Start by finding out whether the fault is limited to one title, one app, one device, or the whole home network. Then test the connection on the streaming device itself, restart the device and network in the correct order, and separate internet symptoms from HDMI or TV problems. Do not buy a faster plan, new router, or HDMI cable until those checks show where the fault is.
- Play a different title in the same app, then try another app.
- Run the streaming device’s built-in network test, if available.
- Restart the streamer and network hardware using the instructions for that model.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or a closer router position.
- For a blurry, flickering, blank, or glitchy picture, test the HDMI path separately.
First identify what is actually failing
Buffering means the player is not receiving data quickly or consistently enough to keep its playback buffer full. A soft picture, sparkles, flicker, black screen, or audio-video drop can instead be caused by the cable, HDMI port, receiver, display settings, or the streaming device itself. The fix depends on the symptom’s scope.

| What you observe | Most useful first check | Likely support owner if it persists |
|---|---|---|
| One title fails while other titles play | Try another title and use the service’s report-problem path | Streaming service |
| One app fails while other apps play | Update, sign out and back in, or reinstall that app | Streaming service or device maker |
| One streamer fails across several apps | Run a test on that device and restart it | Device maker or home network |
| Several devices are slow or offline | Test the router connection and check for an outage | Internet service provider |
| Picture is distorted, flickers, or goes blank without loading delays | Test another HDMI port or cable and bypass intermediaries | TV, cable, receiver, or streamer maker |
This scope check prevents you from treating a single damaged title or app outage as a broadband failure. It also explains why a speed test on a phone may look excellent while the TV still buffers: the phone may be closer to the router, using a different band, or connected by a different path.

Netflix on a TV-connected device
In the Netflix TV app, open the network-check option usually labelled Check your Network. It checks whether the device can reach Netflix and measures the connection speed from that device. The result is more relevant than testing a phone in another room.
Fire TV
On compatible Fire TV models, open the network settings and choose Network Diagnostics. The menu may include Run Speed Test. A failed test, a very low result, or repeated disconnections points you toward the Wi-Fi or router path rather than the video title.
Roku and other players
Roku’s network-check feature indicates whether the connection should support smooth streaming and can reveal that other devices are using bandwidth. Menu names differ by model and software version, so use the current instructions for your exact player.

Interpret speed figures correctly
Netflix’s current Help Center recommendation is a stable connection of 3 Mbps for HD 720p, 5 Mbps for Full HD 1080p, and 15 Mbps for UHD 4K. These are Netflix recommendations, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They are not universal guarantees for every service, household, or number of simultaneous streams.
| Netflix quality label | Recommended stable speed | What the number does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| HD 720p | 3 Mbps | That another service will hold the same quality or that Wi-Fi is stable |
| Full HD 1080p | 5 Mbps | That several concurrent streams will have enough capacity |
| UHD 4K | 15 Mbps | That the device, HDMI path, or TV supports 4K correctly |
If the device-level result is poor, check whether other devices are affected and continue with the restart and isolation steps below. If it remains poor, the ISP may need to investigate an outage, modem or router fault, line problem, or incorrect network settings.
Restart the equipment in a controlled order
Restarting clears temporary software and network states, but unplugging everything at random can make diagnosis harder. Follow the sequence that matches your hardware.

