Reload the challenge, verify JavaScript and browser support, test extension and cookie settings, then check whether your network blocks the CAPTCHA provider. If the problem affects only one website, its integration or Content Security Policy (CSP) may be wrong and the site owner must fix it.
First identify what is actually failing
“CAPTCHA image not showing” can describe different symptoms. The entire widget may be absent; a checkbox may never appear; the widget may render while an image or audio challenge remains blank; or the page may show an unusual-traffic warning instead of a challenge. These cases have overlapping causes but different fixes.
- Widget missing: the provider script may not have loaded, JavaScript may be disabled, or the site may have rendered the widget incorrectly.
- Widget present but challenge blank: an image, frame, cookie, or secondary request may be blocked by an extension, browser privacy setting, firewall, or CSP.
- “Network error” or “script error”: the provider resource may be unreachable. hCaptcha specifically documents that a firewall can block
api.js(hCaptcha configuration). - Unusual-traffic warning: this is an abuse or traffic assessment, not necessarily a missing image. Google lists shared-network abuse, a recently assigned suspicious IP, and heavy attack on a destination site as possible causes (Google’s help page).
Fixes for visitors, in the order to try them
1. Reload the page and request a new challenge
Use the browser’s reload button first. If a visible image challenge is stale, distorted, or simply too difficult, use the CAPTCHA’s own reload control. Google’s end-user guidance says, “Just click the reload button to get a new CAPTCHA” (Google Support). Avoid repeatedly submitting a half-loaded form; wait for the new challenge to finish.
2. Update the browser and enable JavaScript
CAPTCHA widgets depend on JavaScript. Confirm that JavaScript is allowed for the affected site, then update the browser and reopen the page. Google’s published baseline covers the two newest major versions of desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Chromium Edge, plus mobile Chrome, Safari, and the Android native browser (reCAPTCHA Help). That is Google’s guidance, not a promise that every provider supports exactly the same versions.

Also temporarily disable a browser plugin that could alter scripts or frames, then reload. Google explicitly recommends testing with conflicting plugins disabled (Google Support). Re-enable extensions one at a time after the test so you do not leave unrelated protection disabled.
3. Test privacy, ad-blocking, and cookie controls
Open the page in a private window with extensions disabled, or use a fresh browser profile. If the CAPTCHA appears there, an extension or site-specific privacy rule is the likely cause. Check your content blocker, tracking protection, and cross-site cookie settings for the CAPTCHA provider’s domain.
For hCaptcha, the accessibility troubleshooting guidance says aggressive blockers and cross-site cookie restrictions can interfere with its accessibility cookie and recommends allowing hcaptcha.com where relevant (hCaptcha Accessibility). Apply an exception only to the affected site or provider, test, and restore your previous setting if it made no difference.
4. Check the network and firewall
Confirm that the device is online, then try the same page on another network, such as a phone hotspot. A managed office, school, VPN gateway, DNS filter, antivirus web shield, or local firewall can block the provider’s script, iframe, or image host. hCaptcha documents both network-error and script-error conditions; its configuration documentation notes that a firewall blocking api.js can produce a script error (hCaptcha Configuration).

If the CAPTCHA works on another network, give your administrator the exact blocked hostname and browser-console error rather than permanently weakening the firewall. Do not assume that allowing the website’s own domain also allows the CAPTCHA provider’s domains.
5. Compare a supported browser and device
Try a current browser from a different browser family, then a second device if available. This distinguishes a browser profile problem from a site or network problem. Record whether the entire widget is missing, whether only the challenge asset is blank, and whether the result changes when extensions, cookies, or networks change.

6. Handle an unusual-traffic page separately
When Google says your computer is sending automated queries, the challenge may be an IP-reputation or traffic-control response rather than a broken image. Google suggests checking its reCAPTCHA test page and trying again later. If a normal CAPTCHA appears on the test page, the originating website may have a configuration problem (Google Support).
7. Contact the website when only one site fails
If other CAPTCHA-protected sites work in the same browser and network, report the failing URL, browser version, time, screenshot, and console error to the site operator. Google notes that a website may have integrated reCAPTCHA incorrectly (Google Support). The operator, not the visitor, must correct a broken site key, rendering call, CSP, or server configuration.
Website-owner diagnosis
Inspect the browser console and Network panel
Reproduce the failure with developer tools open. Look for blocked or failed requests, HTTP status codes, CSP violations, mixed-content warnings, and JavaScript exceptions. Verify that the provider script loaded before the widget-rendering code and that the challenge iframe or image requests are not being cancelled by a content filter.
Google’s FAQ recommends adding the reCAPTCHA script pattern /recaptcha__.+.js$ to the browser’s JavaScript ignore list while debugging unrelated site code (Google reCAPTCHA FAQ).
Verify HTTPS and rendering configuration
Google’s v2 display documentation requires the API resource to load over HTTPS and describes automatic and explicit widget rendering (reCAPTCHA v2 display). Check that your site key belongs to the hostname, the script is included once, and your code either lets the widget render automatically or calls explicit rendering after the container exists.
For hCaptcha’s standard widget, the developer documentation requires the provider script, a container using the h-captcha class, and a public site key (hCaptcha Configuration). A missing class, empty key, duplicate initialization, or code that runs before the container is inserted can leave a blank area.

Audit Content Security Policy
A restrictive CSP can allow your page to load while silently blocking the CAPTCHA frame, script, style, or network connection. Compare your policy with the provider’s current CSP instructions. Google documents nonce-based approaches and the required script, frame, and connect origins in its FAQ (Google reCAPTCHA FAQ).
hCaptcha’s CSP guidance names separate provider origins for scripts, frames, styles, and connections and warns against hard-coding particular asset subdomains because they can vary by region or over time (hCaptcha Configuration). Permit the documented origins rather than guessing an image hostname. After changing CSP, test both the initial widget and an actual challenge.
Check proxies, WAFs, and resource filters
Review reverse-proxy logs, web-application-firewall events, DNS filtering, and security headers. A rule that blocks third-party frames, unusual query strings, or automated-looking requests can break the challenge even when the provider script returns HTTP 200. Test from a clean external network and compare the request waterfall before changing production security rules.

Common errors and fixes
“Script error” or api.js blocked
Inspect the request and firewall log. Allow the provider origin required by its documentation, then retest without a proxy or content filter.
CSP violation in the console
Add the provider’s documented script, frame, style, and connect sources, or use the documented nonce approach for Google. Avoid wildcard permissions when a narrower policy is practical.
Blank widget after a single-page-app navigation
Ensure the container exists before explicit rendering, do not initialize the same widget twice, and rerender after the route change if your framework removes the original node.
Works in private browsing only
An extension, cookie rule, or cached site setting is interfering. Allow the provider for the affected site, clear its stored data, and re-enable protections one by one.
Challenge reloads forever
Check clock accuracy, network failures, blocked cookies, and provider responses in the Network panel. Test another network before changing application code.
FAQ
Can I fix a missing CAPTCHA by installing a computer accessory?
No. The documented remedies concern JavaScript, browser settings, cookies, network access, firewalls, and website integration; a physical accessory is not an established fix.

Should I turn off my firewall permanently?
No. Use a short, scoped test or ask the network administrator to allow the provider resources required by the site. Restore protections that do not affect the CAPTCHA.
Why does the CAPTCHA work on another website?
Different sites can use different providers, keys, CSPs, rendering modes, and network paths. A success elsewhere does not prove the failing site’s integration is correct.
