A blurry custom image has one of two causes: the source file is already soft, or RPG Maker is filtering, scaling, or compositing a sharp file during rendering. Open the image at 100% (its native size), then compare it with a screenshot from the game at the project’s actual display size. If the source is soft, return to the original artwork and export a sharper file at the intended in-game dimensions. If the source is crisp but the game image is not, investigate smoothing, non-integer scaling, project resolution, plugins, parallax layers, and the engine version.
Start by identifying which kind of blur you have
Do not begin by changing random export settings. First establish whether the defect exists in the file or is introduced after import. Open the original image in an editor at 100% or native size. A 100% view means one source pixel is shown as one screen pixel; it is the useful baseline for judging sharpness. Then capture the image in RPG Maker at the project’s normal display size and compare edges, text, diagonal lines, and transparent borders.

| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The file is soft before it enters the project | Low-resolution source, prior enlargement, repeated resampling, or a soft export | Reopen the original artwork and create a new export at the intended display dimensions |
| The file is crisp at native size but soft in the game | Runtime smoothing, scaling, project-size mismatch, or a plugin/rendering path | Check the asset’s displayed size, then test smoothing and scaling |
| Only one custom image is affected | That file’s dimensions, alpha edges, or import history | Compare it with an unaffected asset using the same display size |
| Tiles, faces, and text are all soft | Project resolution, core scripts, engine defect, or a display-size change | Test a clean project and verify the installed engine version before replacing files |
| Only a parallax or overlay layer looks different | Different layer scaling or filtering | Compare each layer at the same scale and inspect plugin settings |
“Pixelated” and “blurry” are not interchangeable. Pixelation can mean deliberate hard-edged pixels, while blur usually means interpolation has averaged neighboring pixels. A deliberately low-resolution image can look blocky but still be correctly rendered. Decide whether the intended style is crisp pixel art or smoothly antialiased artwork before choosing a fix.

Confirm the intended in-game dimensions
Write down three dimensions before editing: the source width and height, the size at which the image should appear in the game, and the project’s display resolution. A file can be perfectly sharp at its native size and still become soft when RPG Maker draws it at a different size. Conversely, a file enlarged in an editor may already contain blended pixels before the engine sees it.

- If the target size is the same as the source size, avoid runtime scaling whenever the relevant event, layer, or plugin permits it.
- If pixel art must be enlarged, test integer multiples such as 2×, 3×, or 4× with nearest-neighbor resampling. Integer scaling keeps each source pixel represented by an equal block of output pixels.
- If the target size is not an integer multiple, expect some uneven pixel widths or interpolation. Decide whether a slightly different target size, a redesigned source, or a smooth filter better serves the artwork.
- Do not repeatedly resize an already resized export. Each resampling pass can permanently soften edges, especially diagonal lines and small lettering.
Take a screenshot at the project’s actual display size, not only in a maximized editor window. A preview that looks sharp when enlarged may appear soft at the size players will see, and a tiny preview can make correctly rendered pixel art look jagged.
Prepare a sharper source image
Return to the original artwork
When the source is blurry, runtime settings cannot restore detail that was discarded during an earlier export. Go back to the original layered or vector artwork if available. Set the canvas to the final display dimensions, or create the image at a deliberate integer multiple and reduce it once using a suitable method. Export only after the dimensions and transparency have been checked.
Avoid enlarging a small photograph, screenshot, or compressed image and expecting it to become detailed. Enlargement can make the file larger without creating real edge information. If the image was designed for a larger canvas, crop or redraw the important elements instead of relying on a chain of upscales.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse nearest-neighbor for hard-edged pixel art
For sprites, icons, and other artwork built from discrete square pixels, nearest-neighbor resampling is the first method to test when changing size. It copies the nearest source pixel rather than averaging adjacent pixels, preserving hard boundaries. Inspect the result for jagged diagonals and uneven proportions; nearest-neighbor protects pixel boundaries, but it cannot correct a poorly designed source.
RPG Maker Web’s custom-tile tutorial demonstrates editing an image, indexing its colors in GIMP, and scaling it so it fits a pixelated game aesthetic. Treat that workflow as an example of preparing artwork for a particular style, not as a universal requirement. A painted illustration or antialiased interface element may be damaged by forcing it into indexed, hard-edged pixels.

