How to fix blurry apps and incorrect display scaling after changing Linux desktop environments

Blurry windows or wildly wrong text sizes after moving between Linux desktop environments usually come from a scaling mismatch, not a defective monitor. The display protocol, compositor, desktop settings, toolkit, and application must agree on a scale. First identify whether the session and affected program use Wayland, X11, or XWayland; then reset the desktop scale, test an integer factor, and apply toolkit-specific overrides only where needed. Native Wayland applications generally handle mixed-density monitors better, while fractional scaling can leave legacy X11 applications visibly soft.

Why a desktop-environment switch changes application sharpness and size

Linux display scaling is a negotiated result rather than one universal switch. The monitor reports pixels and density; the display protocol carries surfaces; the compositor decides how those surfaces are placed and transformed; the desktop environment exposes scale controls; a toolkit such as GTK or Qt converts those values into logical pixels; and the application may implement native Wayland scaling, rely on X11, or run through XWayland. A change in any layer can expose a disagreement that was hidden by the previous desktop.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, a desktop setting may be 150 percent while an older X11 program still renders as if the screen were 96 DPI. The compositor then enlarges the finished buffer. The window has the expected physical size, but its text and icons are interpolated and look fuzzy. In another case, an environment variable left in a shell startup file can force a GTK or Qt scale that no longer matches the new desktop’s setting, making only some applications tiny or huge.

The first decision is therefore not “which scale number should I type?” It is “which protocol and toolkit produced the affected window?” That answer determines whether a setting can restore crisp rendering or whether the blur is a limitation of the rendering path.

Step 1: identify the session and the application path

Check whether the login session is Wayland or X11

Open a terminal in the affected session and run:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

The result normally identifies the session as wayland or x11. This is the compositor session, not necessarily the protocol used by every application. A Wayland desktop can still host X11 programs through XWayland, and an X11 desktop cannot provide native Wayland behavior to an application.

Determine how the affected application is rendering

Launch the same program in its normal mode and, when the program offers one, launch it again with its native Wayland backend. Compare the two windows on the same monitor and scale. If the native Wayland window is sharp but the default or X11/XWayland window is blurry, the compositor is probably scaling a buffer that was rendered without the required fractional-DPI awareness. That is the expected failure mode described by GNOME developer Emmanuele Bassi for X11 applications under fractional scaling.

Make this comparison before changing several variables at once. If you alter the desktop scale, environment variables, and application flags together, you cannot tell which layer solved the problem or introduced a new size error. Record the session type, monitor, desktop scale, and whether each test window is native Wayland, X11, or XWayland.

Step 2: reset the desktop’s own display scale

Use the current desktop’s Display settings

Open the desktop environment’s Display settings, select the monitor, and set its scale there. This is the authoritative end-user control for the session. Qt’s guidance is that DPI adjustments should be made through the platform’s native display settings so applications agree on one DPI or scale factor.

After changing the value, log out and back in. At minimum, completely quit and relaunch every affected application; many programs read scale information only during startup. A panel, file manager, or background process that remains running can keep the old value even after a settings panel shows the new one.

Use an integer value while troubleshooting

Begin with 100 percent (1x) or 200 percent (2x). Qt documents integer scale factors such as 1.0 and 2.0 as preferred for the best results. Integer scaling avoids resampling a one-pixel application grid into fractional pixels and makes it easier to distinguish a protocol problem from a simple size preference. Once every toolkit is sharp, you can test a fractional value if your hardware and applications support it.

Quarter-step values can also work well in Qt’s model, but exact physical-DPI values may introduce fractional-scaling artifacts. Treat a fractional setting as a compatibility choice, not as proof that every application can render at that factor. If one legacy program becomes soft at 125 or 150 percent while native applications remain clear, return to the integer value for that workload or move the program to a native Wayland path.

Step 3: account for monitors with different pixel densities

Wayland: per-monitor scaling

GNOME documents per-monitor scaling in a Wayland session. Each display can therefore use a factor appropriate to its density, allowing a high-density laptop panel and a lower-density external monitor to remain readable without forcing one compromise value on both.

X11: one global factor

GNOME’s X11 mode uses a single global scale. With mixed-DPI monitors, one display will often be too large or too small unless you choose a compromise. A native Wayland session is the better baseline for mixed-density setups when the applications you rely on support Wayland. This is a protocol limitation, not something an additional monitor profile or a second desktop slider can fully remove.

When comparing the two sessions, use the same monitor arrangement and the same applications. Compare per-monitor versus global scaling, native toolkit support, whether legacy windows are compositor-scaled, sharpness at fractional factors, and whether a relogin or application restart is required after each change.

