Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →BthA2DP.sys is a Windows Bluetooth audio component, not a file you should replace from a download site. A crash naming it usually reflects an interaction between the Bluetooth adapter driver, a recent Windows update, pairing, audio settings, firmware, or failing radio hardware. Install current Windows and manufacturer drivers first, then roll back or reinstall the adapter when timing points to a bad update. For headset-only failures, reset pairing and the output format.
What BthA2DP.sys does
BthA2DP.sys belongs to the Windows Bluetooth Classic Audio path. A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) carries higher-quality stereo audio from a computer to a headset, speaker, or other receiver. Windows creates audio endpoints according to the Bluetooth profiles the adapter and accessory support; A2DP is the profile used for music and other high-quality playback, while HFP is used for hands-free calling.

When Windows reports BthA2DP.sys in a blue screen such as SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, the filename identifies the component involved in the failed operation. It does not prove that the file itself is corrupt. The underlying trigger may be an outdated or incompatible adapter driver, a Windows patch, a pairing transaction, a sleep or wake transition, an audio-profile mismatch, firmware, or a defective radio.

| What you observe | Most useful first checks | Likely decision |
|---|---|---|
| Blue screen began immediately after Windows or driver updating | Install all current Windows updates; check the adapter manufacturer’s package | Roll back the adapter driver if the previous version was stable |
| Crash occurs while pairing a new phone, headset, or speaker | Update Windows, remove the device, restart Bluetooth, and pair again | Use the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter if pairing still crashes |
| Crash happens during music playback or streaming | Confirm A2DP support, select the Bluetooth output, and test the standard audio format | Reinstall the adapter driver if the crash persists |
| Bluetooth disappeared from Settings or Device Manager | Restart, inspect the Bluetooth section in Device Manager, and install OEM firmware or drivers | Escalate to hardware checks or a compatible USB radio if the internal adapter remains absent |
| No blue screen, but a headset has no sound | Remove and re-pair the accessory; choose it as the output device | Treat this as an endpoint or profile problem before replacing hardware |
| Failures appear randomly after sleep or wake | Install Windows, OEM driver, BIOS, and firmware updates | Use rollback or a clean reinstall if the timing matches an update |
Before changing drivers
- Save open work and sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Record whether the failure started after a Windows update, a driver update, sleep or wake, pairing, or a hardware change. Timing determines whether rollback or reinstall is safer.
- Note the exact Windows edition and whether the Bluetooth radio is internal or a USB device. The adapter’s name in Device Manager is needed when you look for an OEM package.
- If the computer is needed for work, download the manufacturer’s Bluetooth package before uninstalling the current device so you have a fallback if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.
1. Install every available Windows update
- Open Settings.
- Choose Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds this is under Update & Security).
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all offered quality, cumulative, and optional updates that apply to your system, then restart when prompted.
Windows 11 release note KB5124010, published September 22, 2026, says it resolves a crash with error code 0x139 while streaming Bluetooth audio and improves Bluetooth stability. If your Windows 11 device is offered that update or a later cumulative release, install it before attempting more invasive changes. The fix is specific to the builds covered by that release; it is not a promise that every BthA2DP.sys crash has the same cause.
Windows 10 also has a documented precedent. The February 8, 2022 KB5010342 release notes described blue screens during restart after installation or while pairing a new phone or audio device on affected systems. Microsoft stated that updates released March 22, 2022, or later addressed that issue; older affected builds could use a Known Issue Rollback mitigation. This history is why updating Windows is the first check when a crash follows patching or pairing.
2. Update the Bluetooth adapter driver
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth. The adapter may include the words Bluetooth or Radio in its name.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and test the same headset or speaker operation that triggered the crash.
Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the computer maker has a newer, model-specific package. Write down the exact computer model and visit its manufacturer’s support page. Download the Bluetooth driver listed for your Windows edition and architecture, then install it using the maker’s instructions. Prefer the PC maker’s package over a generic file from an unverified site because it is matched to the system’s radio and firmware.

