If your browser keeps filling an old password or the wrong account, do not clear all browsing data first. Find which credential manager supplied the suggestion, open that manager, inspect every saved login for the site, and then select, edit, or remove only the incorrect record. If the right login is missing, check the active browser profile, account sync, imported credential names, and any separate password-manager extension.
The exact menu labels change between browser releases, but the diagnosis is consistent: autofill can come from local browser storage, an account-synced manager, or other password software. The steps below separate those sources before you change anything.

Why browser autofill chooses the wrong login
A browser does not necessarily have one password list. A suggestion can come from the browser’s local profile, a cloud account connected to that profile, a device password service, or a third-party password-manager extension. Firefox specifically warns that other password-manager software can affect how saved logins behave (Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance).

The safe fix sequence
1. Identify who supplied the suggestion
- Click the username or password field once without submitting the form.
- Look at the suggestion panel for its icon, account name, or wording. A browser-branded panel usually points to its built-in manager; a separate icon or floating prompt often indicates an extension or device password service.
- Open the browser’s extensions or add-ons page and note every password-filling extension. Temporarily turn off competing autofill tools one at a time if you cannot tell which one is responding; do not delete stored credentials while the source is unknown.
- On a managed work or school device, check whether an administrator-installed password service is supplying the entry. Its records may not appear in the browser’s own password page.
This identification step prevents a common mistake: editing a browser record while a separate manager immediately fills its own, different copy.
2. Inspect all saved entries for the site
Open the manager that supplied the suggestion and search for the site’s domain, product name, and mobile or desktop app name. Imported records are not always filed under the name you expect. Chrome’s help specifically recommends searching the Google Password Manager when an imported login seems absent; saved Google Account passwords can also be managed at passwords.google.com.
Read the username or email attached to every matching entry before changing anything. If the service has separate personal, work, administrator, or regional portals, verify the full domain as well as the account name. A record for portal.example.com may not be the same login as one for accounts.example.com.
3. Choose the intended account instead of accepting the first suggestion
When several records are listed, select the entry whose username or email matches the account you intend to use. Firefox explicitly supports choosing among multiple logins for one site. If only one suggestion appears but it belongs to another account, open the manager directly rather than repeatedly submitting that credential.
For a one-time sign-in, choosing the correct suggestion is enough. For a lasting fix, continue by correcting the stored record so the wrong entry does not keep winning the autofill selection.
4. Edit or remove only the incorrect record
Use the manager’s edit control to replace an obsolete username or password. Chrome documents editing and removing saved passwords in its password controls (Chrome Help). Firefox lets you edit or delete an entry in its Password Manager, and it can offer to update a saved login after you enter the correct credentials (Firefox Password Manager help).

- Edit when the record is for the right account but contains an old password or a mistyped username.
- Delete when the record is clearly for an account you no longer use, provided you have another way to sign in.
- Keep separate entries when both accounts are legitimate; renaming or deleting one can make the other harder to identify.
After saving an edit, close and reopen the login page, then verify the displayed username before submitting. If the site asks to save a new password, accept the update only after confirming that the username and domain are correct.
5. Check autofill, profile, and sync state
A correct record can still be unavailable if autofill is disabled or you are viewing a different browser profile. Check the browser’s password settings for an option that fills usernames and passwords automatically. In Edge, Microsoft’s current privacy guidance identifies the Autofill passwords and passkeys toggle under Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager (Microsoft Edge support).
In Firefox, confirm that you opened the intended profile and that Logins and Passwords is included in Sync. Firefox stores credentials separately from Google Password Manager, so a login saved in one system will not automatically appear in the other. Sync changes can take time to propagate or may be disabled by an organization.
In Chrome, verify that the browser profile is signed in to the account that owns the saved password. Google Account passwords and passwords stored only in a local profile can appear in different places, so check both the in-browser manager and Google Password Manager online when appropriate.
6. If the record exists but is not offered, check field detection
Chrome notes that it may fail to suggest a saved password when it cannot recognize the page’s login fields (Chrome Help). This is common with embedded sign-in dialogs, custom web components, and pages that reveal the password field only after a username is entered.

- Use the manager’s copy or fill command for that specific record if it provides one.
- Try the site’s main sign-in page rather than a checkout, embedded, or redirected form.
- Reload the page after enabling autofill, and test in a private window only if the site itself behaves differently there.
If the credential is filled but the website rejects it, stop submitting the same password. The site may have changed or locked the password even though the browser’s record is accurate. Use the site’s account-recovery process, then update the saved entry with the newly issued password.

