How to Fix Chrome Error 0x80070057 During Installation

Chrome error 0x80070057 means Windows received an invalid parameter while setup was running. The code is generic, so it does not identify one Chrome-specific fault. In practice, the quickest safe sequence is to verify connectivity and requirements, download a fresh installer, switch to Google’s official offline installer, then check for an existing all-users installation, security-software blocks, proxy restrictions, Windows compatibility, disk space and administrator permissions.

Use the least-destructive steps first. Do not delete your Chrome profile or edit the registry merely because this code appears. If setup still fails, the installer log can show a more precise cause than the message on screen.

What Chrome error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft defines HRESULT 0x80070057 as E_INVALIDARG, meaning “Invalid parameter value.” Windows also maps the condition to ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, described as “The parameter is incorrect.” During Chrome setup, that tells you that an argument passed to Windows or the installer was unacceptable; it does not prove that Chrome itself is damaged or that malware is involved.

The same code can be produced by several different conditions: a damaged installer download, a conflicting Chrome installation, a blocked updater request, an unsupported Windows configuration, insufficient storage or permissions, or a network and proxy policy that prevents setup from receiving the values it expects. Treat the number as a starting point for troubleshooting, not as a diagnosis.

Before changing anything

  • Sign in to Windows with an account that can install applications, or have an administrator available for the later steps.
  • Save open work and close Chrome windows, download managers and other installers.
  • Make sure the computer is connected to the internet for the standard installer. If the connection is unreliable, plan to use the offline package instead.
  • Check that the Windows edition and version meet Chrome’s current system requirements. Requirements can change, and an unsupported version can fail even when the download itself succeeds.
  • Keep a few hundred megabytes of free space on the system drive so the installer can unpack temporary files. If the drive is nearly full, free space before retrying.

Choose a remedy by risk and purpose

Remedy What it changes Network dependence Permission scope Diagnostic value
Fresh standard download Replaces a possibly incomplete setup file; does not remove Chrome Requires a working connection while setup downloads components Uses the installer’s normal scope Low; confirms whether the first download was faulty
Official offline installer Uses a complete installation package instead of downloading during setup Only the initial package download needs a connection Google provides separate one-user and multiple-user options Medium; separates download or updater problems from local setup problems
Remove an existing all-users installation Clears a conflicting system-wide Chrome installation before reinstalling Not required to uninstall; required for a new download System-level; administrator approval may be required Medium; useful when per-user and system-wide installs conflict
Security and policy checks Allows the updater or installer to complete under your existing policies Depends on the policy or proxy involved May require an administrator or security-policy owner High when an exception or policy change makes the failure reproducible
Installer log and verbose logging Collects the operation details hidden by the short error message None for reading an existing log Usually per-user, although access depends on the Windows account Highest; identifies the failing stage or component

Step 1: Verify the connection and Windows requirements

Test the connection outside the installer

Open a normal browser window and visit several unrelated sites. If pages intermittently fail, captive-portal authentication is pending, or a corporate proxy requires sign-in, fix that condition first. A download that ends early can leave a setup file that looks complete but cannot be processed.

On a managed computer, ask the administrator whether application downloads, Google update traffic or executable files are restricted. Do not bypass a company policy on your own; the policy owner may need to perform the installation.

Confirm the Windows version is supported

Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version. Compare them with Chrome’s current requirements shown on Google’s download and help pages. If the computer is running an unsupported release, updating Windows is the durable fix; repeatedly downloading Chrome will not make an unsupported operating system compatible.

Check storage and account rights

In Settings > System > Storage, verify that the system drive has room for the installer and its temporary files. Then confirm that your account can install desktop applications. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt for administrator credentials, you need those credentials to continue. A standard user can often install a per-user copy, but a system-wide installation requires elevated rights.

Step 2: Download a fresh standard installer

  1. Delete the failed setup file, or move it out of the Downloads folder so you cannot accidentally run the same damaged copy.
  2. Use Google’s official Chrome download page and start a new download. Do not use a repacked installer from a file-sharing site.
  3. Wait for the download to finish completely. If your browser shows a warning, verify that the file came from Google before allowing it.
  4. Run the new installer once. Avoid launching several copies at the same time.
  5. If the same 0x80070057 message returns, record whether it appears before any progress is shown or after the installer begins downloading. That timing helps distinguish a local package problem from an updater or policy problem.

This retry is intentionally non-destructive: it does not remove your existing Chrome installation or profile. If it succeeds, open Settings > About Chrome afterward and let Chrome check for updates.

Step 3: Use Google’s official offline installer

When the normal installer fails, Google recommends its offline installer. The offline package contains the installation files so setup does not have to fetch every component during the run. This is especially useful when a proxy, firewall or unstable connection interrupts the standard updater.

  1. From Google’s Chrome Help or download pages, choose the offline installer option rather than the regular web installer.
  2. Select the package for one user if Chrome is intended only for your Windows account. Select the multiple users package when Chrome must be available to every account on the computer.
  3. Save the package locally, preferably in a folder you can find easily, and allow the download to complete before opening it.
  4. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator only when you are installing for all users or Windows requests elevation. For a per-user installation, running with normal rights avoids unnecessary system-wide changes.
  5. Follow the prompts and wait for setup to finish. Do not shut down the computer while files are being copied.