Netflix TV-device restart
- Turn the streaming device fully off rather than merely putting it to sleep.
- Leave it off for 15 seconds, then turn it on and retry the same title.
- For a home-network restart, turn off the streamer, unplug the modem and router, and wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router, allowing about one minute for them to come online; some equipment takes longer.
- Turn the streamer back on and run the device-level network test again.
Netflix also publishes a buffering procedure that has you unplug the streaming device, press its power button, and wait one minute, or leave it unplugged for three minutes. Use the interval specified for your model rather than combining every published wait into one ritual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFire TV restart
- Unplug the Fire TV device for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Restart the modem and router by unplugging them for one minute.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to come online.
- Reconnect the router, wait for its network lights and internet connection to return, then retry playback.
Vendor timings differ because hardware and software differ. If your model’s current support page gives another sequence, use that sequence.
Improve or isolate Wi-Fi without buying anything
Move the devices for a controlled test
Temporarily move the streamer or router closer together and replay the same content. If buffering stops, distance, walls, interference, or poor coverage is more likely than an app defect. Restore normal placement afterward and test whether a smaller move is enough.
Try Ethernet where a port exists
Connect the streamer or TV directly to the router with Ethernet if both have a port. A wired result is a diagnostic comparison: if Ethernet plays smoothly while Wi-Fi does not, focus on router placement, interference, wireless band selection, or coverage. Ethernet cannot repair an ISP outage or a broken app.
Account for competing traffic
Large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls, and other streams can consume the available capacity. Pause them during the test so you measure the stream under a known load. A router’s overall internet result can be acceptable while one room has a weak wireless signal.

Separate buffering from a picture or HDMI problem
Buffering normally appears as loading, pauses, or reduced quality before playback resumes. Distortion, coloured blocks, skipping, stuttering, flicker, a blank screen, or a message that the input is unsupported can originate between the streamer and TV.
Basic cable and port checks
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect both HDMI ends.
- Select the TV input that is actually connected to the streamer.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable.
- Connect the streamer directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or splitter.
- If possible, test the streamer on another TV.
If the picture works on a second TV, the original TV’s input or display path is suspect. If direct connection works but the receiver or switch does not, troubleshoot that intermediary instead of changing your internet plan.
Apple TV 4K or HD display settings
Apple’s display guidance also calls for checking the selected input, trying another HDMI port and cable, and connecting directly to the TV to isolate a switch or AV receiver. Check the selected resolution and the Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate options. Those matching settings can produce a blank or flickering screen while the display changes format.
Cable requirements are model-specific: Apple identifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0. Do not treat those cable requirements as a general solution for buffering when there are no HDMI symptoms.
Check software and app-specific causes
One title only
Play several other titles in the same service. If only one movie, episode, or live event fails, use the service’s report-problem route. Netflix provides a report option through Viewing Activity for a particular title. A title-specific fault cannot be repaired by replacing the router.
One app only
Confirm that the device software and the affected app are current. Force-close the app, reopen it, and sign in again if necessary. If the platform permits it, clear the app’s data or reinstall it; note that this removes downloaded content and saved sign-in information. Test another app before concluding that the network is responsible.

