How to Fix Call of Duty Download, Update, and Storage Problems on Nintendo Switch 2

If Call of Duty is stuck downloading, an update will not advance, or Nintendo Switch 2 reports insufficient storage, start with Nintendo’s download controls: close the game, refresh Update Download Progress, restart the console if necessary, and test the internet connection. Then verify the current Call of Duty storage requirement in the Nintendo eShop or on the game package. If free space is the problem, remove unused software or content, or add a compatible microSD Express card. Only after those checks should you move to Activision Support’s Nintendo Switch 2 installation, update, DLC, or load/install troubleshooting.

Quick diagnosis: match the symptom to the right fix

Call of Duty download and update failures on Switch 2 usually fall into three separate categories: a download paused because the game is running, a connection that is too slow or unavailable, or insufficient storage for the game or its current data. The correct first step depends on which symptom you see.

What you see Most useful first action What to check next
Download remains at zero or appears paused Close Call of Duty from HOME, then select User Settings > Update Download Progress. Restart the Switch 2 and confirm that it reconnects to the internet.
Progress moves, but very slowly Run the console’s internet connection test. Resolve the network problem before retrying the download.
Update will not progress Use the same close, refresh, restart, and connection-test sequence. Check available storage and then use Activision’s Nintendo Switch 2 support categories if the console steps fail.
“Not enough space” or a similar storage message Look up the current Call of Duty requirement in the eShop or on the physical package. Delete unused software or content, or install a compatible microSD Express card.
The game will not install or load after the console checks Confirm internet access, adequate space, and that the download or update is not paused. Open Activision Support and choose the closest Nintendo Switch 2 installation or load/install category.

Storage and patch requirements can change with the title and its updates. Do not rely on a fixed Call of Duty file-size figure from an old guide.

Fix a Call of Duty download that is stuck or will not start

1. Confirm the Switch 2 is online

Before changing storage or reinstalling anything, make sure the console has an active internet connection. A download cannot begin or continue without one. If the console appears connected but progress is not moving, continue with the refresh steps below and then run the built-in connection test.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

2. Close Call of Duty completely

Nintendo explains that downloads can pause while some games or software are being played. Save your progress, return to the HOME menu, highlight Call of Duty, and press X to close it. Leaving the game suspended can prevent the download from advancing even though the console itself is connected.

3. Refresh the download from User Settings

  1. From HOME, open your user page.
  2. Select User Settings.
  3. Choose Update Download Progress.
  4. Allow the console to check and resume the pending Call of Duty data.

This is Nintendo’s specific control for prompting a stalled download to continue. Keep Call of Duty closed while the progress refreshes.

4. Restart if progress is still frozen

If the download remains stuck, restart the Switch 2. Wait for the console to reconnect to the internet, then check the download again. Do not launch software that could pause the transfer while you are checking whether it has resumed.

  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

5. Test the connection when the download is merely slow

A download that is moving slowly is different from one that is paused. Use the Switch 2 internet connection test to identify a network problem. Address the connection issue indicated by the test, then return to the download. The support steps do not establish a universal speed threshold or a single network setting that fixes every slow transfer, so avoid treating a particular error code or speed as a guaranteed diagnosis.

Fix a Call of Duty update that will not progress

An update is still Switch 2 software data, so begin with Nintendo’s download sequence rather than assuming the game needs to be reinstalled.

  1. Save and close Call of Duty from HOME by highlighting it and pressing X.
  2. Open your user page and go to User Settings > Update Download Progress.
  3. If the update does not advance, restart the Switch 2 and wait for the internet connection to return.
  4. Run the console’s internet connection test if the update is progressing unusually slowly.
  5. Check available storage and the current game requirement if the console reports a space problem.

Do not assume that a particular error code has one universal solution. A code-specific fix should come from an Activision article that addresses that code and the relevant Switch 2 title. If Nintendo’s controls complete without an error but the update still fails, use the Activision escalation path described below.

Check how much storage Call of Duty currently needs

Nintendo states that “Storage requirements vary by game.” That means there is no permanent, one-size-fits-all Call of Duty number that can safely be copied from an older article. The requirement can depend on the exact title, edition, downloadable content, and update state.

Where to find the authoritative requirement

  • Digital purchase: open the current Call of Duty listing in the Nintendo eShop and read its storage information before downloading or retrying the install.
  • Physical purchase: check the storage requirement printed on the game package.
  • Existing installation: compare the console’s available space with the requirement shown for the current listing or package, rather than with a third-party estimate.

Check the listing again if the game has changed, because a new update or downloadable content can alter the space you need. Keep the wording “current requirement” in mind: an old screenshot or a forum post may describe a different build.