The two packages use different installation scopes. Choosing the wrong scope can reproduce a conflict with an existing installation, so match the package to who needs Chrome on the computer.

Step 4: Remove a conflicting all-users installation

Google identifies an existing Chrome installation for all users as a reason a new installation can fail. If Chrome is already installed system-wide, uninstall that current Chrome app before installing another version.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows releases).
  2. Find Google Chrome, select the menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
  3. Complete the uninstall wizard. If Windows requests administrator credentials, have an administrator approve the action.
  4. Restart Windows, then run the fresh or offline installer that matches your intended scope.

Uninstalling the application is separate from deleting your browsing profile. Read each prompt carefully; do not select an option to remove profile data unless you deliberately want to erase local bookmarks, settings and other stored information. If Chrome is not listed, do not start deleting folders at random; continue with the security, policy and log checks below.

Step 5: Check the blockers that commonly stop setup

Antivirus and firewall interference

Security software can block the installer or its updater from creating files, starting a child process or reaching Google’s servers. Temporarily pause protection only if your organization’s policy allows it and you understand the risk. A safer approach is to add the relevant GoogleUpdater program to the security product’s exceptions or allow-list, following that product’s documented procedure.

Run the installer once after the exception is applied. Re-enable protection immediately after the test, whether installation succeeds or fails. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a permanent workaround.

Proxy, VPN and network policy

A proxy that requires authentication, filters executable downloads or serves an incomplete response can cause setup to receive an invalid value. Review Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and compare the configuration with the one required by your network administrator. On a work or school network, the administrator may need to permit the download; changing policy settings yourself can violate local rules.

If the offline installer works on the same computer, the normal web installer was likely being affected by its download or updater path. Keep the offline package as the practical installation method, then ask the network owner to investigate the standard path.

Windows S mode

Windows in S mode restricts which applications can be installed. If setup reports that the app is not permitted, open Settings > System > Activation and check the S-mode status. Switching out of S mode is a Windows decision with lasting consequences; review Microsoft’s current terms and your organization’s policy before proceeding. If the computer is managed, contact the administrator instead of attempting the change.

Insufficient permissions

Use an administrator account for a multiple-user installation. If you are on a standard account, ask an administrator to perform the install or choose a legitimate per-user package when that meets your needs. Repeatedly right-clicking and choosing Run as administrator will not overcome a policy that forbids software installation.

Unsupported edition or damaged Windows components

If the Windows release is outside Chrome’s supported requirements, update Windows or use a supported computer. If other applications also fail to install with invalid-parameter messages, the problem may be broader than Chrome; document those failures for your administrator or Microsoft support rather than changing unrelated registry values.

Step 6: Read the Chrome installer log

The visible error is short, but Chromium documents a default Windows installer log at:

%TMP%chrome_installer.log

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter %TMP%, and press Enter.
  2. Open chrome_installer.log in Notepad or another plain-text editor. If the file is not present, run the installer once more and check the folder immediately afterward.
  3. Search for terms such as error, failed, permission, proxy or access denied. Note the first failure and the component named beside it, not just the final summary line.
  4. Keep a copy of the log if you need help from an administrator or the Chrome Help Forum. Remove unrelated personal information before sharing it publicly.

Chromium also documents the --verbose-logging command-line option. To use it, open Command Prompt, change to the folder containing the installer, and run the installer with that option appended, for example:

ChromeSetup.exe --verbose-logging

The exact filename may differ for an offline package. Type the actual filename shown in File Explorer. Verbose output can produce more detail about the stage that failed; it does not itself repair the installation.

Step 7: Retry in a controlled order

After correcting one suspected blocker, change only that condition and run the installer again. A controlled retry prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding the real cause.

  1. Confirm the connection, Windows requirements, free space and account type.
  2. Run a fresh standard installer.
  3. If it fails, use the correct one-user or multiple-user offline installer.
  4. If Chrome was installed for all users, uninstall that application, restart Windows and retry the matching offline package.
  5. Check security exceptions and proxy policy, then repeat the install with protection restored afterward.
  6. Capture the log and, if useful, rerun with --verbose-logging.

When to stop and get help

Contact your system administrator when the computer is managed, installation requires elevated credentials, S mode or a proxy policy is involved, or security software cannot be modified by you. Provide the Windows edition and version, whether you used the standard or offline package, whether Chrome was previously installed for all users, the point at which setup stopped and the relevant lines from %TMP%chrome_installer.log.

If you control the computer and the documented steps still fail, Google directs users to the Chrome Help Forum. Include the exact code 0x80070057, avoid posting personal data from the log, and describe every installer variant you tried. That information is more useful than repeating the same download.

What the error does not tell you

  • It does not identify a single Chrome bug.
  • It does not prove that Chrome is infected or that Windows needs a registry cleaner.
  • It does not justify deleting your profile, random Google folders or unrelated Windows files.
  • It does not guarantee that an offline installer will work when permissions, policy or Windows compatibility are the actual issue.
