Stop at the first failed step, identify the phone’s exact model and codename, and use the matching official LineageOS device guide. The correct recovery, firmware prerequisite, partition procedure and key combination depend on that combination of device and build; applying instructions for another codename can make the situation worse.
Start by stopping, not by wiping
If the installation has failed, do not continue with the next command simply because it appears in a generic tutorial. The LineageOS Wiki’s 10.or G guide states: “Do not continue after something fails.” That rule is particularly important when the failure involves firmware, bootloader communication or a recovery error.

Record what is on the screen before changing anything. Write down the manufacturer and model number, the LineageOS codename, the exact build or release, the recovery name and version, and the complete error text. Also note whether the phone is currently in recovery, in bootloader/fastboot mode, on a boot animation, or restarting repeatedly. These are different failure states with different remedies.

Phrases such as fastboot devices returning no output, “failed to read command,” and a first boot that appears stuck are useful clues, but they do not all mean the same thing.

Identify the exact device before choosing a fix
Confirm model and codename
Open the official installation page for the exact supported model, not merely a phone with a similar retail name. LineageOS device pages use codenames and often distinguish regional or carrier variants. A package or recovery intended for another codename is not an interchangeable substitute.
Use the device page’s model list and installation sequence as the authority for every partition, firmware and reboot instruction. The 10.or G guide is explicit about following its steps precisely; that warning applies even when a different phone appears to use the same processor or Android version.
Record the software state that existed before installation
- Stock operating-system version and security/firmware level, if known.
- LineageOS version and full build identifier.
- Recovery name and version used for the install.
- Whether the bootloader was in recovery, fastboot/bootloader mode, or the normal operating system when the failure occurred.
- Whether any optional add-on package was installed, and at what point.
Without those details, it is impossible to know which firmware image, recovery sequence or reset instruction applies. A guide for one device may require a different stock firmware baseline from a guide published for another device.

When fastboot cannot see the phone
A blank result from fastboot devices is a connection problem to investigate before changing the phone’s partitions. Confirm that the phone is actually in the bootloader/fastboot state requested by its guide, then check the computer-side requirements for that platform and device.
Try the cable and port checks in the 10.or G instructions. That page says, “When the output is empty, check your USB cable (preferably use a USB Type-A 2.0 one) and port!” It also mentions a USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub for certain hangs. This is a narrow host-connection measure, not a cure for an operating-system boot loop or an incompatible installation package.

- Reconnect the cable directly and try a different USB port.
- If your computer uses adapters or a hub, test the connection in the arrangement recommended by the device guide.
- Check the platform-specific driver, permission or udev requirements described by the official instructions.
- Run
fastboot devicesagain and save the exact output, including an empty result.
If the phone is detected only intermittently, do not begin a flash while the connection is unstable. Resolve the host link first or obtain device-specific help with the recorded output.
Interpret ADB sideload messages correctly
The percentage shown by the computer is not always the final verdict. Several official LineageOS pages explain that an adb sideload transfer can appear to stop at about 47% and print one of these messages:
adb: failed to read command: Successadb: failed to read command: No erroradb: failed to read command: Undefined error: 0
Those messages can appear even when the operation has completed successfully. The notes on the 10.or G and z2_plus guides (10.or G installation and z2_plus upgrade) tell you to judge the result from the recovery screen and the next state required by the guide, not from that host-side line alone.
Do not assume success, either. An explicit failure shown by recovery, a package that was rejected, or a phone that never reaches the expected next step still requires diagnosis. Capture the recovery message and return to the exact device page rather than retrying random packages or commands.
Verify firmware, recovery and package before retrying
Check the required stock firmware version
Firmware requirements are device-specific. The sunfish installation guide requires Android 13 stock firmware before installing its LineageOS build. It warns that installing the wrong firmware version can cause installation failure, crashes after installation or permanent damage to the device. Android 13 is not a universal prerequisite; it must not be copied to another phone unless that phone’s own page says so.

Compare the firmware actually installed before LineageOS with the version named on your live device guide. If you cannot establish that match, pause and obtain the correct device-specific instructions. Reflashing a guessed vendor or firmware image is not a safe substitute for identifying the requirement.