Use a smooth method for artwork designed to be smooth
Painted backgrounds, photographs, and antialiased illustrations generally need a filter that blends neighboring pixels when reduced or transformed. If you use nearest-neighbor on that material, curves can become visibly stepped and fine detail can disappear. Choose the resampling method from the source’s visual design, then verify the final exported file at 100%.
Check transparency and edge colors
Transparent borders can expose resampling problems that are invisible against an editor’s checkerboard. A semitransparent edge may contain a matte color from the original background; when the image is scaled, that color can bleed into the visible outline. Inspect the image against the same kind of background used in the game. Look for halos around characters, one-pixel fringes, and colors leaking from neighboring tiles.
When a custom image sits beside other tiles, leave enough separation in the source for the intended layout and inspect the assembled result. A sharp source can still show a seam if a neighboring region is sampled during scaling.
Test bitmap smoothing in RPG Maker MZ
RPG Maker MZ exposes a bitmap smooth property. The MZ Bitmap API describes it as whether smooth scaling is applied. Its implementation uses linear scaling when the property is enabled and nearest-neighbor scaling when it is disabled. This makes the property the most direct MZ-specific test for a crisp pixel-art asset.
- Back up the project before changing core scripts, plugins, or imported resources.
- Identify the exact render path for the image: a character, picture, tileset element, parallax, overlay, or plugin-created sprite. A setting that affects one path may not affect another.
- For a pixel-art test, disable bitmap smoothing wherever that asset’s render path allows it. Preview the image at the project’s real display size.
- Capture a second preview with smoothing enabled. Compare one-pixel outlines, text, diagonal edges, and transparent borders rather than judging only the overall impression.
- Keep the mode that matches the artwork. Nearest-neighbor is appropriate to test for hard-edged pixel art; linear filtering may be intentional for painted or antialiased work.
Do not assume that the MZ property behaves identically in MV, VX Ace, or a plugin’s own renderer. The documented linear-versus-nearest behavior is evidence for MZ’s Bitmap implementation, not a universal rule for every RPG Maker generation or extension.

Find and remove unwanted scaling
Check the asset’s display size
An image may be scaled by an event command, a picture setting, a layer configuration, a camera system, or a plugin. Compare the source dimensions with the dimensions shown in the game. If the image is being drawn at a non-integer scale, pixel art can appear uneven even with nearest-neighbor filtering; with linear filtering, it will usually look softer.

If the blur disappears, the image itself is probably sound and the scaling operation is the cause. You can then choose between preparing a source at the required size, changing the display scale, or accepting a filter appropriate to the art.
Check the project resolution and window scaling
A project rendered at one resolution and shown in a window or display mode with another resolution may be enlarged by the runtime or operating system. Compare a screenshot captured at the project’s internal size with one captured after window enlargement. If only the enlarged view is soft, the asset may be correct and the final presentation is being scaled.
Keep the project’s internal resolution, the asset’s intended dimensions, and the player window’s scale in your notes. This prevents a common mistake: editing the source to compensate for a display setting that affects every asset.
Inspect plugin and layer behavior
Disable nonessential plugins temporarily, one group at a time, and retest the same image. A plugin can resize a sprite, apply a camera transform, draw to a render texture, or choose its own filtering mode. If the image becomes sharp after a plugin is disabled, restore plugins one at a time to identify the conflicting render path and check that plugin’s version-specific settings.

Parallax and overlay projects deserve a separate comparison. RPG Maker Web’s “Parallax Mapping in MZ: Basics and Tips,” dated June 10, 2026, discusses how pixelated and softer edges can behave across parallax and overlay layers. Place a sharp test grid or a small pixel-art sample on each layer, keep their displayed scales equal, and look for a difference between the base map, parallax image, and overlay. A single layer using a different scale or filter can make the composition appear inconsistent.
Separate custom-asset problems from built-in RPG Maker defects
If only your imported image is blurry, focus on its dimensions, transparency, scaling, and render path. If default tiles, faces, and text are also affected, treat the problem as a project-wide issue rather than endlessly re-exporting the custom file.
RPG Maker MZ version 1.1.1 update notes, released December 15, 2020, list a fix for blurry tiles in Outside_A1 and World_A2. The same notes list a fix for text or faces becoming blurred when the screen size was larger than the default. These are historical, release-specific defects. They do not prove that every current blur is caused by the same bug, but they make the installed version and affected asset types important diagnostic facts.
- Record the exact RPG Maker engine and project version.
- Create or open a clean project using the same display-size settings.
- Compare one affected built-in tile, face, or text element with the corresponding element in the clean project.
- If the clean project is sharp, compare core scripts, plugins, screen-size changes, and updated resources in the original project.
- Back up the project before copying updated resources or changing core files. Replace only the resources relevant to the confirmed defect, then retest the custom image separately.
The MZ product information also states that its built-in map save function saves pixel perfect rather than resizing. That statement applies to map saving; it is not a universal setting that guarantees every custom image, picture, parallax, or plugin-rendered layer will be pixel perfect.

