal and active documents you will actually use.
- Set Memory Saver to Balanced, unless you already know your computer needs a more aggressive level.
- Add only essential sites to Always keep these sites active.
- If unplugged, turn on Energy Saver and confirm that the session does not require uninterrupted background updates.
During the session
- Save notes and form entries before switching away from a page for a long period.
- Let ordinary reference tabs become inactive instead of adding all of them as exceptions.
- Use the Energy Saver icon’s temporary turn-off control if a specific activity requires normal background updates.
- If the computer slows, close newly completed tabs before changing several settings at once.
- Use Chrome Task Manager only after saving work and identifying the item you intend to stop.
After the session
- Submit or save assignments and close pages containing sensitive temporary data.
- Remove one-time sites from the always-active list if you no longer need them protected.
- Close tabs that will not be part of the next study block.
- Leave Energy Saver enabled for battery use, or restore your preferred state if you temporarily turned it off.
Platform limits and changing labels
Chrome’s performance-personalization controls described here are for computers. The settings page states that this personalization is not available on iOS and Android, so the desktop paths in this guide will not appear in the same form on a phone or tablet.
Energy Saver is limited to Windows, Mac, and Chromebook computers with a battery installed. A desktop computer without a battery may show different options or no automatic battery trigger. Chrome’s interface can change over time and the reviewed guidance does not specify one required Chrome version. If a label differs, open the current Settings > Performance page and look for the Memory Saver, Energy Saver, Always keep these sites active, and Preload pages controls.
What these fixes can—and cannot—promise
Google’s guidance supports the direction of each setting but does not publish a guaranteed RAM reduction, battery-life extension, or ideal tab count for a student’s workload. Results depend on the computer, the number and type of pages, extensions, media, downloads, and whether pages remain active for one of the conditions Chrome lists. A setting that helps one study session may be unnecessary for another.
Use the controls as adjustable trade-offs: allow safe-to-reload references to deactivate, protect pages that contain active work, reduce background activity on battery, and investigate the specific tab or extension that remains heavy. That approach addresses memory and battery use without promising a number Chrome’s official documentation does not provide.
