If a live Game Awards stream keeps pausing or the sound trails the picture, first determine whether the fault follows the event, your internet connection, or your playback device. Try another live stream, switch networks, and test a different browser or device. Then stabilize the connection, lower the player quality, disable low-latency playback if necessary, and update or reset the browser or app. These steps resolve most viewer-side problems; if only the awards feed remains broken everywhere, the broadcaster or platform has to correct it.
Use this troubleshooting order first
Do the checks in order. Each one removes a different possible cause, so you do not waste time changing television settings when the event feed itself is unstable.

- Test another live stream on the same service. If another channel plays normally, the Game Awards feed, its encoder, or its delivery path may be responsible.
- Test the event on another network. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or use another Wi-Fi connection. A change in behavior points to your home network or internet provider.
- Try another browser, app, or device. This separates browser extensions, cached data, graphics decoding, and device-specific faults from connection problems.
- Measure the connection against the stream quality. Use the figures in the table below as a practical target, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.
- Set the player to Auto, then lower the resolution if needed. A smaller video stream requires less sustained bandwidth and usually recovers faster after a network spike.
- Reset latency and playback software. Restart the player, disable low-latency mode when available, update the browser or app, and retest before changing more settings.
Find out whether the stream or your setup is at fault
When only the Game Awards stream fails
Open a second live channel on the same platform without closing the awards stream. If the second channel is smooth while the event remains choppy, your connection is less likely to be the primary cause. Twitch notes that a broadcaster can create playback problems through an unsuitable bitrate, encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, or unstable upload. A large audience can also expose an issue in the event’s distribution path that ordinary channels do not trigger.

When several streams fail
If multiple live channels buffer on the same device, check your network first. If every device on the same Wi-Fi has the problem, suspect the router, wireless interference, congestion, or your internet connection. If only one browser or device fails while other equipment is fine, focus on its software, extensions, cache, graphics driver, or hardware decoding.
| Test | Result | Most likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Another channel on the same service | Other channel is smooth | Event feed, broadcaster, or platform delivery |
| Another channel on the same service | All channels buffer | Network, browser, device, or service-wide incident |
| Same event on mobile data | Mobile data works | Home Wi-Fi, router, ISP path, or local congestion |
| Same event in another browser or app | Only one playback method fails | Extension, cache, browser version, or hardware decoding |
| Same event on every network and device | Delay or buffering persists | Event feed or platform-side fault |
Check whether your connection can sustain the chosen quality
Live video needs a steady stream of data, not merely a high peak speed. Other people watching video, cloud backups, game downloads, and Wi-Fi retransmissions can consume the headroom that a live player needs. Compare your actual download result with the platform’s recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you selected.
| Playback quality | Twitch recommended download speed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1440p at 60 frames per second | 9–18 Mbps or higher | Requires the most sustained bandwidth and the greatest margin for variation |
| 1080p at 60 frames per second | 7–12 Mbps | Typical high-definition choice for a large screen |
| 720p at 60 frames per second | 3–6 Mbps | Useful fallback when 1080p is unstable |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps | Lower detail but substantially less data |
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps | Emergency option for a constrained connection |
These are Twitch’s published 2026 recommendations. They describe download capacity for the listed quality, not a promise that a particular event will play without interruption. A connection that briefly reaches 10 Mbps but repeatedly falls below it can still stall a 1080p60 stream.

For HD playback, MLB recommends at least 3000 Kbps of dedicated bandwidth. That is a service-specific minimum and should not be treated as a universal requirement for every Game Awards platform, but it illustrates why shared household bandwidth can matter.

Stabilize Wi-Fi and test the internet path
Switch networks for a decisive test
Temporarily use mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network. If the stream immediately improves, return to the original network and investigate it rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Keep in mind that mobile data may have a cap, congestion, or a different quality limit, so use it as a diagnostic test unless you know the allowance is sufficient.
Reduce wireless interference
- Move the streaming device closer to the router and keep it in an open position rather than behind a television or inside a cabinet.
- Pause downloads, cloud synchronization, game updates, and other video streams while watching the event.
- Ask other users to stop bandwidth-heavy activity for a few minutes during the test.
- Restart the router and modem if they have been running for a long time or other devices are also losing connectivity.
Try wired Ethernet
Connect a computer, smart-TV adapter, or console directly to the router with Ethernet when practical. A wired test removes radio interference and much of the variability caused by distance and walls. If Ethernet is smooth while Wi-Fi is not, keep the wired connection for the event or improve router placement and wireless coverage.
Temporarily remove traffic-changing services
Disable a VPN or proxy for one playback attempt. These services can add a distant route, encryption overhead, or a congested server. If disabling it fixes the stream, re-enable it later and try a nearer server rather than assuming the player is defective. Do not leave a security service off permanently if you require it for privacy or organizational policy.

Start with Auto quality
On Twitch, the Auto setting automatically adjusts video quality to current network conditions and is intended to reduce buffering. Select it from the player’s quality menu, let the stream run for a minute, and observe whether the player settles at a lower resolution. If Auto oscillates or still stalls, choose a lower manual resolution such as 720p60 or 480p.

