If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not download or update on a Switch 2, start with storage and compatibility rather than repeatedly retrying the download. The Nintendo eShop Australia listing shows a 79.1 GB requirement for the game, and Nintendo warns that mandatory updates can require additional space. Leave headroom beyond 79.1 GB, update the console, and use a microSD Express card if system storage is insufficient.

For a stalled transfer, close running software, verify the internet connection, then open the user page from HOME and choose User Settings > Update Download Progress. If Nintendo error 2002-1002 appears, work through system updating, corrupted-data checks, deletion and redownload, card reseating or replacement, and a system-memory test before seeking repair. A complete power-down, rather than Sleep Mode, is the first fix for crashes after installation.

What the error usually means

Most Modern Warfare 4 installation failures on Switch 2 fall into one of four groups: not enough free space, a stalled network transfer, damaged data or removable storage, or a game crash after the files are installed. The fastest fix depends on which symptom you see.

Symptom Most useful first action Why it helps
The download will not start or stops early Check free space, then close software and use User Settings > Update Download Progress The 79.1 GB listing does not include unlimited headroom for mandatory updates, and foreground software can interrupt downloads.
The update remains at the same percentage Confirm connectivity, resume from Update Download Progress, and restart the console if it remains stalled A fresh network session can clear a paused transfer.
Error 2002-1002 or corrupted-data warning Update the system, check data, delete and redownload; then test storage separately The error can involve the download, a microSD Express card, or system memory.
The game crashes or freezes after installation Power the Switch 2 down completely, wait, and restart Activision specifically distinguishes a full restart from Sleep Mode.

Do not assume that a download problem proves the game itself is defective. Testing the same download in system memory and on a supported card is useful because it separates storage faults from account, network, or software problems.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

How much storage Modern Warfare 4 needs

The published requirement

Nintendo’s Nintendo eShop Australia listing gives Modern Warfare 4 a size of 79.1 GB. That is the current figure shown for the Australian listing in 2026, not a universal promise that every regional listing or future build will remain identical. Check the listing for your own region as well, because Nintendo says availability, online services, and required update space can change over time. Nintendo eShop Australia listing

Why 79.1 GB is not a safe free-space target

Nintendo warns on the listing that mandatory updates may need additional space. The console therefore needs room for the initial software and for temporary or permanent update data. If the system reports insufficient space while more than 79.1 GB appears available, that is consistent with the update requirement rather than proof that the listing is wrong. Delete unused software, screenshots, or recordings, or move the installation to a compatible microSD Express card before trying again.

Checking space before a retry

  1. Open the Switch 2 HOME Menu and go to System Settings.
  2. Open Data Management and review available system memory and the space available on any installed microSD Express card.
  3. Compare the free capacity with 79.1 GB and keep additional room for the mandatory launch or later updates.
  4. If either location is too close to full, remove software you can redownload later or install a supported microSD Express card before restarting the transfer.

There is no official failure-rate, download-speed, or minimum-headroom number in the published guidance. Treat 79.1 GB as the stated software size and reserve extra capacity rather than relying on an exact-margin calculation.

Which memory cards work with Switch 2?

Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for removable software storage. Nintendo’s support documentation says, “A microSD Express card can be used to save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates, and DLC.” Nintendo does not describe ordinary microSD cards as compatible with Switch 2, so a standard microSD card is not an appropriate substitute for this troubleshooting process. Nintendo support: insufficient space and microSD Express

Choosing between system memory and a card

Storage location Compatibility requirement What to check Official performance comparison
Switch 2 system memory No removable-card requirement At least 79.1 GB plus room for mandatory updates Not stated
microSD Express card Must be microSD Express; Nintendo does not document ordinary microSD as compatible Enough free capacity for the installation, updates, and other software; card must be seated correctly Not stated for specific card models or against system memory

Nintendo documents compatibility and storage use, but the available guidance does not publish a speed ranking between internal storage and particular microSD Express models. Do not choose a card on the assumption that an unverified model will download faster or prevent crashes. The practical diagnostic question is whether the same operation succeeds in system memory and on the card.

Preorders and the required launch update

Activision says a Nintendo eShop preorder downloads before launch when the console is online, but a small launch update is still required. A preloaded game can therefore appear complete while remaining unable to start until the release update arrives. Keep the Switch 2 connected to the internet, leave room beyond the 79.1 GB listing, and allow the launch update to finish before judging the installation a failure. Activision installation guidance

If the preorder has not begun downloading, first check the console’s free space and system software. If it downloaded but will not launch at release, look for the small launch update rather than deleting the entire game immediately.

Step 1: Update the Switch 2 system

Out-of-date system software can interfere with installation and is the first update step listed by Activision.

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose System Update.
  4. Allow the update to complete and restart the console if prompted.
  5. Reconnect to the internet and retry Modern Warfare 4 only after the system update has finished.

If the console cannot update, resolve that system-level network problem first. Repeatedly retrying the game download while the operating system is waiting for an update can leave you diagnosing the wrong layer.

