Before changing anything, write down the exact action that triggers the message. The stage determines which repair is safest.

1. Check the basic prerequisites
- Use a stable internet connection and avoid switching networks while the installer is downloading.
- Confirm that you are downloading Chrome from Google’s official Chrome download page, not a mirror or bundled installer.
- Close any existing Chrome windows and save work in other applications.
- On a managed work or school computer, ask the administrator whether software installation is restricted.

- Delete the Chrome installer you previously downloaded.
- Open a new browser window and download the current installer from Google’s official source.
- Wait for the download to finish completely before opening it.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator only if a normal launch fails or Windows reports a permission problem. Approve the User Account Control prompt only when you initiated the download.
- Retry the installation and record the exact point at which 0x80070057 appears.
Running as administrator should be a targeted test, not a permanent way to run Chrome. If the elevated attempt succeeds, the account or installation location may have a permissions restriction that an administrator should review.
3. Use Google’s offline installer when the normal installer fails
Google provides an offline Chrome installer for cases in which the small web installer cannot download the required files or cannot communicate correctly with the update service. Download the offline package from Google, then run it while connected to the internet only if the package’s instructions require a final check. Do not combine an unofficial repackaged installer with this step. If an offline package works, the original problem was likely in the web download, the network path, or the web installer’s ability to retrieve its components.
4. Remove a partial Chrome installation and reinstall
If Chrome appears in the installed-app list but will not update or launch, a partial installation may be blocking the new one. Save bookmarks and other data you need before removing the browser.

- Find Google Chrome, select the menu beside it, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh official installer and try again.
If Windows cannot uninstall Chrome, do not delete random folders or registry entries. Record the uninstall message and ask an administrator or Google support for the appropriate cleanup procedure, particularly on a managed computer.
Fix Chrome update failure 0x80070057
Check Windows Compatibility Mode
Chrome’s update troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out Windows Compatibility Mode. A compatibility setting intended for an older application can interfere with a current updater.
- Close Chrome.
- Right-click the Chrome shortcut you normally use and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- If Run this program in compatibility mode for is selected, clear it unless your administrator has deliberately configured it.
- Also review any forced administrator or reduced-color settings that were added for troubleshooting.
- Select Apply, then OK, and retry Chrome’s update.
If the update page reports that Windows is unsupported, check the Windows version and edition against Google’s current requirements. Do not attempt to bypass an unsupported operating system with compatibility settings; install supported Windows updates or consult the device administrator instead.

Use Chrome’s built-in update check
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
- Allow the check to finish.
- If Chrome asks to relaunch, save your work and select Relaunch.
If the check fails with 0x80070057, note whether Chrome remains usable. A browser that works but cannot update points toward the updater, permissions, compatibility, or security software; a browser that will not start may require the clean reinstall path above.

Repair Windows Update when the code appears there
When 0x80070057 appears in Windows Update, fix Windows Update before repeatedly reinstalling Chrome. Microsoft recommends starting with the Windows Update troubleshooter and System File Checker.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply the recommended repair, then restart Windows if prompted.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows versions use slightly different labels. Search Settings for “troubleshoot” or “Windows Update troubleshooter” if the path differs.
2. Run System File Checker
System File Checker (SFC) verifies protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid local source is available.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because it appears paused.
- Read the final message, restart the PC, and try Windows Update again.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. Keep that result with your notes; it determines whether an administrator or Microsoft support needs to continue the repair.

3. Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged update cache can cause invalid-parameter and corrupted-file errors. This procedure stops the Windows Update service, clears only the contents of the cache folder, and starts the service again. It requires an elevated Command Prompt and should be performed carefully.
- Save your work and open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Enter
net stop wuauservand press Enter. Wait for confirmation that the service stopped. - Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder, not the Windows folder itself. If a file is in use, return to the Command Prompt and confirm that the service actually stopped.
- Return to the elevated Command Prompt and enter
net start wuauserv. - Restart Windows and run Windows Update again.
Do not delete other Windows directories or change service startup settings as part of this test. On a work or school PC, let the administrator perform the cache reset because policy-controlled update services may be configured differently.
Check permissions and security software safely
Google’s Chrome installation guidance notes that antivirus software can block installation and that firewall exceptions may be needed for Google Update. Security controls can also be enforced by an organization, so distinguish a personal PC from a managed device before changing them.
Use reversible tests only
- Check whether your account is allowed to install software in the selected location.
- Confirm that the Windows date, time, and time zone are correct; incorrect system settings can interfere with update validation.
- Review your security product’s event or quarantine log for a blocked Chrome installer or Google Update component.
- If you control the PC, temporarily pause the relevant protection only for the installation test, then turn it back on immediately.
- Use a temporary, narrowly scoped firewall exception only when the security product’s documentation or an administrator directs you to do so.
Never leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled while browsing or downloading. If disabling protection changes the result, restore it and ask the security vendor or system administrator for a permanent allow rule rather than leaving the computer exposed.
Decide whether the problem is Chrome-only or system-wide
Try one unrelated, trusted Windows application update or installation. If it succeeds, focus on Chrome’s installer, updater, compatibility setting, or partial installation. If several applications fail with similar parameter or permission messages, continue with Windows repair and involve an administrator.

If the computer recently lost power, was restored from an image, or experienced a failed Windows upgrade, mention that event. It can explain corrupted servicing files or a partially completed installation. Avoid attempting increasingly invasive repairs until the failure scope is documented and you have a recovery plan.