Step 4: repair GTK applications without changing everything else

Test one GTK program with an integer scale

GNOME documents GDK_SCALE as a per-application Hi-DPI control. To test a program at 2x, run:

GDK_SCALE=1 application

This test changes only that launch. If the window becomes correctly sized and remains sharp, the desktop-wide value and the application’s GTK interpretation were disagreeing. Keep the override temporary until you confirm that it does not make dialogs, menus, or other monitors unusable.

Apply a GNOME-wide GTK override only in a GNOME XSettings session

For desktop-wide GTK behavior, GNOME documents this XSettings override:

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides "[{'Gdk/WindowScalingFactor', <2>}]"

Use it only when the current session actually runs GNOME’s XSettings service. A different desktop may ignore the key or provide its own settings service, and forcing a GNOME-specific override there can create a second source of truth. After applying it, restart affected applications. If the result is wrong, remove or reset the override from the same settings interface rather than layering another environment variable on top.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize a GTK-only symptom

If Qt applications and the desktop shell look correct but several GTK applications share the same wrong size, focus on the GTK layer: check the per-process GDK_SCALE test, then check the GNOME XSettings override. Do not change Qt variables for a problem that is confined to GTK; doing so can make unrelated programs incorrect.

Step 5: repair Qt and older X11 applications

Understand Qt’s X11 DPI sources

On X11, Qt reads logical DPI from X settings and X resources and falls back to 96 DPI when no more specific value is available. The relevant resource names include Xft/DPI and Xft.dpi; Qt also documents optional physical-DPI handling. A desktop switch can therefore expose an old X resource value even when the new desktop’s display panel appears correct.

Qt’s recommended order is to configure the platform’s native display settings first, then use application or toolkit controls for testing and exceptions. A global override should not be the first response because it can affect every Qt program, including ones that already render correctly.

Set an Xft value for legacy X11 toolkits

For Qt, KDE, Motif, and other older X11 applications, GNOME developer Emmanuele Bassi recommends placing a calculated value such as this in $HOME/.Xresources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Xft.dpi: 141

The number 141 is an example, not a universal recommendation. Calculate the value for the scale you actually want; copying 141 blindly can make text too large or too small. After changing the file, restart the session and the affected applications so they reload X resources. If only one program needs the adjustment, prefer an application-specific method instead of changing the entire X11 session.

Use Qt environment variables as controlled diagnostics

Qt documents these controls:

  • QT_SCALE_FACTOR applies a scale factor and is explicitly useful for testing or debugging.
  • QT_FONT_DPI supplies a font DPI value for applications that honor it.
  • QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS supplies per-screen factors in applications that support the variable.
  • QT_USE_PHYSICAL_DPI selects physical-DPI handling where supported.

Test these variables on a single launch or a narrowly scoped desktop entry first. Avoid leaving QT_SCALE_FACTOR globally enabled unless a particular application requires it and you understand the side effects. A forced factor can override the desktop’s per-monitor decisions, change dialog layouts, and make a correctly configured Qt program appear wrong.

Recognize a Qt-only symptom

If GTK applications are sharp but Qt programs are consistently too large, too small, or use a different font density, inspect Xft resources and Qt-specific variables. A 96-DPI fallback or stale Xft.dpi value is more likely than a monitor fault. Correct the shared X11 DPI source, restart the programs, and only then consider a Qt-specific exception.

Step 6: deal with blur that affects only XWayland applications

Why fractional scaling produces softness

Under fractional scaling, an X11 application may render a buffer at an integer assumption and hand it to XWayland. The Wayland compositor then scales that finished image to the fractional size. Because the compositor is enlarging pixels rather than receiving a surface designed for that scale, text and fine lines can look soft. This is not fixed by changing font smoothing inside the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bassi’s GNOME explanation is unambiguous: “Yes, the blurriness for X11 applications running with fractional scaling is expected, and it cannot really be fixed without porting those applications away from X11.” The practical implication is to change the rendering path or the scale, not to search indefinitely for a hidden sharpening checkbox.

Choose among the three practical remedies

  1. Use the application’s native Wayland backend. Choose this when the program provides one and its features work correctly there. It lets the compositor and toolkit exchange scale information instead of enlarging an X11 buffer.
  2. Use an integer compositor scale. Set the affected monitor to 100 or 200 percent while using the XWayland workload. This may make the overall interface larger or smaller than you prefer, but it avoids fractional resampling.
  3. Use an X11 session for that workload. This can be a reasonable compatibility choice for software that cannot run natively on Wayland. You give up Wayland’s per-monitor scaling advantages in that session and should expect one global factor.

Do not describe the first two options as a permanent fix for the X11 program itself. They are ways to avoid or reduce compositor scaling. A true sharp fractional result requires the application to render with a scaling-aware native path.