Step 2: Unstick a download or update

Use the documented resume command

  1. Confirm that the Switch 2 is connected to the internet. If other devices cannot reach the same network, fix the connection before changing game data.
  2. Close any software currently running. A game or application using the connection can pause or delay the transfer.
  3. From the HOME Menu, open the user page.
  4. Choose User Settings.
  5. Select Update Download Progress.
  6. Wait for the download to resume and observe whether the percentage advances.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Restart when progress is still frozen

If Update Download Progress does not move, restart the console. Let it reconnect to the network before launching any software that could pause downloads. A restart is different from merely putting the console into Sleep Mode; use the normal power menu for a clean restart when the interface still responds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When not to delete the download yet

A stalled percentage by itself does not establish that the files are corrupted. Check space, system software, connectivity, and the documented resume command first. Deleting and redownloading consumes time and bandwidth, so reserve that step for a corruption error, a failed resume after restart, or Nintendo’s 2002-1002 procedure.

Step 3: Resolve error 2002-1002 and corrupted data

Nintendo’s error 2002-1002 guidance calls for a sequence that tests both software data and storage hardware. Follow it in order, recording whether the failure occurs in system memory, on the card, or in both locations. Nintendo error 2002-1002 support

1. Update the system

Use System Settings > System > System Update, then retry after the console has restarted. This removes an outdated-system variable before you alter game files.

2. Check for corrupted data

Run the Switch 2’s built-in corrupted-data check for Modern Warfare 4. If the check identifies damaged data, continue to deletion and redownload instead of repeatedly opening the damaged installation.

3. Delete the problematic software and redownload it

Remove the affected software through the console’s data-management controls, then download it again from your Nintendo eShop ownership or preorder. Ensure at least 79.1 GB plus update headroom is available before starting. Deleting software does not make an undersized storage location larger; free the required capacity first.

4. Reseat or format the microSD Express card

If the software is on a microSD Express card, power the console off completely before removing or reinserting the card. Do not pull it while the system is operating. If reseating does not help, Nintendo’s procedure allows formatting the supported card; formatting erases its stored data, so confirm that screenshots and software can be redownloaded or backed up as appropriate before proceeding.

5. Try another supported card

Use another microSD Express card if one is available. The replacement must be the supported Express type; switching to an ordinary microSD card does not test the documented configuration.

6. Test system memory without the card

Remove the microSD Express card while the console is powered off, then attempt the download directly to system memory. If system memory succeeds while the card fails, the card, its contents, or its seating is implicated. If both locations fail, the cause may be the software download, console system, account, or network rather than one card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Escalate persistent failures

Nintendo says persistent failure with multiple supported cards or with system memory may require repair. At that point, keep the error code, note which storage tests succeeded or failed, and provide those details to support instead of repeatedly formatting every card.

Step 4: Fix crashes and freezes after installation

Perform a complete power-down

Activision’s Switch 2 instruction is: “If your game is crashing, power down your system completely before restarting it and launching the game again.” Sleep Mode is not the same as a full restart because it leaves the console in a suspended state. Activision crash and freeze guidance

  1. Exit Modern Warfare 4 if the console still responds.
  2. Use the power menu to shut the Switch 2 down completely.
  3. Wait for the console to finish powering off, then turn it on and launch the game again.
  4. If the system is frozen, hold the POWER button to force a shutdown, wait at least 30 seconds, and turn it on again.

Share crash information

To help investigations, open Settings > System > Share Error Information and enable the reporting option. Restart the console afterward so the report can be sent. Sharing a report does not replace the full power-down procedure and does not repair corrupted storage, but it gives the publisher diagnostic information about a repeatable crash.

Separate a game crash from a storage failure

If the game installs but crashes only when reading content from a microSD Express card, repeat the test in system memory. If it crashes in both locations after a complete restart, keep the system updated and use the publisher’s crash-report setting. If the console itself freezes during downloads or other software, treat that as a broader system or storage problem and follow the 2002-1002 checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using storage tests to identify the fault

Changing one variable at a time makes the result useful. Start with the same network and account, then compare locations:

Test Result What it suggests
Download to system memory with no card inserted Succeeds The card, card contents, or card seating is the likely trigger.
Download to system memory with no card inserted Fails with 2002-1002 Continue Nintendo’s system-update, corrupted-data, redownload, and support steps; the card is not the only possible cause.
Download to one microSD Express card Fails, but another supported card succeeds The first card or its data is implicated.
Download to multiple supported cards and system memory All fail Nintendo indicates that repair may be required after these tests.

This comparison identifies a failing path; it does not prove that one storage type is faster. No official performance comparison between system memory and specific microSD Express models is provided.

Preventing another failed update

  • Keep more free space than the published 79.1 GB software size so a mandatory update has room to install.
  • Use only a microSD Express card for removable software data on Switch 2.
  • Install system updates before beginning a large game download.
  • Keep the console online during preorder preloads and the launch update.
  • Close running software when a download is active.
  • Use Update Download Progress instead of repeatedly launching and closing the game.
  • Power off completely before removing or reinserting a microSD Express card.
  • If a crash repeats, perform a complete restart and enable Share Error Information.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support

Escalate after the documented storage tests rather than continuing an endless cycle of retries. Contact Nintendo when Modern Warfare 4 fails after a system update, corrupted-data check, deletion and redownload, another supported microSD Express card, and a direct system-memory test. Include error 2002-1002 if shown and explain whether the failure occurred on the card, in system memory, or in both. Contact Activision for a repeatable post-install crash after a complete power-down, and mention whether the crash occurs only with this title or with other software.

Remember that the 79.1 GB figure comes from the Nintendo eShop Australia listing in 2026. Regional listings, online-service availability, and required update space can change, so a later download may legitimately require a different amount of free storage.