One device across several apps
Install any pending system update, restart the device, and repeat the network test. If another streamer on the same network plays normally, the failing device’s wireless hardware, software, or HDMI path deserves attention from its manufacturer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why “fast internet” can still buffer
- The test was taken elsewhere. A phone near the router does not measure the TV’s signal through walls.
- The plan speed is only an advertised maximum. Congestion, line faults, or an outage can reduce the usable rate.
- Stability matters. Short drops and high latency can empty a playback buffer even when an occasional speed test reports a high peak.
- Several devices share capacity. Concurrent streams and downloads reduce what remains for the player.
- The service or title may be at fault. If alternatives play, the broadband connection is not the only explanation.
- The picture path may be failing. HDMI errors can look like poor streaming quality but do not originate on the internet.
Use this decision path after the first checks
| Result after testing | Next action |
|---|---|
| Only one title fails | Report that title to the streaming service and use another title as a comparison. |
| Only one app fails | Update, restart, sign in again, or reinstall the app; check the service’s status information. |
| Device test fails or is consistently low | Restart modem, router, and streamer; compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or a closer position. |
| Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails | Investigate coverage, interference, router placement, or wireless settings. |
| Several home devices are offline | Check the router and contact the ISP about an outage or line issue. |
| Direct HDMI works but receiver or switch does not | Troubleshoot or replace the intermediary and verify its format support. |
| Another TV works but the original does not | Inspect the original TV’s HDMI port, input selection, and display settings. |
| All tests pass but one streamer still fails across apps | Contact the device maker after installing updates and recording the exact error and model. |
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several things at once. If you move the router, replace the cable, reinstall the app, and change resolution simultaneously, you will not know which change mattered. Test one variable, replay the same content, and record the result.
- Using only a phone speed test. Run the check from the TV-connected device whenever the app or hardware offers one.
- Calling every picture problem buffering. A blank or flickering output with no loading indicator deserves an HDMI and display test first.
- Assuming 4K is available because the plan is fast enough. The 15 Mbps Netflix recommendation does not prove that the streamer, cable, receiver, selected resolution, and TV all support UHD correctly.
- Buying mesh hardware before confirming coverage. A mesh system cannot correct a title outage, an ISP fault, or a bad HDMI intermediary.
- Repeating incompatible restart timings. Netflix and Fire TV publish different intervals. Use the procedure for the exact device instead of stacking every waiting period together.
When to buy a cable or network upgrade
Ethernet cable
An Ethernet cable is worthwhile only when the streamer or TV has an Ethernet port and the router can be connected. Its main value here is a stable wired test and, where Wi-Fi coverage is the bottleneck, a lasting wired connection. It will not fix an outage, an app problem, or a title that fails for everyone.
HDMI cable
Replace an HDMI cable only after reseating it, trying another port, bypassing intermediaries, or testing another cable points to the display path. A new HDMI cable is not a general buffering remedy.
Router or mesh equipment
Consider new coverage hardware only after a closer-position test and Ethernet comparison demonstrate a wireless coverage problem. Record which rooms and devices fail so the replacement addresses a measured gap rather than an assumed one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does buffering happen even with fast internet?
A plan’s advertised maximum does not show the connection reaching the TV. The streamer may have weak Wi-Fi, competing household traffic, brief dropouts, or an app or title problem. Test from the streaming device, compare another title and app, and try Ethernet or a closer router position.
What internet speed does Netflix recommend?
Netflix currently recommends a stable 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 15 Mbps for UHD 4K. These are Netflix recommendations, not universal guarantees for every service, household, or number of simultaneous streams.
How can I tell whether Wi-Fi is the problem?
Run the device’s network test, move the streamer temporarily closer to the router, or connect Ethernet if both devices have ports. Smooth playback on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi points to coverage, interference, or router placement.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is the picture blurry or flickering when playback is not buffering?
The HDMI cable, TV port, receiver, switch, resolution, or display-format settings may be responsible. Reseat both HDMI ends, try another port and cable, connect directly to the TV, and test another TV if possible.
What should I do if only one movie or episode fails?
Play other titles in the same service. If only that title has the problem, use the service’s report-problem option; Netflix provides one through Viewing Activity. Replacing the router is unlikely to fix a title-specific fault.
When should I contact my internet provider?
Contact the ISP when several devices are offline, a device-level connection test remains consistently poor after a restart, or the problem persists across apps and streamers. Ask about an outage, modem or router fault, line issue, or network settings.
Do I need a new HDMI cable for buffering?
No. An HDMI cable is relevant when you see distortion, flicker, a blank screen, or unsupported-input messages. Replace it only after reseating connections, trying another port, bypassing intermediaries, or testing another cable points to the display path.
Will a mesh router definitely stop buffering?
No. Mesh equipment is a conditional option for a larger home after placement tests or an Ethernet comparison confirm weak wireless coverage. It cannot fix an ISP outage, app or title failure, or HDMI problem.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the scope first, test the connection at the streamer, and restart hardware using the instructions for that model. Then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or a closer router position and isolate the HDMI path whenever the symptom is blurry, flickering, blank, or glitchy rather than simply slow. Buy equipment only after a test identifies the failing layer, and send the streaming service, device maker, or ISP the evidence that matches that layer.
