If DLSS 5 is making a game look blurry or distorted, first turn off the separate DLSS Neural Rendering option and compare the same scene. If softness remains, test DLSS Super Resolution, its quality mode, and the game’s other upscaler or anti-aliasing option one at a time. Persistent ghosting, flicker, or broken textures may be an implementation defect that only the game developer can correct.
Identify which DLSS feature is changing the image
“DLSS 5” is not one single image-quality switch. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, while the in-game menu uses the label DLSS Neural Rendering. Neural Rendering adds lighting and material effects. It is separate from DLSS Super Resolution, which reconstructs a higher-resolution frame from a lower-resolution input by using motion information and previous-frame data.

That distinction determines the correct fix. Turning off Neural Rendering will not necessarily remove softness caused by Super Resolution, a low quality preset, temporal anti-aliasing, or a game’s own rendering bug. Diagnose each control independently instead of assuming every artifact comes from DLSS 5.

A uniformly soft image suggests a reconstruction or resolution choice. A trail behind a moving player points toward temporal behavior. A single muddy wall or character outfit suggests a texture or mip-map problem. Reflections or materials that become visibly wrong only when Neural Rendering is enabled implicate that optional effect more directly. Classifying the symptom first prevents you from changing unrelated settings.

Fastest fix: disable DLSS Neural Rendering
- Launch the supported game and open its main menu.
- Open Video Settings, Graphics, or the equivalent display-options page.
- Find the setting named DLSS Neural Rendering.
- Switch it to Off, apply the change, and reload the scene if the game requests it.
- Return to the identical camera position and compare a still and moving view.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 FAQ, updated September 3, 2026, explicitly says that DLSS 5 is optional and can be turned off. The setting is therefore a valid diagnostic control, not a hidden driver tweak. If the image becomes normal immediately, the Neural Rendering effect was responsible for the change you disliked. You can leave it disabled or re-enable it later after testing other options.
Do not judge the result from a different location or a different lighting state. Neural Rendering changes lighting and materials, so a scene can naturally look different even when neither mode is malfunctioning. Compare the same objects, the same camera direction, and the same amount of movement. If the game has to reload shaders or restart a level after changing the option, wait for that process before drawing a conclusion.
NBA 2K27 menu path
For NBA 2K27, NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 driver article gives a specific sequence: install the new GeForce Game Ready Driver, start the game, open Video Settings, and toggle DLSS Neural Rendering alongside the other DLSS and Reflex choices. The menu wording may differ in another title, so use the label shown by that game rather than looking for a generic “DLSS 5” switch.
If you cannot find the option in NBA 2K27, confirm that the driver installation completed and that you launched the updated game afterward. A launcher, benchmark, or older executable may not expose the same controls as the supported game build.
Test one setting at a time
Use a controlled comparison so that a change in one option is not mistaken for an improvement from another. Choose a repeatable location with fine text, hair, fencing, foliage, or other high-frequency detail. Keep the display resolution, field of view, camera position, lighting, and motion state the same. Capture a screenshot or short clip before and after each change.
Change only one item, then wait for the game to finish applying it. Some titles rebuild shaders or reload a scene after a graphics change; compare only after that process completes. A still image can reveal texture softness, while a moving camera reveals ghosting, trailing, or shimmer. Record which symptom changes with each setting.
Use both a paused view and a repeatable motion test. For example, stand in the same spot, capture a still of a detailed surface, then make the same slow camera pan each time. If the image is sharp when paused but smears while moving, report the motion behavior rather than describing it simply as blur. That distinction gives the developer a more useful reproduction case.

