How to Fix Chrome Error 0x80070057 When Downloading or Installing

Chrome error 0x80070057 is a generic Windows “invalid parameters during installation or update” error. It does not identify one Chrome-specific fault. The practical fix depends on where the process stops: the download may be blocked, the installer may be damaged or unable to start, or installation may be stopped by permissions, security software, Windows policy, temporary files, or an earlier Chrome installation.

Use the sequence below in order. Start with the failure stage, download a fresh installer from Google, try the offline installer if needed, clear temporary files, then check account, network, security, and existing-installation conditions. These steps apply to personal and managed Windows PCs, but a work or school administrator may control several of the settings.

First, identify where Chrome fails

Do not treat every 0x80070057 message as the same event. Reproduce the problem once and note the exact point of failure. Your answer determines which branch to follow.

The download never starts, stops partway, or the browser reports a network error. Internet connection, proxy, VPN, firewall, antivirus, browser download permissions, or managed-network policy. Test another ordinary download, then retry Chrome from Google’s official download page.
The file downloads, but double-clicking it produces no window or an immediate error. Damaged installer, temporary-file access, account permissions, security software, or an existing installation. Delete the old installer, download it again, and run the new copy from a local folder.
The installer opens, then stops with 0x80070057. Invalid installation parameters, temporary files, policy restrictions, security controls, or remnants of an earlier Chrome installation. Clear temporary files and use Google’s offline installer before changing advanced settings.
Windows says Chrome is already installed, or setup behaves as if an older copy remains. Existing or damaged Chrome installation and its updater components. Uninstall Chrome through Windows, restart, and retry with a newly downloaded installer.

Write down any accompanying sentence, not only the hexadecimal code. “Download blocked,” “access denied,” “already installed,” and “installation failed” point to different remedies.

What 0x80070057 means on Windows

Microsoft Support lists 0x80070057 as “Invalid parameters during installation or update.” In plain language, a Windows setup or update component received a value, path, or condition it could not use. The same code can appear in unrelated Windows download and installation situations, so it is a clue about the installation environment rather than proof of a Chrome-only defect.

That is why registry-cleaning advice, permanent antivirus deactivation, or deleting random program folders is not a dependable first response. The reliable approach is to establish the failing stage and remove the common environmental causes one at a time.

1. Confirm the connection and basic system conditions

Test the connection independently

  1. Open a few ordinary websites in the browser. If pages are intermittently unavailable, fix the connection before retrying Chrome.
  2. Try a small, unrelated download. A failure there indicates a broader browser, network, proxy, or security problem rather than a Chrome installer problem.
  3. If you are on a company, school, hotel, or public network, ask whether software downloads are filtered. Managed networks can block installer hosts even when normal web browsing works.

Check Chrome’s current requirements

Open Google’s current Chrome system-requirements information and confirm that your Windows edition and hardware meet it. Requirements can change, and the official page is the correct authority for the version you are downloading. Also check that the system drive has enough free space for the installer and the temporary files created during setup; Windows may fail setup when a drive is nearly full even though the download itself succeeds.

Check the date, time, and storage location

Make sure Windows has the correct date and time and that the Downloads folder is available on a local drive. A redirected, disconnected, encrypted, or nearly full location can prevent the small online installer from creating its temporary files. If Downloads is synchronized or redirected by an organization, save the installer to a simple local folder such as your desktop for the test.

2. Download a fresh installer from Google

Google Chrome Help recommends verifying the connection and system requirements, downloading the installation file again, and using an offline installer when a retry fails. Follow that sequence rather than reusing a file that may have been interrupted or cached.

  1. Close extra download windows and remove the old Chrome installer from the Downloads folder. Do not run a copy whose name indicates an incomplete or duplicate download.
  2. Go to Google’s official Chrome download page by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Avoid repackaged installers from file-sharing sites.
  3. Start a new download and wait for it to finish. If the browser asks where to save the file, choose a local folder you can access.
  4. Right-click the newly downloaded file, choose its properties, and confirm that Windows shows a completed file rather than a partial download. Do not alter compatibility settings unless an administrator or official support article directs you to.
  5. Run that new copy once. If it produces the same code, continue to the offline-installer step instead of repeatedly launching the same file.