Use the recovery named by the guide
Recovery compatibility is part of the installation procedure. Verify the recovery name, version and installation method against the official page for the codename and build you are using. A recovery that boots successfully can still lack the expected behavior for a particular LineageOS release.
Confirm the package and its source
Make sure the package is intended for the exact codename and release, and that the download completed as expected. If recovery reports a signature, compatibility or installation error, preserve that wording. Do not replace a rejected package with one for a similar model.
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop
Distinguish a loop from a slow first boot
A phone that repeatedly returns to the logo or boot animation is different from a device that remains on its first-boot animation. Watch whether it restarts on its own and note how long each cycle lasts. Avoid treating every long animation as proof that the installation failed.
The flo installation guide says its first boot usually takes no longer than 15 minutes and advises seeking assistance if it takes longer after the documented steps have been followed. That is guidance for flo, not a guaranteed cutoff for every LineageOS device or release.

Recheck the prerequisites in order
- Open the exact installation page for the codename and build.
- Confirm that the phone model matches the page’s supported models.
- Confirm the required stock firmware baseline.
- Confirm that the recommended recovery was used and that it is compatible with the build.
- Confirm that the LineageOS package came from the expected source and was accepted by recovery.
- List every optional add-on and when it was installed.
This sequence separates a wrong prerequisite from a boot-time configuration problem. It also prevents a destructive reset from hiding the original cause.
Be especially cautious with add-ons and recovery-offered apps
Some installation sequences allow Google Apps or other add-ons, but their position in the sequence matters. The earth guide’s example requires add-ons to be installed before the first boot. Installing them after the operating system has already started can leave the device in a state the guide does not support.
Some recoveries also offer extra applications or services. The flo and zerofltexx pages warn that certain recovery-offered add-ons can cause boot loops. That warning is not a blanket claim about every add-on or every device; check whether the warning appears on your exact page and follow that page’s order precisely.
If you installed an optional package and the loop began immediately afterward, record its name and the installation order. Do not add more packages in an attempt to “repair” the loop. The exact device guide must determine whether the package should be removed, whether a reset is required, or whether assistance is needed.
Understand the data-loss risk before any reset
“Format data” and “factory reset” are destructive operations, not harmless troubleshooting toggles. The earth installation guide states that formatting data deletes all files stored in internal storage. That can include photographs, downloads, authenticator data and files that were not backed up elsewhere.

Only perform a format or reset when the exact device guide calls for it and you understand what will be erased. If the phone still boots far enough to copy files, back up important data first. If it does not, assume that a format may make recovery of internal files impossible and seek device-specific advice before proceeding.
Do not substitute a wipe for a missing firmware prerequisite, an undetected fastboot connection or an incompatible package. A reset changes user data; it does not make the wrong codename, recovery or firmware correct.
What to do when an installation step fails
Use the failure point to decide whether to stop or continue. A host-side sideload message that the guide documents as benign is different from recovery reporting that verification or installation failed.

- Failure before the package is accepted: stop and verify connection, recovery mode, codename and package selection.
- Failure during firmware or partition work: stop immediately and consult the exact page; do not improvise a replacement image.
- Recovery reports success but the host prints a 47% sideload message: inspect recovery’s result and follow the remaining official steps.
- Failure after an add-on: record the add-on and order, then use the device page’s boot-loop guidance.
- Repeated restarts after all documented steps: preserve logs and screen text and seek help with the complete device and software details.
When the guide says not to continue after a failed step, treat that as a safety boundary. Repeating the same command without changing the identified cause rarely supplies useful information and may obscure which state the phone is in.

A safe information bundle for support
If the official page does not resolve the failure, provide a concise, reproducible description rather than only saying “LineageOS is bricked.” Include:
- Manufacturer, retail model number and LineageOS codename.
- LineageOS release and build identifier.
- Stock Android or firmware version installed before the attempt.
- Recovery name and version.
- Current screen: recovery, bootloader/fastboot, boot animation or repeated restart.
- Every command that was run and its complete output, including an empty
fastboot devicesresult. - The full recovery error, not a shortened paraphrase.
- Whether data was formatted and whether any add-on was installed before first boot.
Remove personal files, account identifiers and authentication tokens from logs before sharing them. The goal is to let someone match your state to the correct device page, not to encourage a generic flash recipe.
When to stop attempting repairs
Stop and seek device-specific assistance when the model or codename is uncertain, the required firmware cannot be verified, fastboot remains undetected after the guide’s connection checks, recovery reports a partition or verification failure, or the phone behaves differently from the documented sequence. Permanent damage is specifically listed as a possible consequence of the wrong firmware on sunfish, so uncertainty is a reason to pause rather than experiment.