The following order minimizes destructive edits and makes each result meaningful.
Best Value
- Archive the project. Make a copy before changing files, plugins, core scripts, or project resolution.
- Record the evidence. Note the engine version, asset type, source dimensions, intended display dimensions, project resolution, and whether a plugin or display-size change is involved.
- Inspect the source at native size. If it is already soft, rebuild it from the original artwork. If it is crisp, leave the source unchanged while testing runtime behavior.
- Compare one asset at native display size. Remove scaling temporarily if the relevant event or layer permits it. This isolates interpolation from image quality.
- Test MZ filtering. For pixel art, compare nearest-neighbor behavior with smoothing disabled against linear filtering with smoothing enabled. Use the same screenshot size for both tests.
- Check project-wide symptoms. If default tiles, faces, or text are blurry, reproduce the issue in a clean project and verify the version before touching resources.
- Isolate plugins and layers. Disable nonessential plugins, then compare map, parallax, overlay, and picture paths at the same scale.
- Inspect the final export. Check transparency, halos, seams, and neighboring tiles against the game background.
- Apply one change at a time. Keep a before-and-after screenshot and revert any change that improves one layer while damaging another.
This sequence distinguishes a bad source from a bad render path. It also prevents a project-wide resolution problem from being “fixed” by making one custom file unnaturally sharp or oversized.
Choose the remedy by art style and scope
| Situation | Recommended test | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Crisp pixel art, enlarged by an integer multiple | Nearest-neighbor resampling and MZ smoothing disabled where supported | Preserves hard pixels but can emphasize jagged diagonals |
| Painted or antialiased artwork | Linear smoothing or an appropriate high-quality resample | Preserves soft transitions but is unsuitable for deliberately blocky pixels |
| Sharp source, non-integer runtime scale | Use the intended display dimensions or redesign the source for the target size | May require changing layout or project settings |
| One custom asset only | Re-export from the original and inspect alpha edges | Does not address a separate project-wide filtering problem |
| Many built-in assets affected | Check engine version, screen-size changes, core scripts, and clean-project behavior | Updating project files requires a backup and careful scope control |
| Parallax or overlay mismatch | Compare each layer’s scale and filtering independently | Layer-specific settings may need plugin documentation for the installed version |
There is no universal “pixel perfect” switch for every asset type. The correct setting depends on whether the problem originates in the file, whether the image is scaled, the art’s intended edge treatment, and which renderer is drawing it.
What to include when asking for further help
A useful bug report lets someone reproduce the rendering path instead of guessing. Include:
- The exact RPG Maker product and version, including whether the project is MZ, MV, VX Ace, or another edition.
- The asset type: character, tileset image, picture, parallax, overlay, face, or plugin-created graphic.
- The source width and height, intended in-game width and height, and project display resolution.
- Whether the source is crisp at 100% outside the game.
- Whether the image is scaled by an event, camera, plugin, window size, or layer setting.
- Whether smoothing is enabled or disabled on the relevant MZ bitmap path, if that path exposes the setting.
- Whether built-in tiles, faces, or text show the same symptom.
- A screenshot at the project’s actual display size and, if useful, a magnified crop showing the affected edge.
State what changed immediately before the blur appeared, such as a screen-size adjustment, plugin installation, resource update, or export from a different editor. That detail often separates a source-file regression from a runtime change.
Common mistakes that make blur worse
- Upscaling a blurry export repeatedly: this enlarges softened pixels instead of recovering detail. Rebuild from the original.
- Forcing nearest-neighbor on every image: smooth illustrations and antialiased interfaces can look harsh or jagged under a pixel-art filter.
- Judging only a magnified preview: inspect the asset at native size and at the actual game display size.
- Changing project resolution before testing one asset: a global change can affect every map, face, tile, and text element and obscure the original cause.
- Replacing core files without a backup: version-specific fixes can introduce mismatches if copied into an incompatible project.
- Ignoring transparent edges: matte-colored halos and neighboring-tile bleed may be mistaken for general blur.
- Assuming MZ behavior applies elsewhere: the documented
smoothimplementation is specific to MZ’s Bitmap API and should not be projected onto other engines or plugins.
Final diagnosis
If the source file is blurry at native size, edit or re-export it at the intended dimensions. If it is crisp outside RPG Maker, first remove unintended scaling, then test the MZ bitmap smoothing mode that matches the art style, and check project resolution, plugins, and parallax layers. When default graphics are also affected, verify the engine version and compare a clean project before updating resources. The combination of source-size evidence, a controlled filter test, and a known display scale identifies the cause without sacrificing image quality elsewhere.