- In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the adapter, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Choose the reason that best matches what happened and confirm.
- Restart the computer and repeat the Bluetooth action that previously failed.
The rollback control is unavailable when Windows has no previous package to restore. In that case, use the OEM package or the uninstall-and-restart procedure below rather than forcing a driver from an unrelated model.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the adapter
- Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a box to remove the driver package, select it only when you already have the correct OEM installer or a reliable Windows Update connection.
- Restart Windows. Microsoft says Windows normally detects the adapter and reinstalls its driver after the restart.
- If the adapter does not return, open Device Manager and use Action > Scan for hardware changes, then install the OEM Bluetooth package you downloaded for the exact model.
After reinstalling, pair the accessory again. A driver reset can remove the software association even when the accessory itself is unchanged.
5. Run the built-in Bluetooth troubleshooter
Windows 11 provides an automated Bluetooth troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Open Get Help from the Start menu, search for Bluetooth problems, and follow the guided checks. Allow it to apply suggested fixes, then restart if requested. Run this before editing the registry or deleting driver files; the troubleshooter can distinguish a disabled radio, a service problem, and a connection issue without manual registry changes.
6. Reset pairing and the audio output path
If the computer does not blue-screen but a headset or speaker fails after pairing, reset the connection before changing hardware.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices (Windows 10).
- Select the headset or speaker and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Restart Windows if the adapter or Bluetooth switch behaves inconsistently.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode and select Add device > Bluetooth. Complete pairing from the beginning.
- Open the sound output selector and choose the Bluetooth accessory explicitly. Do not assume Windows will switch from internal speakers after a re-pair.
Verify that the accessory supports A2DP. A device that supports only a hands-free profile may appear connected but cannot provide the expected high-quality stereo endpoint. If the accessory exposes several entries, choose the stereo or music output for playback rather than the hands-free entry when both are available.
Use a conservative audio format
When the advanced format control is available, open the Bluetooth playback device’s properties, find the advanced format setting, and select 2 channel, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz. Apply the change and test playback. This setting is a compatibility check, not a universal performance rule; the control may be absent on some Windows editions, drivers, or accessories.
7. Check firmware, BIOS, and the physical radio
Microsoft lists hardware malfunction and recent updates among causes of Bluetooth disappearance. Check the computer manufacturer’s support page for optional BIOS or UEFI updates and Bluetooth or system-firmware packages that match the exact model and Windows version. Follow the maker’s power and backup instructions during firmware installation; interrupting firmware updates can leave a computer unusable.

8. Consider a USB Bluetooth adapter only after software checks
A compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can replace a failed internal radio, but it is a hardware workaround rather than a cure for a corrupt Windows installation. Before buying, verify:
- Support for your Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition.
- The adapter’s chipset and the driver source supplied by its manufacturer.
- Support for the Bluetooth profiles your headset or speaker needs, especially A2DP for stereo audio.
- Whether the computer’s security policy allows USB radios and whether another Bluetooth driver must be disabled.
Remove or disable the failed internal adapter only according to the computer maker’s instructions. Install the USB adapter’s official package, restart, and pair the accessory as a new device. If both radios remain enabled, Windows may select the wrong endpoint or retain an unstable driver association.

Crash immediately after a Windows update
Install the newest cumulative update offered for the computer. If the crash began with the update and no newer fix is available, use the Bluetooth adapter’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver path. Do not remove a security update solely because a pairing attempt failed; first check whether a later release addresses the issue.
Crash while pairing a phone, headset, or speaker
Install current Windows updates, remove the old Bluetooth entry, restart Bluetooth, and pair again. The Windows 10 KB5010342 incident shows that pairing-triggered blue screens can be update-related rather than evidence that the new accessory is defective. If the failure continues, update or reinstall the adapter driver and run the Windows 11 Get Help troubleshooter where available.

Crash only during streaming
Confirm that the accessory supports A2DP, select its stereo output, and test 2-channel, 16-bit, 48 kHz when that format is exposed. Install the OEM Bluetooth package and current Windows updates. A crash that remains limited to one accessory should also be tested with a second A2DP headset or speaker to separate the computer’s radio from the original accessory.
Bluetooth vanishes after sleep or wake
Restart Windows, install the OEM Bluetooth package, and check optional BIOS or UEFI and firmware updates. If the problem began after a driver change, roll back. If Device Manager still cannot detect the radio after these steps, treat the condition as a possible hardware fault rather than repeatedly pairing the accessory.
What not to do
- Do not download BthA2DP.sys from a file-sharing, DLL, or “missing system file” website.
- Do not copy a SYS file from another computer; Windows driver files are tied to the operating system build, adapter, and signing package.
- Do not install a Bluetooth driver intended for a different PC model or radio chipset.
- Do not keep retrying a pairing operation that reliably triggers a blue screen; update or roll back the driver first.
- Do not assume a connected icon means stereo audio is active; check the selected endpoint and A2DP capability.
When to contact the PC maker
Contact the computer manufacturer when the correct Windows and OEM drivers are installed, rollback or reinstall has been attempted, firmware is current, and the radio still disappears or crashes. Provide the exact stop code, the BthA2DP.sys filename, Windows version, adapter model, trigger (pairing, streaming, sleep, or update), and the steps already completed. If an external USB adapter works while the internal radio does not, tell support; that comparison helps identify a failing internal module.