If the browser cannot download the file at all, skip ahead to the network and security section. If the file downloads but cannot launch, continue with temporary-file and permissions checks.

3. Use Google’s offline installer when the online setup fails

The standard Chrome installer is a small setup program that obtains additional files during installation. Google provides an offline installation path for cases in which the normal retry does not work. Use the offline installer intended for your Windows computer and download it only from Google’s official Chrome Help or download pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the failed setup window.
  2. Delete or move the previous installer so you cannot accidentally open it again.
  3. Download the appropriate offline package from Google.
  4. Save it to a local folder, then start it once the download has completed.
  5. Allow the process time to finish; do not launch multiple installers simultaneously.

An offline package can bypass a failure that occurs while the online setup is fetching components. It does not bypass Windows permissions, S mode, a managed-device policy, or a security product that blocks the installer, so those checks still matter if the offline attempt fails.

4. Clear Windows temporary files safely

Microsoft’s guidance for this error condition includes clearing temporary files and retrying through the official vendor download path. Remove temporary data, not application folders or registry entries.

  1. Save your work and close Chrome windows and other installers.
  2. Press Windows+R, enter %temp%, and press Enter.
  3. Select files that Windows allows you to delete. If a file is in use, choose to skip it rather than forcing removal.
  4. Empty the Recycle Bin if you need to reclaim the space, then restart Windows.
  5. Download a fresh installer after the restart and test it once.

You can also use Windows’ built-in temporary-file cleanup in Settings. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files; in Windows 10, the wording is under Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories before removing anything. Do not select personal files or a previous Windows installation unless you understand the consequences. The goal is to remove disposable setup data, not to erase Chrome’s user profile or unrelated documents.

5. Check administrator rights and Windows policy

Standard account versus administrator account

Chrome can be installed under different account contexts. If you use a standard Windows account, the installer may require administrator approval or an administrator-specific installation path. When User Account Control appears, verify that the approving account belongs to a trusted administrator and that the prompt is for the installer you just downloaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the fresh installer and choose Run as administrator only when you are authorized to install software on that PC.
  2. Enter the administrator credentials if Windows requests them.
  3. If your organization does not allow users to elevate installations, stop and ask the device administrator to perform the installation through its approved process.

Do not turn off User Account Control to work around the error. Lowering that protection changes the security posture of the entire computer and does not address a damaged download.

Windows in S mode

Windows S mode restricts applications to its permitted store-based workflow. Google’s Chrome installation guidance includes a separate path for S-mode devices. If Windows displays an S-mode restriction, follow that documented guidance or ask the device owner whether leaving S mode is allowed. Do not attempt unofficial bypasses; changing out of S mode can be a one-way decision on some editions.

Managed devices and policy messages

A work or school computer may enforce application allowlists, software deployment tools, proxy settings, or installer restrictions. A message such as “managed by your organization,” a blocked change, or a request for credentials you do not have is evidence of policy, not a reason to delete system files. Record the message and contact the administrator.

6. Check firewall, antivirus, proxy, VPN, and network controls

Google’s installation guidance identifies firewall, antivirus, proxy, and administrator settings as possible causes of download or setup failures. Security controls can block either the browser download or the Chrome installer’s connection to Google.

  1. Disconnect from a VPN temporarily if your organization permits that test, then retry on the normal connection. If the error disappears, the VPN or its policy needs review.
  2. Check Windows proxy settings at Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. A proxy you did not configure, or a proxy that is unavailable, can prevent setup from reaching Google. On a managed PC, do not remove a required organizational proxy.
  3. Review the firewall or security product’s blocked-events log. Look for the browser, the installer, or Google’s updater components rather than disabling protection blindly.
  4. If policy allows, perform one short test with a security product’s download or application-control feature paused. Re-enable it immediately after the test. Never leave protection disabled while browsing or installing unrelated software.
  5. When the log confirms a block, create the narrowest permitted exception for the official Chrome installer or its required updater components. Follow your security product’s and organization’s procedures.

