The usual cause is that ChatGPT and your ordinary Chrome window are using different browser states. The ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser has its own state, and a cloud browser does not inherit your personal Chrome tabs, cookies, extensions, history or sign-ins. If the task depends on a tab you already have open, your logged-in session or a Chrome extension, use the Codex Chrome extension and approve access to the page. Use the desktop app’s built-in browser instead when you simply want ChatGPT to browse a page inside the app.
Why ChatGPT cannot see the tab you already opened
Opening a page in Chrome does not automatically make that page available to every ChatGPT browsing surface. There are three separate contexts to distinguish:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your local Chrome profile: the browser window where your tabs, cookies, extensions, browsing history and existing website sign-ins live.
- The ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser: browsing stays inside the app and uses its own browser state.
- A cloud or remote browser: a separate environment that does not use your personal Chrome tabs, cookies, extensions, saved passwords, history or current sign-ins.
That separation explains several common symptoms: ChatGPT opens a fresh browser, asks you to sign in again, cannot find the tab you were viewing, or shows no browser controls at all. It is generally a state and authorization issue rather than a problem with the web page itself.
Choose the browser surface that matches the task
Start by deciding whether ChatGPT needs your existing Chrome state or only needs to browse a page independently. The correct choice prevents most failed reconnection attempts.

| Surface | Access to your existing Chrome tabs | Where it runs | Cookies and signed-in sessions | Permissions and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT desktop app built-in browser | No; it has separate browser state | Inside the ChatGPT desktop app | Uses its own state, not your ordinary Chrome session | Site tools appear only on webpages that provide them and require approval; access can depend on plan, region, device and workspace settings |
| Codex Chrome extension | Yes, when the task requires the profile and tabs you already use | Your local Chrome browser | Can work with the relevant existing profile and signed-in session after you authorize the page | The extension or sidebar may be unavailable because of plan, region, browser, device or workspace policy |
| Cloud or remote browser | No; it cannot see personal Chrome tabs | Remotely, outside your local Chrome profile | Does not inherit your personal cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins | A website may block cloud automation; those restrictions are set by the site |
One detail causes particular confusion: site tools are currently available only in the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser, not in ordinary Chrome. That does not mean the built-in browser can see your Chrome tabs. It means the tool is tied to that app surface. For a task that must operate on a tab already open in Chrome, the documented route is the Codex Chrome extension.
Step-by-step fix
1. Classify what ChatGPT needs
Ask yourself which of these describes the job:
- You want ChatGPT to open and read a public page inside ChatGPT. Choose the desktop app’s built-in browser.
- You need the tab already open in Chrome, a website where you are signed in, your cookies, or one of your Chrome extensions. Choose the Codex Chrome extension.
- You are using a remote or cloud browser and expect it to inherit local tabs or logins. That is not supported; switch to local Chrome for this task or open the page directly in the supported app surface.
Do not keep reconnecting the wrong surface. A built-in browser cannot be made to share your ordinary Chrome profile merely by refreshing the page.
2. Open the target page in the right place
- For independent browsing, open the ChatGPT desktop app and use its built-in browser to navigate to the page.
- For an existing Chrome tab, open that tab in your normal Chrome profile and use the Codex Chrome extension or its sidebar from that browser.
- Keep the target page active while you begin the request. This makes it clear which page you intend ChatGPT to use and avoids authorizing a different tab by mistake.
The extension route is the relevant one when the page’s current login, cookies, open-tab state or Chrome extensions matter.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
3. Approve the website and page permission
When ChatGPT or the extension displays a website permission prompt, approve access for the page you want to use. Site tools are page-specific: a permission or tool provided on one webpage does not automatically carry over to another page or another website.
If you move from one domain to another, expect to review the permission again. If you switch tabs, confirm that the newly active tab is the one you intend to expose. A successful authorization on one page is not evidence that every tab is available.
4. Verify the accounts and workspace
Check both sides of the connection:
- Confirm that ChatGPT is signed in to the intended account and workspace.
- Confirm that the website in Chrome is signed in to the intended account, rather than a second personal, work or guest account.
- If the page opens in a new browser context and asks for credentials again, treat that as evidence of separate browser state, not proof that your original Chrome login failed.
A sign-in stored in ordinary Chrome is not automatically present in the built-in or cloud browser. If the task requires the existing authenticated session, return to the local Chrome extension path.

5. Test with a simple request
After authorization, use a narrowly scoped request such as asking ChatGPT to identify the title of the active page. If that succeeds, proceed to the larger task. If it fails, note whether the problem is that the extension is missing, the permission prompt never appeared, the wrong account is active, or the website refused the browser.