If blur remains, inspect DLSS Super Resolution
With Neural Rendering disabled, look for a separate DLSS Super Resolution control. Its job is to render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution output. The available modes and names vary, but games commonly expose a quality choice such as higher-quality, balanced, performance, or ultra-performance. Do not assume that one mode is universally sharpest: the result depends on the game engine, output resolution, motion, and implementation.
| Control | What it does | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS Neural Rendering | Adds neural lighting and material effects; optional in supported games. | On versus off in the same scene, especially where lighting or surfaces look distorted. |
| DLSS Super Resolution | Reconstructs a higher-resolution frame from lower-resolution input using motion data and prior-frame feedback. | Each available quality mode at the same output resolution. |
| Alternative upscaler | Uses the game’s other reconstruction method, if offered. | Image stability and detail against the DLSS mode in an identical scene. |
| Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) | Uses the game’s conventional temporal anti-aliasing path rather than DLSS reconstruction. | Fine detail, edge stability, and motion clarity; preference can vary by game. |
NVIDIA’s DLSS guidance notes that image quality varies by game and resolution. Its historical DLSS Q&A also cautions that some players may prefer TAA in one game and DLSS in another. Treat that as a reason to compare, not as proof that TAA or any particular DLSS preset is always better.

A mode that looks clearest in a static screenshot may not be the best choice during play. Examine thin geometry, foliage, hair, signs, and distant objects while moving the camera. Note whether a sharper-looking mode introduces more shimmer or aliasing, or whether a softer mode produces steadier edges. The practical choice is the mode that handles the artifact you notice most while maintaining acceptable performance at your chosen output resolution.
Do not add a sharpening value unless the specific game documents and exposes one. The official DLSS 5 material does not describe a universal player-accessible sharpness control that corrects every title and artifact. A slider in one game may belong to that game’s post-processing system rather than DLSS itself.

Global softness
If the whole frame looks soft, including static menus rendered in the 3D scene, check Super Resolution and its quality mode first. A lower internal resolution can reduce fine detail even when the reconstruction is functioning normally. Compare the game’s native-resolution or alternate anti-aliasing option if one exists, then choose the clearest mode that still delivers acceptable performance.
Check the display resolution shown in the game, not only the operating system’s desktop setting. Keep that output resolution fixed while comparing modes. Changing both resolution and DLSS quality at once makes it impossible to tell which change affected the image.
Ghosting or trails during movement
Ghosting appears as a second image or a smeared trail behind players, objects, or camera movement. Compare a stationary view with a slow camera pan and capture the moving case. If disabling Neural Rendering does not change the trail, the cause may be Super Resolution, motion-vector data, or another temporal effect rather than Neural Rendering itself.
Describe whether the trail follows a character, appears around the entire scene, or occurs only during a particular animation. NVIDIA’s developer guidance identifies motion vectors and jitter as integration considerations, so a reproducible moving clip is more valuable than a single still screenshot for this symptom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFlicker, shimmer, or unstable edges
Flicker on thin geometry, foliage, wires, or specular surfaces can be temporal instability. Test the same object while standing still and while moving. Compare DLSS with the game’s other anti-aliasing path. Keep in mind that a different mode can trade flicker for softness or aliasing; judge the artifact that matters most in your game.
Record whether the instability changes when you rotate the camera slowly, sprint, or merely move the subject. This helps separate a reconstruction issue from a scene-specific material or lighting problem. Avoid changing several anti-aliasing and resolution options before capturing that comparison.
Localized blurry or low-detail textures
When only selected surfaces look muddy while the rest of the frame is sharp, a texture-streaming or mip-map problem is possible. NVIDIA’s developer integration guidance warns that missing mip-map bias can leave textures blurry, smudgy, or stuck at a low level of detail. That is an implementation issue for the game, not a universal player control. Report the affected location and include a clip rather than editing game files.

