It can be a launch freeze, outdated console software, a PC that misses the current requirements, interfering overlay software, a damaged game installation or a platform issue. Fully quit Warzone, restart your system, install every game and operating-system update, then follow the platform-specific checks below.
Identify when the black screen happens
Note the exact point at which the display goes black. The timing determines which fixes are sensible and prevents you from changing hardware settings unnecessarily.

Activision has not identified one universal black-screen cause. Treat the symptom as a troubleshooting category rather than proof that your console or PC is permanently unsupported.

- Exit Warzone fully. Do not leave it suspended or in Quick Resume. Close the game from the platform’s home screen, wait several seconds, and launch it again.
- Restart the platform. Use a normal restart rather than repeatedly cutting power. A restart clears a temporary process or memory state without deleting your game.
- Install updates. Check for a Warzone update and install the latest PlayStation, Xbox or Windows update. Restart again after installation.
- Disconnect nonessential accessories. Temporarily remove capture devices, unusual USB adapters, third-party controller hardware and other equipment added shortly before the problem began.
- Test once without overlays or recording tools. On PC, disable in-game overlays, input-remapping utilities and recording applications before launching. Re-enable them one at a time only after Warzone works.
If the screen remains black, use the branch for your platform instead of repeating restarts.

PlayStation 5: update, cool and clean up data
Install the current PS5 system software
Activision says keeping PlayStation system software current is the best way to reduce crashes and freezes. On the PS5 home screen open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software. Allow the update to finish, restart the console, and then try Warzone before changing other settings.
Improve ventilation
Place the console where air can circulate around its vents. Do not operate it inside a closed cabinet or against a surface that blocks airflow. If the console is hot or its fan is unusually loud, shut it down, let it cool, and retest in a better-ventilated position.
Remove old files or game data
Delete unneeded old files or game data through the PS5 storage controls, taking care not to remove saved data you still need. If you use cloud or external backups, confirm that important saves are synchronized before deleting anything. Reboot after cleanup and launch Warzone again.

Activision does not guarantee functionality with third-party memory cards, controllers, chips or cables. Reconnect the original or officially supported accessories and test with the simplest setup: console, display and standard controller. If the black screen disappears, add accessories back individually to find the conflict.

Xbox Series X|S: update, clear cache and reset Alternate MAC
Install Xbox and game updates
Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings → System → Updates. Apply every available console update, then check that Warzone itself is current. Restart the console after updating.
Check heat and airflow
Keep the Series X or Series S in an open, ventilated position. Remove dust that blocks the vents and stop playing if the console is excessively hot. After it cools, test Warzone before making network changes.
Clear the Xbox cache
Power the console down completely, disconnect its power for a short period, reconnect it and start it again. This clears temporary cached state without deleting your installed games. If the black screen persists, continue with the Alternate MAC reset.

- Press the Xbox button and open Settings → Network → Network settings → Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate MAC Address, choose Clear, and confirm.
- Allow the Xbox to restart, then launch Warzone.
The reset is useful when a stored network identity is interfering with connection setup. It does not replace checking Xbox service status or installing updates.

PC: verify requirements before changing graphics settings
Activision reports that most PC crashes occur during launch or public multiplayer. A black display can therefore be an incompatibility or startup conflict, not just a monitor fault.
Compare your PC with the current minimum
Activision’s minimum specification, updated March 11, 2026, is for Windows 10 64-bit with the latest update. It requires an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970/1060 or Intel Arc A580 graphics card, 3 GB of video memory, and an SSD with 116 GB available. TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, DirectX 12 compatibility and broadband internet are also required.
Use the recommended 60-FPS configuration as a stability target
For the configuration Activision lists for 60 frames per second in 2026, use Windows 11 64-bit, a Ryzen 5 1600X or Core i7-6700K, 12 GB of RAM, an RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060 or Intel Arc B580, 8 GB of video memory and an SSD with 116 GB available. These are recommended specifications, not a guarantee that every system with them will avoid a black screen.

Update the graphics driver
Install the recommended driver for your GPU from its manufacturer’s normal update channel, then restart Windows. Avoid testing with a driver that Windows has partially installed or with multiple graphics-driver packages left in a failed state.

Close software that can interfere
Before launching, close background applications that use overlays, remap inputs, record gameplay or inject an on-screen display. This includes overlay features in chat, GPU-control and recording programs. If Warzone starts normally, re-enable one application at a time to identify the conflict.
Repair the Call of Duty app for Xbox-on-PC 0x errors
Activision’s Known Issues page, updated October 9, 2026, lists Xbox-on-PC 0x errors. Use the Windows repair command before assuming a hardware failure:
- Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Call of Duty, open its menu and select Advanced options.
- Choose Terminate, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the game. If Repair does not resolve the error, return to the same screen and choose Uninstall, then reinstall Call of Duty through your normal launcher.
Submit a crash report when local checks fail
If the PC meets the requirements, uses a current graphics driver and still black-screens after background tools are closed, submit Activision’s Call of Duty PC Crash Report. Include the timing of the failure, your Windows edition, GPU and driver version, and whether it happens in launch, lobby or public multiplayer; those details help separate a reproducible game issue from a local configuration problem.
PS4 and Xbox One: availability is changing in 2026
Activision’s June 5, 2026 platform notice says service reductions began June 4, 2026. Warzone was removed from the PS4 and Xbox One digital storefronts, and new downloads stopped. Existing owners can continue playing through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06; support ends after that season. The exact end date depends on the season schedule, so an inability to download or launch on a legacy console may reflect platform retirement rather than a repairable black-screen fault.

Progress and purchased content can move to a supported current-generation console or PC when you use the same linked Activision account. Some COD Points restrictions apply by console family. Verify the account link before switching platforms and do not assume that a purchase on one console family will transfer as currency to another.

Check known issues before escalating
Activision’s Known Issues page is a running list of reported or identified problems under investigation or scheduled for fixes. Check it before replacing hardware or reinstalling Windows. A listed issue can produce the same black screen on many systems and requires a game update rather than a local repair.
When the ordered steps do not help, use Activision’s Warzone bug-report form. PC players should use the Call of Duty PC Crash Report. PlayStation players should contact PlayStation Support after completing system updates, ventilation checks and data cleanup. Xbox players should contact Xbox Support after updating, clearing the cache, resetting Alternate MAC and checking ventilation. Keep screenshots or a phone recording of the black screen, the time it occurs and any displayed error code for the support case.