What to do when the Chrome extension or sidebar is missing
The extension and related browser experiences are not guaranteed to appear for every user. Availability can depend on your plan, region, device, browser and workspace configuration.

Check the local conditions
- Use a supported desktop setup rather than assuming a mobile browser will expose the same controls.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that is supposed to have the feature.
- Check whether you are in a managed work or school workspace. An administrator may disable the extension, Browser Use, website access, history access, file transfers or saved approvals.
- Make sure you are looking in the Chrome profile where the target tab and its login actually exist. A second Chrome profile can look like a missing session even when the tab is open elsewhere.
If the feature is absent after these checks, do not infer that repeatedly reconnecting will make it appear. OpenAI advises contacting support when the relevant authorization and permission checks are complete but app controls remain unavailable.
When a website blocks the cloud browser
Some sites refuse cloud automation. In that situation, ChatGPT may be able to browse other websites while failing on this particular one, or it may open a page without being able to complete an action. OpenAI describes these restrictions as being set by the website, not by ChatGPT.
Use local Chrome for a site-specific block
- Open the site directly in your own Chrome profile.
- Use the Codex Chrome extension if the task needs your existing login, cookies or open tab.
- Approve the site’s permission prompt on that page.
- If the site still does not provide the required capability, try another supported site or complete that step manually.
Switching from the cloud browser to local Chrome changes the browser context; it does not bypass a website’s own access rules. You may still need to satisfy the site’s login, security check or organization policy.

Common symptoms and the correct branch
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT opens a clean browser instead of the tab you had open | The built-in or cloud browser has separate state | Use the Codex Chrome extension for the existing tab, or browse independently in the built-in browser |
| The page asks you to sign in again | Your local Chrome cookies were not carried into the new browser context | Use the local Chrome extension with the profile that is already signed in |
| The extension or sidebar is not visible | Feature availability or workspace policy may restrict it | Check account, plan, region, device, browser and administrator settings; contact support if the controls remain missing |
| A tool worked on one page but not another | Site tools and approvals are page-specific | Open the second page and approve access there |
| Cloud browsing fails only on one website | The website may block cloud automation | Open the page in local Chrome and use the extension, or use another supported site |
| ChatGPT sees a different account than Chrome | The two browser contexts are signed in separately | Verify the active ChatGPT workspace and the website account before retrying |
Privacy and security checks before granting access
Granting a browser tool access to a page can expose the page’s contents to the task you requested. Before approving a prompt:
- Confirm the domain and active tab are correct.
- Close or switch away from unrelated tabs that contain private information if you are sharing the browser context on screen.
- Use the intended Chrome profile; do not assume a work profile and personal profile have the same permissions.
- Remember that a cloud browser does not have your local cookies or saved passwords, while a local extension is specifically used when existing Chrome state matters.
- Review a new page’s permission separately; approval on one site does not grant blanket access to other sites.
These checks do not change which surfaces are technically compatible, but they reduce the chance of authorizing the wrong page or account.
A short diagnostic checklist
Work through this list in order:
- Decide whether the task needs an existing Chrome tab, cookies, login or extension.
- If it does, move to the Codex Chrome extension in the local Chrome profile that contains that state.
- If it does not, use the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser.
- Open the exact page and keep it active.
- Approve the permission prompt for that page.
- Verify the ChatGPT account, workspace and website account.
- Test by asking for the active page’s title or another harmless fact.
- If the extension is missing, check plan, region, device, browser and workspace restrictions.
- If only one site fails in the cloud browser, use local Chrome or another supported site.
- If controls remain absent after authorization and policy checks, contact support instead of repeatedly reconnecting.
What ChatGPT still cannot do through the wrong browser
Changing the wording of your prompt cannot merge browser states. Asking the built-in browser to “look at my Chrome tabs” does not transfer your local tabs, cookies or sign-ins. Likewise, a cloud browser cannot be expected to know which account is active in your personal Chrome profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical distinction is simple: use the built-in browser for browsing that starts inside ChatGPT; use the local Chrome extension when the task starts from an existing Chrome session. Page-level approval and workspace policy apply in either workflow.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact support after you have selected the appropriate surface, confirmed the intended account and workspace, approved the relevant page permission, and checked whether your organization restricts browser access. Include the symptom that remains—for example, a missing sidebar, a permission prompt that never appears, or a control that stays unavailable—rather than repeatedly reconnecting the same browser.
If the failure occurs only on one website in a cloud browser, first treat it as a possible site restriction and use local Chrome. Support is more appropriate when the documented feature itself is missing or fails across pages that should be available.
