Start by printing your inkjet’s nozzle check or print-quality report. It helps tell whether ink is missing, printhead alignment is off, or the defect is more likely caused by paper, settings, or the file itself. Then choose the next step that matches the test—rather than cleaning repeatedly or replacing ink without evidence.
Match the defect to the first check

These symptoms can overlap. A printer-generated test page is useful because it separates a printer-side defect from a problem confined to one document or image.

Print a diagnostic pattern before maintenance
Find the nozzle check or print-quality report in the printer’s control-panel menu or its software. The exact label and path vary by model; use the manual for your printer rather than assuming another printer’s steps apply. Epson and HP both direct users to model-specific print-quality checks in their support material: Epson’s print-quality troubleshooting guide and HP’s Officejet 6600/6700 guidance.

- A clean nozzle pattern but misaligned lines or blurry text: Check the printer’s alignment pattern and run alignment if indicated.
- A clean printer test while one file still looks wrong: Check that file, its scaling, and the print settings instead of repeating maintenance.
Clean the printhead only when the test supports it
If the nozzle check shows missing segments, use the printer’s built-in cleaning cycle. Keep the printer powered and do not interrupt the cycle; print a fresh check afterward to see whether it helped. Avoid running repeated cleanings without rechecking the pattern.

Cleaning consumes ink. Epson’s cited guide says to clean only when print quality declines; for the printer family covered by that guide, if up to three cleanings do not improve quality, stop and wait at least six hours before checking again. If it remains poor, contact Epson. Those limits and timings are specific to that guide, not a rule for all inkjets. Follow your own model’s manual for its maintenance limits: Epson guide.
Align when text or lines are out of register
Alignment is a different remedy from nozzle cleaning. It can address grainy or blurry output and lines that do not line up. Some printers offer separate tests: Epson’s cited guide associates vertical alignment with blurry output or misaligned vertical rules, and horizontal alignment with horizontal banding. Use the on-screen procedure and select the test that matches the symptom; the options and steps depend on the model. Check paper, loading, and print settings
Paper problems and mismatched settings can resemble a printer fault. Try a fresh sheet of suitable paper, loaded with the printable side facing the direction specified by the printer. Avoid paper that is damp, curled, old, damaged, or loaded incorrectly. In the print dialog, make the selected paper type match the media in the tray; the printer may handle ink differently for plain, glossy, or other paper.

- For smears, let glossy prints dry before stacking or handling them. If marks persist, consult the model guide about paper-path cleaning rather than using an unapproved method.
- When changing media, update the print-dialog paper type as well as the physical paper.
Check ink and the file before replacing supplies
Low or old ink can contribute to faint output, but a streak by itself is not proof that a cartridge or tank needs replacement. Check the printer’s ink status and diagnostic pattern, then follow the model’s guidance. HP specifically cautions against cartridge replacement for the vertical-streak case described in its Officejet article. If replacement is indicated, confirm the cartridge or bottle number for your exact printer and region.

If the printer’s own test looks good but a photo is grainy or fuzzy, inspect the source image. A small or low-resolution image enlarged to fill a page can look soft even when the printer is working properly. Reduce the enlargement or use a higher-resolution original, and check that the print quality and paper type suit the job.

If the appropriate test and model-approved maintenance do not improve output, stop before trying to remove the printhead or apply third-party cleaning liquids.