Distorted lighting or materials
Odd reflections, lighting patterns, or material behavior that disappear when Neural Rendering is disabled point toward that optional effect. Keep it off while playing, or report the scene to the developer if you want the feature enabled. Include whether the problem occurs only at a particular resolution, camera angle, or lighting condition.
Why results differ between games
DLSS quality is not determined by the name of the mode alone. NVIDIA’s DLSS Q&A explains that results vary with the game engine, the content being rendered, the training and implementation, and the output resolution. A setting that looks excellent in one title can show different edge behavior or motion artifacts in another. That is why an absolute claim that “DLSS is always sharper than TAA” or that one preset fixes every blur problem is unreliable.
Use the game’s own scene as the test environment. Compare the same resolution and the same camera path, and make your choice from what you can actually see in that title. If a patch changes the rendering implementation, repeat the comparison instead of assuming your earlier preference still applies.
Confirm that your setup is eligible and current
DLSS 5 support is time-sensitive. NVIDIA’s FAQ updated September 3, 2026 lists support for RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops and for GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs. The same FAQ identifies NBA 2K27 as the game in which the feature became available. A different GPU generation, cloud tier, or game may not expose the setting at all.
- Check the game’s current patch notes or support page for DLSS 5 availability.
- Install the current graphics driver recommended for that game. NVIDIA specifically required its new Game Ready Driver for NBA 2K27’s enablement instructions.
- Restart the game after a driver or graphics-feature update so the new rendering path is loaded.
- Verify that you are changing the setting in the active display profile, not a launcher preview or a different executable.
Support lists can change as games and drivers are updated. If a setting is absent, do not assume it is hidden or damaged; first verify the title, patch, hardware or cloud tier, and driver combination. Conversely, seeing a DLSS option does not prove that every DLSS 5 feature is active, so use the exact label shown in the game.
Do not buy a new GPU, monitor, power supply, or game as a presumed blur fix. The documented remedy is a software setting change or a game-side correction; no official player-side hardware upgrade is established as a cure for these artifacts.
Use a repeatable troubleshooting sequence
- Document the baseline. Write down the game version, GPU or cloud service, output resolution, frame-generation or Reflex choices, Super Resolution mode, and whether Neural Rendering is on.
- Disable Neural Rendering. Compare the same still and moving scene.
- Test Super Resolution modes. Keep Neural Rendering off while comparing each available quality preset.
- Compare another reconstruction path. If the game offers a different upscaler, native rendering, or TAA, test it in the same scene.
- Check temporal behavior. Record whether the complaint is softness, ghosting, flicker, or a localized texture defect.
- Apply updates. Install the current game patch and graphics driver, then repeat the controlled comparison.
- Escalate with evidence. Send the developer your settings and a screenshot or video if the defect remains.
This order isolates the optional Neural Rendering effect before changing reconstruction settings. It also gives a developer enough information to reproduce the problem instead of receiving a vague report that “DLSS looks bad.”
Keep a short change log while testing. Write down the old value, the new value, and the visible result after each step. If an update or restart changes the symptom, note that as well. A precise sequence is especially useful when the issue appears only in one level, match, replay, or lighting condition.