Do not add broad exclusions for the entire Downloads folder, the Windows directory, or all executable files. If an exception is prohibited, have an administrator package or approve Chrome instead.

7. Remove an existing or damaged Chrome installation

Setup may fail when an earlier Chrome installation is incomplete or its updater state is inconsistent. Use Windows’ normal uninstall process before attempting a repair.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  2. Search for Google Chrome, select its menu, and choose Uninstall. Follow the prompts. If you want to preserve your browsing profile, do not select an option that removes local browsing data unless you have a backup or have synchronized the data.
  3. Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
  4. Check the Installed apps list again. If Chrome is still listed, or Windows reports that the uninstall cannot complete, stop before deleting folders manually and ask an administrator or use Google’s official uninstall guidance.
  5. Download a fresh standard or offline installer and run it once.

Avoid deleting arbitrary registry keys, Program Files folders, or user-profile directories. Those locations can contain data shared with other components, and an incorrect deletion can create a different problem without fixing the original parameter error.

8. Use a controlled retry sequence

After each change, make one clean attempt so you know which condition mattered. This sequence prevents multiple simultaneous changes from hiding the cause.

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Confirm the connection and, if applicable, the approved proxy or VPN state.
  3. Download a new installer from Google and save it locally.
  4. Run the standard installer once.
  5. If it fails, clear temporary files, restart, and try the offline installer.
  6. If it still fails, check administrator rights, S mode, security logs, and an existing installation.

If one attempt succeeds, delete obsolete installer copies and restore any security setting you changed for testing. Do not keep multiple setup processes running.

9. Match symptoms to the next branch

Symptom after the basic retry Next branch What to record
No download and no file appears. Test another download, then inspect proxy, VPN, firewall, antivirus, and managed-network restrictions. Network type, browser message, and whether other downloads work.
A file appears but is unusually small, incomplete, or will not open. Delete it, clear temporary files, and download again from Google. Try a different permitted network if available. Whether the failure occurs in every browser or only one.
The installer opens but immediately requests credentials or shows access denied. Use an authorized administrator account or ask the device administrator to install it. Account type and the exact User Account Control or policy text.
The online installer fails but the offline installer works. Keep the successful installation and report the network or updater restriction if this is a managed PC. Which installer path succeeded.
Both installers fail after Chrome was previously installed. Complete the normal uninstall, restart, and retry. Escalate if Windows cannot remove the existing entry. Installed-apps status and any uninstall error.
The code appears only on one managed computer. Ask the administrator to review application-control, proxy, and security logs. Windows edition, account context, time of failure, and policy message.

10. What not to do

  • Do not assume the code proves malware or a Chrome defect.
  • Do not download an installer from an unofficial mirror to avoid a blocked official download.
  • Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, User Account Control, or proxy protection.
  • Do not run registry cleaners as a required step; the official guidance does not require them.
  • Do not delete random registry keys, updater folders, or Chrome profile data.
  • Do not repeatedly launch an old installer after you have downloaded a new one.
  • Do not bypass a company or school policy without authorization.

11. When to escalate and what to provide

If the official standard and offline installers both fail after the temporary-file, permission, policy, and security checks, escalation is more productive than increasingly invasive edits. Contact Google support for Chrome-specific installation help or your device administrator for a managed-PC restriction.

Include the exact Windows edition, whether the account is an administrator, whether the computer is in S mode, the stage at which setup stops, the complete message surrounding 0x80070057, whether the standard or offline installer was used, and whether another download succeeds. Note any firewall, antivirus, proxy, VPN, or application-control event at the same time. Do not send passwords, recovery codes, or private browsing data.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is category-based for at least two days and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary.

Final safety check

Once Chrome installs, reopen your security controls, remove temporary exceptions, and keep the installer you used only if you trust and need it. If the problem returns on a managed network, preserve the stage and message details rather than changing system files at random; those details tell the administrator whether the next fix belongs to the connection, policy, permissions, or Chrome installation itself.