On other players, open the gear or quality menu and select a lower resolution. Reducing resolution is usually more effective than repeatedly pausing and resuming because it lowers the amount of data required every second.
Understand low-latency trade-offs
Low latency makes the picture closer to the live moment, which is useful when you want to avoid spoilers. It also leaves less data buffered in the player. YouTube states: “The lower the broadcast delay, the less buffer the video player will have.” A small network fluctuation can therefore interrupt a low-latency stream that would continue smoothly in the default mode.
| Choice | Advantage | Cost | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto quality | Adapts to changing bandwidth | Picture sharpness can change | Your connection varies during the event |
| Manual lower quality | Predictable, lighter data demand | Less detail | Auto still buffers or your measured speed is limited |
| Low latency | Fewer seconds behind the live program | Smaller buffer and more interruption risk | Immediate interaction matters more than stability |
| Default latency | Larger cushion against short network dips | More delay behind the live program | You want uninterrupted viewing |
Repair browser and app playback
Use a clean playback session
- Close unnecessary tabs, especially pages playing video or refreshing live data.
- Open a private or incognito window and sign in only if the service requires it.
- Disable extensions temporarily, with ad blockers and script-filtering extensions first. Reload the event after each change so you know which setting mattered.
- Clear the browser’s cached files and cookies for the streaming site, then restart the browser.
- Update the browser and operating system and test again.
A private window is a quick diagnostic, not necessarily a permanent solution. If it works, re-enable extensions one at a time and keep the one that causes the failure disabled or configured for the streaming site.

Video decoding can fail even when the network is healthy. Twitch’s decode-error guidance recommends toggling hardware acceleration off and updating GPU drivers. In a desktop browser, hardware acceleration is normally under the browser’s system or performance settings. Turn it off, fully restart the browser, and retest; if performance becomes worse, restore the original setting and instead update the graphics driver.

Determine whether the offset is constant
Watch a speaker’s mouth and listen for consonants such as “p” or “b.” If the sound is always the same fraction of a second late, the issue is usually a player, television, soundbar, Bluetooth, or broadcaster synchronization offset. If the picture and sound begin together but drift farther apart after pauses or quality changes, buffering and clock correction are more likely.
Reset the player before changing equipment
- Pause the stream for a few seconds and resume it.
- Reload the page or force-close and reopen the app.
- Switch to another live channel, then return to the Game Awards feed.
- Change from low-latency to default latency if the platform exposes that control.
- Set quality to Auto or a lower resolution and watch for renewed drift.
These actions rebuild the playback buffer and can discard a corrupted segment. They cannot repair an event feed that was produced out of sync at the source.
Check television and audio-device processing
If the browser or phone is synchronized but a television is not, compare the TV’s built-in speakers with a soundbar, receiver, or Bluetooth headphones. Wireless audio and surround-processing modes can add a fixed delay. Use the television or receiver’s audio-sync control to move sound earlier or later in small increments. Turn off extra audio processing temporarily while diagnosing; restore it afterward if it is not the cause.

When Bluetooth is the only path with delay, test wired headphones or the TV speakers. A wired result points to the wireless audio chain rather than the stream.
Platform-specific checks
Twitch
- Open the player settings and choose Auto quality first, then a lower manual quality if the stream still buffers.
- Open Video Stats to inspect playback information while the problem occurs.
- Use the viewer latency controls and try disabling low latency when interruptions or audio drift coincide with an undersized buffer.
- For decode errors, update the browser and GPU driver and test with hardware acceleration toggled off.
YouTube
- Use the player quality menu to select Auto or a lower resolution.
- Prefer the platform’s default latency when stability is more important than being only a few seconds behind.
- Remember that changing latency cannot correct a source recording whose audio and video were misaligned before distribution.
An official Game Awards website or other player
Identify the service shown in the event link before applying platform instructions. Labels for quality, latency, statistics, and app resets differ between services. If there is no latency control, lower quality, change networks, and test another supported browser or device. Do not assume that a setting documented for Twitch or YouTube exists in an unrelated player.
What to do on a television, console, or phone
| Device | High-value checks | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Smart TV | Update the app and TV, restart completely, test built-in speakers, and try Ethernet | Older hardware may decode high-frame-rate video poorly |
| Game console | Pause downloads, use Ethernet, update the streaming app and system, and compare with a phone | Background game or system downloads can consume bandwidth |
| Computer | Private-window test, extension shutdown, cache clear, GPU-driver update, and hardware-acceleration toggle | Browser configuration can mask a network issue |
| Phone or tablet | Switch Wi-Fi/mobile data, disable battery-saving restrictions for the app, update it, and test headphones versus speakers | Mobile congestion and data limits can change during the event |
Recognize a broadcaster-side problem
Treat the problem as upstream when the same event is out of sync or repeatedly stalls on different networks, browsers, and devices while other live channels work. The most useful report includes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- the exact event time, including your time zone;
- the platform and event URL as displayed to you;
- your country or general region;
- device model, operating system, browser or app version, and whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet;
- the selected resolution and latency mode;
- whether the sound was constantly offset or drifted over time;
- which comparison streams and networks worked normally.
That information helps the platform distinguish an encoder or source-feed fault from a local playback problem. If the issue affects only one segment, note its start time so the production team can inspect the corresponding source.
Prevent interruptions before the next live event
- Update the browser, streaming app, operating system, and graphics driver before the broadcast begins.
- Restart the router and streaming device if they have been running continuously for weeks.
- Stop scheduled backups, downloads, and game updates during the event.
- Prefer Ethernet for a fixed TV or desktop setup; otherwise place the device near the router.
- Start with Auto quality and default latency, then increase quality only after playback is stable.
- Keep a second device or network available for a quick scope test instead of repeatedly refreshing one failing player.
Bottom line
Buffering is usually solved by matching quality to sustained bandwidth, reducing Wi-Fi variability, and removing browser or device playback conflicts. Audio delay requires a separate check: rebuild the player buffer, leave low-latency mode if it is too fragile, and compare wired and wireless audio paths. When the same fault follows the Game Awards feed across networks and devices, report the timed symptoms to the platform or broadcaster rather than continuing to tune your home setup.