What developers may need to fix
NVIDIA’s Streamline integration guidance identifies several implementation details that can affect image quality. Inaccurate or missing motion vectors can produce ghosting and unstable reconstruction. Incorrect jitter information can interfere with temporal sampling. Missing mip-map bias can cause blurry or smudgy textures. These checks belong to the game’s rendering integration and cannot be reliably repaired through an ordinary player menu.
For that reason, do not modify DLLs, replace rendering buffers, or install experimental research models as a first-line fix. NVIDIA’s DLSS Research material warns that experimental models may be unvalidated and can regress. Unsupported file changes can also prevent the game from launching or make a future update overwrite the change.
When the evidence points to integration, the useful action is a clear developer report, not a collection of unofficial files. Tell the developer which feature was enabled, which comparison changed the result, and whether the problem reproduces after a clean update. This lets the studio investigate its motion-vector, jitter, texture, or Neural Rendering implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to report a persistent defect
Contact the game developer through its official support channel when the problem survives the individual tests. Include:
- Game title, exact version, and platform.
- GPU model or GeForce NOW tier.
- Display resolution and refresh mode.
- Whether DLSS Neural Rendering was on or off.
- DLSS Super Resolution mode and any alternate upscaler or TAA setting.
- A description of the symptom: global softness, ghosting, flicker, distorted lighting, or a localized texture.
- A screenshot for still defects and a short video for motion-related artifacts.
- The scene, camera direction, and steps needed to reproduce it.
State whether disabling Neural Rendering changes the result. That single comparison helps support staff separate the optional DLSS 5 effect from Super Resolution and from a broader engine defect. If the issue is motion-only, make sure the video shows the camera or subject moving and, when possible, includes the same scene with the setting changed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for a “DLSS 5” label. The menu label NVIDIA documents is “DLSS Neural Rendering.”
- Changing several options simultaneously. You lose the ability to identify which setting caused the improvement or regression.
- Assuming all blur is Neural Rendering. Super Resolution, TAA, texture streaming, and implementation errors can remain after Neural Rendering is off.
- Judging only a static screenshot. Ghosting and flicker often appear only while the camera or subject moves.
- Using an unsupported DLL or experimental model. These are developer or research tools, not dependable player fixes.
- Promising a universal sharpness slider. Official DLSS 5 material does not document one general player-accessible control that fixes every game and artifact.
- Changing output resolution during the comparison. Resolution itself affects reconstruction quality, so hold it constant while testing.
- Assuming a driver update guarantees a fix. Keep the driver current, but repeat the controlled test and report the issue if the artifact remains.
Decision guide: which setting should you use?
| Your observation | Next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Artifacts vanish when Neural Rendering is off. | Leave it off or report the affected scene. | The optional neural lighting/material effect is implicated. |
| Image stays soft with Neural Rendering off. | Test Super Resolution quality modes and another upscaler or TAA. | Softness may come from reconstruction or anti-aliasing. |
| Trails appear only during movement. | Capture motion and report possible temporal-integration problems. | Motion vectors or jitter can affect temporal output. |
| Only a few textures are muddy. | Report the location and reproduction steps. | Mip-map or texture-streaming integration may be involved. |
| No DLSS Neural Rendering option exists. | Verify supported hardware, service, game version, and driver. | Availability depends on the title and current support list. |
| One mode is sharper but shimmers more. | Compare it with a steadier mode during the same movement test. | Quality choices can trade detail against temporal stability. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn DLSS 5 off completely?
Yes. NVIDIA’s FAQ states that DLSS 5 is optional. In supported games, turn off the setting labeled DLSS Neural Rendering in Video or Graphics options. Super Resolution may remain enabled because it is a separate control.
Why is the game still blurry after I disable Neural Rendering?
Neural Rendering is not the same as Super Resolution. Check the Super Resolution mode, output resolution, and the game’s alternate upscaler or TAA path. If every mode remains soft, the title may have an implementation or texture-streaming issue.
Should I always use TAA instead of DLSS?
No universal choice is documented. NVIDIA notes that results vary by game and resolution, and that some players prefer TAA in one game while preferring DLSS in another. Compare both in the same scene and during movement.
Is a new graphics card the fix for distorted DLSS 5 visuals?
No supported source establishes a hardware purchase as a cure for these artifacts. Use the documented setting and update checks first. If the defect persists, report it to the game developer.
Best Value
What should I send with a bug report?
Include the game version, GPU or GeForce NOW tier, resolution, driver, active Neural Rendering and Super Resolution settings, symptom type, affected scene, and a still image or moving clip. Say whether disabling Neural Rendering changes the result.
Can I fix mip-map or motion-vector problems in a config file?
Those are developer integration details. Do not edit DLLs, rendering buffers, or other files as a routine player fix. Provide reproducible evidence to the developer instead.
Bottom line
Start with the game’s DLSS Neural Rendering toggle, because NVIDIA confirms DLSS 5 is optional. If disabling it does not restore clarity, troubleshoot DLSS Super Resolution and alternative anti-aliasing separately in the same scene. Persistent ghosting, flicker, or low-detail textures are often signs of game integration problems; document the conditions and send them to the developer instead of modifying files or assuming new hardware will solve the issue.