Step 7: remove leftovers from the previous desktop carefully

Inspect environment and session files

Desktop changes do not necessarily erase values placed in shell startup files, user-session configuration, or application launchers. Inspect the files and settings that your current session reads for:

  • GDK_SCALE
  • QT_SCALE_FACTOR
  • QT_FONT_DPI
  • QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS
  • QT_USE_PHYSICAL_DPI
  • Xft.dpi in .Xresources
  • GNOME XSettings overrides containing Gdk/WindowScalingFactor

Remove or comment only values you recognize and intentionally set. The list is a diagnostic checklist, not proof that every desktop switch leaves stale settings. A variable may be required for one application, so delete it only after testing the program without it. Start a fresh login session after cleanup; opening a new terminal is not always enough because the desktop session may have inherited the old environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one source of truth

Once the desktop scale is correct, let the native display settings provide the common value. Keep per-application overrides only for programs that demonstrably need them, document why each exists, and avoid setting both a desktop-wide GTK override and a global Qt factor to solve the same symptom. Fewer active layers make future desktop changes predictable.

Wayland and X11: a decision table

Question Wayland session X11 session
Different scale on each monitor? GNOME documents per-monitor scaling. GNOME’s X11 mode uses one global factor.
Native toolkit scaling Applications can receive monitor-aware scale information when they implement native Wayland support. Applications rely on X settings, X resources, toolkit fallbacks, or compositor behavior.
Legacy X11 window under fractional scaling May run through XWayland and be compositor-scaled, causing blur. Runs in its native protocol, but still shares the session’s global scale limitations.
Best first troubleshooting value 100% or 200%, then test native Wayland versus XWayland. 100% or 200%, then inspect Xft and toolkit DPI sources.
After changing a scale Relogin is safest; restart affected applications at minimum. Relogin is safest; restart affected applications and reload X resources.

Symptom-based troubleshooting

Everything became blurry after selecting 125% or 150%

  • Check whether the affected windows are X11 applications running through XWayland.
  • Launch a native Wayland version if available.
  • If only the XWayland copy is soft, use an integer scale, the native backend, or an X11 session for that program.
  • If native Wayland applications are also soft, return to the desktop’s native scale setting and restart the session before investigating toolkit overrides.

Only one GTK application is tiny or huge

  • Launch it with GDK_SCALE=1 application and GDK_SCALE=2 application as controlled tests.
  • Check whether its launcher or shell inherits a different GDK_SCALE.
  • Do not apply a desktop-wide XSettings override until you know multiple GTK programs need the same correction.

Several GTK applications share one wrong size

  • Confirm the session uses GNOME’s XSettings service before using the documented gsettings override.
  • Apply the override, restart the affected programs, and verify that the desktop’s display scale remains the intended value.
  • If another desktop is running, remove the GNOME-specific override and use that desktop’s native display control instead.

Qt programs disagree with GTK programs

  • Check Xft.dpi, Xft/DPI, and Qt environment variables.
  • Remember that Qt may fall back to 96 DPI on X11.
  • Use the platform display setting as the baseline, then test a narrowly scoped Qt variable or an X resource value.
  • Restart the programs after every change so they do not retain the previous DPI.

Two monitors cannot both look right in X11

  • Confirm that the session is actually X11 rather than Wayland.
  • Choose the global factor that makes the primary workload usable, accepting that the other monitor may need a compromise.
  • Move to a native Wayland session when your important applications support it and per-monitor scaling is necessary.

The problem returns after every login

  • Inspect startup files, session environment settings, application launchers, .Xresources, and GNOME XSettings overrides for the variables listed above.
  • Remove only stale values, then log out completely and log back in.
  • Keep a record of any exception that remains so a later desktop switch does not reintroduce the same conflict.

A safe order of operations

  1. Record echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE, the monitor arrangement, and the desktop scale.
  2. Determine whether the affected application is native Wayland, X11, or XWayland by comparing its available backends.
  3. Set the desktop scale to 1x or 2x in the current Display settings.
  4. Log out and back in, then relaunch the affected applications.
  5. For mixed-DPI monitors, prefer native Wayland where supported; expect a global compromise under X11.
  6. For GTK-only errors, test GDK_SCALE on one launch before changing GNOME-wide XSettings.
  7. For Qt or older X11 errors, inspect Xft resources and Qt variables; use an example such as Xft.dpi: 141 only after calculating an appropriate value.
  8. If only XWayland windows remain blurry at fractional scale, switch to a native backend, an integer scale, or an X11 session for that workload.
  9. Clean up stale overrides and start a fresh login session.

This sequence separates protocol limitations from configuration mistakes. It also keeps a working desktop available while you test one layer at a time.