Chrome: locate and correct the saved password
Open the correct manager
Chrome’s password controls are available from the profile or password settings area; current labels can vary by release. Open the three-dot menu, go to the password and autofill controls, and open Google Password Manager. You can also manage passwords saved to the signed-in Google Account at passwords.google.com. Authenticate with your device or account if Chrome requests it before revealing a password.
Find duplicate or imported records
Search by the site’s domain, service name, and any app name used during import. Open each result and compare the username. Do not assume the newest-looking entry is correct: an imported record can have an old password while a manually saved record has the current one.
Save the correction
Edit the record when the account is right but the password is stale, or remove only the unwanted account. Return to the sign-in page and confirm that the intended username is shown before submitting. If Chrome still offers nothing, test the field-detection steps above rather than deleting the entire password database.
Firefox: select among logins and update the right one
Use Firefox Password Manager
Open Firefox’s Password Manager from its password settings and search for the site. Firefox can keep multiple logins for one site, so inspect the account name in each result. Its product page summarizes the behavior: “If you have more than one login for a site, you can just select the account you want and we’ll take it from there.” (Firefox Password Manager)
Edit, delete, or accept an update prompt
Edit the username or password directly when you know which field is wrong. Alternatively, enter the correct credentials on the site and accept Firefox’s prompt to update the saved login. Delete an entry only after checking that it is not the only recovery path for a separate account.
Check profile and Sync when a login is missing
Firefox profiles have separate saved-login databases. Switch to the profile where the login was created, then verify that Logins and Passwords is selected in Sync. If a third-party password manager is enabled, it may be filling or suppressing Firefox’s own suggestions; Mozilla lists such software as a troubleshooting consideration (Firefox troubleshooting).

Edge: verify the password manager and autofill toggle
Microsoft’s support page places Edge’s password controls at Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager and documents the Autofill passwords and passkeys switch (Microsoft Edge support). Open that manager, search for the site, and compare the account name before filling. If autofill is disabled, enable it and revisit the page.

Edge may require device-based authentication before showing or filling a saved password. That prompt is a privacy safeguard, not evidence that the password is wrong. If a different extension displays the suggestion, disable competing autofill sources temporarily and correct the record in the manager that owns it.

Safari’s Passwords controls differ by macOS and iOS release, and the available official guidance is version-specific. Do not follow Chrome, Firefox, or Edge menu paths in Safari. Instead, identify whether the suggestion comes from Safari’s Passwords system, iCloud-synced credentials, or another password manager, then use the current Passwords settings for that Apple release to search the site and inspect the account name.
If you cannot tell which service is filling the field, disable competing password extensions one at a time and test again. The same rule applies: preserve valid accounts, edit the specific stale record, and use the website’s recovery flow if the server rejects the password.

What not to do
- Do not clear all cookies, browsing history, or saved passwords as your first move. Broad deletion can remove working logins and does not correct a credential held by another manager.
- Do not repeatedly submit a password that the site rejects. Repeated failures can trigger rate limits or account lockouts.
- Do not delete every entry for a domain before checking usernames, subdomains, and account roles.
- Do not assume a browser profile’s name identifies the account that owns synced passwords; verify the signed-in account in the manager.
- Do not copy a menu path from another browser or an older release. Use the current labels shown in your installation and the linked official help.
Prevent the wrong account from returning
Keep account names distinguishable
When a manager allows notes or labels, identify work, personal, administrator, and regional accounts clearly. Before saving a new password, check that the username displayed in the save prompt is the one you intend to retain.

Limit competing autofill sources
Running a browser manager and a separate password extension at the same time can create duplicate suggestions. Decide which service should fill passwords, then disable its competitors’ autofill feature or extension rather than deleting credentials from both.
Review sync deliberately
Use one intended account for devices that should share passwords, and confirm that password syncing is enabled only where appropriate. On shared or managed devices, avoid enabling sync for a personal account unless the device policy permits it.
Update immediately after a password change
After changing a password on the website, update the corresponding manager entry while the correct username is visible. If the browser offers to save a credential for a different account, cancel and correct the username first.
When the problem is the website, not autofill
Autofill can accurately supply a password that the website no longer accepts. Password expiration, an account lock, a changed sign-in domain, or a required second factor can all look like a bad autofill. Test the same username and password by typing them manually only once, without copying an unverified value from another source. If the site still rejects them, use its password-reset or account-recovery page and then replace the saved credential.
Conversely, if manually typing the known-good credentials works but autofill fails, the saved record, field detection, or competing manager is the likely problem. Return to the manager-specific steps instead of changing the account password again.

- Identify the manager or extension that produced the visible suggestion.
- Search that manager by domain, site name, and imported app name.
- Compare usernames and keep separate legitimate accounts separate.
- Select the intended login for a one-time fix, then edit or remove only the incorrect record.
- Check autofill settings, active profile, signed-in account, and password Sync.
- Investigate unrecognized login fields when the correct record exists but is not offered.
- Use account recovery when the website rejects a credential, then save the replacement password.
The durable solution is targeted: correct the record that actually supplies autofill, while preserving valid accounts and confirming the website accepts the updated credential.