Free space without touching save data

If the console says there is not enough room, delete software or other content you no longer use. Nintendo’s storage guidance supports freeing unused content; it does not establish that deleting save data is necessary. Do not remove saves as a routine download fix.

  4. Return to the Call of Duty download and refresh Update Download Progress if it does not resume automatically.

The exact amount of headroom to leave is not specified by the cited Nintendo guidance. Keep enough room for the current requirement and be prepared for future updates rather than buying or deleting content based on an unverified fixed number.

Use a microSD Express card when internal space is not enough

Nintendo’s supported expansion path for Switch 2 is a microSD Express card. Nintendo says: “A microSD Express card can be used to save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates, and DLC.” In other words, a compatible card can provide space for Call of Duty itself, its updates, and downloadable content; it is not limited to screenshots.

Choose the card against the current requirement

First check the current Call of Duty eShop listing or package. Then choose a Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card with enough capacity for that installation plus the updates and DLC you expect to keep. Nintendo identifies cards as available in different sizes, but the support information does not name a single capacity that fits every Call of Duty title or future update.

What to compare before buying

Comparison point Why it matters
Switch 2 microSD Express compatibility A card must use the storage format supported by the console; do not assume any older microSD card is an equivalent substitute.
Capacity Match the card to the current Call of Duty requirement and leave room for updates and DLC.
Licensed or reputable sourcing Reliable sourcing reduces the risk of counterfeit capacity or an unreliable card.
Warranty A clear warranty gives you a remedy if the card fails.
Current price Prices change; compare the capacity and warranty at the time you buy rather than relying on an old price.

Do not compare cards by an asserted Call of Duty file size unless you have checked the live eShop listing for the title and edition you are installing. A card’s advertised capacity also does not prove how much free space the game will need after updates.

When Call of Duty will not install or load

Installation and loading failures can be consequences of the same three conditions: no usable internet connection, a download paused by running software, or insufficient storage. Work through the console checks in this order:

  1. Confirm the Switch 2 has internet access.
  2. Close Call of Duty from HOME with X.
  3. Use User Settings > Update Download Progress.
  4. Restart the console if the transfer remains stalled.
  5. Check the current storage requirement in the eShop or on the package.
  6. Free space by deleting unused software or content, or add a compatible microSD Express card.

If the console reports a title-specific installation or loading error after these checks, avoid inventing a fix from a different Call of Duty edition. The support categories and requirements can vary by title and patch.

Escalate to Activision Support after the console checks

Use Activision Support when the Switch 2 is online, Call of Duty is closed, download progress has been refreshed, the console has been restarted, and adequate storage is available, but the game still will not install, update, load, or handle its DLC.

  1. Open Activision Support.
  2. Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 if that is the applicable current title shown in the portal, or choose the current Call of Duty title you own.
  3. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 as the platform.
  4. Select the closest category: installation/setup, update, DLC, or My game won’t load or install.
  5. Sign in if the portal requests account access for recommended support options.

Describe what happened in concrete terms: whether the download never started, paused while the game was open, moved slowly, stopped at a particular point, reported insufficient storage, or failed after a restart. Include the title and edition shown in your eShop or package information. This helps keep the request tied to the correct Switch 2 release instead of a similarly named version on another platform.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Playing while expecting the download to continue: Nintendo notes that downloads can pause for some software that is currently being played. Close Call of Duty first.
  • Using a permanent file-size claim: the requirement varies by game and can change with updates, DLC, and editions. Check the current listing.
  • Buying an unspecified memory card: Switch 2’s supported expansion path is microSD Express. Confirm compatibility before purchasing.
  • Deleting save data as a first resort: the cited storage guidance supports removing unused software or other content, not treating save deletion as a required fix.
  • Applying a random error-code fix: do not generalize a solution from another title or platform unless Activision documents it for your situation.
  • Reopening the game after every retry: launching software can pause the transfer again, making it harder to tell whether the refresh worked.

A repeatable checklist for future updates

  • Check the current Call of Duty requirement in the Nintendo eShop or on the physical package.
  • Keep sufficient free storage for the title, its updates, and any DLC you intend to retain.
  • Use a Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card if internal capacity is insufficient.
  • When a transfer stalls, close the game before using Update Download Progress.
  • Restart the console if refreshing does not resume the transfer.
  • Run the internet connection test when progress is slow rather than fully paused.
  • Escalate to Activision with Nintendo Switch 2 selected only after the console, connection, and storage checks are complete.

What the symptoms tell you

A download that resumes after closing Call of Duty points to software being active while the transfer was attempted. A download that remains slow but moves warrants the internet connection test. A clear storage warning requires checking the current requirement and freeing space or adding microSD Express capacity. If all three areas are satisfactory and the title still cannot install, update, or load, the remaining troubleshooting belongs with the game’s publisher support for the exact title and platform.
